My Eye Dr has served my wife and daughter for several years, but I have used a different eye doctor. Because its store was convenient, however, I stopped by to have some frames repaired. The frames had been broken in several places and took some time to repair, but they were back to new condition. When I sought to pay for the , I was told there was no charge. What a wonderful shock! Your website says you accept all insurance. Just to be on the safe side, I called and asked if they accepted my insurance and they confirmed that they did. "Yes! We accept all insurance!" For my convenience since I had another appointment in Evanston that day, I visited the office to pick out new frames. I was greeted and was told that someone would be with me. There were several stations where some customers were being helped and some employees had no customers. I walked around the lobby to start looking at frames. Sat down for a few minutes and got back up and continued to shop the frames in the store until finally one employee that was sitting there with no customers asked if I needed help. REALLY?! I explained why I was there and she asked if I had insurance and I told her yes. She asked what kind. I told her. Then proceeds to tell me that they DO NOT accept my insurance there. I told explained that I was told by one of her colleagues that they did. She told me maybe I should go downtown. So...poor customer service, bad employee training, uninformed employees. All just bad and a total waste of my time. DO BETTER! read more

I love this store. It's not cheap, but the quality of service is excellent. I also go there to get eye exams-- the doctors are also excellent and teach me about eye care. The store stands by its warranties. Recently, I bent the frame of a pair of my glasses. They fixed them immediately-- is less than one day! They did it in the store, so I didn't even have to use the warranty and could use it later if something happens to the glasses. Everyone there is also really skilled at helping pick out frames that look good on different face shapes. I also enjoy that the store is dog friendly. read more

This store is in a great location. It's right on the corner so you can't miss it. The store is clean and organize. Glasses are everywhere so a shopper has a great option if they need glasses. I was well please with my first visit. I shall return. The staff was very pleasant. The secretary greeted me and it was straight to business. She made the process easy and direct. She walked me through my process and answered my questions. She made me feel like a real customer and not a number. I didn't catch her name though. I'll get it next time. Update (May 1, 2024): After seeing my original review Larry called and asked me to return to the store to correct his mistakes. When I got there Larry offered me a sincere apology and gave me a refund of $400. In addition he fixed my wife's glasses for free and told me that if I came back he would offer both my wife and I a 50% discount on our next purchase. I should also add that my issues were with the pricing of the glasses and the glasses themselves are great. I am changing my rating from one star to three. People make mistakes. Updated review because the manager Larry provided top-notch customer service in response to this situation. He reached out to both me and my husband on his day off to talk with us. (Even provided his cell number.) He also indicated that he would provide more training to the staff. I was in a situation where my eye care was truly my health care. So Spex runs a scam. You came in because your insurance will pay for the eye exam so they hand you a piece of paper and say read.....you sort of start to read and ask if you need to sign it. They say you do not need to sign so you give up. Then some lady grabs you into a dark room for a "pre exam" . Only after the eye exam is completed you find out that you are required to pay extra 50 bucks for that pre exam on which your insurance will not pay. read more

I have to say that everyone at this location was polite, helpful, and conciderate of my time. I found Peggy to be very upbeat, helpful and very much about customer service. There was also a gentleman who assited me in picking out my glasses who was very Helpful and gave excellent customer service. I found there prices to not be the lowest but still a great value for the selection of upscale designers they carry. I would be very suspect about the negative reviews of this location. I found the customer service to be top notch and everyone from the receptionist to the optometrist to be as polite and helpful as they come. Bumping up my review to 3.5 stars. After posting the initial review about my eye exam, I got a call from the manager of this store, which I ignored because that's what I do (sorry). Then I got a handwritten letter, sent to my house, with an apology and a hefty gift certificate! I no longer live or work in the Evanston area, so I won't be back at Spex anytime soon--but I hope they take my advice to heart, and I'm glad they're working on their customer service; the manager went above and beyond in this instance. read more

So I have know Durelle for 3-4 years now. I always call and find out where he is, even though there are closer places for eye visits. This time I chose to travel about 45 mins on the train when I pass about three other locations . He really gave me his honest opinion on the frames I was picking out. I am extremely happy with the way the manager, Larry resolved the issue I had with my glasses. He had reordered the frames I had originally picked out and had them put in with regular lenses without the anti glare coating. Finally those irritating reflections I was seeing in the corners of my field of view are gone and plus I never liked how fragile anti glare coating is.(The coatings themselves tend to be very prone to smudging, scratches etc. Yes, they may have some benefits like reducing glare from lights while driving, but I do not personally recommend using anti glare.) I wholeheartedly regret that I wrongfully perceived Larry to be skeptical of the issues I was having with my glasses. Larry genuinely cares about customer satisfaction and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure everything works out. He even refunded me the price of the glasses and offered to see if he can fix the other pair I have that unfortunately got bent out of shape while they were adjusted. I am very happy and thankful for the great customer service Larry provided. I will definitely use myeyedr again and I do very much recommend them. You can be confident that if you use myeyedr and should any issues arise that they will gladly fix it for you. read more

