It is really sad that after 40 years of living in Seattle I still struggle to locate good and clean soul food in the area. I literally sat in my car for 20 minutes trying to figure out where to get some good soul food. I already had in my mind that any plans to stay within my meal plan were out the window. Then Nana's popped up on my search, so I said let's give it a try. What a great choice and I had very little guilt about breaking my meal plan. This is a family-owned business the mom makes all the food and it's the owners great grandma's original recipes. I didn't have a photo of the food because it looked so good I ate them before I remember to take a photo. The cat fish is good size and not overly heavy on the corn meal. My wife and my friend love the pork chops. The fried shrimps was pretty good as well. This place definitely has some great sides. I like the collard green and the cabbage. The sweet yams had a great spice to it, but a little too sweet for me. I would love to try the Mac and cheese next time. It looks yummy. Since Nana grew up in Virginia and all of my Family is in Virginia where I also grew up, I decided to get takeout for dinner at the Covington location for the first time this evening. I have to say I am a little disappointed though. I would not say it was worth the nearly $57 for a meal and drinks for the two of us. Bein' a southern gal, I went in expecting them to have cornbread as it is a staple with nearly every lunch and "supper"/dinner in the Southeast, but sadly they didn't have any. They offer both collard and mustard greens but only had mustard, which wasn't a huge letdown as they were cooked perfectly. The candied yams, which we used to call sweet potatoes growing up were good, but had a bit too much nutmeg in them. Still good though. Some of the chicken tenders were nearly burnt. Worst of all, the potatoe salad had sugar in it!! I had never had sugar in potato salad in my life, and my family has lived all over Virginia for hundreds of years. I took one bite and couldn't even eat the rest of it. All I could taste was sugar and celery seed. Best part of the meal was the mustard greens. They would have been much better with some cornbread. Back home, we usually had vinegar on our greens but I didn't see any being offered in the dining area. I've been to Nana's twice. I had read some mixed reviews, but my brothers and I wanted to give it a try. The first time we tried to go around 6:00 on a Sunday and we realized it closed early. So we went the following Sunday around 4:00 pm. Upon walking in, we found the restaurant to be clean, bright and inviting. The menu has about 6 mains and 6 sides. Some might find that small, but if you're like me and watch a lot of Restaurant Impossible, you know this is great because it means quality over quantity. I'm all about that. We all got 1 main + 2 sides, one brother and I got the porkchops, mac & cheese and greens and the other brother got fried chicken, mac & chesse and string beans. While we were waiting, we got to meet one of the owners Todd, who talked with us and told us the vision behind Nana's and how it came to be. Being a small business owner myself, I found this to be nice and my brothers thought it was a nice touch. The food came and everything was GREAT. The porkchops were well seasoned, the mac & cheese was cheesy with the right amount of topping to make it crunchy and the greens were delicious. I tried some of my brother's string beans as well and they were really good. The food and portion sizes are well worth the money. I liked it so much I bought my husband to try it and two of my friends, who had already been to Nana's and we're headed there anyway, came along. We had a great Sunday lunch and we saw Todd again who greeted us warmly and made sure we enjoyed our meal. All in all, I recommend Nana's and I'll be back for sure! read more

On Jan 10,2024 I ordered chicken wings, catfish dinner and oxtail. The chicken wings were great, however noone could eat the greens that tasted like someone poured a cup of salt into the pot. I also ordered the peach cobbler - that cost 7.00 dollars - and received a small container that was half full. I remember when the restaurant first opened I thought the food was excellent. What happened Mr.Minor? I called to speak to someone about the situation and was told to call back in ten minutes. I called back 20 min later and nobody picked up. After a couple times I gave up. it's a shame that I have to write a bad review because the food is great and I loved going there!! until I went there with my girlfriend and was mistreated all because we were a biracial couple! When we ordered we ordered our food to dine in at the establishment and as we sat down and waited for our food it become obvious we were a couple and that's when we started getting treated differently then we were told that they were short staffed and they didn't have plates for us to eat there, so we had to take our food to go. mind you a couple that was of the same race just sat and ate their food when we were ordering our food And while we waited for our food, so that didn't make sense at all. So I won't be spending my money at a restaurant where I'm mistreated all because I'm leabian biracial couple!!! I don't believe it was because I'm gay but it could have been part of it but I do know it was because I am white and my girl is black . Any other time I came into that restaurant and ate with another woman who was as the same race as me I didn't get treated the way I did when I went in there with my black girlfriend!! it's a shame because I love the food and went there frequently but I won't tolerate hate from anyone or any establishment that I spend my money on. Beware if you are a BiRacial couple because you will be mistreated all on the basis of that it's sad it's 2025 and we live in Washington state this isn't acceptable and I'm sure the owner doesn't know this happens when she isn't there because when I met her one of the times I ate there she was a very nice woman, great conversation and seems like a loving person. I couldn't wait for this place to open. We love soul food. My husband and his sisters may have spoiled our family with their cooking because to me it's the best! I'm used to the full on flavor and seasonings. So we stopped by today to try this place out. We left spending, I'll round it off to $50. Now usually when we spend $50 (for 3) at a restaurant we leave full. This didn't do it for us. It lacked seasonings and definitely lacked in portions. You do the math. From the moment I walked in I noticed a brightly lit space and friendly staff who made a point to greet everyone that walked in. Menu is simple which I like. Specialize in a few things instead of trying to cover everything under sun. Ordered a 2 and 2 main and side combo which fed 2 adults and a child enough food to cover lunch. Fish was excellent. Chicken was decent. Sides of greens and cabbage were excellent. Food was piping hot. Could easily have gotten this to go taken it home and had hot food there. