I made a lunch reservation here on a Friday, and it wasn't very busy. Our server spoke English, which was very helpful as our Spanish isn't very good. We went to several incredible Michelin star restaurants during our trip to Mexico City, but, in the end, Maximo was our favorite meal of the whole weekend. The design of the restaurant is such a vibe and the food was really next level. We had a 7:15 reservation on Saturday night and were taken to our booth at the back of the restaurant upon arrival. My husband ordered the espresso martini based on online reviews and I ordered my standard drink, tequila neat. He said that the martini was perfectly made and I was surprised and delighted that my tequila came with a side of fresh homemade sangrita. For food, we ordered a bunch of things to share. Everything looked good but we ended up with the roasted beets, tuna and kampachi sashimi, roasted leeks, tagliatelle with oxtail ragu, sweet potato and ricotta agnolotti, roasted chicken and the filet. I legitimately cannot choose a favorite bite because each dish was as good as the next. For dessert we had the French toast and the truffle ice cream. The only dish I would comfortably say you could pass on is the truffle ice cream. It was creamy and delicious but didn't taste much like truffle. Start to finish this was top 2 restaurants in CDMX. Best bang for your buck. Even though it's pricier than a lot of places you will understand why from the moment you sit down. The service was incredible. The staff was super accommodating and friendly. The pacing was so on point. I'm surprised this place doesn't at least have a bib gourmand from Michelin. We went a little crazy and had 3 different fish starters but they were all so good we were happy with our decision. The sashimi was our favourite. After we had a giant tray of jamon iberico. In the states is so much more expensive so we almost ordered two of these but restrained ourselves to have room for our main courses. We had chicken and tongue. The chicken had such a nice sherry reduction it made it my favourite. The tongue was very close though with a great mole to go along with it. The desert was a rhubarb explosion. Máximo was one of my favorite restaurants during our trip. Every dish was delicious! I'm glad it was our last meal before heading back to the States. When you first enter the restaurant you are able to take a glimpse into the kitchen on your left and a display of their meats. The hostesses were very welcoming and accommodating of the luggage we had to bring with us. At first we were going to order the tasting menu, but opted for ordering a few dishes as a table to share instead. I highly recommend doing the same especially if you want to try some items not on the tasting menu. The jamon iberico is a must as an appetizer! Had high hopes but it just missed the mark. I loved the ambience- the place is very cute. The staff is friendly and very attentive. Best way to go is ordering a bunch between people. The "apps" were by far the best part so the meal started really high but then went downhill. The beet salad was good- the Smokey flavor was liked by some but not others Burrata was just okay - nothing to write home about The baby corn was the highlight of the meal- it was amazing and I could eat that every day of my life. The plantain and macadamia and truffle dish was good but more of a dessert- it was sweet, warm, and well cooked - but again- an odd dish to have mid meal. Not very truffly which was good. Roasted cauliflower was good as well. Solid dish. Then it went down hill... Truffle risotto was a major disappointment. Lacked flavor and texture. Ravioli was eh. Same- not a great flavor and needed more textures. Fun presentation tho. Mahi mahi was too fishy. Tagliatelle was the best of the main courses but was very average The goat cheese ice cream was too goat cheese forward. Standing Ovation! I came to a late birthday dinner at Maximo on a Saturday night. We arrived on schedule for our 9:30 reservation and were asked to be seated in the lobby while the table was set. The space is amazing. Upon entry we walked down the long corridor past the window lined, bustling kitchen. Once we were seated we all admired the thoughtful table placements at each seat, decorative plates, napkins, candles and artistic glasses.The architecture inside was quite creative (vaulted ceiling inside of a former shipping container with rustic decor throughout). Due to having a large party we didn't get to select what we wanted to eat but instead enjoyed a curated family style menu. Each and every course was well planned and balanced with variety of dishes. Some of my favorites were the octopus, ceviche, onion dip with fresh rolls, eggplant spread with brioche rolls, the red snapper and the brick oven chicken. I also enjoyed that there was a small amount of broccolini and spinach offered towards the end of the meal, I would have liked more vegetables throughout the meal and/or with the dishes. By the time the dessert arrived we were all far past full so we couldn't fully enjoy. I had one cocktail, a mezcal Paloma that wasn't the best I didn't taste the mezcal or the Paloma it was quite bland. The service and food at Maximo deserved a standing ovation, if I'm ever in Mexico City again I would definitely return. read more

