A place to spoil…read more your creatures Islandog is a small store that has gone to the dogs. Literally. However it's not just dogs but also kitties and even humans. A store for anyone who shares their home with a non human creature or perhaps knows someone else who does. Islandog probably could be called a pet boutique if it was in another location but on Block Island Islandog is a cool name. It's only a short walk from the ferry dock and has nice views of the ocean out on the deck. The store has all kinds of foolish, ridiculous, curious and humorous things that are centered on a dog or cat theme. Lots of t-shirts with your particular type of cur, also hats, bowls, cups, aprons, flags, door mats and just about anything else you can think of, all with a picture of a dog or cat plastered on it. Not all of the merchandise is foolish, they also have some practical items and edible treats. Cat people won't feel totally out of place here, they have some very humorous shirts and other items that reflect the amusing side of sharing life with a feline. Definitely an entertaining and fun store to spend some time in, especially if your beast expects a souvenir from ol' two legs.

I dropped off my senior dog, who's nearly 12 and has severe anxiety, for a scheduled grooming. An hour later, I got a call saying they couldn't groom him because he didn't have his updated rabies documentation.... which is completely understandable. What's not acceptable is that they let him sit in a cage for an hour before contacting me, fully knowing they wouldn't be grooming him. If the paperwork was missing, why not send him home when he was being dropped off. When I asked, calmly, why he had to sit there for an hour unnecessarily, the staff member on the phone was rude and condescending. No real answer -- just attitude. I had someone pick him up immediately. Meanwhile, they went ahead with grooming my younger dog. I had given very clear, written instructions: bath, haircut, and anything else she needed. When I picked her up, it was obvious she had only been bathed : not groomed. I asked why nothing had been trimmed on her back or ears or butt, and they told me, "We only did her feet and belly because some clients get upset when we do too much." Seriously? If I wanted a foot and belly trim, I would've written that. I wrote "haircut." This is the second time I've paid for a haircut and received a glorified bath. But even that wasn't the most upsetting part. I've been coming to this location for three years -- and I didn't recognize a single staff member that day. It looked like a team of overwhelmed, disinterested kids who didn't want to be there. One girl was elbowing a dog on the grooming table to hold it down while another shouted at it to stop moving -- clearly frustrated and rough. They didn't even realize I was standing there, watching. To top it off, my senior dog was just in two weeks ago for a nail trim -- no one asked for rabies documentation then. So what changed? Honestly, it felt like they just didn't want to bother with a larger, older dog who requires more time and patience. Then the icing on the cake: later that day, my boyfriend got an email saying we were unprofessional -- and that they'd no longer be accepting our elderly dog. Not both dogs. Just the one that requires more effort. That told me everything I needed to know. This place used to be professional, trustworthy, and kind. Not anymore. What I witnessed was chaotic, careless, and borderline abusive. I'm heartbroken and disgusted. I will never be bringing my dogs here again -- and I wouldn't recommend anyone else trust them with theirs either.

I walked in looking for a specific wet cat food that I needed to get for a neighbor, but the did not have it. Still, the store has a large selection of pet food for dogs and cats. It's smaller than a PetSmart, so the selection is a bit limited, but they do offer the most common brands and items.

They were helpful and efficient over the phone and made a special order from their supplier for what I would need so that it would be ready when I arrived, not requiring me to pay in advance. Throughout the summer I have visited several more times to stock up on hay for my piggies as well as some fun new toys and treats for them. Not all pet stores cater to small pets and I have been pleased with their reliable stock of what I need most (lots of quality hay, at the same price as the big chain stores) along with some fun extras. My young kids have been with me on most visits and have been treated kindly in the store, and the staff has always been helpful, organized and efficient. I will definitely continue to return to stock up for our piggies whenever we are on the east end!
