Honestly there is nothing, i can say that is negative about this grocery store. The family that owns the grocery are so nice, and explain everything when you have questions. the options for fresh food us amazing. The Masala Dosa, Paneer Paratha and Samosas are awesome. Actually all the hot food is great. The food is vegetarian which is a very nice change. All the combos come with the Indian rice, which I love. Very good prices, and good amount food. The grocery part has a wide variety of spices, and fresh herbs, peppers, coconuts, mangoes (green and ripe ones) and dried spices, items that are not easy to find. Devious characters; best to stay away. When they ring up the food at the counter, they do not show the tax and state how much it is and that it is separate. That is odd to begin with. Next, the guy owes me $.80 in change but walks away and so I let it go. About four minutes later I went to pay for a friend's food and the same guy was there so when it got to be something with $.30 over the dollar, I just said take it out of the $.80 from before and he did not say anything but accepted the transaction! Additionally, the food was not that good and basically they just piled a bunch of rice into a large section of the plate and two tiny little sections had lentils and whatever else we chose. P. S. I went to this place yesterday Saturday for lunch expecting nothing but came out pleasantly surprised, the best kind of surprise really. The sabudana kichdi was delicious not overly spicy , the bhindi/potato side dish was out of this world, the gujrati dal was so authentic, and the veg Manchurian was unbelievably delicious!! 5 stars on the dal, I ordered a small container to go. The only disappointment was the samosa which tasted rubbery and something that was fried a day ago! Overall it was great, hope the food is always this good and not a fluke! I stopped to get some simple spices here, but decided to get lunch here also. The food was average or less than average. The paneer was extremely salty, almost inedible. The split chana dish was also very salty. The samosa was okay, but the crust was very thick. The food felt cheap, not sure how else to put it. The 4 dollar king coconut water was sour tasting. Maybe that's a thing but I didn't like it. General atmosphere was not outwardly friendly or accomodating. I nodded at one of the workers and he just looked at me and ignored me and walked past. By far the most bothersome thing about this grocery is that the majority of the spices are not priced. INCREASED PRICES, SMALLER HELPINGS. As a regular visitor, I can tell that the food quality and taste have significantly improved over the least 2 years. However the latest bump in their pricing has put them at par with, or actually over sit down restaurants. Parathas - 8.99,Dosa - 10.99, Pav Bhaji 9.99! WHAT! Plus they have started skimping on helpings on the lunch specials. Don't be shy to ask for a more generous helping if you find them trying to just fill the tiny spaces on their food trays. Returned recently for lunch. The food was much better than it had been. Not too salty. We arrived early, so the food was very fresh. The potato and cauliflower dishes (vegan) were excellent. The pakora and sauce for it were much better than in the past. Prices have gone up, like everywhere. We shared the 3 item combo for $12.99. Still a good deal. Plenty for two people. After eating, we did a bit of shopping in their grocery section. I found some excellent leaf orange peko tea for a good price. We'll return. read more

It really was like chewing on a rubber eraser - tamarind chutney: watery - mint chutney: no mint whatsoever. Probably cilantro only. Watery. - samosa: way too much dough, super thick - serving on recycled fiber trays: this was an epic fail. Driven by this place multiple times, but I've never gone in until now thanks to my Fivestars app. My Fivestars app showed that I can get a free dessert. Went into this little shop which is filled with many things from India like food. I'm not familiar with Indian dessert, so the guy behind the register was kind enough to pick two desserts for me and I must say, I absolutely LOVED what he chose for me. I honestly wouldn't have known what to pick because none of it looked good to me. Boy... never judge a book/dessert by it's cover! While we are familiar with before but we couldn't tell what the hot dishes were without labels. The staff were kind and described each item and ingredients. We are not vegan but the guest after us was and they alerted him that one of the items contained butter. They really know their food and proud to talk about it! They gave us recommendations on paratha and rice. We did the Yelp check in and got a free samosa as well. Namaste Spiceland. What a great name, right? Fortunately, the great part doesn't just end there. If you have read other reviews, you must know that Namaste Spiceland is one part Indian grocery store and one part restaurant. I don't normally shop here for groceries, but I do come here for the restaurant. They offer ready made food similar to a cafeteria where you can choose items to put onto your plate. These dishes change daily so you can try different items and it doesn't get boring to eat here often. They also have stuff on the menu that they cook on the spot when you order it. This obviously takes a little more time to make but they are usually pretty fast. Even during busy times, I have never had to wait more than five or six minutes to get my order. Everything is vegetarian, some dishes are vegan, and there is no meat served here at all. Everything I have tried is delicious. It may not smell that great, but trust me, the flavors are better when inhaled by your mouth than by your nose. There is plenty of seating to dine in or you can order to go. I'm pretty sure they are on some of the delivery apps too but I haven't used them. They do have a small parking lot which can fill up during peak times. read more