My husband and I had two reservations to choose from a 10:45pm on and a 3:30pm one - we chose the latter and God willing the hostess said our table was ready early! The interior of this space is post modern and very well curated between rustic and gourmet. The Sweet Onion was accompanied by an incredible croissant-like roll. I ate this slowly as the tastes were incredible. My main course was the Cauliflower Pinenut Almond Mole with a beautifully blended vinaigrette. Impeccably curated and while paired with a Vino Tinto from the Chihuahua region of Mexico - they sell it by the glass so I recommend you drink two of these during the meal. We wanted to step out of the norm while in Mexico City. Not that we had our fair share of tacos, but looking for something different and we definitely found it at Maximo Bistrot. Even before you enter through the doorway, you see a beautiful site of dry aged meats including beef and duck. The candlelight on your table adds to the ambiance of what looks like a converted, tin roof garage. Although we would have loved to say yes to everything on the menu, we saw the generous portion sizes and opted to get just the right amount of food. From the smoked eggplant and fresh baked bread to the burnt vanilla ice cream on French toast, everything was excellent! The wood fired Wagyu was one of the most tender pieces of meat I have ever had. Next time, I am going to ask to put the onion jus on the side so that the true flavor of the Wagyu comes through. TLDR: perhaps it was an off day, but didn't think what we ordered impressed us too much. Service was also extremely slow and a table next to us was seated after us, but then paid and left before us. Saw Máximo on 50 Best and was super excited to try it; everything that we've experienced so far on 50 Best in CDMX have been some of the best restaurants that we've ever been to (and we eat a lot). We were told to order about 5-6 dishes on the menu for two hungry guys so we got 4 small plates and two larger ones to share. Of the dishes that we ordered, our two favorites were the chicken liver and foie gras parfait with peach purée and champagne gelée, and the beer braised wagyu tongue with mole de olla and cactus. We also found the goat cheese ice cream with guava and olive oil dessert to be extremely interesting as well and I'm not even a goat cheese fan. Besides these things that I've listed, I've had better iterations of them at other restaurants or felt that they looked better than they tasted. I'll say that 6 dishes and a dessert was way too much for two people. Perhaps the waiter just wanted to make sure we had enough to eat, but the portion sizes were much larger than I had anticipated. Also, starting with the foie parfait was a great decision, but I didn't think about how rich that would be. If you decide to start with the foie parfait, consider decreasing the amount of dishes you order, especially if it's just for two people. In order to ensure you get to order everything you want, I also suggest not reserving after 8 as we did; many of the menu items we wanted were unavailable and they had to substitute a couple ingredients which I think affected our experience. The restaurant itself was very attractive and great for dates, however, service was extremely slow. There multiple times that we thought that they forgot about us. We also asked for water about 5 times before they finally gave us more and it took about 45 minutes for them to give us our check. Not happy about that. There was also a table of about 20 people next to us that were belligerently drunk and disruptive. While this isn't the fault of the restaurant, I don't recommend Maximo if this is the typical environment. Overall: my least favorite "best 50" restaurant in CDMX. We had dinner at Maximo when we were in Mexico City for a week earlier this month. They offer a tasting menu, but as we were planning on doing a few tasting menus during our week in CDMX, I appreciated that they offer a la carte ordering as well. First off, the restaurant is gorgeous. It felt like we were having dinner in a midcentury airplane hanger with a tree growing inside?! I don't know if that makes any sense, but it was a surprise when I walked in that door - WOW. Modern, cool, beautiful. We had a reservation, but our table wasn't quite ready/available when we got there. Luckily, they have a really nice area to sit while you wait - a comfy couch, too - and we ordered some cocktails. But we didn't wait long at all! Our meal started with their complimentary bread with charred eggplant, goat cheese, and olive oil (delicious). We also shared: Sonora scallops aguachile with avocado and tostadas (again, delicious); tagliatelle with beef tail ragu and parmesan (delicious - sensing a pattern?); lamb birria sincronizada (still delicious); red wine braised Wagyu beef cheek with a side of mushrooms (no surprise here - delicious). So, yeah, the food was delicious. The service wasn't the best when we visited. We