I have eyeglasses, not from this business. But, I recently sat on my glasses, and a lense popped out. I finally figured out how the lense could be put back into the rim of eyeglasses, but not by me. My vision is not good enough to unscrew that tiny temple hinge. Went to Big City Optical in Evanston. The man working there cheerfully and generously screwed out the hinge, inserted my lense, and even adjusted both temples (which were out of whack because... I sat on them) . I asked what I what I owed them, but was told this repair just something they can do. Really, I have to say, they won my business the next time I need to change my prescription. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews for a place and I don't want to make this entirely negative, either. Everyone was friendly here and I never got the impression that the doctor was anything other than professional and knowledgeable. However, it turns out that my pupillary distance was measured incorrectly, so when I ordered my glasses, the prescription was way off. So this is just to say - check your pupillary distance against previous prescriptions and make sure it's right! read more

My family of four has gone here for a few years. Unfortunately, this year the service has taken a steep downward decline. Customer service is the differentiator and with so many other options, their lack of professionalism and follow-up means we're taking our business elsewhere. From getting our names wrong, to not following up with their commitment to order sample contacts for me to try on (a rip off since they CHARGE for fitting)...highly recommend you try another location or chain all together. read more

She took minimal time with me, wasn't a full exam, gave no summary of her findings, my eye health, or a treatment plan. Hmm, maybe I am used to going to my own optometrist or opthamologist, but I found this sort of like going to a Verizon store. After my full exam in the back, I was sent to the front to someone who was going to help me with frames. All he wanted to do was sell me the latest, greates, how much do I want to spend, etc. and I sincerely doubt he had any clue how to fit a frame to a face, etc. As if that's not all, I requested a copy of my records the following day and the record states that my purpose for coming in was due to blurry vision (not true) and that it was blurry without my glasses (gee, I have been wearing glasses since I was 7 - ya think??) I told them I came in just to get my eyes tested and perhaps a current prescription for lenses, since it had been a few years. Did not seem very professional to me. Even the optometrist not very experienced. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, they are unfailingly professional, competent, and convenient. Very easy to schedule an appointment and get other things done. On the other hand, they're hideously expensive. I was charged over $350 for a pair of lenses that I found out later could be purchased for less than $100 on Zenni. And that was AFTER insurance, and not including the frame. Go here for your exam and eyecare, but get your glasses and contacts somewhere else. read more

I had an OUTSTANDING experience at Big City Optical. To be honest, I assumed I probably wouldn't get the 'best' treatment as I was bringing in my own frames that just needed lenses, and I didn't want to spend a fortune. However, Chuck was so warm and friendly and gave me quite literally one of the best experiences I've ever had at an opticians establishment! Not only did he measure my eyes quickly and proficiently, he also called my insurance for me and ensured that I would be getting the best price for what I wanted. Once they were done, he outfitted me with a new case, cleaning spray, and took great care in doing a complimentary adjustment on a pair of sunglasses that I didn't even buy there! I came in yesterday with an old pair of glasses that needed an adjustment. Chuck Stephenson adjusted them for free. I offered to pay but he didn't want any compensation. He also told me that if I wanted new glasses but didn't want to get an eye exam, I could transfer my prescription from my other optometrist to their office. OK...guess I have to chalk this up to a series of miscommunications and a new web site. After my initial review, they reached out to me within 15 minutes. I received a phone call from a very nice sales manager, who clarified that they had the frames I was looking for and they would be transfer to Evanston. She also included a couple other options based on the frame I liked. Today I went and looked at frames...the one I had my eye on (no pun intended) was perfect! I liked the other options as well, but those frames really clicked. The staff was great, paying close attention to the measurements and really walking me through the fitting. Now for the important part how much? I was totally blown away...a designer frame (retailed for almost 3X my current 2 yr old Ray-Ban) top of the line transition lenses and the cost came out to less than what I paid for my current pair. Wha???...well they are a premium provider for VSP insurance and damn that made a difference! The My Eye DR. store that I'd been going to for many years has been fleecing me and screwing up my glasses order! Never again! The staff here showed me the exact breakdown of cost and what was covered and I have to tell you the overall experience "Made my Day!" I got the glasses I wanted at a great price...I could not be "HAPPIER!" I don't plan on going to any other store for my optical needs...wow factor 11...can't wait to pick up my new glasses...which are a new look for me, but it is a new year! 10 Stars********** read more

I'd had readers for years but knew it was time to get an eye exam. Dr. Schrenzel did my exam and wrote my prescription for progressives. I brought in my own frames that I like to see if they would work. I can't say enough about how professional, helpful and friendly Chuck is. He confirmed that my frames would work ( they have a great selection in their store btw). They were ready sooner than I'd expected. At first, I had a really hard time adjusting to the progressives. Everything seemed like it was slanted sideways ( if you've gone thru this you know what I mean). With Chuck's encouragement I persisted and he was right! It took a little while and patience but I got used to them and was so pleased I ordered another pair. Lana is also very helpful and friendly. Whenever I need anything else I will definitely go back. I'm really glad I went to my neighborhood optometrist. Chuck and Cole were very warm and welcoming. Dr T was friendly, thorough and patient. I really felt safe in her capable hands. Speaking of safety, the office also seemed clean and disinfected. Cole was also very patient and helpful, helping this lady with the dilated eyes navigate through paperwork with tiny lettering.
