Wow, I am bummed that I waited so long to come to NAR. I was talking to a Turkish friend at work awhile back and he recommended I try this place as we were discussing Turkish restaurants. I added to my list but didn't try it until this week and I was blown away! The restaurant is lovely and has a great vibe (although it is a little loud due to the low ceilings). Service was great reflecting exceptional Turkish hospitality. My friends and I started with small mezzes (all delicious) and zucchini blossoms, which I could have had as a standalone meal. I had the Turkish delight meat dish and that was super. My husband had the beyti and it was the best I've ever had. We all ate way too much and waddled out of there way too full. Prices are about what you'd expect in that part of town and it's worth every penny. I will definitely be back. I've gotten a decent amount of Turkish food delivered throughout my tenure here in New York, but I haven't been to many Turkish restaurants! Super glad I got to try out NAR and I hope it does well, because the food is straight up amazing. I started off with a glass of the Cotes d'Avanos Narince Blend from Turkey and I highly recommend! It's medium bodied and acidic, with mineral, stone fruit, and citrus, and would go really well with seafood. For food, we began with the mezze sampler, which included babaganoush, muhammara, and hummus. This is a great way to start the meal, especially since Nar serves a delicious bread (crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside) as a complementary starter. My favorites were the muhammara, an intense, piquant spread made with roasted red peppers and pomegranate molasses, and the ever-smoky babaganoush, which was served with pomegranates. The hummus was great, too; I just thought it wasn't a standout. -Aegean Style Cherry Vine Leaf Sarma (stuffed vine leaves, cherry yogurt, pine nuts, currants): Delicious. The savory, salty sarma are tasty on their own, but best when lightly sweetened with the cherry yogurt and tart, juicy currants. -Beyti Kebab (hand minced lamb wrapped in lavash, yogurt, confit tomatoes): This was the most flavorful lamb - juicy, smoky, perfectly spiced - I've had in a long time. The lavash (bread) that it was rolled in was also spiced, the yogurt was cooling, and the tomatoes and bell peppers a fresh and flavorful accompaniment. We finished off the meal with ice cream and Turkish coffee. The coffee took a while, so they took it off of our bill, which was a kind gesture. The ice cream was a different experience! It was made with goat milk, so the flavor was distinct, and it was extremely thick. High-quality and fun to try, but just a little too thick for my preferences. read more

They had a great offer- $99 for all the food we had, plus two drinks and a desert. It's a rather small restaurant but intimate and such cozy vibes. The best Turkish restaurant in NYC. Went with my cousin and her boyfriend who lived in Istanbul for a year and we all agreed the food was delicious on a recent Sunday evening visit. We shared a hummus/babaghanoush appetizer, Shepherd salad, rice and I ordered the Nar Kebab. Everything was delicious and portion sizes were good. A nice interior matched with tasty flavour profiles. The service felt a bit slow; I only saw one duo when I ate a late solo lunch. The vents above the couch seats were occasionally leaking (maybe from the rain?). Despite the mentioned negatives, the food more than made up for it. The bread starter had a bit of a chew, but was overall light and slightly crispy. I wished it came with something, like butter or some dip. However, it spectacularly went well with the Shakshuka. The cold appetizer packed a strong punch with its tomato sauce, seasoned veggies, cubed potatoes, and garlic yogurt. The Mediterranean Chicken was cooked well and absolutely moist. The carrots were a small but a pleasant, slightly sweet addition. Overall, there is room for improvement outside of the dishes themselves. But the food made the visit worthwhile. read more

Modern vibe, comfy seating, and we kicked things off with addictive sesame bread and olive oil (on the house). Out and about for Restaurant Week: we settled in for an early-ish dinner at Nar, an upscale Turkish restaurant near Madison Square Park. The menu covers off a number of traditional dishes (kababs, manti, lamb chops, fish) with some creative touches. We both ordered from the Restaurant Week pre-fixe menu, with an appetizer, entree, and baklava each. To start: zucchini blossoms and eggplant + red pepper dolma. The zucchini blossoms (fried squash blossoms + kashkaval cheese + potato atop a smoked paprika aioli) were crisp and tasty, if on the greasy side. The dolma (eggplant and pepper wrapped around a rice + pine nut filling with yogurt on the side) were much bigger than expected, making it messy to eat but a nice combination of flavours. The complimentary bread and olive oil (olive oil with a few small olives in the dish) were a almost too good to stop eating For the entrees: she ordered the one vegetarian option, a lion's mane risotto (seared lion's mane + oyster + shiitake mushrooms in a barley based risotto with kashkaval cheese). It was a pleasant mix of chewy, creamy, and meaty textures without feeling too rich or heavy. I went with the Nar kabab: a charred minced lamb + pistachio kebab on top of flatbread with a garlic yogurt + charred tomatoes and peppers on the side. The kebab was excellent on its own, and even better when made into a handheld wrap with