Namaste Spiceland is a hidden gem of Indian cuisine. Nestled in a cozy strip mall on Hill off the 210 in Pasadena, this is our go-to spot for a quick, delicious, and affordable Indian feast. The Mysore Masala Dosa is a delightful concoction of spiced potatoes wrapped in a light, crispy crepe, offering a perfect balance of flavor and texture. It is sizeable. We usually also get the "Do" combo, which includes rice and 3 items from the buffet. The buffet options change every day and there are usually about 5-8 dishes to choose from, including different curries, paneer, dal, vegetables, and others. We usually go for their curries and vegetables, which are always hearty, richly spiced, often earthy, and full of complex flavors. Even though the food is all vegetarian (there are no meats at the entire store), their dishes are so incredibly rich and flavorful that you won't miss having meat. One quirk of this place is that the dishes often differ depending on who is cooking that day. It's actually fun that you get a different take on the dishes each time you go and they are consistently excellent. We usually get naan with the combo (either plain or garlic, the garlic is very garlicky), and it's worth mentioning that the naan is quite unusual in being soft, fluffy, and moist, almost buttery (rather than the typical charred, drier naan). This makes it perfect for rolling up and dipping in their delicious chutnies or curries. Speaking of the chutnies, they make them all in house and fresh. The mint chutney is a special standout and we always ask for two tubs. The Pav Bhaji Dosa is also a standout, with a hearty tomato flavor and other spiced vegetable and onion notes, and a tangy and subtly sweet finish. The restaurant is in a grocery store, where they have very fresh produce, including the freshest ginger in Pasadena. And they often have fresh turmeric, which is not so easy to find. The value here is incredible. You get a huge amount of food for extremely reasonable prices. Finally, the staff are super nice. They're always helpful and patient. Shashi is especially awesome and always greets us warmly. If you call your food in, they always have it ready in about 5 minutes by the time we make it over there. We come here, every so often, when we need to get OUT of DtLA for a bit, and want great no-fuss food (and maybe a few grocery items). First- the food. Hot dish counter where you can buy containers of their offerings for the day or a combo meal. Someone in the back kitchen always cranking out fresh supplies. We always do the 3-item combo and have to get a to-go container for what we can't finish. The combo comes with rice (jasmine or flavored), some predetermined sides (bread, papadum, samosa, pickled veggies, several sauces) and you choose 3 veggie dishes - usually a paneer, a dal, and a chickpea dish are available. There are usually 6-7 options - and so far not a one has been bad. Or even marginal. Today got a butter masala, crispy cauliflower, a dal, a mixed veg, and chana masala. Between the two of us, we tried 5 of the 7 (there was also an eggplant and an okra we didn't get) and ALL WERE GOOD. The dal today was different - in a good way - I wished I'd gotten us both that. The only real thinking you have to do is avoid dishes with something you know you don't like. (For me, today it was okra. Jus' not my thang.) Second - the market. Small, but packed. Produce, dairy, frozen, shelf stable - I wander and if I don't need another huge of garlic paste, I pick up what catches my eye. They help explain their food options to those who need it and is really good and patient when making recommendations. The portion size is too big- haha. Everything they offer is vegetarian. Most of the items were already prepared and laid out on the steam table, so the quality can vary depending on when you go. They have several combo options (Ek and Do, or Hindi for one and two), and the latter came with a potato and pea-filled samosa, rice, chapati, pickle with chopped radishes and carrots, raita, pappadum, and a choice of three vegetables/curries from the steam table. My picks were the chana masala, dal makhani, and paneer jalfrezi, made of paneer cubes cooked with bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes in a spiced curry. In addition to plain basmati rice, they also had a green mint-flavored rice mixed with peanuts, lentils, and mustard seeds, which I couldn't help but order. Each component of the thali was super flavorful and nicely spiced, and everything came together in perfect balance. Though some items had been sitting out for a while and were a bit past their prime, the one thing that's made fresh to order here is their flatbreads. In addition to the chapati, I also got an order of their garlic naan, which was cooked on a tava (rather than a tandoori) and had an amazingly soft, chewy texture and plenty of garlic flavor. I live in the neighborhood, and I've been going to this grocery for nearly 8 years now and have been very satisfied until my last few trips wherein it has become clear to me that the servers behind the counter are purposefully trying to cheat their customers, even their long term customers like me, with ridiculously small portions. Miraculously, they have all suddenly forgot how to fill a cup, or takeout tray compartment, up to the top with food. In the past they used to even overfill and compress the contents with the lid. Now, they fill about half way. So you are paying the same amount for half the food. Don't believe me? Check the picture. The first few times it happened I chalked it up to chance/randomness, probably not on purpose, but three times in a row is no longer chance. After eight years I'm going to stop getting my meals at this grocery and I encourage you to too, unless of course you like to pay 17 dollars for a few ounces of food, and be treated like you are too stupid not to notice. read more

Namaste is really reminiscent of the India Sweets and Spices chain: half grocery store, half vegetarian steam trays. We stopped by for lunch and shared two lunch specials and threw in a Mysore Dosa for good measure. For the lunch specials, you can pick from about 4 -5 dals and curries if the day in compartmentalized trays with rice, naan, pickled vegetables. This was not my favorite. Everything was very salty and a little too pungent for my tastes. For example, the pickled vegetables were too salty to eat and the curries seemed like they had wayy more curry spices than usual. They were, however, generously sized and two people could easily share one plate. The Mysore dosa, on the other hand, was incredibly good. This version smears a red, hot (but not too hot) chili paste over the dosa and is filled with potatoes. I want to come back for just this! read more

I came here for some groceries and wanted to also check out their menu. Their menu offers vegetarian food only. I got some samosas for the family, a mango lassi, and some hot chai. I can't speak on the samosas, since I didn't have any. The mango lassi was already made and refrigerated. I don't know how long it's been sitting there. It didn't taste fresh, either. There was an unpleasant after taste. The chai was just disgusted. Granted, I'm a chai connoisseur and I'm very critical when it comes to judging them. However, there was no taste but the burnt taste of it. The worker at the cashier also did not give me some sweetner, napkins, and spoon as I had requested. I had to go back in to get some. This is fine. Food are sometimes a big hit or a miss. This is my real complaint earning this establishment 1 star. At the back, in the produce section, there was loose wire just sticking out. A customer walking down the aisle tripped on it. Thankfully, he was able to hold himself up preventing a hard fall. The picture I had posted is after the man had tripped over it and kicked it under the display area. I told a worker and he rushed toward it. I am unsure whether this issue has been fixed. This is a very dangerous blunder on many different levels. Safety is utmost important, so I hope they took care of it right away. read more