Horrid customer service. Ordered prescription daytime and sunglasses. Call next day - Frames for sunglasses day would not fit prescription. Instructions provided. Called 3 weeks later and given delivery date. Called after delivery date, frames never received at store. Had to escalate manager refusal to issue credit card refund rather than company check with 2-4 week delay while holding my funds. Told to do so "on website" when I asked for escalation contact. For a variety of reasons, I switched to another optometrist, but I have been completely unsuccessful in getting MyEyeDoctor to stop calling, texting, and emailing me for appointments. I have called the store several times and they have assured me that they removed my phone number from their records, but I still receive Robo calls from them. read more

I went here because they were list by my insurance (VSP). If you are going there for the same reason make sure you tell them that you only want to use the amount allotted by your insurance company. I ended up paying almost double what my insurance was billed. You've been warned... Don't make the same mistake as me, ask what the fees are before making an appointment. I try to avoid going to optometrists for my annual eye exam because in my experience (I've had glasses for 23 years!), they don't know what they are doing. The lovely Northwestern University student insurance does not cover routine eye exams by ophthalmologists, so I reluctantly went to an optometrist last year for my vision prescriptions (wish they didn't expire after a year!). My experience at this Spex on Central only reaffirmed my previous dislike. The Good: I chose Spex because it seemed like a hip place with a good selection of cool frames, so maybe the eye exam would also be a step up from my previous experieces at eyeglasses stores. The interior is nice, with a modern lime green and brown color scheme and the selection of frames is great. They have a lot of cool brands with great design elements, like La Font, Lindberg, and Oliver Peoples. The optometrist, Sanela Puskar, was pretty friendly, but she was the only one. The Bad: First of all, they took every opportunity to sell sell sell. I came only for a contact lens prescription. I told Dr Puskar that I was happy with my Acuvue Oasys lenses and was not interested in trying the Optix lenses they were peddling at Spex (there was a pitch about its unique extra oxygen-permeability). Furthermore, it was unclear when my exam was really over, so I ended up having to ask the staff for my contacts prescription. I was told that they knew my prescription. When I said I needed to know it too (!!), they gave me a prescription but wrote "copy" in the signature field. Huh?! They overall made it very difficult for me to be able to get contacts or glasses elsewhere. After putting in the drops to dilate my pupils, Dr Puskar told me to go see a woman outside the exam room (while another patient came in for their exam!). It turned out to be a sales woman who proceeded to have me try on different frames all over the store for about 20 mins. I am fairly blind, which Dr Puskar was well aware of, having just done my eye exam--I could not see what I looked like with the glasses on!! Besides that, why were they having me go into the brightness when my eyes are being dilated? I've never been made to leave an exam room while my pupils are dilating! I followed along for a bit b/c I was really confused. Was my appointment over?? I asked why were they making me try on glasses, and they said it was because I had to wait anyways so it gave me something to do. I told them that was pointless if I can't see anything, so then they sat me down to have me pay my bill; as I recall it was around $300! I did not understand how or why it was that expensive, and I felt cornered b/c I couldn't see and couldn't ask the doctor about it, since she was in with another patient. Somewhere in the midst of all this, I started to feel really dizzy. I have never in my life had this happen from getting my eyes dilated. When she came out, Dr Puskar was pretty nice and offered me water, and told me to lie on the floor in the back if I thought I was going to faint, so I wouldn't get hurt (wow). I just sat in Spex for about an hour and a half waiting to feel somewhat normal so I could drive home. If only I'd gone to the Dempster St location, then I could have walked home... but they aren't open on Wednesdays. (weird??) I spoke to my mom while waiting, who told me that she's gotten additional drops before that reverse the dilation. The doctor was in with another patient, so I asked the sales lady who'd been helping me about whether it's possible for me to get "un-dilated", but she was rude and very dismissive. I think she was helping another customer, but she knew full well that I was unable to leave the store because I was feeling so sick. When she finally let me speak to her, she said she didn't know and I'd have to wait for the eye doctor to come back out (she was with another patient as well). How very unhelpful. I was asking her to interrupt the exam; if I were that patient, I wouldn't have minded having that happen for someone who is sick b/c of the exam. It turns out that they don't have the undilating drops. They use a different kind of drops that my former eye doctor was surprised to hear anyone was still using. In the end I left though I was still feeling lightheaded. On the way out I FINALLY got to talk to the manager, who made the sales lady apologize to me, and got me a real prescription I could take elsewhere. I had to tell her, however, that there was no way I could choose let alone buy glasses from them, right then, because I was about to pass out. Why is it so hard just to get that piece of paper?? They did interrupt the optometrist this time, so she could sign the Rx and I could be on my merry way. I ended buying a pair of glasses I'd tried on at Spex, but from a different optical shop. I love these glasses, thanks to Spex for introducing them to me!! read more

