    Hamachi Carpaccio, Uni Ikura Oyster

Was really excited to try this place since I've had it bookmarked for over a year. We arrived around 7:30 for our 7:45 reservation and were surprised to see only 3 parties inside. First off, the restaurant itself is super cute and really captures that cozy Japan izakaya vibe. The atmosphere honestly felt like a typical Hawaii izakaya, which made us even more excited for the meal. On the positive side, the staff were nice and all of the food came out super quickly. The prices were also fair. The lychee martini was good. Unfortunately, the food itself was pretty underwhelming. Most dishes lacked flavor and seasoning -- from the udon to the beef tongue, everything tasted bland and needed salt. We found ourselves adding shoyu to the udon just to give it some flavor. The fried items also need some work. The tempura enoki was oily, and the ika geso wasn't crispy enough. The highlights of the meal were definitely the hamachi carpaccio and the chicken green onion yakitori. On the other hand, the pork belly yakitori was chewy and made us question whether it was fully cooked. The fire roll was just okay. As the restaurant filled up, it also got really warm inside, so I definitely wouldn't recommend wearing long sleeve in the restaurant. Lastly, we also showed our Hawaii ID during our meal while ordering our drinks, but no Kama'aina discount was given, which we didn't know about until after we left. That was another disappointment, as most places here would have given the discount without us having to ask. Overall, I'm glad we finally tried this place because the ambiance and service was good, but it's probably not somewhere we'd return to.

While walking the streets of Waikiki aimlessly with only a taste for a good highball on my mind and a calling for yakitori from my belly Harumi Izakaya was a pleasant random discovery. The Japanese lantern lights and Nobori banners which adorn the front of the shop waved in the wind as if to say "hey Mike, we got what you need." Enter the pub and I was greeted immediately, "how many?" I replied, "just one, bar, please" I observed average group sizes of 4 to 6 people occupying tables on the way to my seat. Most looked local with a few appearing touristy. The japanese decorations continue throughout the entire pub which gives it a cozy authentic vibe. What did I order? A couple highballs, a chicken/green onion Yakitori, and an order of yellow tail nigiri. Everything I had was perfect and on point. Prices were fair and the water server kept the glass full. I dig this spot. It's so chill. Good for solo missions or for time with friends. Definitely the type of place you'll find me at whenever I'm in Waikīkī

Negituro (minced Turo) ikura lava bowl: 3/5 looked and amounted to nothing like what menu photo showed. Tastes like the sum of its parts. Yakitori (skewers): Unagi/eel: 3/5 Pork belly: 3/5 Beef: 3/5 Chicken green onion: 3.5/5 Fish didn't taste fresh. All skewers were mediocre. Food took a while to come out, too. Very kind service, but food wasn't for me. If they good give bigger portions for the price they charged then maybe 3.5/5. If there was more tare flavor and better beef quality, that would really elevate this place. Easy to walk to if you're in Waikiki. Loved the fun an casual decor.

Ten of us came here for dinner. They were able to give us 2 checks for the table. I had the salmon sashimi with ikura over rice. The sashimi was very very thinly sliced and did not even cover all the rice like in the menu photos. The chicken karaage appetizer was excellent. The pork belly donburi appetizer was very small but really good.

Came here expecting a solid izakaya experience but left pretty underwhelmed. The hamachi carpaccio had a noticeably fishy taste, which is never a good sign for something that's supposed to be fresh and clean. The meats also had a gamey flavor that just didn't sit right. Service was average, which didn't make up for the food either. Prices felt way too high for the quality you're getting, which made it disappointing. Only real highlight was the beer offered in pitchers, and the atmosphere, which was actually pretty good and easy to enjoy. Overall, not a place I'd go back to.

cozy late night spot y Super authentic izakaya vibes perfect for drinks + small plates with friends. The yakitori and sashimi were fresh, and everything just hit. Chill ambiance, good energy, and the kind of place you end up ordering way more than you planned perfect for a casual night out or lowkey date

Izakaya Harumi is a small izakaya in the middle of Waikiki. It is a cozy spot with loud music playing. We were quite surprised that there was no wait to get in. We ordered a wide variety of dishes, edamame, French fries, agedashi tofu, skewers with shishito peppers, zucchini, eggplant , beef, beef and pineapple , pork belly, pork jowl. Everything was pretty good. If you are looking for a place to eat that is not too overcrowded, this may be the place. The service is good and the food is pretty good.

