First let me say the service was top tier. Love a good family owned business and love supporting local. We order the catfish with grits and eggs. Fried chicken with red beans and rice. Fried okra Strawberry lemonade and sweet tea. Everything was fried to perfection fish and chicken were crispy and juicy! Red Beans perfectly cooked! (Hate watery beans) And it looked beautiful. I mean check my pics. My only gripe and the only reason i did not give 5 stars .... the food was not seasoned. Not a spec of salt or spice. No pepper, no garlic powder, no onion powder, no cayenne. We were very confused lol I'm hoping it was a fluke because everything about this place is great . Especially the people who run it. Service was fast and attentive. The lady was really sweet to my grandbaby. She let my grand daughter keep a menu to play with while we waited. I included the photos of what everyone got. I was born and raised in Georgia so maybe that's why the taste is so bland. The meatloaf just tasted burnt and like they dumped half the container of pepper in it. The Mac N cheese was decent. They do give generous portion sizes. My son's shrimp Po boy was decent. The lettuse was not limp or wilted. My daughter's bidcuits and gravy looked flavorful but I've had jar gravy that had more flavor. The biscuits were moist. The hash brown were not crispy at all just soggy. I sent the meatloaf back requesting that it be removed from my bill. I took one small fork full to taste it. My daughters captain platter has a burnt flavor as well according to her. I did not try hers. If you want food that is bursting with flavor like true southern food, go somewhere else. Small space but cute. Dress warm. It's cold, but the food will heat you up quickly. They seemed understaffed but the servers who were there were friendly and helpful. Collard greens are deliciously peppery and buttery. Mac n cheese has cheese pull for days. More cheese than pasta for sure! Red beans and rice were perfection, creamy and flavorful. Not super happy with this visit, the reviews made its sound amazing but we were sorely unimpressed. We came in and immediately noticed it was kind of beaten down, cracked windows and bugs and dirt in the windows seals that were right by your face. The lady brought waters for us but nothing for our son and didn't ask if he needed a booster seat or something to draw on. The food seemed to take a while even though the restaurant really wasn't that full. The pancakes for my son were pretty good but the chicken wings that came with the waffles barely had any meat on them and it was flaking all over the place making it unpleasant to eat. After we received our food we weren't checked in at all and after the waitress noticed I didn't eat my food she didn't care to ask if there was anything wrong with it. Over all the pancakes and eggs Benedict were good. But we won't be returning here. read more

I never do reviews and put down small businesses but this restaurant is the worst. Chicken wings still had feathers on them. Catfish wasn't seasoned at all and shrimp batter was like plain cornmeal. We saw this diner featured on a TV show and made a point to give it a try and we were pleasantly surprised. We walked in the door and greeted with a smile and brought to our table. The menu had a very wide selection of traditional breakfast fare but also had lots of selections to bring New Orleans a little closer - Po Boy sandwiches, catfish, gumbo. But we had breakfast on our minds and went with the country fried steak and the chicken strips & Belgian waffle. Both entrees were huge! We could only eat half and enjoyed the leftovers the next morning. The place was clean, and decorated in a really nice kitchen utensil theme and the service was excellent. We tried out the new Southern Diner on 1st Ave last night, and it was an amazing experience. The diner occupies half of the building that used to be the Dragon Pearl. The interior is now bright and clean and inviting. The hostess/server, Andrea, was incredibly warm and friendly. Most importantly, the food was the best Southern cooking I have had on the west coast in the past 20 years. We had fried green tomatoes, a brisket sandwich, catfish with mashed potatoes and fried okra and a thick slice of cornbread. The cornmeal crust on the tomatoes and catfish was perfectly cooked: evenly coated, crunchy and not too salty. The okra was made from fresh, cut thick and perfectly cooked in a light crispy batter. The mashed potatoes were simply the best I've ever been served in any restaurant, anywhere, and the white cream gravy was perfection. The brisket was tender and the sandwich itself was enormous. Even the cornbread was incredible, dense and sweet and practically melting in your mouth. Southern Diner has only recently opened and has limited hours for now: 5 to 10 pm, Thursday through Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Although they're only open during dinner hours for now, they serve breakfast as well, and I can't wait to go back and try it!Curiously, when we arrived, the parking lot was almost full. We almost drove away, worried about dining in a crowded space, but decided to hop out and check to see if it felt safe or not. It turns out that the restaurant was empty, we were the first patrons of the evening. I'm so glad we decided to give it a try.
