I'm a little surprised this place is JUST 4 stars on yelp, but I guess Yelp reviews can be a bit of a crapshoot sometimes. Nagoya has been an absolutely excellent sushi go-to for me. I probably order from here about once a week, and have sat inside the restaurant once to order as well. The sushi is always very fresh, and I'm surprised that it's relatively inexpensive compared to others - special rolls here are $12-13 rather than the $14-16 at many other places. The staff is very friendly as well. I guess I don't have a lot more to say other than that the tropical roll topped with banana tempura is probably my favorite one, so definitely give that a try if you stop by. read more

This is absolutely stand out restaurant in Bergen! Must visit! From always smiling, caring, professional stuff to the beautiful interior! Sushi selection and the whole menu is well balanced, and many dishes have nice touch to it. Always super fresh! Everybody always treat as a family, even if you visit for the first time. Dinner for a special occasion, husband's coworker suggested this was the best place for sushi in Mahwah. Staff was welcoming and we were seated quickly. Staff were quick to get our drink order (no bar- no alcohol). Appetizers: grilled squid, sauteed baby bokchoy, dashi aged tofu and a crispy salmon skin salad. Apps came out quickly. Ordered the the cripsy tuna skin salad for my son - he devoured. Loved it. The dashi aged tofu was light, crispy & piping hot - delish. I assume the grilled squid was tasty as well because my husband & son cleaned the plate. The bokchoy was fresh, crunchy seasoned just right. Main meal: sushi. Sophia roll, Green River roll, Dragon roll & spider roll. Also an order of vegetable yakisoba for the husband. The rolls were beautifully made & were substantial. And they all tasted very good (I'd have to say better than a place in Nanuet we used to frequent). The 3 of us left no piece behind. My son had to tap out with 6 pieces remaining. I threw my hat in with 4 pieces left. My husband was the anchor and he ate the rest and the yakisoba!. All of us were pretty much ready to go home and put on our stretchy pants. The waitress comes to clear the plates & asked if we wanted dessert. I politely said, "ohhh no, we're good" . She clears the table and literally 3 minutes later she presents us with an order of tempura fried bananas with green tea& vanilla ice cream (on the house). It was a lovely surprise and we didn't want to offend so we tried it, which ended with my husband & I eating 90% of it. It was that yummy. Lightly tempura fried banana is delish. The sushi was just "okay". I think the prices are outrageous for the quality that you get. I know why this place has a line out the door. This place probably has the best sushi in the area. They have what I call "the new age" rolls (ie. soy paper and such). I think my waitress was new and she had trouble waiting on 4 tables. My water was never refilled at all and I had to wait 1.5 hrs between apps and entree. :( read more

I was there last Friday night while on a weekend trip to NJ. I had not been in years, but Nagoya had been my go-to sushi place for a really long time. Then I heard there were new owners, then Covid hit, then I moved out of state. Now I am back at home, and craving the Tuna Tar-tar, Sushi Pizza, and Dynamite Roll I had! Everything was so delicious and fresh. I will definitely be back next time I am in NJ. I can't wait. read more

Love this place. The staff is great and very attentive. They kept pouring hot tea for me. I must have drank five cups of hot tea. I love the jalapeño yellowtail sashimi, so good. Nobu still has the best jalapeño yellowtail sashimi but this is a close second. The crunchy crunchy is packed with fish. I ordered the tuna lover roll and the salmon roll. The tuna lover roll was so big I didn't need the second salmon roll. But of course, I ate the salmon one too. Lol. My other half got two spicy tuna rolls, his usual. My boyfriend and I came here to eat for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant was completely packed, definitely a good sign. We were seated right away at a nice table. The service overall was quick and pleasant. We started with the rock shrimp appetizer and my boyfriend got the Tom Yum Goong soup with chicken. The sauce on the rock shrimp was tangy and sweet, so delicious. My boyfriend said the soup was super spicy, which he loves. For entrees we ordered and shared the seafood lovers fried rice, which came with shrimp, scallops, and shredded crab. The entree also came with a miso soup and ginger salad. It was delicious. Tasted like hibachi fried rice! We also shared two special rolls: 1) tuna lover roll and 2) green river roll. Both were absolutely delicious. It was a frigid valentines day night and we were greeted by a server who immediately showed us to the nearest seat they could find which was by the door. I looked all around me and enjoyed the low chatter of conversations that emitted happiness or content. The restaurant was dimly lit with background music of traditional Japanese instrumentals that lulled you into a quiet and peaceful state of mind if you stopped to listen to the music. I ordered the combination box which included two skewers of chicken yakitori, vegetable and shrimp tempura, rice, and three pieces of sushi. My favorite part of the meal was the vegetable tempura and I relished every bite! They were light, crispy, and not oily. My significant other had the red snapper which was breaded fish in this sweet and sour sauce. I kept picking at his meal the entire night and I fell in love with the after taste of immediate spicyness which was a pleasant surprise. Since it was the end of the night, they were all rushing to clean up everything and kick us out the door. My water was not refilled and I felt neglected. It must of been a long day for them since it was Valentines day, so we finished enjoying our meal and left. Overall, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was welcoming. When my coworkers and I first went to Nagoya, we legitimately thought it was closed. It's very unassuming from the outside and is very dimly lit, so we were unsure if we'd actually be able to eat the sushi everyone raves about. Once inside though, we saw the place was PACKED, to the point that at noon on a Wednesday, we still had to wait 10 minutes for a table (not a huge wait, but this is in the middle of a strip mall that has 5 other places to eat). I ordered the Dynamite roll (with brown rice since for whatever reason I feel like that reduces calories and makes it healthy), two other coworkers got bento box lunch specials (one chicken teriyaki, one salmon teriyaki), another had the Napoleon roll, and my boss had the Millennium roll (wrapped in cucumber, so no rice). We also ordered the vegetable gyoza to split as a table (since everyone is way too nice over the fact that I'm the only one who doesn't eat meat and ruins their chances of eating delish pork gyoza). The salads/appetizer/Miso soup that came with the boys' Bento boxes arrived quickly, but we did wait a while for our actual rolls to come out (which isn't a terrible sign at a sushi restaurant since you assume that means they're making everything fresh, but we did have limited time before meetings so could have used a little more of a rush). Once the sushi/lunch did come out, there was no speaking at the table, half out of hunger, half out of how good everything was. My Dynamite roll was phenomenal (when you have spicy yellowtail and crunchy crab on top, it's hard to not be thrilled by it), and everything tasted really fresh, which is huge with sushi. Have come back a few times (and will probably go for lunch tomorrow). Definitely a big fan. Good prices, large portions, and fresh sushi (plus walking distance from the office) = win all around. read more