had to ask several times for the check, and other than the staff that brought our dishes to the table, we didn't have any chat with our main waiter/server. But it was still a very good experience overall. Overall, the food was really excellent, and I would definitely visit again on another trip to Mexico City. There is a lot to like about this place, but is it one of the top restaurants in the world? Not quite. The devil is in the details. As one of my fellow diners observed "it's really good, but not great." First: let's talk about the impeccable service. It's terrific/not obtrusive. Water and water glasses are topped off without prompting, entrees arrive at the table with timed hand service (a nice fine dining touch), napkins are folded when diners leave the table, and no request goes unfulfilled. They run a very tight ship. And yet, because of the relaxed environment (not a white tablecloth to be seen), it all feels very unfussy. They thread that needle beautifully. Where the restaurant shines a less brightly is in the food itself. The appetizers are so promising (all of them were lovely - the hamachi crudo was by far our favorite, and it opened the meal as our first bite). But then come the entrees, and they are honestly a lot more pedestrian (we tried the bass, the lacquered duck, and one of the pastas). The pasta was fine - the sauce was nothing to right home about (honestly it tasted like it could have come from a jar of Rao's, even though by observing the brigade of 2-dozen-ish people in the open kitchen, I know it did not). The duck was glancingly tiny (4-5 pieces of breast scattered over a slick of sticky sauce, with two quenelles of lukewarm potato purée, three mini carrots and a lump of cold fruit purée). The bass was well-prepared but forgettable (sincerely: I don't even remember what the accompaniments were). The desserts were straight up disappointing. They bake the Madeleines to order (good on them for that!), but as the attached photo demonstrates, ours were overbaked and since we'd already waiting a good while for them, we just broke the edge pieces off and ate the more appetizing middles. The smokiness of the goat cheese in that raspberry Vacherin is a crime. It totally overwhelms the dish. A false note to end a meal on. I would consider coming back, ordering more appetizers (in place of entrees), and skipping dessert altogether. read more

A recommendation from a friend, and the existence of an a la carte option swayed me. The place truly exceeded expectations. The location has insanely high ceilings and great lighting. The crowd was loud and lively. The entrance passing by a window into the kitchen was tasteful. Service was excellent. I'm not sure if the ownership knows, but the a la carte with a large group is a hack. You can try as many dishes--the same dishes--for at least a third of the cost. Unfortunately, the kitchen did not pace the dishes, and we often had 4 on the table at once - overwhelming and probably the thing that people opt for the tasting to avoid. However, the kitchen can pace dishes out individually, at minimal cost, to avoid this. I never asked, and so I suppose I share a fraction of the blame; I know for next time. Overall, everyone was really happy. The onion dip was fantastic and we left paying something very reasonable per person (I forget). read more

As soon as I walked in, I felt as though I had been transported to a European bistro. The music and ambiance immediately caught my attention - eating here was an experience from beginning to end. To the left of the entrance is the open kitchen, and it was nice to see all of the chefs working to create the meals we would be eating. My friends and I shared a variety of dishes, wine and cocktails. My favorite items were the tagliatelle and the wagyu flat iron steak. The champagne honey cocktail is also a solid choice. Even the Caesar salad was unique and inventive - it's likely the prettiest salad I've ever seen. While the service could have been slightly better, I enjoyed my experience overall. #89 restaurant in the world and I needed to see if it was worth it. Was able to grab a reservation the same day. I first want to begin with the service. I waited 20 minutes for someone to ask me if I wanted anything to drink or bring me a food menu. It was a tad busy but still other tables around me were being served. Additionally, it was a tad unclear who my waiter or waitress was. The food was pretty good. I got the tasting menu. Some of the dishes I did not like, such as the black sauce that came with the bread. The tostada with veggies and beans on the bottom was also gross. Additionally, there was a hair in my food in the tostada. That was probably my least favorite thing off the tasting menu. The plaintain bread and octopus was delicious. The steak was very good and juicy. Overall I am glad I got the tasting menu since the two Items I really enjoyed would have probably been close to the total of the tasting menu. If you are going to get anything get their steaks. Very well cooked and any of their breads. 