the yogurt and bread. The whole branzino here is absolutely worth it - flaky fish with a bright, lemony caper sauce and a generous amount of olive oil. Chicken kebab was surprisingly tender and juicy, not the dry disaster I usually expect from kebabs. We shared the babaganoush (perfectly smoky and creamy), solid starter and of course we asked for more bread! Service was efficient and friendly, though fair warning - the lighting inside is pretty dim, so maybe save this for when you're not trying to Instagram your food. Overall, NAR delivers on flavor without being pretentious about it. The kind of neighborhood spot where you can get a proper Mediterranean meal without the fuss. Was looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate my brothers 50th birthday that not only met our aesthetic requirements but had exquisite and tasteful meals. Not only did NAR surpass our expectations, but topped it off with good portions. Our server, Elvan, was a delight to have as she handled our group (of 10) like a true professional. Nar is a cool Turkish restaurant located on a busy block of restaurants. I kind of like the fact that it doesn't stand out among the other great spots on the block. Also: It doesn't seem that hard to get a reservation here, which surprised me. We shared several items in the appetizer section: the shakshuka, sundried eggplant and pepper dolma, beetroot salad, and stuffed wine leaves. All were really great, though the sundried eggplant and pepper dolma was so fantastic that we ordered a second one. Shakshuka was also interesting - but certainly not your standard warm "breakfast" shakshuka with tomato sauce, eggs, etc. (This felt more like a ratatouille.) Went for my friend's birthday last night . This is a really pretty restaurant with blue seating and a hip jazzy soundtrack. We started off with a couple cocktails, the Nature's UFO which is a serious bourbon drink. And the Forbidden Ember mezcal and pineapple drink which was spicy but good . For appetizers we got the Grilled Octopus which was tasty with a tangy sauce too but my friend thought the portion was on the small side . But I loved my app . I had the Cherry Vine Leaf Dolma which is rice and pine nuts and currants wrapped in vine leaves with a cherry sauce and yogurt. A nice chew to it and really unusual favor. Get that if you want to sample a Turkish dish . They also bring you some crispy and complimentary bread with olive oil that we ate all of , twice ! For mains I got the Branzino with burnt rice. The rice had a great flavor and so did the fish which melted right into your mouth - really silky and great flavor - but keep in mind that this is a whole fish and there are some little bones. So be careful. My friend had the Mediterranean Chicken with grilled vegetables. He described it as a lively flavor because it was coated with spices a bit like Jerk chicken is. And it was juicy. For dessert we had baklava which was a pie like slice with an unusual ice cream that may have had mastic in it. A good ending though i wish their dessert menu was bigger . Staff were very nice . Even though we had reservations, the place was not overly packed on a Friday night, which I appreciate. There is also seating available at the bar. I came to Nar with my partner and his mom for dinner on a Friday night. Neither of us had ever been here before but I was drawn by the positive reviews online as well as their fantastic NYC Restaurant Week menu so I knew I had to come check it out. The restaurant has a very nice, cozy, and intimate feel to it while having lively energy. It was full of people throughout the night so the volume levels got a tiny bit high towards the end but it was perfect for a Friday evening. Service was exceptional. Our waitresses was incredibly kind and very attentive of our table throughout our meal. I also appreciated how we did not feel rushed out of the restaurant and we were just having a good time. We ordered a bottle of this Turkish Chardonnay which was very refreshing and not too sweet. We all opted to do the restaurant week menu since it was $45 per person for a three course dinner! For food I tried: - Squash Blossoms: delicious appetizer! Two warm fried squash blossoms that had a crispy shell and a delicious filling of cheese and squash. They came over a bed of this delectable cumin aioli that complimented the sweetness of the squash very well. Would highly recommend! Good portion size! - Grilled Branzino: for my main I ordered the grilled branzino which was perfectly flaky, tender, and well seasoned. It came with a nice mix of peas and potatoes underneath which were delicious as well as a pea purée that was to die for. I don't even like peas but the combination of the branzino with the pea puree was divine. - Flourless chocolate cake: I ordered this for my dessert since I'm always weak for chocolate cake, specially for a flourless one. This one had a yogurt base so it maintained a rich chocolate flavor with a decadent and moist inside. Not too sweet which I really enjoyed. It came topped with a sour cherry sauce which added a nice tart hint to it. Super good! - Baklava: my partner and his mom both ordered this and I tried a little bit of it. The baklava was delicious! The phyllo was perfectly crispy and the filling had the right amount of sweetness and nuttiness. LOVED the Turkish ice cream on top. It added a nice refreshing and creamy balance without being too sweet. - Quail: my partner ordered this so I included a photo of it because the presentation