Unfortunately, I will not be returning due to the atmosphere. It was Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the owners' young son was there because he had the day off from school. I have absolutely no issue with children being present--he was happy, drawing, and spending time with his family. The problem began when his father took him to the back of the salon and, for roughly 45 minutes, loudly and repeatedly spoke to him in a very mean, impatient, and belittling manner while trying to teach him how to tell time. This continued while services were going on and felt normalized by the environment. Even after the door was closed, I could still hear the father yelling statements like how the child would "never be able to do any job" if he couldn't learn. I also heard the child ask why he had been slapped. At that point, I chose to end my service, paid at the front, and expressed my concern to the mother about the environment her son was experiencing. Another client attempted to justify the behavior by mentioning ADHD. As a parent of a child with severe ADHD myself, I strongly disagree that yelling, shaming, or discouraging comments are appropriate or helpful ways to support a child with learning differences. While the mother did apologize to me, I felt the apology was owed to her son. I left feeling deeply saddened for the child and uncomfortable supporting a business where this behavior occurred openly. Because of this experience, I will not return.