3 different types of breads came with the tasting menu and they were all very good. Wouldn't go here again, the service is absolutely horrible. For a restaurant this expensive I expect better customer service. The food is also alright, can find something better elsewhere. This is one of my favorite restaurants I've ever been to in the world. This was our second time coming to Maximo. The first time is at the old location. The old location was quite small and felt a little bit claustrophobic there. But it was a small place and they did outstanding work. After moving to the new location is much easier to get a table and the area as well lit. I recommend doing the tasting menu. We have done this both times and it has been well worth the price. To get Michelin star quality tasting menus in the US it would normally cost at least three times as much. The ingredients for the highest quality and we really enjoyed the creativity of flavor as well as presentation. It was truly artwork. read more

Absolutely lovely dining experience at Maximo. You have two dining choice, order off full menu or pre fix menu. We ordered off menu but couple next to us did pre fix. Like most upscale restaurants, portions are not huge but very high quality ingredients and taste have you leaving satisfied. We had octopus ceviche, mixed salad (really good), Wagyu tongue, Wagyu NY steak and chocolate and caramel cake. All excellent. They have a nice wine list and one can find reasonably priced bottles, especially from Spain, and many high value wines if you like to splurge. Service was excellent, just at right level. Máximo Bistro is an amazing restaurant. The kitchen produces food of Michelin quality and the space, while very loud, has an exciting buzz every night of the week. It is designed to be trendy and to attract the chic denizens of CDMX. Pablo Rojas, one of the well dressed captains, took very good care of us, recommending fabulous dishes. My Cactus leaves and mole "tostada", stone crab ceviche appetizer, was one of the best tasting dishes I ate on this trip to the capital. The Seared octopus, mole, purslane was out of this world good. The seafood dishes were also fantastic, as were deserts. Cocktails and wines matched the quality of the kitchen. We left the restaurant at 10:30 PM, and every table was still taken. Maximo Bistrot is one of the solid high-end restaurants in CDMX to try alongside Pujol and Quintonil. Everything from the birria to the tostada was delicious. The pate was also an excellent start and paired well with their delicious bread. Service is on point from the level of attention to the care they have - they also provide buckets for your bags so they don't touch the floor. We first ordered 2 dirty goose martini, let me tell you, it was the worst most saltiest martinis ever. Do not get. We had to water down with water to get the salt level down. Then we decided to order their cocktails and it was delicious. Learned our lesson, stick with with specialty house cocktails. For food we ordered: tuna tartare, ceviche, octopus, and wagyu steak. We decided not to do the tasting. The ceviche was extremely good. The right amount of tart, fresh and delicious. Tuna tartare was good too but compared to the ceviche, ceviche wins. The octopus was super tender and flavorful. The steak was the true winner of the night. It was cooked to perfection and it was so soft, melts in your mouth good. Fantastic service. From the moment you sit down you are catered to, plates are switched out with every course. The menu changes almost daily but the quality, flavors and freshness is consistent. After having fried squid probably 1 million times I have to say it's the best here, fried so delicately maintaining the moisture in the meat. Each course was plated very nicely too with sauces and pairings. The eggplant charcoal was surprisingly delicious. Smokey and smooth. Could of had more of it! The steak was cooked to perfection and the frothy buttery sauce paired with the fish was outstanding. Wow! Is all I can say!!!! Everything was beautiful from the dishes to the glassware to the menu to the waiters' uniforms. The wine list covers the whole world! The Sommelier came over to discuss the house red which was delicious! It was a perfect compliment to the creative and well prepared dishes. There is a pride that the wait staff shows and once you try the food you can see why!!! The caviar appetizer is expense but well worth it. Honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten! I cannot recommend the mushroom soup and seared scallops enough as well. On the back of the menu is a nutritional outline of some of the foods. That was such a nice touch. Best meal we had in CDMX. I took a star off because there were some hiccups trying to book the reservation and they didn't change our reservation like they said they would. If you have a party of 7 or more the only option is to do family style. This actually worked out for us because we didn't have to figure out how many dishes to order and what to order. All the dishes that came out were so good. The bread courses especially were amazing. The bread there is so soft. Dishes came out quick too which we appreciated since our last meal the night