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that I feel they need to add to the place a little bit. $2 for a soda or bottle of water just seems a bit much. Get a sofa fountain setup. There was plenty of space. Seating was also very basic but clean. While there were clean bathrooms for use I would have appreciated some wet wipes for the greasy food as well. Alright! I been wanting to try this place since it came on my Insta feed. My family enjoyed the food. We got 1 main friend chicken 2 sides, mac and cheese and green beans, all was yummy! Also, 1 main fried shrimp and 2 sides collard greens and cabbage. Again all very yum. The shrimp taste exactly like I was picturing. My kids are very picky and they ate the chicken, mac and cheese and green beans. That says a lot!!! We paid 39.60 I hear a lot of people commenting on the price. I would say it's worth it for a family Friday night dinner. We made rice to complete the meal at home. I hope Nana's stays around so we can add it to our monthly family dinner night. Looking for some Southern food this Friday (yesterday) evening while in a COVID-19 epidemic, I was pleasantly surprised. All of the food was very good, flavor and quality wise are very high and it is apparent that the cooks no exactly what they are doing-which is a huge plus. Getting the food to go I was a little disappointed that it came lukewarm at best, perhaps maybe a better insulation compartment for take-out? I'm unsure how this can be achieved though putting it in the microwave warmed it back up to the chorus of delight coming from my tastebuds. Another, now I do not know if this is a staple in southern cooking and if it is I apologize, noticed that in some of the food was very salty almost to the point where it was difficult to eat, having the Louisiana sauce helped quell this though. I was pleased with the green beans, as that mixture of sweet dances with the onion was quite enjoyable for me. Cornbread was fabulous and having catfish for the first time was impressed by how flaky and soft the fish and breading were, both complimented each other perfectly. Overall, the food was very good, and is somewhere that my family and I will be coming back to in the future to sample more of their southern delicacies. Kent's own little southern gem! Nana's is everything and then some. I've been waiting patiently for them to open since I saw the sign come up. Now we're there once every other week if not more. It's a family business, so everyone is in there working and putting lots of love into each dish and it shows. The portions are very filling. The menu is simple and straight to the point It's not the biggest menu but they do an excellent job of making their entree's and sides delicious and full of flavor! The interior is simple and clean, photos of Nana and the family, a few tables and chairs if you'd like to dine in or order to go, as I usually do. The service is also very fast. Regardless of how busy they are, I never wait longer than 10-15 mins for my meals, which are fried fresh upon ordering. I used to drive to Tacoma or Seattle to get some good southern cooking when the craving hits, but now I don't have to go that far at all. read more

If you like great home cooking this is the place. If you like your cooking with a southern touch then this is a must try. The staff are welcoming and friendly and love cooking for you. My only wish is that I could have dined in so I could tell them in person how much I enjoyed the meal. I tried the chicken and catfish as a combo with sides of mac-n-cheese and candied yams. Here are my thoughts: Chicken - high quality meat and plenty of it these whole wings. The skin was deliciously seasoned and perfectly crispy. Each piece was consistent and excellent. Ezell's is across the street and this chick puts them to shame:) Catfish - A very meaty fillet was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. It was probably the best catfish I can remember having in.... well ever. Their custom tartar sauce was really good but honestly the fish was so good I didn't really use much. Mac-n-cheese - True homemade mac-n-cheese is an art form to make sure the pasta is cheesy. This is a home run. The side portions are huge. My only critique it the "to go" container doesn't keep it warm enough but you can always heat it up a bit. Maybe a insulated container. Candied Yams - So desert as a side? Yell yeah. These were absolutely fabulous. Without a doubt my favorite side of all time done excellently. Super tasty with the right amount of cinnamon. I will have a hard time not making these a regular as I want to try the other sides:) Corn Bread - The corn bread has a good hint of sweetness but not overly so. It wasn't too dry but not moist either. It was good just not the highlight of the meal. SO I here they are opening a new spot in Covington too. Luck folks over there. This is a great family owned restaurant that hits all the start. Service, clean place, excellent food. I will make this a regular stop when I am in the area. The food is ok but not worth the price. The potato salad is sweetto which I'm not used to having sweet. The candied yams is literally candy and should be marketed as too much sugar yams. The price for 4 wings and two sides are $22 dollars. Granted there is no French fries or drink as add on to fill you up. You're better off getting a bucket of better chicken at Jollibees. I was surprised to find catfish nuggets, I expected filets so I was disappointed when we received NUGGETS! It didn't say nuggets on the menu. Some of The nuggets were hard as bullets.