was beautiful! I tried a bite and it was also delicious. Thick whole pieces of quail that were super tender and juicy were wrapped in this grape leaf that gave it a little bit of a tart balance and over a bed of farro with some nice spices like cinnamon. Super rich and good! Also very good portion size. - Filet Mignon Kebab: my partner's mom ordered this and I also got to try a piece! Flavorful, delicious, high quality beef that just smelled delicious. Really big portion as well. Overall I had a very positive experience here! The quality of the food was top notch and the restaurant week menu was actually a steal (as opposed to other places where it just does not seem worth it). The portion sizes were big. The service and ambiance were also incredibly pleasant. I took a peak at their regular menu and it looks very delicious too so I'm definitely planning to come back in the near future. Food was very good. You can taste the fresh ingredients. As for the apps: the zucchini blossoms were not my favorite, they were soggy. The branzino alone was not over seasoned but mixed in with the sauce and capers was a delicious balance. For dessert - the ice cream that came with the baklava was top tier! I was lucky to attend an event here, with 5-course Ottoman Opulence Tasting. They opened in August of 2023, and already made Eater's, Infatuation's, AND the New York Post's Lists of the "Best New Restaurant Openings of 2023." We cocktails to start off this event, Purple Velvet and Raki Mule. Purple Velvet was sweet and fruity, with beautiful color. It was really tasty! Raki Mule was minty and refreshing, with that notes of spice from anise, interesting drink. The candied ginger on top was a nice touch. The first course was Mezze Trio with baba ganoush, hummus, pistachio, and Turkish nuts & spices. We also received some warm pita breads, They were all fresh and flavorful, I really enjoy that as well. The second course was Beetroot Carpaccio. It had a nice sweetness to it, and velvety. The third course was Pan Seared Scallops with Turkish Pastirma. Scallops were super plump and seared just right. The pastirma had a good amount of salty flavor which went great with scallops that needed the extra oomph. The fourth course was Grilled Lamb Rack. They looked impressive, and had great flavor, and hazelnut coating was really tasty. I felt that the mean was ever-so-slightly overcooked. Other than that, it was a beautiful dish. Very filling and satisfying. The last course was the dessert. Roasted Pumpkin & Kaymak Mousse. This was an interesting dessert. It was almost like a mix of sweet and savory dessert, if such thing exist. One of my pumpkin slices was thicker and larger, and not cooked all the way. I did like the second, softer piece. It was elegantly sweet, and tahini went great with pumpkin. We sure had an amazing Event here at NAR. They care a lot about the ingredients, with its quality and where they source them from. The spice was very tasty and something I'm not familiar with so it was interesting. Rice was seasoned very well as well. Babagannoush $13 - second fav, typical goto. Done well, great flavor not bland not overpowering. Manti $26 - a bit underwhelming. Served lukewarm. Dough was thick with little filling inside, so the proportion is that dough is more than filling, I almost couldn't detect there's filling. Yogurt does not taste "smoked". Nar Icli Kofte $18 - thought the top layer would be a crust but it's like a dense cornbread texture (?), also serves lukewarm, yogurt helped. It was an okay dish. Not a cuisine I tried often so it was interesting, portion is quite small for the pricing. We were the only group during the lunch time. I believe not many customer is familiar with all the food terms in Turkish and our waiter seems not interested to explain the menu to us though I looked clueless. First time trying Turkish restaurant in this area, and it was a fantastic experience. From the moment we walked in, the service was top-notch--attentive, warm, and welcoming and great ambience. The food was incredible. I started with Manti, delicate little dumplings bursting with flavor and served over yogurt I believe... followed by the filet mignon Kebob, which was perfectly tender and well-seasoned. One of the highlights was a vegetarian dish featuring oyster mushrooms that tasted remarkably like meat--such a unique and delicious surprise! For dessert, I couldn't resist the dry ice cream topped baklava. It was phenomenal--both in presentation and taste, making for a sweet, memorable finish to the meal. The only dish that didn't quite hit the mark for me was the grilled octopus, but it was a minor blip in an otherwise amazing dining experience. Restaurant Week menu was generous, varied, and satisfying. The Zucchini Blossoms were delicately fried and delicious. The quail stuffed vine leaves was unusual and tasty. The Izmir Kofta and the Nar Kebab were so much more interesting than the menu suggested. For dessert we both had Istanbul Dreams, an unusual pastry combining several delicacies which had me dreaming of Istanbul. I might add that the welcome was warm, the decor lovely and without ostentation, and the service was excellent. While we weren't expecting the quality & quantity they have in Istanbul (country), neither the quality nor quantity was worth the $68 for two. Little Rascal in SoHo used to offer excellent Turkish Breakfast for $25 p/p. I wish they would start offering it again. Alas, we'll trek to Brooklyn for our Turkish breakfast fix. read more
