I have been a frequent flyer at Nagoya for a few years now. I love sushi, sashimi and rolls. I have never tried any of the hot meals here. The restaurant doesnt look like much from the outside, then again I feel like I've had some of the best sushi in unassuming strip malls! Inside the decor is nothing special, nice goldfish pond fountain combo in the corner and plenty of space, not cramped at all. For all of the bad reviews here, I can say that this place is always packed on the weekends with locals. The special rolls are delicious and BIG. My biggest complaint is sometimes I can't fit them in my mouth. For the price, you are getting a lot of food. I've found that the special rolls on the dry erase board are often great, although the sweetheart roll and tuna lovers from the menu are among my favorite. My boyfriend and I come here and share a sushi deluxe meal (large fresh sushi) and a specialty roll with edemame and an extra miso soup (the deluxe comes with soup and salad, FYI the salad is not good....then again I'm not coming here for great salad) and we are both stuffed for under 45 bucks ( total). The fish has always been fresh, big and the rolls creative and delicious. I find myself staring at rolls from other restaurants thinking "I just paid $12 for this tiny thing?" Beautiful restaurant! A little disappointed that they don't have a beer/wine license. Saki and sushi is like peanut butter and jelly, you just can't have one without the other. Oh wait! I just received a "complimentary" hot Saki, nice touch. I just ate an amazing Tropical Roll (spicy tuna, white tuna, avocado inside topped w/ tempura banana @ green caviar and sweet/spicy sauce. I wanted to try something different and this roll did it. The banana sounded a little strange but, it was amazing! If you are feel like trying something different, get this roll! Went here on a very busy Saturday night & had to wait about 15 minutes. I don't mind waiting but it was hard to get any attention from staff to even ask for a table. The woman working the front was very busy filling to go orders & just didn't have time to seat people. One we were seated some one came over quickly & brought us drinks. The restaurant is nicely decorated & intimate. Would be a nice place for a date. For appetizers we got gyoza, crunchy crunchy crunchy & I got a Kani salad. Gyoza was delicious & crispy. The crunchy crunchy crunchy was different & I really enjoyed it, I suggest getting if you wanna try something new. The Kani salad was a huge disappointment. It comes over greens that have dressing on them which clashes with the taste of the crab. Also most Kani salads tend to be dressed in a spicy mayo, but this was dry & unappetizing. As for sushi I just got one speciality roll after filling up on appetizers. I got one of the specials, the Alyssa roll. The fish was fresh but wow was it hot!! If you get a roll with spicy sauce just be warned, it lacks some serious heat. I could barely taste my food after that last bite. So to sum things up, great sushi, but needs to figure things out on the service front. For a busy place they handled themselves pretty well but could definitely improve! read more

Now it's more like a once a year affair. They have decent specialty rolls. The soups and appetizers aren't bad either. There isn't anything special, but it fills you up just fine for lunch without breaking your piggy bank. I don't know how Nagoya only gets 3.5 stars - I've never had a bad meal here. The prices are definitely reasonable for the area and you get a lot of food for the money. I've tried other higher-rated sushi places and I'm always disappointed, but Nagoya never lets me down. I highly recommend the sushi pizza (not on the main menu) and the Tuna Lover's Roll. I don't eat sushi but my boyfriend loves their sushi and insisted I gave them credit for it. However I paid $18 for the mango chicken dish. The sauce was great and amount of mango was solid however the chicken was essentially inedible. Most pieces were disturbingly chewy and at such a high price tag it's not too much to ask for real chicken. I was extremely disappointed and had to just eat the sauce with the white rice and eat the snow peas and mango from the dish. I must give them credit for the gyoza starter because that was well done and apparently the sushi is as well. I'm not quite sure what everyone else is raving about here but this place was average at best. We ordered the sushi dinner for 2 with the Ruby and Eric specialty rolls. People who have eaten good sushi know that the rice should not be dry and flavorless. Proper sushi rice is slightly sticky, a bit sweet and touch of acidic from the vinegar. The sushi rice we were served were none of the above. The fish itself was also bland. The texture was nice and smooth but every piece of fish was lacking in flavor, as if it was overly washed or something. There should be a distinct difference in taste between tuna, salmon, yellowtail etc. The only saving grace were the specialty rolls which did have some good flavor combinations. I would recommend both the Ruby and Eric rolls. I want to give this place 2.5 stars due to solid and friendly service. Since that's not an option I have to round down because of the apparent lack of sushi fundamentals here. read more

My husband and I come here when we're in the mood for impressive special sushi rolls (wouldn't be able to tell the difference between what they serve here -- from quality of ingredients to creativity of menu to beauty of presentation -- and a great sushi restaurant in NYC, for example) and BYOB (booyah!). Charming and calming decor, polite and friendly staff, fair prices. We've lucked out with seating, I guess we tend to head over around 6-7pm -- but it gets rather busy once we're there and eating, so if you go later, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Don't know if they take reservations. One tip - consider asking your waiter / waitress how many pieces come in each (specialty) roll - I made the mistake of ordering two one time and was served a plate of, like, 30 HUGE pieces of gorgeous sushi, and I simply couldn't eat it all v.v read more

