I am a foodie and love to explore local favorites. we traveled to this place based on the online reviews of 4+ stars. We took the lunch thali as it had an assortment of dishes to try. As someone familiar with Indian food was disappointed. 1. Adding chicken/shrimp pieces to a precooked vegetarian Ghati curry is not authentic. The meat does not have any flavor. It seems to be just a scheme to extract more money without any flavor like the "add your protein" to a burrito. This is not how Indian meat curries are made. Meat needs to be cooked with spices and not something to just buy and pre-cooked meat pieces (which is what suspected) and add to a curry and charge more. 2. The dessert was just spoonful and dry. 3. Salad was leaves from a salad bag without even the dressing. The leaves were dried out out and did not match the thali. Looks like most of the reviews are from guests not familiar with the cuisine. I never leave reviews, but I'm hoping this might help someone else craving indian on the east side. My girlfriend and I ordered through Favor last night. It was prompt and hot (which is why this is 2 stars and not 1) but unfortunately it was the worst indian I've had in my life. The tex-mex fusion might be partially to blame, but the millionaire curry tasted like someone threw chunks of chicken in salsa and called it a day. The paneer saag was equally bad, tasting more like stewed grass clippings than anything indian or tex-mex. Suck it up and drive across town to Clay Pit or south of the river to Asiana. Went as a team on a fairly hot May evening and we got ourselves situated outside. The one thing that is weird and others have called out is that you have to go inside to order food and that becomes a little bit of challenge if you are a large group ( half a star off for that). Went there primarily because of the novelty of Indo-Texmex and overall food was fine. We ordered pitchers of Margaritas of various flavors and found them to be good but didn't feel the fusion vibe. Ordered a bunch of appetizers that all came out pretty quickly and tasted great - the chutneys/ dipping sauces were good but was somewhat restricted in quantity. Main course was good as well. Delicious! Roasted Chips & Salsa - The lentil chip was awesome. Perfect crispness and paired so well with the salsas. Shahi korma (chicken) - Really, really amazing. Even after picking it up and driving home 20 minutes before eating. Jalapeño Naan - Unbelievably tasty. Was great dipped in the shahi korma. We went on a Friday night with friends, for dinner. We got a table for 4 easily despite the restaurant being busy and staying busy during our time there. Our waiter was less than enthusiastic but attentive. We had the chips and salsa plus veggie samosas to start. All our food was flavorful and errs on the side of spicy. Our vegan friends had the relleno and tofu tacos for dinner. We had the tandoori chicken tacos and kheema masala for dinner. The food is affordable and tasty. The traditional masala and samosas are my go to. My fiancé loves the salmon tacos. You can pick a curry sauce from a few different choices to go on top. There's something about Nasha that's super endearing, perhaps the colors or the decor? When I lived in a different city, every morning I would order a hot drink from a local Indian deli. nasha's chai masala made me reminisce on those times. It came out scolding hot and I could taste the hint of ginger and spice. It was also served in a silver tin cup covered with the cutest cloth. My partner and I tried two different curries: chicken vindaloo and millionaire. While the curries were spicy (we ordered hot), I didn't think the vindaloo was all the flavorful - it seemed a little flat (or one note) to me. Unfortunately I have to update my last review - after several more good visits this most recent visit was very disappointing. I got the malvani coconut curry, and it was terrible (and my boyfriend agreed). I've never had coconut curry at Nasha for comparison, but it was horribly bland and tasted like I was eating steamed vegetables. I only took two spoonfuls and couldn't eat anymore, and that doesn't happen anywhere. I almost missed it when I was driving on 7th. Then you realize that how can you miss it. It's very colorful. They have a small parking lot. I was craving Indian food but my usual Bombay Dhaba was closed. It's a house which was converted into a restaurant. It's wasn't crowded when I went in. I had myself some veggie samosas which were good and obviously homemade. How did I know they were homemade? It was a different shape. I ordered the Mango Lassi but I shocked they only gave it to me in a cup and not a tall glass. Then I ordered Saag Paneer which was good too. My only complaint was they gave little rice to the huge portion of Saag Paneer. I didn't want to waste it and took it home. So, the upcropping of these beautiful fusions were bound to happen, which makes me glad to be here since they are my two favorite foods. Nasha's chile relleno is in fact the best chile relleno I've had here in Austin (aside from my own ;) ) and you can chose many different sauces and curries to top and fill it with. We live in San Francisco now, but when we lived