This place is the real deal! The owner flys in all his ingredients from New Orleans so its super authentic. Straight from the south! Everything is so good, the owner and the servers are so nice and accommodating. Hampton the owner makes everything from scratch and every recipe is past down from this family recipes! Food is good BUT this place can't seem to keep a bartender. Or have one that knows how to make drinks. I was in on Friday night with my boyfriend and the new bartender didn't know how to make either of the drinks that we ordered. We ordered 2 drinks, had an order of jalapeño hush puppies and our bill was $50.12 because they charge a 20% service fee. YIKES read more

I've been missing fried gator for ages, and decided to randomly do a Google search to see if there was any place locally that had it. Lo and behold, there is a place, and by golly gee willikers the mofo is in my backyard! AND ITS GLORIOUS! Went here with a friend (after some convincing and begging) and we sat on the comfy couch for maybe 30 seconds before we were greeted by the loveliest waitress, Jane. It happened to be her first day, but she was so pleasant and eager to tell us how wonderful the food is there (she said it's so good she just had to work there a few days a week) etc. I already knew what I wanted - my long-awaited fried gator, but also I saw pics of the Etouffee on Yelp and thought why not. A hidden gem in Des Moines, I really enjoyed the food and friendly customer service. When your son isn't a shrimp fan, but gobbles up your shrimp po boy. You know they're doing everything right here. We got the Shrimp Poboy, the Etoufee, and Banana Pudding. The sandwich was tangy and savory from the sauce and pickles which soaked into the bread nicely. At first I thought the bread was dry, but if you think about it the sauce wouldn't soak as well. It was my first time trying etoufee and I'm such a fan. Originally, I wanted to try the jambalaya, but that's only served on Thursdays. I'm glad we tried the etoufee out. Every bite of the creamy stew had a nice chunk of crawfish. Lastly, you can never go wrong with banana pudding. Although, they aren't a kid-friendly restaurant. For families, it's worth ordering to-go and eating by the marina. You won't regret it. read more

I have been looking forward to try this place out. A lot of talk and even a news article. The location makes it a little hard especially with the theater construction. I like the inside very much, looks very good. They have a happy hour menu which tried out. The waffle fries had little or no seasoning on them and were not very warm, they did come with a very good dipping sauce. The deep fried made shrooms were alright, but not stuffed. We also tried that nights special, crawfish and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese and a nice kick to it but the crawfish was a little on the chewy side. What a great little gem in Des Moines. Dropped in on Friday night for dinner and drinks. Enjoyed the Friday special of Po Boys, shrimp and grits and the vegan stew. So delicious. I'm always on the lookout for good local food options, and this one popped up and had my interest. Grabbed takeout for the family and service was reasonably quick and very polite. There was a mistake and part of my order was missing so I had to run back and they were apologetic and had it ready for me pretty much the moment I walked in the door. As for the food, they make a mean fried catfish. The breading was light, the fish was clearly fresh and melted in my mouth, and for $13 the portion on the basket was plenty fair. I was craving a Po Boy and grabbed one, but was a bit disappointed. The flavors were all good, but the poor bread was no match for the ingredients and fell apart quickly. The jalapeno hushpuppies hit the spot, and the banana pudding was super rich and exactly what I expected when I ordered it. Overall it immediately rises to one of the top places to grab a meal in Des Moines and I would love to come back with just my partner for happy hour and try a cocktail (or two..). read more

Saw a sign on the side of the building and stopped in. Tucked around back In the alley is Creole Soul. Friendly staff and delicious food and drinks were what we experienced in the cozy interior. There is plenty of picnic table seating outside, also.. We ordered a couple of the specialty cocktails, seafood basket and a catfish basket. Being from the Midwest, finding good catfish is hard here in the PNW. Their catfish was breaded in cornmeal, seasoned well and cooked just right. They had a variety of sauces to try from tartar to spicy each to hot sauce. We will be back! read more

This place was a HUGE letdown!! The food lacked any flavor. The grits were bland, the red beans were runny, and had cut pieces of hot dogs in them. Beans were served without rice. And the service was mediocre at best. The woman who I believe is the owner's fiance, was extremely rude to my friend when she was unhappy with her shrimp and grits. The place was very unwelcoming to us, a group of Black professionals, stopping by after work. And lastly, I got so sick within an hour of eating their food! All around an awful experience. read more