Wow. Restaurant makes me want to go back to other restaurants and give lower ratings. So good it doesn't compare. We started off with a fired gyoza appetizer. Very good but can't remember last time I had a bad fried gyoza. Next we had the tropical roll. This had spicy tuna, white tuna, avocado, caviar and banana tempura on top with a sweet and spicy sauce. Amazing. Again I want to go back to other rated sushi places Ive been and downgrade them. Last we finished with the duck entree. The duck was crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. The dish had pinapples on the side which balanced the spice well. We left completely full and meal was only $39 which is great for dinner for 2. Will be back for sure read more

If you are content with Asian Fusion then you may like this place. If you want authentic Japanese food, this is not the place. It is a Chinese interpretation of Japanese food and, Japaneses service, and it misses the mark in many ways. The rice: The wrong kind of rice for the meals and cooked wrong as well. Rice is about as crucial to proper Japanese food as anything else. It was neither Japanese rice nor cooked properly. This made for bizarre tasting sushi. If the rice is wrong, anything else to follow is tragic. The service: As is common with many Non-Japanese run Japanese restaurants in the US, here they serve the Miso soup before the meal, and waited until it was consumed before bringing out the mains. Miso soup is not an appetizer in Japanese meals - it is consumed along with the main. Not having it with the main detracts from the meal and the experience. Also Japanese do not use Chinese soup spoons with their Miso soup. The side dishes were also quite non-Japanese in style and taste. The plates were put down on the table abruptly, which is considered coarse and rude in Japan. The way the plates were taken from the table as well. In Japan dining is an experience of top service and pride in one's work. The Tempura coating was remarkably thick, hard, tasteless, and over coated, it may have been pre-made - Japanese tempura is always made on the spot and fresh, and much lighter and tastier. Tipping sushi chefs? This is not a Japanese tradition and would never happen in Japan. Very unlikely that there are any Japanese staff or chefs. If you have ever had actual Japanese food and have an appreciation for it, you will probably not enjoy this interpretation on it. If these things don't matter to you, then you probably won't mind this restaurant. read more

There's new ownership but still good sushi! I ordered a hand roll and tuna dumplings (my all time favorite)! I'd recommend you trying them. The place is BYOB so that's a plus in my opinions. Also, all the specials and secret menu items are gone since the change in management. A lot of the rolls that I knew from having a relationship with the past owners have since changed. It's kind of sad but still Nagoya. I would recommend going here for a great sushi night, just not on Mondays or Tuesdays because they don't switch out the fish on those days from the weekend. read more

I stepped into Nagoya for the first time for lunch and was rather excited after reading the inside cover of their menu. It was a warm, inviting story about Nagoya and the pleasant "journey" I'm about to embark on. Sit back, relax and enjoy the experience and what the chef prepares for us. Ok, I was rather excited after reading that, thinking that this sushi restaurant is different from the others. This one would be traditional Japanese and standout. It had the nice atmosphere, trickling water and such. My wife ordered the 3 rolls lunch and I had the sushi/sashimi lunch. After the waitress took our order, she brought out the soup, then immediately following with the salad. So far, very standard stuff and to the waitress, this isn't an "experience". She's rushing things. The typical salad with ginger was drowning in it. I uploaded a picture to Yelp. Not happy with the salad. Soup was standard and nothing extraordinary. The sushi/sashimi lunch was redeeming. Nice, fresh, tasty fish. To be fair, I also uploaded a picture of that as well. I was happy with the quality and presentation was standard. As soon as a plate was clean, the waitress appeared and removed it. Once we finished eating the last piece, the check was dropped off. My wife and I continued to chat at the table and the waitress returned 1 minute later to pickup the check and process it. Needless to say, there was nothing yet for her to process. I just looked up at her and said "hold on, it's not ready yet". For her, this meal was not about "an experience" as it says inside the menu. It's about serving me as fast as she can and cleaning off plates as soon as I'm finished, then bringing the check and getting us out of there. Phew! Perhaps some people want that during their lunch hour. However, after reading what Nagoya was all about, it's contradictory. Anyway, nothing here separates it from any other sushi restaurant. I'd say what they give you is very standard and that includes the quick service part. Their quality is good and that is an important requirement when it comes to sushi. read more