before took so long. Highly recommend you book this restaurant on your next visit to CDMX. One of the hosts at our B & B said this has been his favorite restaurant for some time, but that it was now getting too popular to score a reservation easily. Luckily I planned far in advance for a truly remarkable meal, and am so glad I went with their prix fixe option. If you are an open minded eater, this is the place for you. If your palate lacks adventure, steer clear. Plantain bread with caviar: Beautiful presentation, but an odd combo that I'm really not sure what to think about. It tasted a lot like the banana bread I make at home, but topped with craime fresche, diced red onion, edible flowers, and royal golden osetra caviar. The flavor of the bread overpowered its accompaniments, so I ended up scraping the toppings off to enjoy the beautiful caviar. 3/5 Octopus ceviche: Absolutely beautiful plate with tender citrusy octopus, little balls of avocado, and a sliced fruit I cannot recall. 5/5 We loved this. Fried chicken: Very crispy and tasty with a wonderful glaze. This was not on the menu, but a pleasant addition. 5/5 Escamoles, comte' cheese, truffle: Hold on to your innards! Esentially a thick cheese soup with plenty of shaved black truffle on top. Very flavorful and indulgent. (Not the truffles... they tasted akin to cardboard.) A surprise was the escamoles settled on the bottom of the bowl. Traditional Aztec fare, these are ant larvae that resemble maggots. Chewy and pleasant, any flavor masked by the cheese sauce. 4/5 because the truffles had no flavor. Wagyu beef tenderloin: Appropriately small, this was outstanding. Beautifully cooked and topped with course salt. 5/5 Guava sorbet, caramel milk: Refreshing and light, sitting atop caramel and crumble base. 5/5 Lemon grass and mango creme brulee profiterole: Again, just pretty darn good. Restaurant is pretty with a nice ambiance. I ordered an appetizer and an entree for myself and left stuffed. The onion appetizer was very delicious and came with a side of flaky bread, almost like a croissant, that ended up being the perfect accompaniment. The chicken breast entree was just okay. This place is special! The food is creative blends of Mexican and French influences, and the dishes are truly unique. The setting is a bit casual - wooden tables without table cloths for example, in a warehouse style place. Romantic vibes. Dishes-wise, I'd recommend: - Scallops, just amazing! Taste was out of this world. Pricey though. - Soft shell crab "tostada". Innovative and beautifully done. - Beef tongue. Melt in the mouth - Kampachi "sashimi style". Super fresh, and tasty. The onions and cheese dish that our neighbours had looked good, and also recommended multiple times by others. Overall, the food is good. Pricing is expensive! The menu is online. The portions are rather big; I'd say 2 starters and 2 mains between two people might be a bit too much. We had 3 starts and 1 main, and felt really full by the end, no space for dessert. read more

Given that we had just done a tasting menu the day before, we decided to order things a la carte as we weren't particularly inspired by the dishes listed. Right off the bat, the service was a bit peculiar. We were seated promptly after arriving, but then sat there without any service for what felt like an eternity (realistically probably around 5 mins). Once the menu eventually was given to us, the servers were a bit more attentive, but things felt very stiff and at some points meals were dropped off at our table without any type of explanation or greeting. Someone (presumably a sommelier?) came by and asked us what we wanted for the wine - what he brought back was incredibly mediocre at best, not sure if he actually has any sommelier training? In terms of the food, we ordered the soft crab tostada, octopus ceviche, onion dish, tagliatelle and beef tongue. The starter dish of bread and eggplant charcoal bread was interesting - my partner enjoyed it, personally I thought it tasted like a burnt puree. The soft crab tostada was delicious as was the octopus ceviche and the onion dish was a fun twist on a French onion soup. The tagliatelle was nice but boring and beef tongue was similar in that it was well made, but nothing special or memorable. Overall, we enjoyed our meals and the decor of the restaurant was beautiful, but we got the sense that it was trying very hard to be a fine dining establishment, but fell short in terms of the service. Also to provide context, we went to Pujol the next day and their tasting menu is actually cheaper. If you can only pick one, would 100% opt for Pujol instead. read more

Very gorgeous venue and ambiance. The service was absolutely superb. That being said, the food was very very mid. We order oysters that weren't very flavorful, the steak we had was not the best and was not hot. We had to ask for salt to make it enjoyable. The dessert was quite good though, we got a chocolate cake. The champagne and honey cocktail was also quite good. But when it comes to the food, which is why we came, my partner and I were incredibly disappointed. All aesthetics and hype. read more
