I want to give this place more stars but I just can't. I've been here over a handful of times because everyone raves about it. The brisket is dry and other meats are so so. I like to get the pulled pork sandwich with the mustard BBQ sauce and a side of fried okra and haven't been disappointed yet. From the outside it's easy to miss. It's a small little joint and doesn't scream "come eat here". Despite what Yelp says, though, it is open on Mondays. When you walk in, there are 4 tables that have some old plastic table coverings and a random assortment of chairs. Kind of inviting until you eat their "food". As for my first impression of the service, the lady at the counter was extremely friendly and helpful with menu questions. The prices are exhorbanent especially for what they offer. I'm not sure what happened in Carlsbad for people to accept this dried out and wanting meat as BBQ but it is New Mexico so I'm sure I shouldn't be so surprised. I would avoid this place. Ribs were terrible. Brisket was worse (and tasted like it had been smoked with fence pickets). Pulled pork couldn't save them at the end. The baked beans were definitely Bushes or some off brand from a can. Overall the service is all they have to offer. I'd say "save yourself some time and money" but you'd be best off making the trip over the state line to TX where you can eat a decent meal. read more

Great tasting Southern-style bar-b-que. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork. Homemade BBQ sauce.

First, the good. The food is very, very excellent. We tried the pork ribs, beef brisket, polish sausage and hot links, with onion rings on the side. All were fantastic. The meat was very tender, and their sauce was amazingly good. Now, the bad. We ordered takeout online, and the site said food would be ready in about 30 minutes. I showed up then, but our food was not ready for another 45 minutes afterward. An hour and 15 minutes to get our food! There were about 5 others who were waiting just as long. There were two tables of dine-in as well, and people at one of them were asking each other when they'd get to eat. I realize that this is a small operation, and that Carlsbad doesn't have a lot of dining options. Getting an order out every 10 minutes doesn't seem sustainable though. I really hope they figure things out and this place survives, as their food is pretty great. read more

The Pulled Pork Sandwiches here were really great! Probably my second favorite bbq in town. I think they would really benefit from offering a sweet bbq and a spicy bbq sauce if they were able to make those options available I think would attract a broader crowd. The food was perfectly cooked, but I am a fan of a little spice kick, but I also am a fan of a restaurant who cooks things fairly mild so that customers can make the choice themselves to avoid displeasing those who aren't accustom to spicy foods But if there were a spicy bbq sauce then I would definitely eat here more often! Awesome food! The sandwiches were filled with meat! It came out pretty fast too! The macaroni salad was ok and the coleslaw was good. The only thing is they gave me a half full container of the coleslaw when I paid 2.75 for it. But they were nice enough to actually fill it up when I asked. Tips: wash your hands before coming in if you intend to eat in because they don't have a washroom yet. They don't have free cups of water either which was kinda weird. read more

Their bathroom is accessed from outside, a little confusing to find, but it's definitely there! Don't be deceived that it's tiny and has a small parking lot. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I've had my share of bbq in my time and I know ribs are gonna have some fat on them. But seriously, these were basically fat and bone. No meat here. Some of the brisket was burned beyond being eatable, and the rest was just dry and tasteless. I had to drown everything in sauce just to eat it. This southern girl was so happy to find real southern BBQ. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the homemade sauce was so good, we took 2 bottles to go back to MS. NOW, the sides- the man knows how to salt a fry. They were just out of the fryer crisp and plenty of salt. Perfect. The fried okra was southern. I only ate half and enjoyed my Lays chips more than the brisket sandwich. The BBQ containers were clogged and had BBQ sauce all over them and after asking for them to be unclogged, they didn't clean them off. Very disgusting and unappetizing. Lack of cleanliness of the containers made me wonder what would be found in the kitchen, if that's what customers see. Very young staff, not professional. I do not recommend this place and would not go here again. The only redeeming thing was a very young girl who greeted everyone as they walked through the doors. I seek out BBQ joints when I travel and ask for local's recommendations. My Daddy's BBQ came highly recommended and Yelp's 4 1/2 star rating sealed the deal. It is advertised as South Carolina style BBQ so I was excited to eat this style again. I have to say, disappointed is putting it mildly! I ordered the 3 meat combo, pulled pork, shredded brisket, and ribs. My plate consisted of a generous portion of large ribs (4) and the flap of meat usually trimmed off. I had to ask for my two other meats, they forgot to serve it. Again very generous servings of both pulled pork and brisket. One really big disappointment was the smoking wood. When asked, I was told it was a mixture of Mesquite, Hickory, and some Oak. Traditional South Carolina BBQ uses Hickory and sometimes Oak. Mesquite is a western wood. There was so much mesquite it made the meat acrid and bitter. In addition, the ribs were cold and dried out. The only positive thing was the BBQ sauce. Tangy and thin with great flavor, but not enough to overcome the mesquite. I cannot recommend My Daddy's BBQ! read more