in Austin 5 years ago Nasha was one of our favorites. We try to visit Austin once a year (pre-Covid) and Nasha is always on our "must eat" list. San Francisco has lots of Indian restaurants, but nothing as good as Nasha. The Tikka Masala flavor profile is like nothing I can find in SF, thick, creamy, warming and delicious! I really thought Nasha would be a good place, but the food was mushy. Everything seems like its been pureed in a food processor like baby food. Really unappealing! Plus, you're paying way to much for this level of food and getting NO SERVICE! You have to get up to order, get up to ask for your bill and anything else. They charge like they are a fine dining restaurant when they are really just another Sysco pre-cooked fast food place. They couldn't even make our Naan extra crispy when we asked! We sat out on the porch but had to move inside because the misting fan kept spitting out too much water on is. Also they music they are playing is like nineties pop. Why can't you all play middle eastern or Indian for some ambiance? Also, sorry, but wrapping a tortilla around some chicken tikka masala doesn't cut it as a mexican indian fusion dish! That's just lame. We paid $60 for two chicken tikka masala dinners and two orders of naan (one piece each). We drank water. No more of this place for me. If I had to pick a restaurant that embodies East Austin, it would be this one. It's Indian-Mexican fusion set in a house on East 7th staffed (seemingly) entirely by white hipsters. It just doesn't get more East Austin than that. Hell, does it even get more Austin than that? Who knows, but I guess I am all about it. Before you scream, "Gentrification!" let me explain you a thing. I asked for spicy and they delivered. I feel like that's all I should really have to say. For once, a place other than Tarka or Chicken Lollypop gave me desi hot. They trusted me to know my own spice tolerance and they fucking gave me what I asked for. This is a BIG DEAL for this white girl right here. That alone elevated them to god status in my book because I actually got to eat spicy food that made my nose run and my eyes water and now I will give them my business forever. By the way, the Millionaires curry is bad ass tastiness that I loved. You should order it because it's the shit. The good kind, not the poop kind, duh. The pomegranate margarita was also tasty as fuck. There is no frozen nonsense here, which is excellent because I have discovered I do not really like frozen margaritas. Nasha is an interesting addition to the east side. Casa Columbia was a place I think we all had a soft spot for though so I was pretty dubious. Nasha has certainly made the space their own with that gorgeous mural on the side and the cute outdoor patio. The Indian food is different. A little fusion-y with different dishes like millionaires curry, kaliwado shrimp, and mussels malvani. Skip the cocktails -- the ones we had were overly sweet or spiced -- though the wine we had was pretty decent. We ordered goat masala tacos and szechuan chicken. Both were delightful if a little small. The most important thing to know is that they are open late. Really late. It's nice to have Indian food on the East side, even if what Nasha is best at is not traditional Indian food. The atmosphere is fitting; cute house, cool mural, authentic silverware, and pop Bollywood music. Service is efficient and helpful for the staff size. The Good: *Full bar and half off happy hour specials on all their non seafood appetizers. *Two great lunch specials everyday. *The sweet cardamon lassi was deeelicious. *Lamb samosas are non traditional, more like empanadas but I loved them. *Their more European or fusion dishes are their tastiest, particularly the millionaire's curry and the tikka masala. *Naan is good, on the thin side and well toasted. *"Desi Hot" is actually really spicy! As in eyes watering-nose running-I need to slow down for a minute-spicy! From The Bad to The Ugly: *Paneer given in an order is rather skimpy, there were maybe 4 pieces? *That delicious lassi from earlier? I was a little concerned that it was poured from a premixed pitcher and arrived warm. *The saag was water logged and all the flavor was lost in the non-reduced sauce. *Vindaloo was absurd with the amount of tomatoes, it covered up the oily, spicy, vinegaryness of the dish. There are other dishes to get your tomato sauce fix, leave vindaloo alone! *The Korma had so much added sugar, I had to send it back. Tomatoes, cream, and nuts blended together should be sweet enough. *Added sugar is a concern here, maybe they're trying to cater to a more Western palate, but I ordered the Peshwari naan described as being filled with nuts, nothing else, and it was covered in sugar, literally. It was like dessert, I saved it and had it with a cup of coffee at home! Here's the thing about 3 stars, they're not bad places. Some 3 stars are places I frequent, and I can see myself coming back to Nasha, but your enjoyment will vastly depend on your prior experiences and expectations. This is definitely fusion Indian and not traditional Indian for most of the menu items. I have to say I really love their plate ware and glassware. Do: 1. Come