Some have great knowledge bases and answer questions on eye care with in depth, accurate, and actionable advice. Dr. Glasser is both, and arguably the best at both "sides of the coin" of any optometrist I've visited in my life. Importantly, Dr. Glasser and his entire staff are efficient and pleasant. They honestly try to make your visit as pleasant as possible. In an age where healthcare tends to be actively hostile to the notion of customer service, it is refreshing.

My issue is the way I was treated on my last visit by his assistant after it became apparent to her that I would not be buying frames or lenses from the practice. Her attitude immediately changed when I asked for a prescription. She stood up, went to ring up my copayment, and when she returned with the prescription she remained standing and was abrupt with me when I asked her to explain the change in my prescription, which was in a format I was not familiar with based on what I received in prior visits. I'm an educated person who wants to know how things work and what numbers actually mean, not merely to be told that "any qualified optician will understand" the prescription. I was made to feel stupid and like I was an imposition so I left and fed the prescription into ChatGPT which politely explained it to me, including how a progressive prescription can be translated into single vision distance and reading prescriptions, and what the numbers mean. AI was more polite and patient with me than the assistant. Despite having no issues with the doctor himself, I will not be returning to this practice in the future. The barriers between patients and medical information are evaporating due to AI. Doctors would be well advised to ensure that they and their staffs at least match the courtesy of ChatGPT. Update: In response to Dr. Glasser's comment, all I can say is that it would have taken his assistant less than a minute to sit down and politely explain to me the meaning of the numbers. Regardless of whether I'm dealing with an optometrist or a cardiologist, I take it upon myself to gain a thorough understanding of my heath, which is what ChatGPT provided and the assistant did not. If the doctor doesn't want to take constructive feedback on such a simple point, then I suppose that my decision to go elsewhere is the right one.

He had a flat affect and set a negative stage. I said I prob need more than a routine eye exam but was happy to start w that. He lmk that a dry eye test isn't covered by ins (which is fine) and not to expect that I could do both in one visit (also fine). He then said, the appt will be 15 min tops, so it's not a time to ask questions. I said, of course I want to be able to ask a couple questions, espec bc of eye irritation lately. He said, "I see your insurance is (x) and that only pays us like $60 per visit. We can't give patients longer than 15, we'd go out of business" (!) I couldn't believe it. The rudeness and the gall of mentioning my coverage resulted in poor profit for them. I suggested he NOT say those things to new or returning patients and he said he was trying to manage expectations, that patients "always complain" they want to be seen longer but it's not doable. Talk about poor patient relations/ customer service. I realize what the medical system is up against w insurance is rough, but never has a public-facing clinic employee been so dissuading about the care their provider provides. I can't NOT recommend this place enough; take your business to an office that will value it.

Plus all of the staff are friendly and helpful. I recently had a problem with my right eye which scared me. I woke up with sticking and tears streaming from my eye and I had problems seeing clearly from that eye. I thought it would soon go away but it didn't, it actually got worse. The following day I went into Thompson Eye Care but Dr Gerald wasn't there so I saw Dr Kathryn. She was super helpful and gentle with my eye. She ran thorough exams and explained everything she was doing. By the time she was through my eye felt a bit better and she called in prescription which I picked up that night and I was told to return the next day. The following day my eye felt better but still had the same symptoms this time I saw Dr Gerald who greeted me and told me Dr Kathryn apprised him of my problem. He ran a couple tests and took photos and he explained what he was seeing. He asked me some questions which made me realize that I had wiped my eye with a tissue and it scratched my eye. This caused the discomfort and an infection. This is the reason I have been coming to this place for my eye care. This father/daughter team is super able to make me feel taken care of. Over the years I have had my eye problems handled effectively, they are both patient and helpful. I actually know a couple of neighbors who also come here and they both love their services.

I'm a fan!

I called to see if we could visit as a walk-in. The center closes at 5pm. I was told at 3:26pm that they were not taking walk-ins - which I accepted. As I looked through the website to try and schedule an appointment, I read that the center accepts emergency walk-ins. So, we decided to rush and head over to the center while arriving almost an hour and 15 minutes before closing. After speaking with employee Daphne, she shared the same messaging (including only walk-ins for emergencies). I told her it is an emergency and to look at my mother's eye. That prompted some sort of sympathy to try and help us. A few employees continued to chime in and "try" to support but confused us even more. Some saying they don't have appointments and that the doctor's are already gone or wrapping up. We were even told that walk-ins stopped at 2:40pm! Mind you, no where on the website or signage throughout the center mentions anything about the aforementioned! Daphne dares to ask, "why do you have an attitude? I helped your mom get an appointment." Again, her colleague just told us there weren't any appointments available to which I mentioned false advertising and reporting to the Better Business Bureau (which I plan to do). Mixed messages! To top it off, another employee decided to talk about us to Daphne in a way that was conniving and caused concern. Daphne refused to give me her name and the employee was scared to share it. I just knew she looked manly with horrible clown makeup. She was heard telling Daphne saying something to the effect of "don't worry, we have him on a recorded line telling him about not accepting walk-ins, don't worry, I got you." Daphne then hangs the phone because her colleague "helped" her. Again, I already knew about no walk-ins. We were there because they take emergency walk-ins (per website and Daphne's words). So, I thought. False advertisement. Finally, we were called to a room but to see a clinic (manager) instead of an actual medical professional. While the clinic manager helped us find another clinic for the next morning, she was not empathetic to my apology and concern about Daphne and her colleague. Overall, I do NOT recommend going to the Maryland Eye Care Center due to misinformation and false advertising of walk-in/emergency times.
