If you are looking for a large restaurant in philly for Vietnamese food, this is your place. Situated in a plaza with a bunch of other Vietnamese establishments. There is a parking area. The interior had many tsvkes, some large, some smaller. I believe they regularly host events based on the section of the menu where you can order food for a large group. I got the shrimp with sugar cane wrap dish. It was a diy wrap dish. I was slightly disappointed because I thought the shrimp would be cooked with the sugar cane, but was only served sugar cane on the side. The sugar cane tasted kind of weird too... A little sour... The rest of the platter was loaded with mint, perilla leaves, carrot, cucumber, rice noodles, that you can wrap in the rice noodle sheet that comes with hot water to dip in. I also found a piece of plastic in my rice noodles. This is to say, nothing was incredibly mind blowing, but the food felt nourishing and the interior was spacious. My first time dining in this iconic stretch of Washington (shameful) and I'll be coming back to Nam Phuong again and again. Food, vibes, service, prices - all impeccable. I went with foodie friends and we all enjoyed everything we ordered. I grabbed #182, a crispy noodle dish with chicken, squid, shrimp, and more. It was so delicious and truly so much food. I also got to try the crepe with tofu which was excellent. Fish sauce, tea, and waters were brought out to get us started, and food came out incredibly fast. I think this place is good if you are looking for Viet family style meal or just a lot of options on the menu. Overall, food is like standard or above standard. Canh chua (the sou) is normal, not as good as the flavor in Vietnam imo, and also I don't like how they add celery.. Bò lúc lắc (shaking beef) is well-seasoned and very tender. Rau muống xào (stir fried morning glory) is delicious but a little overcooked because the texture is too soft. Cá kho (pottery pot fish) is yummy. Gỏi cuốn (summer roll) is normal but very affordable. Bánh ướt itself is good but the fish sauce is not; the meat comes with it is normal. Broken rice is good too except for the chả trứng (egg quiche). The mì xào giòn portion is huge, well seasoned, and noodle is actually crispy. The congee is a little disappointed. Dồi has way too much pepper, and barely has other organs in the congee. Curry is okay, doesnt have coconut milk like the usual Vietnamese style curry. Chim cút was good. I went with a big group of friends for dinner. This was my first time dining at the restaurant, and the food and service were good. We had a couple people running late and the staff were very patient and let us take our time to order. For appetizers, we got spring rolls and banh cuon, and both were great; the spring rolls were very crispy and the banh cuon chewy. It was my first time having banh cuon (a friend who had the dish in Vietnam ordered it for the table), and the texture reminded me of cheung fun but a bit thinner. For my main dish, I got a broken rice dish with charbroiled pork and an egg quiche. I can't remember which dish exactly, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Super easy to get a seat for dinner! I got the bun with beef. The beef came out wet with some sauce that overpowered the fish sauce that you're supposed to pour over the noodles. Any restaurant that has 270 things on their menu (mathematically) can't be good. This is just an irrevocable fact. Jerry's Deli in Southern California couldn't pull it off neither could The Cheesecake Factory. It's just a physically impossible feat to try and concoct that many recipes under one roof! Well, with that being mentioned Nam Phuong Vietnamese restaurant here in South Philadelphia did actually pull this off. Somehow Nam's kitchen CAN make 270 different dishes and do them well. Going over their very extensive menu, the task at hand seemed impossible. Well, all of my concerns were extinguished as each of our ten dishes for us ten patrons came out perfectly. One dish was just better than the next dish; and so on and so on. I'd love to write about each of our choices, but I didn't pay this bill and I didn't know the names of what we ate. It was all classical Vietnamese food that we all enjoyed. So, why not 5 Stars? This really large round table for ten should have had a "Lazy Susan" in the middle so all of us could turn this lazy susan in front of each person to serve themselves. The fact they didn't have this apparatus made this dinner distracting. We were all trying to be so polite, orderly and correct in dishing out our food that it became challenging. I've tried Pho Today that replaced Viet Huong next door but I still come to Nam Phuong as first choice. We've been coming for decades. They came by with both tea and cold water, and allowed us to really take our time to order. We ordered the spring rolls and banh cuon to share. The spring rolls were perfect with great crunch and great flavor. This was my first time trying banh cuon and I really enjoyed the soft chewy texture of the rolls. I also ordered their bun bo hue and was incredibly satisfied. The soup had a good kick from the spice and a well-rounded depth of flavor. No matter how many times I come here, on any given day or time, whatever I order is always delicious My