Came here late night with the #boyz haha. Fun and energetic Izakaya. It's not Japanese owned or operated cause not one worker spoke japanese but it doesn't mean the food or service can't be good! Had a great time with my friends. Service was casual and friendly. Food is good for what it is. come here for the drinks and vibes, and some bites to share. Big big menu, so I would recommend looking at the menus before going in so you're not sitting there for 30mins looking FOB. Just come in, order, enjoy. That's what a solid 4 stars is. Nothing over the top, nothing short of good. Validated Parking at Hyatt Centric Bathrooms upstairs to the back, need key Phone call reservations/ Walk-ins Bring big group so you can order lots of different things to share. I would skip the Hamachi....

This cute little Izakaya across the old DFS on Royal Hawaiian has great kitschy Japanese ambiance with old newspapers, banners and flags decorating the walls and ceilings. The menu offers a variety of sushi, tempura, yakitori, and other side dishes. Came here at the recommendation of my cousin from Minnesota! Our favorites were the *grilled beef tongue that came with a delicious fried garlic topping, *chirashi, and *pork jowl. Beef tongue was so good we ordered another. Service friendly but brought us a chicken karaage by mistake and forgot to take it off the bill. Remember to check your bill and ask for kamaaina discount if you're local. Park at Hyatt Centric and they will validate. Next time we need to make it on time for happy hour!

Skewers are my fave and hubs wanted to check out Izakaya Harumi after looking at the pictures and reading the reviews. We made reservations for 7pm, which I would recommend as it is not a very big place and can be quite busy. I appreciated their Yakitori combos. We ordered both Combo 1 and 3 which comes with both miso soup and rice. We also ordered the fried oysters, ika karaage, chicken cartilage skewers, chicken karaage, and pork belly skewers. We were silly to think the combos woudn't be enough as we were quite stuffed. My faves were the chicken and green onion skewer, fried oysters, pork jowl and pork belly skewers. Hubs was a fan of the chicken cartilage and pork belly skewers. Service was friendly and they were attentive. Prices were reasonable. We'd return again.

    California Roll (to go)

Stopped in to grab a to go order, plenty of seating and staff seemed to quickly serve those walking in. Ordered the California Roll, which came with a lot of soy sauce and a small amount of wasabi. The menu looked good and there was a good flow of ppl coming and going. I will be back to try more of there dishes when I am not in a rush. Quoted me 10m, but I was out in a few minutes.

Pork belly , beef , and Chicken thigh + chicken katsu
    Brian N.

I was really craving good yakitori after smelling the charred meats while walking around and stumbled upon this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The Chicken Katsu was probably the most disappointing dish of the night. There wasn't much chicken, as it was very thinly sliced and felt like there was more batter than meat. It was super crispy, which was a plus, but the katsu sauce was too tangy for my taste. I've tried other katsu spots in the area, and this one lacked the right balance. For yakitori, we ordered beef, chicken thigh, and pork belly. They were pretty standard and decent, not overly charred. The only issue was the quality, some parts of the beef were mostly fat. The Crunchy Tempura Roll was fairly decent. It had a nice balance of flavors and rice ratio. However, parts of the roll were covered in more eel sauce than others, which made some bites overly sweet at times.

We stopped by Izakaya Harumi since we were craving some yakitori. The beef skewer stood out the most with a great medium, fatty cut that was flavorful and satisfying. The chicken thigh skewers could have used more char and seasoning, and the pork belly skewers were cut a bit thick and weren't as charred as we'd hoped. The chicken katsu was very crispy, which we liked, but the katsu sauce was a bit too tangy and slightly bitter for our taste. The shrimp tempura roll was solid: crunchy, fresh, and easy to enjoy. For drinks, the lychee martini was strong, which we appreciated, though the lychee flavor itself wasn't very concentrated. Service was friendly, though it took about 20 minutes for our food to come out which felt a little long given the portion sizes. Overall, a decent and cozy izakaya with a fun menu.

