Let's start: this is downtown and not easy to park but there's a little side street that usually has parking. It's dirty in there. Let's just get that out of the way. Everything is dingy and dirty looking, sticky and nasty. If I hadn't already parked the car I would've left and not eaten there. I went in for lunch and saw they have a new name, a new Japanese menu, and also their old menu but with the name crossed out and "Nai" written over it. The tofu salad was great, crispy and chewy. The food here was pretty good. I ordered the Tom Yum soup, and it wasn't really like any Tom Yum soup I've had before. It was served with rice, which I thought was unusual. It was also very salty, so I took a lot of it home and watered it down a bit. It was delicious once I diluted it. I think I may have been given the wrong dish, but either way it was pretty good. I would recommend ordering take out from here - we dined in, but there was no music, and our drinks were bottled. A very nice little girl took our order and rang us out. This was my favorite place in West side bazaar and Yellow noodle salad was always my go-to and that has not changed till date. I am so happy for the Burmese family that could expand into their own restaurant in downtown Buffalo. I am slightly ashamed that I have delayed writing this place a review for so long when I've already visited the place at least 5 times. The quality was consistent every time I've been and you bet I ordered yellow noodle salad every time I've been there. I'm a vegetarian so they kindly remove the meat part in the dish and serve it with sliced egg instead. It has a very unique flavor that's unlike any Indian or Burmese food I've had that keeps me coming back. It's redundant to mention that it's absolutely delicious! They actually have a decent space in downtown Buffalo where large parties can easily dine. Their menu is extensive from sushi to noodles to rice and everything my friends have ever tried has been great too (fried yellow noodle, seaweed salad, pad see u). The family that runs this are very sweet and accommodating if you have dietary restrictions. Even though this place is a lot further away from my office than some of the other places, I make a point of going there at least once a month. I cannot recommend this place more. Tea leaf salad! I'd heard of it, had never had it, but would order it again. From their menu: Tea leaf, fried mixed bean, cabbage, tomato, sesame seed, fresh lime, fresh chili, fresh garlic on side. Not sure what was crunchy in the salad (bigger than sesame seeds) and I thought they were peanuts on the side! Next time, I'll ask for the dressing on the side. In any event, service was quick, pleasant, and on a Monday around 1, not busy at all. Asked how the business was doing, since so few customers eating in (I did see a few come in for take-out), and was told the other days are very busy, but Monday is always slow. I'd eaten at this restaurant when it first opened, and am glad that it is surviving the decrease in downtown workers. Fried dumplings- chicken 7/10. They were good but they didn't come with the sweet teriyaki/dumpling sauce or whatever it is that dumplings normally come with, only a tiny packet of soy sauce. So that automatically makes them not as good. And they didn't really have much flavor on their own either. And they're not the best with just plain soy sauce. It's not the right flavor or taste that you want to keep eating. They're fried well though. Samosas 2/10. I didn't like these. Something about the spices with the potato inside tastes funny to me. The sauces that came with them was a weird hot sauce and blue cheese mixture and a sriracha hot sauce. Not even anything remotely close to being Asian dipping sauces. read more

