This is one of the only places I would have gone for Valentine's Day during covid. I knew that they would have the necessary precautions in place, but also that their seating arrangement was spread out even before the pandemic. They had plastic dividers between the seating at the counter and hand sanitizer was required upon entry. Reservations are highly recommended. The food was excellent as usual. I posted a video of the main dish, I forgot what was called. Service was good as usual. We had a couple of different people serve us food, but we had a really talkative server. She was extremely entertaining, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Still a 5 star rating. Looking forward to my next meal at Nanzan Giro Giro. read more

A super great friend made reservations for us to go to Nanzan GiroGiro and although I love Japanese food, I usually don't like Kaiseki because you don't get to choose what you want to eat. It was my first time here and I was very pleased when I sat down and saw the menu. Made many of my favorite dishes were on the menu. The majority of the seating area is around a central kitchen preparation area so you can see the chefs preparing everything and it is served immediately. Service was excellent. The food was also fantastic with beautiful presentation. The portion size was also perfect with not having too large or too small portions because it was a multi-course meal. Dessert is optional. The two of us shared one dessert and it was perfect. Nanzan GiroGiro has an excellent sake menu. Parking is limited and around the building. We love coming here because of the great service (truly, people who work here are truly nice people) and amazing food. We came here on my husbands birthday and we had a great dinner. This place has been open for more than ten years and although I drive by it plenty of times, for some reason, I always thought it was an exclusive place to eat because of it's intimate setting. Anyhow, the mister and I chose this place for date night as we're always wanting to try new places. When making the reso, we were asked if we have any allergies. Our reso was for 5:30pm on a Friday night (3/5/21) and although we thought we would be able to find parking, we ended having to drive around the block several times before my bf called them to ask if a certain spot was park-able (Kakaako is notorious for tow jobs, sometimes, when you're not in a tow away zone). In the end, we were guided to park right in front of the side entrance, thank goodness! When we were seated, the waiter asked us again if we had any food allergies but also, if there is any type of food item that we dislike. We really appreciated this although we didn't have any. Their menu changes every month and their food is prepared on these pretty ceramic dishes that have a little person hanging on the rim of most dishes (as to keep you company while you're eating lol, that's what one of the workers explained to us). We thought it was a mixture of a panda and a sloth but it actually has a name but I forgot lol! I thought it was the cutest thing! After dinner and two bottles of Hakkaisan sake later, we made friends with most of the workers. Shout out to Rusty, Suzi, Danial san, Victor and another man (sorry I forgot your name mister) for making our date night so fun! Nanzan is the name of a Japanese ceramist that created all of the dishes that are used to plate their dishes. They sell them too but most will take about 2 months to arrive here from Tokyo. I was able to score (buy) a cute little sake cup. Wasn't able to buy a set because a lot of people buy them and they are low on sake cup inventory. Overall, the service was great, food was good (our favorite dishes were the duck soup and foi gras spring roll! I could eat those two dishes all night! Kaiseki in an assembly line? Really, that's how I felt. The restaurant is in a semi-industrial area. The seating were set for 30 minute reservation slots. And the chef and crew move in the assembly line fashion. They got the operation down to the tee and perfection. My husband and I came here for our anniversary dinner and it was definitely the perfect choice. The atmosphere was nice, we got to enjoy and watch as our meal was prepared. $58 for a 7-course kaiseki and $8 additional for dessert. Here was the line up for the December menu: 1) Uni and ahi over egg tofu 2) Snapper and monkfish liver soup 3) Saba with spinach 4) Foie gras and water chesenut tempura 5) Short rib with egg plant 6) Black code miso soup 7) Cabbage tsukemono 8) Dessert - cinnamon macaroon, strawberry ice and sweet potato cake The only complaint that I got was that our seventh course was just a pinch of cabbage tsukemono, which I totally missed and didn't know it was our last course. However, I enjoyed every single dish as to its taste and presentation. The staffs were also well mannered and knowledgeable. My husband said that since they change their menu every month, we are limited to just coming here 12X a year, but I told him that according to Yelp check-ins, some people dine here over 40x already. When my foodie friend Cathy said she wanted to try Nanzan Giro Giro, I immediately thought, could