Living in San Diego and having a seemingly endless stream of taco shops/Mexican food spots can make a person a bit lazy. Why do I say this? Well, because with such a supply I've become lazy, dining at the closest option and not necessarily the best option. I have a taco shop literally across the street from me and with that being the closest option I end up there about once a week. Spoiler alert, it's not the best. So what place is significantly better option? You guessed it, Nachos! I'll admit it, the drive isn't too far to Nachos but it's far enough that I pass 4 or 5 different places on the way. I'll tell you this, friends, their carne asada burrito is absolutely worth it. The carne is juicy, the burrito is a big mother f#c$er, and the price isn't unapproachable. In fact, I think they're just slightly more expensive than the local "competition." I enjoy my burrito at the restaurant with a big ol' Mexican Coke in the bottle. It's just under $20 and worth every penny. I should also mention that the dudes who work here are pretty badass. We saw a TikTok on the California burritos and they did not disappoint. The fries were crispy and the meat to fry ratio was good. Their salsas come in plastic sealed bags now, which one is more than enough. The staff is friendly and remembers their regulars. Tried Nachos Taco Shop and the California burrito was definitely worth it. When I learned they had a Chile relleno burrito on the menu, I decided to try it because I am a fan. The burrito was of average size when it arrived, but I was a little disappointed with it when I sliced it in half and noticed a skinny cheese stuffed Anaheim pepper inside, not the proper poblano pepper in all its glory. Not only was the chile relleno flavor not there, but its size was quite insufficient relative to the rest of the ingredients in the burrito. The burrito came with a lot of rice and cheese which was not necessary since the Chile relleno already comes with cheese. The burrito also had a white substance in it, which I think was sour cream, I was not a fan of the cream in the burrito here. On a good note, their red hot sauce was very tasty. The service was friendly. The young lady at the counter was very nice, but I really thought the Chile relleno burrito was just okay. I hope they use a poblano peppers in the near future. Disappointed - I have been to this taco shop numerous times and I have always been happy with our orders today we walked in and ordered three separate menu items. One was a Carne Asada burrito, one was two Carne Asada tacos with guacamole and the last was 3 Chicken tacos... The chicken street was dry and tasteless and my son didn't want to eat them so I went up to the counter and asked if we could possibly switch it out for something else as we just spent almost $60 on three items and was immediately told no and that they would just "throw it away after going back-and-forth. A young gentleman from the back came out and said that they were willing to offer a discount on another item. Asked what the discount was for a Carne asada quesadilla to replace the dry inedible chicken tacos & he said a three dollar discount so from $15 to 12 which was unacceptable. The reasoning behind the three dollar discount was because "if he wanted guacamole on the tacos, it would've made them "wetter and not as dry.".. as a discussion went back-and-forth. He proceeded to ask my husband if you were in my position as an owner of a restaurant what would you do to his surprise? We have been business owners in the past and of an actual restaurant and our response was we would try to make it right so that we would keep longevity in our clientele and return customers... After going back-and-forth for about 10 minutes, he said will make you guys something else. I am so sad to leave this review. We've always loved this place for breakfast burritos and it was our go-to when we catered our daughter's daycare staff for breakfast. I'm pregnant and today all I wanted was the breakfast burrito! I got a sausage breakfast burrito (no beans) and it was literally 90% potato! Just crumbs of egg and barely any cheese. It was so dry. Not my typical experience there at all! When I showed the staff (I honestly thought they forgot the egg?) they said there are always 2 eggs in there even though we were all looking at a pile of potatoes.. they offered eggs on the side, but no refund or remake. I was splitting this with my toddler and wasn't able to take eggs on the side to go. Sadly probably won't ever get a breakfast burrito there again if this is their new "recipe." If this was my first and only experience, it'd be 1 star. It was inedible. I'm giving a 3 to be fair because it's usually a solid 4-5 star place with super friendly staff. Yesterday was a sad day, after frequenting an establishment over the the last 21 years, mind you moving away for college and living outside of the area for a while should be accounted for, so ultimately a mix of say 7-8 years since 2004, this chapter will be coming to an end. I now have teenagers who eat at Nachos, it used to be so good, but the last time one of my teens ended up with a day full of stomach issues after what he described as "sour" carne asada fries. Of course, we'd all wonder why continue eating it, right? Well, the answer I got from the garbage-disposal of a teenager I have was that he was "hungry." I gave Nachos the benefit of the doubt because its engraved in my mind that I like their food. So, here I am today making the official decision of etching around this engraving to rid it forever. I will no longer be going to Nacho Taco Shop, and reminiscing about going there every day before school to split a $5 burrito with my best friend, it makes me a little sad. So how did we get here? Well, yesterday, my son asks to buy himself some carne asada fries, I pick him up from school and we go get food (I wasnt hungry). At the house he opens the tray and I get a whiff; both little sister and I ask for a bite. As soon as I took a bite, I sniff the fries closer to get a better smell. At which time, to verify my taste buds' concerns, I took another bite leading to me washing out my mouth. It was bad. Something was sour and spoiled. It wasn't edible. I drive back to Nachos with the tray minus 4 bites. I was planning to be discreet about my comments, but then they started to argue with the customer (me). You really think I'd drive back with a full tray of food for nothing? The guy (i think the owner) ran to the back and started eating various food items, shaking his head. Rushes to the front yelling that none of his food is bad, claiming I am incorrect. He offered half price, and continued to yell about all his food being freshly made every day, and stating he just sold 10 trays of carne asada fries. To avoid typing our conversation verbatim, I will just state I am a professional, I don't tend to yell. I warned him I write long reviews, and tell him how wrong this is for giving my son food he can't eat and then not giving him his money back. He was red in the face, pissed that I even came. But really think this through from a business owners perspective: an exhausted mom (messy bun, bags, and ready-to-be-taken-off mascara) was ready to stay in for the night, drove back to the establishment to politely and quietly inform them the food was not good only to be met with attitude and argument. My kid just wanted his money back to get something he could inhale and not cause any issues. I would have written off the bad food probably one more time, but luckily for my family, and unfortunately for them, the rudeness I was greeted with has supported me in my dining days at Nachos coming to an end. read more