They have shared parking lot with the surrounding establishments which was fairly open since it was so late (I think they were the only one open by that time). We were able to get seated fairly quickly (bar seating style, not individual tables, although they have a few of those as well). This spot is decently small but they seem to fit everyone in fairly efficiently. Upon seating we were given menus and waters after. The waiters are decently attentive since we were seated right by their kitchen/back of house opening. We got: * Chicken Karaage: 10/10, I would heavily recommend this. The chicken was juicy and lightly crispy. What MADE this dish was actually the egg sauce on top. It acts as the aioli but clearly much more homemade and heathier, with egg white pieces and the sauce made of egg yolk etc. We ordered this twice bc it smacked. * Taco Rice: 7/10, okay so... I'm not even going to lie when I say that I was a bit tipsy already when I agreed on ordering this. I THOUGHT this was a TAKO (octopus) rice. NOT a TACO (Mexican) rice. It tasted like I was eating taco bell, which wasn't bad per se but just felt weird being in an izakaya. * Beef Tongue: 9/10. I would recommend this as well. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful. They didn't go overboard with the sauce on top to let the meat shine through. * Seared Aburi: 8/10. The person I was with order it. It was good, no strong feelings about it. It was cool to watch them sear it though. It was on the fishy-er side tho, compared to other forms of sashimi (likely due to the skin still present). * Hot Sake: I would recommend this if you don't enjoy drinking. While its hot/warm, it helps it go down a lot more! Honestly I enjoyed the fried chicken so much I would actually come back just to eat that and maybe try some of their other dishes. Plus the izakaya experience definitely felt really authentic as it was bustling when we visited.

The kitchen is clearly talented. But everything else? A real disappointment. The server was cold and unfriendly the entire visit. The larger tables of four around us were getting great, attentive service -- smiles, check-ins, the works. But when she dropped food at our table? Not even a word. It felt pretty obvious that since the bigger tables had an automatic 20% tip guaranteed, our table just wasn't worth the effort to her. And that's exactly the problem with sneaking an auto-gratuity in fine print at the bottom of the menu -- it creates exactly this kind of situation. If the service had been genuinely good, I would have happily tipped 20% on my own. But to have it quietly tacked on after being largely ignored? That feels sneaky and disrespectful. This place used to be a go-to for me. Today really dropped the ball. Be upfront about the tip policy and treat every table like it matters -- because to the customer, it always does.