My friends and I have been going to Nagoya for years, it's our go-to meet up spot whenever we're all in town. Great sushi and BYOB - which is always a great perk. There are a variety of options for sushi lovers and non-sushi lovers. I normally opt for sushi, there special rolls are the best around, especially the Green Dragon Roll and the Valentine roll. The other options offered at the restaurant are also worth a try; I'm a big fan of the chicken teriyaki bento box as well as the udon soup. Overall, I would highly recommend Nagoya; restaurant is usually packed with customers, has a great environment and always clean! read more

A friend of mine told me about Nagoya, and he was right on about this place being terrific. First of all, I did not find it overpriced at all. I think it is very reasonably priced for sushi. Definitely less expensive than Sakura Bana in Ridgewood. I was not only happy with the prices, but the sushi was very good. There were lots of delicious specialty rolls to choose from. Based on the pricing, I thought they would come out on the small side, but they didn't. They were large just as one would expect from a specialty roll. I didn't notice if too many of them were spicy, but that's probably because I love spicy. I always do the soft shell crab and then look for my remaining choices to include raw fish (no crab or cooked shrimp for example) and little or no eel. There were quite a few that fit that bill. The yellowtail with jalapeno appetizer is totally yummy. They do this same appetizer at Nobu. Nagoya does it for half the price, and really is very very very good. The delicious slices of fish with a piece of jalapeno were heaven. THe crunchy crunchy crunchy was good, but maybe actually a little too generous on the spicy tuna. It was a very big portion for an appetizer. We also tried the new style sashimi which was good and pretty comparable to what I have had at sushi places in the City. The "California Uni" sushi they had the night I was there was pretty good and the price was less than I am used to paying for uni, but that may have accounted for why it was not the best uni I have ever had. It was good enough for the price though. Yellowtail sushi ..delicious. This place is definitely on my list now. Sakura Bana was my go to local sushi place, but this place is every bit as good and not too much further. It's cheaper and you can park which is huge since parking in Ridgewood is such a huge pain. read more

Sorry, I hate to be that guy who leaves bad reviews. But sometimes you have to do it. In short, the cuts of the fishes were ordinary, but the sushi rice was just plain off wrong and awful. Not being nit picky here because the following notes are already assumed in every sushi joint: The sushi rice should not be falling apart as you lift up the sushi even before you put soy sauce on them--and where's the vinegar in the rice? In addition, unless specified not to, nigiri sushi should already have wasabi in them. I am not a kid. Some of the cuts had the pieces ripping apart before it even reached my mouth. That's a no go. If you want great sushi, I'm afraid to say that my experience here did not leave me with a positive impression. Masa in Allendale is a MUCH better option (similar prices), or Sakura Bana (though closed on Mondays). read more

I don't eat sushi but my boyfriend loves their sushi and insisted I gave them credit for it. However I paid $18 for the mango chicken dish. The sauce was great and amount of mango was solid however the chicken was essentially inedible. Most pieces were disturbingly chewy and at such a high price tag it's not too much to ask for real chicken. I was extremely disappointed and had to just eat the sauce with the white rice and eat the snow peas and mango from the dish. I must give them credit for the gyoza starter because that was well done and apparently the sushi is as well. I have to be honest I was a little hesitant at first, lately almost every sushi place I have tried has been just so-so. I was super excited to find out that this place rated a "Yay! I'm a fan." We decided that we wanted to try a bunch of different rolls (always the best way to go). We got the salmon roll, tuna roll, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and some other roll that has salmon, tuna, yellow tail, avocado, wrapped in some type of pink seaweed. Every roll was super delicious expect for the special roll - which totally stinks since that was the most expensive roll. I can't wait to grab lunch there one day - their specials are great! Ok, I'm from California and I LOVE to eat sushi...I would put this place up against ANY sushi place on the other coast!!! The rolls here are not necessarily THE MOST creative HOWEVER, what they DO do, is fresh, tasty and has a really nice balance of flavors and textures. Tonight I had the Tuna Lovers roll which had the panko breadcrumbs on top with the spicy tuna...it was VERY Tasty and added a nice extra crunch which I appreciated. I could go on and on about the other rolls that we had but I won't because we ate like natural born PIGS and that would tell you too much about my problem with food....sooooo...just trust me and try this place out. ALSO this was my 3rd time at this restaurant and I have to say that every single time I've come here, the person at the door was very warm and friendly and chatted us up a bit.