I, would I ... enjoy a set menu that might include all the things I don't eat -- meat, raw fish, shellfish and pork? As it turns out, the staff at this elegant kaiseki restaurant were very accommodating after I explained my dilemma, so rest assured that you can have it your way even at this fine dining establishment which changes its menu monthly. For starters, the first of our six-course menu was a chawan mushi unlike any I've ever tasted. Where one expects a savory yellow custard, the version here shined a bright green hue from pureed tatsoi. The delicate leaf is similar to arugula but without the bitter peppery taste, so all you enjoy is a clean grassy flavor. Hidden at the bottom of the pretty cup were pieces of cooked ahi (raw ahi for my more adventurous friends Fran C. and Cathy) and possibly some beans -- maybe ginko nuts? Hmm... I have no idea what I ate, but together in this preparation, a perfect marriage of textures and tastes. Throughout the courses, when meat, duck or pate would have been served, it was replaced for me with a cooked piece of fish -- mackerel or ahi -- that was excellently prepared; moist and flaky, whether in a soup, on top of sushi rice, embedded in a curry-like broth or part of an ochazuke final course. They say you eat with your eyes first, and here the tiny portions are served on beautiful ceramic dishes that are a visual feast. Perhaps that is why I did feel full after the third course, but I pressed on to order that extra course -- dessert; three tiny but delicious morsels. It was so cute, almost like doll food, that I almost didn't want to eat it. But I did. Sorry, Fran C., next time I'll leave some for you! Service was almost too friendly ... the kind where they ask you every 5 minutes if you need tea or water or something. We thought the staff were politely trying to kick us out of the restaurant as we must have sat there for 3 hours, comfortable in the soft cushiony sofa seating away from the open-kitchen. Only small kine glitch was the strangely fishy smelling water cups. Tea is free, as is parking along the makai side of the building. That's nice since kaiseki is pricey, yet well worth it to spend time with dear friends and celebrate a special occasion. read more

We were happy with our experience and Nanzan Giro Giro 3 years ago, and this time around it was even better. We made reservations for 2 for 6pm on Saturday night (right when they opened) and were seated directly in front of the chef (which is the best seat, because you see everything being prepared). When we arrived there were only two other people there, but it quickly filled up, so it pays to get there a little early. Reservations are recommended. The food is thoughtfully prepared and comes in beautiful ceramic dishes. The chef is genuinely kind. The service is attentive and informative. The price of the experience is such an incredible value. There is non bar/table seating, and the chef said that if you wanted to bring kids, that's a good area to be. I would still say that you'd want to take older adventurous kids. Though he said himself, that kids can eat there, so don't miss this experience just because you think children wouldn't be a good fit. In that case just get there early :) read more

From a bit of zucchini or radish to an oyster or mint leaf, dinner is a playful journey through Chef Matsumoto's seasonal monthly menu. Great attention to detail is given to the presentation, flavors, and textures of each dish, creating art for all your senses. My suggestion is to check out the menu before you make your reservation to see if it's what you're hungry for. The menu typically features multiple types of fish, another seafood such as uni or shrimp, a red meat like beef, a poultry like duck, and foie gras, eggs, mushrooms, vegetables, rice or noodles. Depending on the season (Japan's not Hawaii's) the preparations will change. When I visited in May the menu had lighter raw and chilled items, while the November menu had 3 courses with hot soup. If it's your first time, here are some tips: Parties of 1-4 are best to sit at the counter surrounding the kitchen and watch the staff. Larger groups can be accommodated in a private area away from the kitchen. The courses are made for everyone in your reservation time slot at the same time, so whether you've finished with the last course or not, the next one will be presented when it's ready. Like any restaurant where the food is being cooked in front of you, expect to leave smelling like oil and smoke. And between the meal pacing, the liquid, and the changes in flavor you will feel full, but those with a bigger appetite might need to eat again in a few hours. This beautiful meal comes with a hefty price tag: $73 ($58 plus tax and tip) for 6 3-bite Kaiseki Courses, plus another $10 ($8 plus tax and tip) for the 3-bite Dessert and Tea. Going to Nanzan Giro Giro was an all time 1st for me.........this dining experience is called Kaiseki" dining (set menu). Part of the beauty of this dining experience is that you don't have to worry about choosing what you want to eat, as the chef will serve you what is on the menu for that particular month. Bear in mind, the menu