suggestion: order the combination vermicelli platter with shrimp, pork meatballs and beef in grape leaves. It comes with vermicelli, lettuce, cucumbers and a variety of different herbs. It also comes with rice paper for you to create your own summer rolls. They provide 2 different dipping sauces - traditional sweet fish sauce and a fermented sauce that's more fragrant and is an acquired taste (my favorite). I didn't realize I would get so full from the appetizer that I also ordered their beef pho special (which I ended taking home for later). There was 3 of us and the appetizer alone was a meal! Nam Phuong is an incredible authentic and elegant Vietnamese restaurant. It must have opened soon after I left Philly in 2001 to California and full circle back. We fortunately fell upon this restaurant when we drove by the circle of Vietnamese restaurants and shops and a lady recommended this restaurant as the best. She was right! The pho was absolutely delicious as was the egg crepe and Vietnamese coffee. We loved the calm, peaceful, entreating ambiance and welcoming service. Absolutely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in south Philly. The fact that they have large space to have a party amazes me in such a small strip mall. It is situated near an Asian grocery store next to several other Vietnamese restaurants. Parking is generally available and free, however you'll be lucky enough to score a spot. The services are excellent; they will do everything they can to make your meal pleasant. One of my favorite dishes that they have there that I couldn't find anywhere else is the large sized appetizer 124. Pho is on the larger portion end, plenty of bean sprouts to come with. I am a big fan of Vietnamese food - but before Philly I had mostly gone to Viet restaurants that sells the more common dishes: banh mi, pho, vermicelli, egg noodle, fried rice, etc. I was so excited to see the Viet restaurants here have more variety. This place especially had many amazing choices. We got the lotus salad instead of the common papaya salad we would usually get. We also ordered shaking beef and clams sautéed in black bean sauce. Lotus roots salad: well done dish and looks so aesthetically pleasing with the shrimp chips. The waitress said the papaya salad doesn't come with the shrimp chips, only lotus one. I'm not used to the flavoring of this dish - so wasn't a big fan. Definitely an acquired taste. Shaking beef (bo luc lac): tastes sooo good, wow I haven't had shaking beef that disappoints. The seasoning is just right - and it pairs so well with the lemon/pepper dipping sauce. This is my new favorite viet dish! Clam sautéed in black bean sauce: amazing!! I love clams dishes in Asian cuisines. So flavorful... the black beans are not your typical black beans, they are fermented black soybeans used in most Asian cuisines. (Similar sauce used in Chinese or Korean style black bean sauce noodle - jajangmyeom) This place is very spacious, if you have a small party, you won't need to make reservations. I was in Camden and was yelping for places to eat and Philly had the best food options since it was literally across the bridge. I was in a mood for Vietnamese food and found this spot. Upon arrival, this was part of a strip mall where parking was not easy on a weekend, I went around a few times and found a spot, this was around lunch time. The menu has many options. I chose summer roll, vermicelli with chicken, and todays special of soft shell crabs Thai style. The prices are definitely very reasonable and cheap relative to nyc metro area. Summer roll was $4.95, soft shell crabs $19.95 and chicken vermicelli $11.95. The summer rolls were good, the peanut sauce was a bit watery. Chicken vermicelli was standard, they give you decent portions of vermicelli and grilled chicken. Soft shell crabs was fried in a Thai sauce, they gave a lot of soft shell crabs, I think at least three. Service was ok. They didn't really check up on you. And I had to ask for certain things when I expected them to offer it to me. Ambiance was ok, on the darker end. The place was huge, lots of tables everywhere. I didn't have to wait at all. read more

While the food was acceptable, i feel it's important for me to share a concerning hygiene situation. We ordered the roll your own vermicelli wraps. We were confused as why they gave us so many rice paper wraps because it seemed wasteful, but as a staff was cleaning up the table, we saw he didn't throw away the wraps. He brought them back to the kitchen. I was really grossed out by the thought the staff was recycling food that was already on another customer's table. Very homey Vietnamese establishment. We walked in around 8:30pm and were seated immediately. My cousin frequents this place so she knew what to order immediately which allowed us to get our order in before kitchen closes. The 3 kinds of meat was the star of the show! Fried shrimp paste, sliced pork patty and basil wrapped beef. We ordered 3 orders of the 3 kinds of meat but it was split into 2 plates for placement on our lazy Susan. 2 types of sauce provided. Your classic fish sauce and a thicker saltier fish sauce. It was very very filling. There were 6 of us splitting these 2 large platters and we ended up taking half of one platter home.