The best sushi in the tri state area. Owner Steve goes to the fish market daily to get the best quality fish. Very creative rolls and accommodating to everyone's dietary needs. Uncanny memory of remembering what everyone likes to eat! Rolls are huge! you will not leave hungry. Makes you feel at home. Wait staff excellent, very professional. I went tonight with a big group of friends and the place was really great! The atmosphere and the decor was lovely and the menu selection was pleasing. Nice romantic / cozy lighting and there's a beautiful little wall fountain. There's also a nice size sushi bar in back of the restaurant. I got to start miso soup, cucumber salad, and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was delicious! It was my first time having it. Very light, tasty, and different. The soup was very tasty as well. Then I ordered a crab roll with cream cheese and a tempura shrimp roll with cucumber. Really good and fresh! The price was very reasonable! The service was great and its byob! I always give a 4 out of 5 only becuse in the industry there is always room for improvement that being said.... Bottom line a great local sushi restaurant. It is a byob so it keeps the cost down which means you can eat more and tip more. It's great for a family as long as your kids know how to behave in a restaurant atmosphere. They always have great sushi specials for the day and their hot food is just as good for those who are pickie about sushi. My wife and I go their a lot we live local and if your in the area you should stop in even if you have the kids in the back seat. read more

I love this place for lunch. I got to school near by so visited this place often and I always get amazed how affordable they are. I really recommend their chicken udon and their special rolls. I tried a lot of their rolls and I liked all of them. Also, they have special menu items depending on the day, which sounds very interesting... I didn't get to try them, but some of them sound very exotic. The atmosphere is great, soft music and Japanese-styled decorations. The waiters are nice too! Good portions but food was just okay. If other people wanted to eat there, I'd go again no problem, but it's not a place I'd actively seek out to go eat. The cuts of fish were odd, the type of rice used wasn't right or seasoned. The cooked food was okay though. Let me preface this review by saying the food was delicious, beautiful, and quickly served. The service was wonderful. I didn't catch my waitress's name, but she did say she was brand new. Anyway, the reason I've given only two stars is that the overall experience was terrible. This is a small restaurant, and they have overly loud music and garish lighting over the indoor koi pond. All of that can be forgiven, but there was a family dining at this restaurant who should have been kicked out, full stop. Three adults, a baby in a carriage, and a four- to five-year-old girl. This little girl was an absolute monster. She was screaming her goddamn head off, pulling things out of her mother's purse and throwing them in the koi pond, running around the restaurant (still screaming), and then the piece de resistance was when she urinated on the floor, and her grownups DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. Her attendant adults clearly are not disciplinarians, as the child was spoken to in a very soft, wimpy manner... "We don't do that, sweetie. No, honey, not mommy's comb." Etc etc etc. I was in town for a specific event and staying at a nearby hotel, and I'd been recommended to this place by a friend. I was really looking forward to trying their food, which was, as foretold, very, very good. But if you have a little beast of a child who is being allowed to run completely wild in your restaurant, everyone else is having a terrible experience and their impression of your place is being sullied. That family ought to have been asked to leave and never to return with that child, not to mention they ought to have been charged a cleaning fee for her nasty trick of pissing on the floor. I left a good tip because my server was terrific, but on my receipt I wrote a short note, expressing my disgust. Mahwah! Sushi! Yes! Because sushi in these areas is pretty hard to find... I have no other option than to go to Nagoya whenever I visit my mom and I crave sushi. Nagoya is by far the best sushi i've had in Bergen county. The samba roll is delicious, and the eel roll is amazing.. Because that's just what I love. The fish is not disgusting, and their sauces are pretty nice as well. Udon soup is my mother's favorite dish besides the sushi. And I love the seafood udon. I've ate a lot of sushi and this is in my list of top 3. The quality of fish is excellent and preparation is spot on. I usually choose the sushi dinner, or a cheap maki roll and a few pieces of sushi. The specials are always worth looking at. The "crunchy crunchy crunchy" appetizer, fried nori flavored with wasabi topped with spicy tuna, and the bok choy sautéed with garlic, are some of our favorite appetizers. Went today for lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. My wife had the shrimp tempura bento box and I had the chicken teriyaki lunch special. Both came with miso soup and salad. My wife had a California roll, the tempura shrimp and vegetables, rice and shimei, which is like a little dumpling. She loved the meal and my chicken teriyaki came with rice and vegetables and the entire meal was delicious. The service was excellent, the food was delicious and well prepared. Have only been for takeout, but was pleased with the quality of fish. The special rolls we had were very filling: the yummy roll, a blend of yellowtail and asparagus-- was good, but the millennium roll was excellent (though I prefer mine without the spicy mayo sauce). I received a gift card to this place and went this past weekend. It was packed! The wait for a table was about 10 minutes and lots of folks were picking up food to go. I ordered the sushi but saw other people went for the hot entrees too. I loved the sushi, fresh, delicious, generous portions. I also love BYOB, in the strip mall next door (where the Moes is) there's a nice liquor store with a friendly owner that is well stocked, just so you know. You'll want to pace out the wait by ordering some appetizers but as I wasn't in a rush, I didn't mind that it took a little while for my main dish. The inside decor is nice and the bathroom was clean. The staff was nice and working their butts off! I will come back here to try their hot entrees. read more

Last night we tried Nagoya for the first time because i read the reviews. We were seated right away, sharing an end table with another couple. We waited for half an hour to get the soup and salad with our order - soup was lukewarm. I noticed no food was coming out of the kitchen as i was facing the kitchen door area. The only food being served were from sushi bar. We tried to cancel order but was promised our order was all ready. So we waited for another 5 minutes. After getting the bill, we waited again for the server to bring back our card. That's when I noticed she was searching the floor area with torch from phone and finally admitted the CREDIT CARD GOT LOST!!! Never again will we go back! Server was not even concerned when she admitted she felt the card drop! She should have looked for it ASAP but instead went on serving other tables. Nagoya is so delicious! My wife and I have been going there for years and it has always been a pleasant experience. All the sushi is super fresh and we love the Kani Salad. I would have to say, over the years we've probably tried all the specialty rolls and they are all very good.
