I'm in the city part-time and had a lunch scheduled nearby. I knew I needed to get my hair toned but I wanted to find something in the area. After a quick Google search, I came upon Studio 34. Scheduling: Super easy. They were so attentive and kind on the phone. It already made me feel confident about coming here Wash/Shampoo: I did not get the name of the kind woman who washed my hair (I came in yesterday, Thursday around 2 pm). But she was wonderful! Wash was perfect, I was so comfortable and my hair is the softest it's ever been and I can't stop smelling it. And I've been to dozens of salons. WHAT DID SHE DO!? HAHAH! Shout out to her excellent care and attentiveness. Toning: Eric was my hair stylist and did a WONDERFUL job. Was thorough on explaining what he was doing with my hair (I've had toning done before but I still appreciated him going through the process), made me feel comfortable and was very kind/friendly! This was an absolutely traumatizing experience. I went to the Murray Hill location to get my roots done and tone my hair, which was a mix of strawberry blonde and old highlights. I showed the stylist a reference photo and explained that I wanted a copper tone, not too dark, just something to even everything out. When she finished, my hair was nearly black. I was shocked. I immediately said this wasn't what I asked for, and instead of acknowledging the mistake or offering a helpful solution, the stylist insisted that I had asked her to match my roots. I hadn't. She got defensive, combative, and started yelling at me. The receptionist stepped in and was more empathetic. She agreed something had gone wrong and offered to send me to their uptown location to fix it. I asked very clearly if I would be charged, and she said no. I even asked again before leaving, and she repeated that I wouldn't be charged by either location. I paid out of pocket to Uber uptown. The stylist there, Gary, did fix the color, but made sure I knew how busy he was and treated me like I was lucky he was making time. He gave me a condescending lecture about showing reference photos, and when I told him I had, and that I had been very clear, he brushed it off. I've been getting my hair done for years. I understand the process. I know how to communicate what I want, and I always come prepared with photos. That wasn't the issue. At one point, when another client joked that her scalp was burning, I tried to lighten the mood by laughing. He turned to me and said, "You're laughing now, you're going to have it a lot worse." He was right. My scalp started burning so badly I cried. It was a long and emotionally draining process. The color looked better by the end, but I now have a scab on my scalp, most likely from the chemical treatment. And then, despite being told repeatedly that I wouldn't be charged, Gary tried to make me pay more than the original salon visit would have cost. When I told him that the receptionist at the first location had specifically told me it would be free of charge, he said, "She made a huge mistake if she told you that." He then went on to argue with me, saying even his family pays, and made me feel like I was being difficult for not wanting to pay after everything I had been put through. After going back and forth, he agreed to charge me $150, which I paid, even though it felt completely unfair. I called the receptionist at the first salon afterward to tell her I had been charged. She denied ever saying I wouldn't be, which felt like the final blow. After all of that, I felt completely gaslit and taken advantage of. I left with a damaged scalp, out time and money, and genuinely shaken. I've never written a review like this before, but I think people deserve to know what kind of experience I had. It was time for a change, best advertisement is someone else's hairstyle. Noticed a women's hair cut that I was looking for, my stylist just didn't get it right, ok but needed bounce, movement. I walked in one day and spoke with a stylist, my concern was price as well as Manhattan can get pricy. Artiz seemed a bit young and I thought she wasn't going to get it right. Was I wrong !! With as much confidence and experience cutting as anyone she listened and I can be a bit difficult when it comes to my hair. I don't often know what I want but know what I don't want. I gave it all to her and said go girl, and she did. A pretty shade of golden brown the cut I wanted with movement also was feathered so it fell nicely with no ends sticking up. Young can be good they introduce you to change but subtle, my hair is easier to manage and falls nicely. I am glad I took the chance with no hard sell not much talk she knew what I wanted and with scissors and a brush took me there. I recommend the stylist and the establishment. I am usually such a huge ball of anxiety when it comes to salons. I am used to my cousin doing my hair from home, but she is states away and it just isn't an option right now. Typically when I go to a new stylist I end up leaving the salon not feeling my best. This time was different! I had an AMAZING experience. From the very start to finish. I was a walk in, but they took me anyway for a cut, highlights, and a blow out! Natasha was my stylist and she was extremely helpful. She was informative when it came to recommendations for my very curly, dry, and fading hair! She made sure I understood why she recommended what we should do next. All I knew was I wanted to update my orangey balayage and add in highlights. She described what she was doing and why and made sure that was okay with me. I have had experiences in other salons that left me in tears so I appreciate her open communication with me more than I could ever begin to explain. Natasha fixed the off color in my balayage and added in highlights that accentuate my face and eyes! The golden color she guided me to is absolutely perfect. She trimmed my hair exactly right. She didn't take too much off which is extremely important for me because I have naturally curly. Jennifer, who shampooed my hair, was kind, efficient, and gave a great scalp massage! She checked in on me and was also really helpful! I can tell the communication between those who work in the salon is so good. They interact with one another and their clients in an efficient and caring way. This makes the environment of the salon all the better. I am all about good energy and that's what I felt at Studio 34. Natasha finished off my look with a gorgeous blowout that has kept beautifully. I am so excited and overjoyed. I've lived in NYC for a little over two weeks and I know I've found my go to salon and stylist. I haven't ever had a go to salon because I haven't ever had an experience like this. I feel incredible and confident. My hair looks so great and I can't wait to come back. My husband has seen how happy I am and asked me to book him an appointment for his next cut! And to top it all off, the pricing of the services had