Honestly, this place is pretty shady. They will add on unnecessary services for a fee without asking you (they have some sort of specialized exam that is totally unnecessary for people who see an opthamologist separately and just need a glasses/lens prescription from an optometrist). Also, I went in for a contact lens fitting and afterward they tried to sell me contact lenses that were more expensive than what I could get elsewhere. When I said that I wouldn't be buying lenses from them, they said the fee for the contact lens fitting would increase as a result. Getting them to print my prescription/refraction for me so that I could take it with me was like pulling teeth. read more

This is the second time they would not allow me to order online and not through them. I received a call from a very polite person from Spex today informing me that they would not allow me to order new contacts. They did offer to give me a pair of loaners until I could come in. I wish I would have read the reviews before going to Spex. They are a retail operation looking to gauge you on price whenever possible. Peggy, the store manager, is rude and condescending. I will never go back to this place and I had taken my whole family here for eye exams. My mistake for not asking about their hidden fees prior to making the appointment. They charge you for pictures which you probably don't need and the worst is the contact lens fitting fee. I agree with Allen. Don't make the mistake that we made. Don't give Spex your business. The staff is uniformly professional and friendly, including the manager whom two earlier reviewers found wanting. My most recent interaction there was to solve a lens issue on my two year old glasses; the solution was prompt and more than satisfactory. I've been getting my glasses here for over 10 years--as has my wife and kids, my sisters and dad--and I swear by Peggy and her taste level. For us it's been nothing but great experiences with her. She takes her time, she gives you an honest opinion, and she's excellent at finding you the right frames. And I see other people waiting for her as well. It may be that people are turned off by the prices, which can be high. But I don't put a price on quality service, and I'm fine with shelling out the dough for a more expensive pair of glasses that I wind up wearing for years. read more

I have been going to SPEX for a decade. They have the coolest frames anywhere in Chicagoland. I receive compliments on every frame I buy from them. And, Peggy is the world's best optician. I would never purchase my glasses from anyone else. Today, I was lucky enough to meet the sales rep from the Seraphin and OGI brands - also very nice and knowledgeable. If you have to wear glasses, this is the only place to shop!! P.S.-- Tyler helped me out today (2/21). He is super cool and has excellent taste in frames. I have been going to this location dating back to when it was Spex and Gina Piper was the OD. Since being purchased, the caliber of caregivers has decreased (and as a result I have experienced problems with my prescription) and the customer service has been very poor. Today, I went for the last time, to pick up my records since I plan to go to another eye care facility. Despite having called in advance, the records weren't ready, so I was asked to wait. I found out while waiting and requesting all records including Spex, that the Spex records have been purged. In other words, thrown out. My and my family's Spex records are no longer available, and I hadn't even been given the opportunity to collect them. I have never heard of such a thing. Definitely avoid this place. read more

Large selection of frames, & very good customer service. Unlike the location on Dempster, this one doesn't have all of their frames locked up in the cases (which can be a problem if opticians are too busy to unlock them!). It seemed more user-friendly, had a wider variety, & there was plenty of staff available to help with selection, & make recommendations. We arrived later in the day, but never felt rushed, or obligated to make a choice. Optician recorded our favorites in the computer for future reference...very helpful! read more

I have been going to Spex for the several years. I go once a year for a check-up, contact lens, and once in a while a new pair of glasses. In previous years the staff, not including the doctor, were not so friendly. THIS YEAR the employees are quality people. Additionally, the new equipment the doctor uses for exams really speeds up the process. I was in and out with contacts ordered in less than 45 minutes. WOW! Also when ordering a year's supply of contact lens Spex provides several bottles of eye solution free of charge. It's not a big deal but it made my visit that more pleasant. A 60-something with short gray hair, I walked into Spex in January with a new prescription knowing exactly what frame I wanted, which happens to look rather like what many in my demographic wear--and wear well. But Tyler Ramey was the optician who helped me. He's young and extremely stylish himself. He's also patient and kind. He showed me what I wanted. And then he offered some options, as he saw my eyes scan the rows of beautiful frames in wonderful colors and shapes. He was enthusiastic. And direct: "You can do better" was the rejoinder when I tried something on that he judged wasn't flattering. About an hour and 30 frames after I had arrived, I was being measured for really spectacular frames that manage to be subtle even though they are purple and a rather sharp green. I decided these would be for "everyday" and think about my original selection. When I did come back several days later, my eyes were caught by a cabinet of frames I hadn't seen before that included some variations of on these. Wow! One frame really gave me zip--and it is totally clear. Again, Tyler did the vetting. He also respected my price point and ran a study of my insurance benefit, so I knew my cost before I made the purchase. Both frames were ready when promised. Both fit well. And, interestingly, some close friends, didn't even notice tho I'd made a switch from light tortoise shell!. I think that's because they look so natural. Those who did notice really focused in and said how terrific I looked. It's been two months now that I've worn the new frames and every day I'm so glad for Tyler's eye. read more