for lunch or happy hour so you won't be out too much if you don't like it 2. Order the lamb samosas because they aren't traditional but, they are amazing 3. Raita Sauce: Order it and dip your nan bread into it (think gyro sauce with a bitter taste) 4. Order the garlic nan 5. If the millionaire's curry is on the lunch plate special order it and gobble up the delicious green beans 6. Mix the garbanzo beans in sauce into your basmati rice and curry 7. Do realize the curry is going to be very mild compared to traditional Indian curry Don't: 1. Add shrimp to your curry lunch plate because the quality and portion size isn't worth the extra money 2. Skip the "salad" that comes on the lunch plate special because it's just dry lettuce (Not good) 3. Don't expect to sit outside and eat on the patio in the heat because it isn't covered 4. Parking is limited in their private lot so get there early 5. Skip the weird dessert that comes with the lunch plate because it's a weird paste in a cup 6. Don't try to pack up leftovers because they won't reheat well 7. Nasha is an excellent example of a restaurant that brings you near-authentic while playing with fusion and delicious food while foregoing the unnecessarily high dollar value and pretentiousness like the Kiran's of Houston presents. This place gets me so much happiness and that is what you want from a restaurant after leaving. Happy memories. This is the complete opposite of what a dementor does when encoutered within the deathly hallows and that is why you should come get high on food at Nasha. After being told there was a 45 minute wait at another restaurant my friend suggested we try this place out as she had heard mixed reviews. After living in Texas for so many years and trying even more Indian restaurants this one really hits the nail on the head with getting their spices right. For the appetizer we ordered their version of chips and salsa which consisted of fried papadum (aka papad) with a salsa-like-salsa and a mint+coriander yogurt (raita). It was the first time that I have ever had papad with anything other than by themselves and it was a very pleasant experience. For my drink I ordered the sweet cardamom lassi. Usually people complain about that they don't like lassi. I tell them it's because in early 2000's there was a craze for mango lassi and ever since then people in America only really just serve mango lassi which I have a huge disdain for unless it is made right. This sweet cardamom lassi is life in a glass. I highly recommend it because it is soothing to the pallet without being overpowering and will aid you in eating your food if you find the spices to be a problem. Our server was trying to dissuade us from ordering the goat biryani because she said the biryani starts out with medium spices instead of mild. We said we can handle the heat. We decided to share our meals family style. In addition to the goat biryani we had the chicken tikka masala and the paneer coconut curry. Unlike many restaurants that I eat at in Houston, the naan at this restaurant was not complimentary and was a little bit on the buttery side. The goat biryani was cooked to near perfection. I was really not able to detect any presence of saffron in it but the minute small of rose water added to balance out the flavorings of the garam masala really meshed well together and was flavorful and NOT spicy as our server had indicated. The chicken tikka masala went really well with the naan. Both curries came with a side of plain white rice. We literally had the dishes wiped clean by the end of our meals. My favorite was hands down the goat biryani. We did not ask for it to be spicy because asking food to be spicy at an Indian restaurant is like signing your own death warrant if you can't handle spicy food. Note of caution: there were some brittle bones of the goat in the rice so be careful while eating that if you are not used to it. Overall, the ambiance was great and cozy. The bar area was fully stocked and what I found quite humorous was a little statue of Ganesh surrounded by bottles upon bottles of liquor. If you want a truly amazing food experience that will transcend any other Indian food experience then Nasha is a must. They really knew what they were doing when they went with the name of the restaurant which in Hindi colloquially means - to get high/to be inebriated. All our food tasted great! I came here for the first time with my boyfriend. We started with the lamb samosas. They came out hot and were a little spicy. The mint chutney went really well with them. For our entrees we ordered the millionaire's curry and the whole curried mussels, both with medium spicy. The spice level turned out to be lower than I would expect from in Indian restaurant, but it was still good. Next time I'll order another spice level up. The curry was flavorful and the lamb was tender. My only complaint is the entree portion sizes. They are kind of small. We wouldn't have been full if we didn't order an appetizer and naan. Service was great too! We came around 4, so it wasn't really busy. There were 3-4 other tables. There appeared to be one waiter seating people, taking orders, bringing food, and delivering checks.