me do a double take. I have been here a couple of time over the years. I always loved how sweet and lovely every worker in this salon was. I always felt beautiful after having my hair cut or blown here. I used to live in NY but have recently moved to NJ. I took an expensive uber all the way to manhattan to specifically come to what was my favorite salon, the only one i felt i could trust. I called the front desk in advance to book the appointment and ask if what i wanted was possible. I told her i had a lot of extensions in my hair and that my hair was black and i wanted it dyed lighter. If someone on the phone had told me this would not be possible i would be fine with the honesty but i was told that it was possible. I was skeptical so i asked what that would entail? I was told it should be a single process and that it was definitely possible. So when i came here, on my one day off (i work 6 days a week), in my expensive uber i was so sad to have the colorist tell me in person that it was not in fact doable. I was upset but i understood. I thought, well while im here i might as well get a hair cut. I asked if the stylist would be able to cut long layers for me to which he said "yes". After blowing out my hair and cutting a little snip off of my bangs, the stylist asked me if my bangs were at a good length. Then he looked at me like "why are you still sitting there?". So i asked "i thought you were going to give me layers". And he responded, No i cant do that i dont know how to cut extensions. What? Then why didnt you tell me that in the first place ? I wouldnt have got my bangs cut, even though ut was just a snip, if i knew the rest of my hair was not going to cut. I feel like i look like an idiot now. Im just so shocked about the lack of honest and the lies. Im also just so upset because i do have my wedding soon and i was hoping to feel beautiful for my wedding day. I left Studio 34 feeling more insecure about my hair than i did when i came in. I was also charged $75 for literally a blowout and what was a centimeter cut off my bangs- thats crazy and so not fair. I feel taken advantage of. I very rarely write any negative reviews and i only like to promote businesses that i love but i feel cheated by Studio 34 and somewhat betrayed. On top of all of this the owner or manager who was walking around felt like he was giving me dirty looks which was odd. Im never ever anything but nice and understanding when i step into someone else's business. I am a business owner myself and i know how unreasonable and crazy some customers can be but once in a while a negative review is justified. I hope the owners can see this and fix this issue. You should never mislead people or lie to them. The receptionist was the only nice one there and i liked her a lot! But she should be informed to consult the stylist first before making promises that cant be kept. I do not think this is at all her fault- she is not a stylist. She needs to be taught by the owners or managers about what to say. Also, the stylists should never lie about what they can and cant do. I was told i would be able to get simple hair cut and i left with an expensive blowout. I myself am quite good with a blowdryer and i know how to give myself a basic trim so if i knew i would come out of there paying $75 for a blowout and a centimeter of my bangs cut i would just not go. I hope this salon can get back to what it once was or that this was a one off situation and that they dont do this to other people again. I had a consult with Ben at the E. 56th St. location about two months ago and was impressed by his critique of my recent haircut and his recommendations for a future cut. He told me to return in about six to eight weeks. This past Sunday, I went to Ben for a haircut and we talked very briefly. I returned to his chair after the shampoo and he was not the patient, charming and courteous person I met previously. I asked him to blunt cut or square cut the sides of my hair and he was angry. After he finished cutting the bottom of the hair, I placed my hands at the sides of my head and asked how he was going to layer the hair in that area. Ben's response was that I was interrupting his haircut and he did not feel he could continue with me. I said to him, because I want to know how you're going to layer my hair? His comment was that we had discussed that earlier. He removed the cape and told me to go someone else to finish the haircut. I called the salon to make an appointment a few days ago and came here this afternoon. The space--SO pretty and unique, a huge chandelier is hung in the middle of the salon and there are bright crystal lights everywhere. I had a 4pm appointment for my teenage daughter on Sunday May 21st. I called the Salon and told them I was running late because there was a lot of traffic on 1st ave because of a crane issue. The receptionist said it's ok if I am even 10 mins late. I reach 15 mins late and the manager spoke to me so rudely and wouldn't let me explain what happened. I walked into Studio 34 with the intention of having my hair dyed. When I checked in at the desk, I was immediately met with smiles and happy faces, Siba is the sweetest! My stylist was Ranne, an extremely polite and talented artist who handled my hair with the utmost care. He listened to all my hair demands and made sure he knew exactly what I wanted. I knew my hair would be in great hands. He was very precise and took his time on my hair to make sure it was perfect. I was super comfortable the whole time. He was attentive and really took the time to make sure it was the correct tones. I've had jet black hair for a while and did not want to go too light too quickly and he worked wonders for my hair color. In a matter of only 2 hours, my hair was transformed into a beautiful warm toned, honey balayage. I loved that he did not rush and truly cared to make me look good. Moreover, he did an amazing blowout especially since my hair is thick and frizzy. He even curled the bottom! I can't express how obsessed I am with studio 34. My experience here was wonderful! BEN has been my go-to for blowouts, treatments, and color. He is the BEST!!!! I have very dark brown hair, and he maintains my golden locks to perfection, and I always get complimented on my color. We have become friends over the years, and he treats me like a celebrity. I could not recommend him more. There have also been times where I've gotten blow outs by Gabby and Sam if Ben is out, and they are phenomenal too. I've had a positive experience every time I go to Studio 34. I went for a haircut and blowout with Atriz, and she did a wonderful job. My hair is curly and frizzy, so when I get it blown out most people don't take the time to ensure it's fully dry. She took the time to make sure it was perfect, especially given the humidity with this heat in July. She also recommended products that would work well and help if I wanted to leave it curly.
