My brother purchased me a Groupon for a french gel manicure with a 15-minute hand massage. I already had dip powder on my nails, so she had to take it off. Throughout the appointment, she pointed out how annoying it is to remove dip powder and said I should've called beforehand, since it was a special appointment and would take longer. Since I was the last appointment, she was able to take me. She did a great job and paid a lot of attention to detail! However, I was there for 3 hours. First of all, online scheduling (and rescheduling for me) was quick and easy. Lots of free and convenient parking is an added plus. I purchased a Groupon for a gel manicure based on the good reviews on yelp. Reservations were easy to make online. Taking off two stars for the following: - after one week of getting my nails done, I noticed some nails starting to come apart - I didn't do anything heavy handed and I wore gloves when washing dishes etc. - some nails are inconsistent. One of my fingers has a thicker layer of gel, one is not entirely smooth, etc - I asked for squoval shaped nails. One hand is more square shaped, and the other more round/oval - a little heavy handed on cuticle pushing - wish there was a wider selection of colors for gel mani And lastly, while she was trimming my cuticles, I got a small cut. Got a gel manicure for my birthday which was way overpriced for her services ($49 for a gel replacement and no manicure). Doesn't have a range of colors, used an electric filer aggressively and damaged my nails and worst of all kept complaining about my nails. She made me feel extremely uncomfortable by talking my ear off about how careful and awesome she is, meanwhile being extremely careless. Probably the worst nail experience I ever had. This is the best place I've been to for gel removal! I called at 4pm and Aree was able to squeeze me in for an appointment after 5pm which I was so happy about. Usually I get my nails done in Seoul when I'm there and get them removed when I'm back but the style/design and gel polishes are different to what the U.S. is used to with all the gems and stones, etc. Side note: Previously I've been to the one on Irving and 19th/20th where they rush with removal and can't even honor the appointment times, and they couldn't even bother to reply to Yelp messages after reading them. And another one on Noriega and 20th/21st where they only used nail files to get off thick gel polishes wITH gems inside the gel. They actually had the machines to get rid of the gel but the owner insisted on soaking and using nail files because the drill will apparently cause too much of a mess. And my nails were in the worse condition after with all the scratches they made and my nails were constantly breaking. Anyways when I arrived I made sure to ask Aree on whether she has the machine to remove gel because I would've left since I didn't want to take that risk after my previous traumatizing experience. She has had experience with removing Japanese/Korean/Asian design style nails so she knew it would take more care and time to remove than usual. She was in no rush and was gentle and precise. Usually when using the drill, it can thin out your nails but Aree was so careful that she practically just removed the gel polish so now my nails aren't thinned. She did an amazing job for me! I had to reschedule twice but it was so easy for me to pick a new time since its all done on her booking app. Aree is so sweet and patient! She is so detailed and delicate as well. I love supporting independent artists like her. She has a lovely private room at a bigger salon. Based on all the great reviews, I made an appointment to get a gel mani. Let's start with the pros: 1. Aree's place is close to work and home which makes it super convenient for me logistically. 2. Aree is super friendly and her area in the salon that she rents out of is clean and tidy. 3. Her prices are fair: $23 for pedicure and $25 for a gel mani ($30 if she has to remove old gel). Now for the cons: 1. I wish I had taken pictures because the shape of my nails were pretty bad. I asked for square nails and I understand our nails aren't symmetrical but they came out really uneven. 2. The gel she placed was thicker on some nails while others looked liked they needed another coat. On a couple of nails, the gel set on my skin making my nails look wider than they really are. 3. She took nearly 2 hours to do my nails. I know she's a small business and Yelp reviews like mine are hurtful to her business. On the other hand, after reading such wonderful 5 star reviews, I expected more than mediocre work. read more