changes every month.........I want to say that the waitress mentioned something like every third Thursday of the month, the menu changes. I wish I could share and repeat to you on what I ate, but unfortunately I don't remember, as the items served to us had multiple flavors. Hopefully my Yelp buddy Sharon will help me on this, when she writes her review about this place. Best thing to do is just check out the "pics", and you can see our 6 course meal items, & we also ordered a little dessert too. Each item that was served to us came in very small portions...........but surprisingly, after I had finished eating everything, I felt pretty full. Didn't need to run to Popeye's after this meal to get any fried chicken! Lol! Service was excellent! The staff was very accommodating to adjust their menu, as my buddy Sharon does not eat any raw fish. This is a wonderful dining experience! Warning... You have to be able to except what is made and presented to you if you dine here. They will acknowledge allergies but that's about all... You do have choice of beverages tho. If you looking to grind, this is not the place either. Soo if you're into culinary cuisine done in front of you and Japanese food... You'll love this place. The Chefs here design and perfect 1 menu each month to present their take on what's in season. Amazingly done and it's the end of those cooking shows that are on TV... You finally get to taste what they are making. I'm not able to tell you what was in our 6 course plus dessert dish BUT I can tell you it was all delicious! The presentation, to the service mannerisms and short speeches of every dish is like a hands on play you get to interact with the actors/actresses and play along with them. Pretty presentation but somehow the meal felt rushed and never flowed. Peanut butter on fried tofu is something probably cutting edge, but I am not a fan. Fried tofu and dashi would have been my preference. The courses had a lot going on, which competed with the flavors of the star ingredient. Creamy components generally do not have their place in this cuisine and would have been more balanced with no sauce or just a simple jus. Wine pairing is a steal at $25. Only the rose was a miss. Dessert is an additional $8, which comes with matcha. Macaron was too sweet. Brownie was ruined by the syrupy lemon glaze. My favorite was the ice cream. Not shareable. Sized like the FREE minardises at other tasting menus. I liked the casual open kitchen atmosphere. Really promotes interacting between the staff and strangers. The thing that made my experience with our friends worse, is that we called to make a reservation on a tuesday night, not even a friday or saturday night; When we get there, the table of 4 we reserved was actually a table for 3 (a double couch for our friends and then a small chair for me and my husband to share). I sat down for a bit bc the restaurant was packed, but this was not a table for 4. The area where me and my husband sat was 1/2 as big as the chair my 2 friends sat on. And when i brought this to the waiters attention, he said, sorry that is all we could do, as her gave me this look of "this b****, i dont wanna deal with this." I mean I could see if we just walked in and demanded a table, but we had made reservations and they wanted us to enjoy a high quality and high priced meal being totally uncomfortable. That was unreasonable in my mind. We were able to spend close to 500$, so after 10min of being uncomfortable and squeezing with my husband on a small sofa couch, I asked to speak to the manager who finally moved us. So Maybe this experience put a bad taste in my mouth before the food even got inside of it. What made me irritated even more is that they served a small bowl of "cha cha" rice with salmon eggs and the smallest bit of meat I had ever seen. I was a but disappointed in service that evening but it could be because they had air conditioning issues. When working in a hot atmosphere, it can throw you off. We were all perspiring so I can imagine then suffering. My reason for service issues were....I needed to request water throughout the night, in fact, they brought water for 3 of 4 on the table and none for me or the 2 kids. I requested napkins twice for the kids but did not receive any.... I had baby wipes in my bag so used those. I was really hot about going to Yohei for my birthday but I ultimately decided to try Nanzan Giro Giro which had been getting a lot of hype. It's a kaiseki place which bills itself as a "gallery restaurant." Fancy. There are only 2 seatings per night and about 20 seats in total. Plus they're closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These factors may make the restaurant seem pretty exclusive but I just think it's kind of a pain in the butt. But I decided to give it a go since it was only $50 per person for 7 courses. I was expecting a hole in the wall but the restaurant is totally high concept with an industrial design. All steel and glass with touches of matcha green. I thought it was pretty cool. Seemed like a place totally transported from New York. Added cool factor in its location: A super ghetto neighborhood, across from a dive-ish bar called