I ordered food for takeout for me and my partner and wanted to try a few different things since we've never been here before. We ordered the Garlic Noodle, Shan Noodle, Tempura Shrimp Roll, and Samosas. Everything we tried was delicious with my stand out favorite being the Shan noodle. Don't even know how to really describe the flavors, but it was so good! The portions didn't seem as big as I expected looking at the size of the containers they came in but actually were very a perfect portion once plated. Saw way I felt about how dry the meals looks in the container (see pics), but once you stir it up its much saucy enough. The broth is rich and deep and full of delicious noodles and floating garlic. Mutu is the name of one of my cats. I don't know if Mutu and Sushi would go together very well, but if I had to guess, I'd say the sushi would last about 3 seconds before he'd wolf down the whole lot (despite the fact that he's a huge gargantuan house-cat rather than a wolf), and that would be that. I've never actually had the "Burmese Sushi" here which we've now been told is not Burmese Sushi - such a thing does not exist - but simply Sushi innovated by Burmese people once they arrive in the states, to blend the tastes of Burma with a type of Asian food that is already wildly popular here, mainly with hipsters and/or Alex (the two are mutually exclusive). However the soup is amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Some of the best soup I've ever had in fact. Just writing this review and remembering the last time I had it, makes me think that tomorrow will be the day I will rush back down to WSB and slurp it down again and be happy. It's very cilantro-y and garlic-y and those are two of my favourite -y things. I went back and had the soup again today because I love it so freaking much. So garlicky, so hot, so delicious, so good! I usually take the lime out so it doesn't get to limey (I'm already limey enough). Also the owner is a wonderful guy to talk to about the world and the lady that is often here is so adorable and lovely and keeps checking up on people who are eating her food to see how it is. I always forget to get this soup and make a bee-line or the amazing sticky rice thing at 007, and the combo at Abyssinia, as well as the insanely good fruit smoothies (order with no milk) at Gourmet Lao. But you know, this soup has a very strong claim for being the best item in the Bazaar. It's definitely in the conversation. If you haven't been to the WSB, you are really missing out. If you have, but haven't tried this soup, then you need to return, like, yesterday. And if you must know, while I was at first thinking about a Rack-a purer thought has now entered my mind. I didn't get the chicken garlic soup that other reviewers loved, so maybe I missed out on the Rakhapura's standout dish. We tried two rolls (avocado and the Lincoln), and three salads (mango salad, yellow noodle salad, and the fried tofu salad), plus chicken dumplings for the toddler. The yellow noodle salad came with chicken on it, which wasn't mentioned in the menu description. Yes, I could have specified that I was a vegetarian, but usually meat is a major enough ingredient that it gets mentioned on the menu if it's in a dish. The menu does mention chicken in some of the other salads, but not the yellow noodle one. My husband ate the chicken, and I mixed my share of the noodle salad with the tofu salad we had also ordered. Both salads plus the mango salad were pretty good, but if there's something you can't/won't eat, I highly recommend noting it when ordering even if the menu suggests that you're okay. My fruit-loving child loved the Lincoln roll because it had apple in it, so if you or one of your dining companions has a sweet tooth, I'd say give it a try-there are a few other rolls with fruit on the menu, too. The sushi rice seemed a little overcooked and bland, though, so they weren't my favorite rolls. The prices are pretty good on the rolls though. My takeaways if ordering from Rakhapura: 1) err on the safe side and mention any allergies/dietary preferences when ordering, even if you think the menu descriptions sound fine, and 2) I wouldn't suggest ordering from here if you specifically want sushi rolls, but if you wanted another dish and wanted to add on a roll, they're fine enough. read more

We've been customers for years when Rakhapura was at the West Side Bazaar on Grant, but now the owners have a great space on Main near Church. Delicious Burmese soups, noodles, curry, salads, maki rolls - all hand made in house. Traditional cuisine with an updated presentation. Reasonably priced, unassuming restaurant run entirely by the owners. If you're looking for delicious lunch or dinner options, this is the place. On my 2nd visit, i had the tea leaf salad and it is addictive! Tangy and crunchy and unlike anything I've ever had before but I'll def have again. I should say that I ordered takeout from this place on a Saturday morning via SkipTheDishes. I've been to the Westside bazaar many times and love the cornucopia of options. This morning I was craving sushi and they're the earliest place to open and the prices can't be beat. Unfortunately, the sushi did not meet any of my expectations. I ordered a combo roll, a spicy tuna roll, a dragon roll and seaweed salad. None of the fish was fresh. Every single roll had the taste of something left in the refrigerator too long. The texture was mealy, the cuts of fish were very thin. The shrimp on the combo roll had that mealy frozen-thawed texture and no flavor whatsoever. The rice was mushy and similarly flavorless. The cucumber in the rolls had completely lost its crunch. I sadly will be throwing away everything I ordered except the seaweed salad. Which I guess holds up to the refrigerator pretty well. I'm actually a big fan of poke and other seasoned raw fish dishes, but this was really disappointing. Between bland flavor and awful texture the end result was an inedible approximation of bad sushi. read more

This soup is SOOO good!! I did not like the sushi that much... A previous review commented on the "Burmese sushi" and I just want to clarify that this sushi isn't a cuisine from Burma, rather a learned trade that is common for Burmese immigrants to the States (albeit a delicious one). My husband made sushi in a grocery store for 7+ years when he first moved to The States. Many of his friends still do. So next time you're at Wegman's (or any grocery store for that matter), say "Kyae Zu Be" to the guy/lady behind the counter :) read more
