My husband says that Mustard's has been in existence for as long as he can remember. Not too long ago my dad and I made Monday Hot Dog day. We'd visit different hot dog joints that we read about, wanted to try, time honored places, and, those that came highly recommended. Unfortunately we never got around to Mustard's last stand before he died, but, my husband and I have kept the tradition alive..with a few alterations. It dawned on us this past weekend that we had yet to try Mustard's so we stopped for lunch on Saturday. There wasn't much of a wait which wasn't a surprise since school hasn't started yet, although I suspect it tends to get crowded once the school year starts up. And since it's right next to Ryan Field I imagine it's doubly crowded when NU plays at home. We got a regular hot dog, a slaw dog, a large order of fries, and, based on the recommendation of the nice lady in front of us, a malt. Everything was really good: the hot dog buns were nicely steamed, the regular dog came w/peppers, a pickle, celery salt (score!), tomato, onion, relish, and, mustard. The fries were perfection, just the way I like them: thin and super crispy. The malt was nice and thick and a good suggestion. Why 3 stars? I cannot in good conscience give high marks to a Chicago hot dog place that lists ketchup as a REGULAR condiment on a Chicago hot dog. That right there? That's sacrilege. No self respecting Chicago dawg lover over the age of 12 should be ordering ketchup on their hot dog, and it sure as hell shouldn't be a regular addition. Let's have a hot dog stand right outside of chicago, and on your 'everything' hot dog you put fucking KETCHUP on it, and then you go and spell it CATSUP!! Since he knows I'm not a burger/dog fan he saw that chicken salad was on the menu. We weren't exactly sure if it was the mayo based salad or if it was grilled chicken. I took a chance & ordered a double chicken salad. I don't remember the last time I had such an unenjoyable meal. It was grilled chicken. Dry as cardboard & equally flavorless. In fact, the croutons were the only item in this salad that had any semblance of flavor. I usually don't put any sort of salad dressing on my salads because I like to taste the flavor of the veggies however I found myself slathering this with dressing so I could choke this down. I've eaten as much as I could & the rest will go in the trash I'm sad to say. So....once again I say, THIS IS A HOT DOG STAND. That is all. read more

Again. My review is based on then & now. 1. I like the burgers alot as well as the cheese fries (ROCK solid). The hot dog is also solid eating as well. The dogs are made right and the celery salt is added perfectly (some places use WAY TOO MUCH celery salt). The menu is straight forward and easy to understand. 2. It can get tight at times (mainly because of its size) and there could be a wait (my experiences were not worse than any other local place). 3. As for listing ketchup as a condiment, I let that go in this case. Remember, this place might as well be on Northwestern's campus (since it's so close to the stadium). Most of those kids aren't from here so I can see both sides. I get our Chicago thing (no ketchup- I've never liked ketchup on my dogs, in fact put salsa on a dog if you want but not the "K" word) since most locals assume it as a no-no (after age 10-12). This is my go-to place if I am attending a sporting event at Welsh-Ryan arena & need a quick bite to eat. There are no tables inside & instead there's a ledge along a sports memorabilia-covered wall lined with stools; so don't come here expecting to have a sit-down dinner experience. There are tables outside - but obviously, you're limited as to when that is an option. If you walk in, don't be discouraged when you see the line out the door; these guys can move & you'll get your food ridiculously fast. Despite the chaos in there right before games, the workers there are always friendly. I wish there was a little more space in between the stools and where the line forms to order food, as the space is really tight. However, I usually am not in there for long. I eat. I cross the street, and I'm ready to watch some NU sports. And you didn't hear this from me, but I've frequently seen people order food here & get it to go & sneak it into the stadium. It's a little dive next to Ryan Stadium. Peking is available but tight and tricky; Fairly fast service. I bought a Groupon but I was still asked for an extra $2 for tax which I never have to do with other Groupon but no biggie. I asked to sample the banana ice cream then saw a piece of hair in the vanilla ice cream which immediately turned me off. I brought it to their attention and they scooped it up right away BUT they should have taken the whole carton out. It's not the cleanest place but the people are nice but it does not excuse good and proper sanitation. They could definitely improve on cleaning up the place - they just might get more customers. They are in a prime location so it would behoove them to clean the place up a little. Sadly I won't be returning even thought my two teenage boys said the food was good. read more

They get really busy often, and the inside space is basically a long hallways with bar stools and a tiny bar along the wall with some windows. They have outdoor seating, but if you have to sit inside due to weather, come at an off time (to avoid the lunch rush). If you hate crowds, don't even step foot near here during NU game days. Now the best part: the food. Their hot dogs are legit Chicago style dogs. Their burgers are kind of greasy, but very juicy. Their toppings are fresh and you get tons of them. You also get plenty of fries with your order. Most recently I used a Groupon for two double cheeseburgers, two hot dogs, two medium fries, and two medium drinks for $10. It was very worth it. What makes this place totally unique from all the other hundreds maybe even thousand hot dog places I have been to is that their vegetables (pickle and tomatoes) are cold. All of their employees are working so fast, they quickly serve your orders, and they are so accommodating. They all know how to satisfy all of their customers and give many reasons for the customers to come back again. Very personable employees. I got a text that the food was "on its way" and would be there by 12:01. The driver called at 12:40. When I told him how late it was and that we would not be able to eat the food he said, "O" - could care less. I order on Grubhub so I tipped while packing the order - $80 order with $20 tip.