Sports FanAddicts. We were seated after about a 2 minute wait. It's primarily bar seats and 2 large-ish group tables to the side - about 15 people around the kitchen pit slash bar. This even includes the dishwashing area where 2 lackeys tended 2 sinks constantly soaping and rinsing dishes. We sat across this area. It was pretty distracting to watch the soaping while eating some really delicate food. However, what was more distracting was sitting next to a woman doing FLASH photography of the food. What the hell. Anyway, food! First course was a Chawanmushi - egg, baby edamame, fried zucchini, and ikura. The custard was as smooth as silk and the ikura was a terrific complement. I could've done without the brick of zucchini. The edamame was ok, added a nice little crunch. Sanma - Grilled, mountain yam, bok choy. Just ok. The bok choy lacked flavor and not enough seasoning on the sanma. Chicken - Dashi broth, bok choy, daikon, ume puree. Very subtle broth bordering on a little boring. The chicken was great, it's how chicken should taste! Ume and daikon didn't really do anything taste-wise but was really pretty. Maguro - Cured maguro, kubocha puree, mushrooms, pickled edamame/sprouts? The maguro was very good. I liked the kubocha and pickles. The mushrooms were just kind of there. I can't tell you if the "curing" made a difference to the fish but it was tasty. Dassai 50 was recommended to me after some waffling by the waiters. I asked for a recommendation on a sake with a very subtle fruity undertone. The waiter seemed a bit befuddled then he asked another waiter and they both kind of shrugged. Hm. Ultimately he said the chef recommends Dassai 50. I have a feeling he just made it up! The sake was ok, too sweet for my taste. Tofu - Tempura sesame tofu, dashi broth, uni, pepper, eggplant, wasabi. The bar dude said this was their most popular dish. I thought it was good. The tofu was made out of sesame and I thought the texture was a little gummy. I think the problem was possibly the tempura sitting the broth for too long. The dashi broth was very nice. The uni was a neat addition. The best bite was to combine the tofu, uni, and wasabi. Duck - Smoked duck, sweet potato chip, chestnut mochi rice, amuse bouche of mushrooms and greens chilled. One of my favorite dishes. The duck and chestnut rice were fabulous together. Rice and broth - Opakapaka, wasabi, nori, maitake, sesame, tsukemono. One of my favorites. The broth was great. The fresh wasabi made a positive impact. Great dish on that rainy night. Panna cotta - Pumpkin mochi, persimmon nugget, kabocha macaroon, hot matcha. Dessert was an extra $8 but why the hell not right. One of my favorites of the evening. The dessert is supposed to be a spin on a famous Kyoto dessert. The mochi and panna cotta were great, along with the persimmon. The kabocha macaroon is the cutest and tastiest thing ever. Lovely with the contrast of the hot matcha. Overall, it was a fine meal. There was a nice progression of flavor, starting with a few barely seasoned things and arching forward starting with the maguro, then crescendo-ing at the duck, and finishing with the traditional rice and broth. SO FUN. This place was great. The servers all shout hello when you walk in, they are right in the middle of the room where you can watch them prep. Every single one came over to us throughout the night to either describe a dish or ask us something about ourselves. The main chef was right there in front of us, blow torching some bluefin tuna and telling us that in Japanese you would never call food "beautiful". The food was awesome. Every single dish was delicious and interesting. The tofu was particularly good and my husband and I went back and forth on whether the duck was the best or the soup was the best. We still can't choose! The price can't be beat for what you get. $60 for 6 courses and you walk away stuffed. We had a really nice sake out of adorable little cups. That was a great touch. 100% recommend. If it were in DC it would be hugely successful and we would go every month to try their new menu! read more

A very different experience, for sure. I went at around 7:30, and I didn't have any problems with parking. Very large glass windows around the restaurant gave it the modern feel, along with its exposed kitchen to complete the look. The staff had a very organized way of working, where one would switch from serving dishes to washing dishes, and so on. They were very attentive and detail-oriented. Our server explained the dishes in both English and Japanese. Great customer service. The food was very good. Their monthly changing menus is a unique touch. Well rounded dishes that compliment each other. Very fun place to try if you're looking for a little twist from your typical dinner. However, I was a little disappointed with the taste. The dashi they used was good. But, some were a little too sweet or a little too salty. The somen was overcooked. The combination of toppings and the main was too salty. Small things here and there were a bit too flavorful, losing the overall delicate taste you would find in exquisite kaiseki. Tl;dr: fun place to try. Modern kaiseki is interesting. read more
