The khinkali were juicy, flavorful dumplings with that perfect burst of broth inside. I am a big fan of brothy dumplings; however, the dough was slightly thicker than I usually like. Nonetheless, flavor was good. The Adjaruli khachapuri was definitely the star of the meal! It was warm, cheesy, and incredibly creamy. My friend and I decided to come by for a quick meal while in the area, which was their brunch hour. We came in as walk-ins on a weekend and were seated right away indoors even though they also have a gorgeous outdoor patio space. Since it was our first time, the waiter recommended the Adjaruli Khachapuri ($19) for an shared appetizer and the Beef and Pork Kebab ($26) and Roasted Pumpkin and Eggs ($18) for entrees. We ended up ordering these exact items and the Adjaruli Khachapuri is a must at any Georgian spot. It's essentially cheese, egg, and butter blended right in front of you in a bread bowl. This was quite delightful and not too overpowering and heavy as I thought it would be with all the cheese; but still ideal to share with the table. As for the main dishes, these were just OK to me. I did not notice it at first since I was seated up front. If you are coming with a group, definitely try to get a table back there. Try also the Chicken Mtsvadi, which the menu describes as marinated chicken skewers with tarragon tkemali, red onions, and pomegranate. It was really flavorful. The dish came with tkemali, a sour plum sauce that had this interesting fruity-yet-tart flavor. I had never tried it before, but it paired well with the chicken. Since there is no Georgian restaurant close to my home in Miami, I seek them out while traveling. On my recent trip to NYC, Chama Mama was located within walking distance from my hotel. Having had Georgian food multiple times and in Tbilisi, both my husband and I knew about the various dishes. After being seated, our server approached us to take our drink order and explain the menu (which we both had thoroughly read over before leaving home). After informing her that we already knew what we wanted, she seemed a little put off and, up until it was time to pay, had a slight attitude. It's in the heart of Chelsea, close to the 14th street subway station with lots of space inside and a cozy back patio (covered) where we sat. Georgian food is always appealing to me as I always think I'm going to love the soup dumplings. This was a nice option and the food ended up overall being fine in the end. The soup dumplings (khinkali) were tasty and I did enjoy the flavoring, but I do wonder if some of the dough was undercooked. The roasted wild mushroom dish was pretty inspired and a bit of a surprise. We really enjoyed the flavoring and mixture of mushrooms. The pork mtsvadi was fine. The meat was tender and well-seasoned but I do wonder if it should have come with rice or something with it. Finally, the chiji piji was recommended so we grabbed that. It's similar to shakshuka, which we love. This was also just fine. I didn't feel like the overall flavor profile was very interesting, even with a runny egg which I always love. The rolls that came with the mushroom/chiji piji were delicious-so light. I do think it's strange the chiji piji only came with one so we ended up asking for another to soak up the sauce. I stopped by for lunch with a friend, and I have to admit it was a confusing menu that even the server didn't know the difference between lunch and brunch menus until having the orders placed. For starters, we had their signature Adjaruli Khachapuri, a delicious cheese, egg, and butter mixed in a bread bowl - yum! It's quite an interesting taste, since the egg was mostly raw, and it gave the cheese a runnier consistency - a smooth texture with a light taste, a perfect appetizer. Note: Make sure to record a video for the memories if you'd like to but be aware, because the server mixes it without notice! Additionally, we had their Pork Mtsvadi, which was on the drier end and quite salty. There was a bit of delightful sweet taste in it, too, but the herbs had masked it too much. We also had a side of their smashed potatoes in tarragon tkemali, which was also overseasoned and quite salty (!) This is probably one of the few times where I enjoyed the nice roast of a potato but didn't enjoy the overall taste of it. Overall, Chama Mama is a nice lunch spot in terms of ambiance and environment. Georgia is known for their red wines and after trying a few and getting some recommendations from our very kind and patient waitress, we landed on a bottle of red, specifically the Uzunashvili - Saperavi 2020. This was full-bodied, slightly fruity, with a lingering earthiness that was overall enjoyable! As for the food, my standouts were the Adjaruli Khachapuri, Lamb Khinkali, and Saperavi and Pomegranate Beef Stew. Every bite of these 3 dishes was satisfying, comforting, and full of mild yet flavorful spices. I was particularly disappointed by the Taste of Georgia. I enjoyed the beet and eggplant Pkhali but others didn't stand out to me. Also, the fact that they served it with 2 pieces of bread when we were a party of 4 was a bit distasteful. We had to pay an additional $3 for 2 more pieces of bread. I think it would be nice if they at least matched it to the number of guests considering it's just bread. I also had high hopes for the Honey Cake but it didn't taste as expected; I would skip it. There's plenty of seating even a back outdoor covered patio but we sat towards the front since it was quieter and easier to talk in. Good try! read more

We had a wonderful birthday lunch at Chama Mama. Sitting at the bar, the staff was overly kind and made the meal special. The food tasted fantastic, and we tried an array of menu items. Our Georgian wine and unique cocktails added to the celebration. Our favorites included the Imeruli Khachapuri and the Pan Fried Khinkali. However, we also enjoyed the Chicken Mtsvadi and the Crispy Smashed Potatoes. Our entire meal was lip-smacking good. I realize Chama Mamma has several locations in NYC, but it doesn't feel like a chain. I was so taken by the warmth and friendliness of everyone working at Chama Mamma Chelsea that I am planning a trip to the country of Georgia.