Located on the ground floor of the Romer House hotel, which itself had been recently gutted and remodeled in recent years, along Nāhua Street, 855 Aloha proudly establishes itself as a restaurant that has its roots engrained with a sense of nostalgia from a time when things moved a little slower, even in Hawai'i where things have always moved a little slower, so diners can gather, stay a little longer, which upon my visit I happily did so. Named for Hawaii's once-ubiquitous payphone number, 855 Aloha is a celebration of local history and a bit of an homage to the humble payphone, where a handful of change could connect people back to the mainland. What brought me here was the fact that on a previous journey to the Hawaiian islands, I stayed at the Romer House and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but never got around to visiting their main restaurant on the ground floor lobby. Upon a recent visit to Waikīkī, with the rain coming down in droves, I made it my mission to finally make it one of Waikīkī's most intriguing restaurants. Not having reservations for 855 Aloha was not a problem, as I made sure to call in advance and they said they were taking walk-ins this evening. Being sat in one of their large booths made me appreciate solo dining, and take in the ambiance of a dimly lit dining room. Beyond the cocktail and beverage section of the menu, the dinner menu at 855 Aloha is separated into categories including Sushi Rolls, otherwise known as Roll Call; Salads, otherwise known as Fresh Talk; Shareable Pupus and Appetizers, otherwise known as Party Line; Large Plates, otherwise known as Main Line; Sides, otherwise known as What's Your Extension; and Desserts, otherwise known as Sweet Talk. To start my meal I ordered their Hello Goodbye cocktail which featured Tequila Blanco, Mezcal, Housemade Ginger Syrup, Honey and Lemon. A sultry cocktail that was deep in texture and flavor, this was a nice start to my meal. To eat with my cocktail, I ordered their Cali Roll which was filled with Snow Crab, Avocado, Cucumber and Sesame. This was your traditional sushi roll elevated in an only-in-Hawaii sense of mind. Since I was famished for food, I knew I wanted something hearty, and their Chinatown Chili Crisp Chicken which was served with Gai Lan vegetables, as well as Charred Lemon, and topped with Cilantro. To pair with my entrée, I ordered their Furikake Rice. As I sipped on my cocktail I enjoyed my Cali Roll piece by piece and knew that the food at 855 Aloha was truly elevated and I knew for the rest of my evening I was in for a real treat. My chicken entrée and bowl of steamed rice topped with furikake seaweed and sesame seeds would come out next and I would not be disappointed as it was juicy and flavorful with every bite. The chicken entrée was not the largest dish so sharing this one entrée seems doubtful the side of steamed rice definitely fills up any diner. I didn't think I had any room for dessert but changed my mind when I reviewed their menu, and their Chocolate Haupia Pie topped with Toasted Coconut and Whipped Cream was simply too good to ignore. My total bill for this visit to 855 Aloha was $90.06 that included tax and was before grtuity was added in, which was higher than most, but well worth the price tag. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to 855 Aloha, as it represented the true diverse cultures of Hawaii, thanks to the energy and kindness of the Japanese hospitality that this restaurant represents. Seeing my fellow diners, both large parties and couples enjoy themselves, in such a place where people were clearly bonding over their meal and drinks in such a laid back yet still dynamic social environment was a real treat. "I got it, I got it, I got it...for a good time, for a good time call...855 Aloha!

As it was my first night in Hawaii and we didn't have dinner yet, sure why not try it? While waiting to be seated, I had asked the staff at 855 Aloha if the 15% discount would apply for guests at the hotel, and quite oddly, she said she didn't know. Upon being seated, I asked our server and strangely, she also didn't know and said she would ask someone. Sort of made me confused and gaslighted that I'm being told two different things. As it's our first time dining at 855 Ahola, we tried a few entrees and I would say that it's flavorful and delicious; much better than I would have expected. $12 for sparkling water, a little pricier but the food was good. I did enjoy my late meal / dinner. My only complaint would be that when the bill arrived, no discount was applied. I had told three servers that I was a guest at the hotel, had my key card and ID as well. The server came back and she applied 10% off. At that point, I just paid for the bill and left a 20% tip for gratuity. Being in Hawaii, especially after a long flight and it being our first meal which happens to be very late and it's dinner, would have liked for the hotel to have just honored the 15% discount without having to ask about it so many times. 15% discount won't break my wallet but it's more about the principle and fairness -- it is actually listed on the website as well. It made me feel like 855 Aloha wasn't very honest. The food itself was good but I would probably just skip this one next time.

Bozu is a local Japanese restaurant where all the locals seem to go. It's located in an unassuming…read morestrip mall (reminds me of LA's Koreatown) and we were able to walk there from Waikiki. We ordered a bit too much food and spent a little under $200 for two people after tax and tip. Some dishes we ordered: 1. Spicy tuna and salmon with garlic roll ($26.50) - massive roll and quite heavy...this was the last dish to come out and we were STUFFED by then. It's good, but I would have preferred to start the meal with this roll, not end with it. 2. Atsuage natto ($9.50) - ordered to hit my protein macros. It's literally fried tofu topped with a generous serving of natto. 3. Eggplant in dashi sauce ($6.50) - light appetizer, and seemed fairly healthy. 4. Miso chilean sea bass ($30) - very flaky and fresh. I was already getting full by this point after our apps and nigiri came out. 5. The nigiri and rolls were all fresh and ranged in pricing. We each got 3 pieces of nigiri and split a couple small rolls in addition to the aforementioned spicy tuna and salmon. Service was decent. We sat at the counter and the chefs were all very nice.

Best service, even when we showed up right before last call. Thank you!…read more Most places don't look too happy when you walk in right before last call. We are always looking for a quick night cap after UH games and Bozu has both good drinks and quality sushi and sashimi.
