I was desperate to get my dilapidated French white tip gel off and found Thuy on Yelp in the Stanford Mall area confused why I walked in the Hair International Shop. Thuy has her nail salon stall in the far back right of this shop and without an appointment she asked me to come back in 1 hour since she was with a client. Let me tell you .... I asked for pink nail bed, almond shape and red French tips ... what she did was perfection! I dont do acrylics coz of work so I asked her to please ensure she doesn't shave off any of my nail bed and she thoughtfully listened and crafted my nail shape. We had some great small talks and when she was done I was truly impressed! Check the pics!!! My experience is completely incongruous with the rest of the reviews on this site. It may have to do with the fact that I said that I was not experienced in getting my nails done. I may not be experienced but that does not mean that I don't have any experience. Firstly, my manicure was scratched up one hour after leaving and began to emit a chemical smell that burned my throat and made me lightheaded. It also caused a burning sensation in other parts of my body that you came in contact with my nails and my nails themselves were painful. At this point I asked Thuy if she used 3(toxic trio)-free nail polish, she said she no. This made me believe that there was DBP, Toluene, and formaldehyde in the products she used, some of which came from unmarked bottles. You may now be wondering at this point why I continued with the manicure after noticing the unmarked bottles but I did not know that the contents of the unmarked bottles would end up on my nails. (I decided to trust yelp and give Thuy the benefit of doubt) By the time it did (it was a top coat) my nails were already painted and I did not feel comfortable getting up and walking out as usually advised. Secondly, parts of my nail polish discolored green after 2 days and in other places the polish was see through. I addressed my concerns with Thuy but was told that it was supposed to be like that even though I never had any of the experiences before. My nails were also extremely fragile. I was afraid to do things because I felt that they would tear off and had to be extremely careful touching myself or others as my nails had jagged, rough and uneven ends. I had to deal with all of this for several days before I could get them removed. In hindsight, another warning sign to 'get out' was that tools that were supposed to be one use only were clearly used before she used them on me. This is the worst gel manicure I have experienced that I could not be forced into getting. Below is some more information on the toxic trio. DBP Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a member of the phthalate family of chemicals. Phthalates are classified as endocrine disruptors and mimic the hormone estrogen in your body. They are proven to impair the hormonal development of male fetuses, cause organ damage, and may even instigate early-onset menopause. Though no human studies have been done on DBP, animal studies show similar results to human phthalate studies, including decreased fertility, hormonal disruption, bioaccumulation, and liver damage. The European Union banned DBP in cosmetic and personal care products, and the Australian government currently classifies DBP as a risk to the human reproductive system. In the United States, California classifies it as a reproductive and hormonal toxicant, but the federal government does not. Exposure has been linked to nausea and irritated eyes, skin, nose, mouth, and throat. There were also reports indicating that DBP might have damaging effects on the reproductive system. TOLUENE Toluene's fumes are highly toxic; studies have shown that exposure to toluene can cause neurological damage, decreased brain function, impaired breathing, hearing loss, and nausea. When inhaled too frequently by pregnant women, it may result in impaired fetal development. Animal studies have also shown that toluene is linked to reproductive impairment, immune system toxicity, and blood cancers like malignant lymphoma. The European Union has restricted the use of toluene in personal care products, including nail polish, and advises that pregnant women and children should not be exposed to its fumes. In California, toluene is on the state's Prop 65 list of chemicals that are harmful to fetal development. Toluene toxicity has been associated with dizziness, numbness, dry skin, and irritated nose, eyes, and throat. FORMALDEHYDE Formaldehyde exposure may cause cancer of the throat, nose, and blood. Health problems caused by formaldehyde include asthma, convulsions, nausea, and miscarriages. Repeated exposure can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs and cause abnormal fetal development in pregnant women. The European Union allows only limited use of formaldehyde in personal care products, while Japan and Sweden have banned it completely. read more

THUY GIVES ME LIFE. LITERALLY. Earlier in the week I had gone to a different salon to get a new set of acrylics. I really wanted stiletto nails, but this other salon had done quite a botched job. I tried to convince myself I liked them because of how much I paid, but I really did not like them. I was so unsatisfied, I was looking for another nail place, and thank god Thuy had a cancellation the day I called her. She literally answered my prayers. First, Thuy is located at the back of Hair International at the Stanford Shopping Center. It's a nice secluded area away from the rest of the salon, and I felt welcomed by Thuy right away. She asked me what my nails had looked like earlier because I called her telling her how much I hated the nails from the other salon. After, she asked what I wanted, and I told her that I wanted pointed nails and referred to pictures from her Yelp page. I honestly cannot even explain in words how amazing this woman is. I'm still on a nail high right now because of how in love I am with Thuy's customer service and skill at nails! She gently took of my acrylics, filed with precision, and has the best aesthetic eyes. She took care of me so well, I'm shook. She's also the most wonderful woman to talk to, so open and genuine. I've never had the experience of chit chatting with a manicurist until today. One thing that I will take away from Thuy is that because she works on her own, you know she is driven by hard work and the satisfaction of her clients. She is not pressured in any way and makes sure her clients walk away with amazing nails. I walked away smiling ear to ear because of my experience today. I'm sold. I'm a regular! read more

I have to agree with a couple of the reviews that were unfavorable. I developed a toenail fungus which, according to my podiatrist, comes from pedicure implements that are not properly sterilized from person to person. I found the mani-pedi area less clean than expected. Perhaps most people are not so finicky as I am. The fungus has taken more than a couple of months cutting the nails to rid them of the fungus and returning to normal appearance. read more
