Nestled in the heart of Beverly Hills, Nate 'n Al's isn't going to win any awards for interior design. Old-school booths, a deli counter, and décor that basically says, "We were here before you could afford to shop on Rodeo Drive." But when it comes to the food, this place can hang with the best New York delis. And before we even ordered, out came the complimentary pickle platter--several varieties of pickles, because apparently at a real Jewish deli, amuse-bouche is French for "here's a plate of cucumbers soaking in vinegar." Sweet, sour, half-sour, crunchy--basically a pickle flight without the Beverly Hills price tag. The matzo ball soup was top-notch--soup simplicity at its finest. Rich chicken broth, a moist and tender matzo ball, noodles, and carrots. Nothing fancy, nothing reinvented, nothing served with microgreens or truffle foam. Just exactly what matzo ball soup is supposed to be. Then came our off-menu creation: corned beef and turkey with house-made coleslaw and Russian dressing on toasted sourdough. It arrived piled high enough to require FAA clearance, yet somehow the structural integrity was flawless. I ate the entire thing without a single piece of shredded cabbage escaping onto the plate. If Nate 'n Al's ever gets out of the deli business and goes into general contracting, hire them immediately. With sandwich-building skills like these, they could put up an 80-story high-rise on the San Andreas Fault and not lose a window. The atmosphere is equally authentic. A couple of the servers looked like they could have walked straight onto the set of The Sopranos without an audition. One compact, old-school Italian-looking gentleman in particular had me wondering whether my sandwich came with a side of "fuhgeddaboudit." So forego the fancy Beverly Hills lunch where your entrée arrives under a silver dome and costs about the same as a car payment. Go to Nate 'n Al's, get a real deli sandwich and a bowl of matzo ball soup, then walk a few steps over to Rodeo Drive and spend all the money you saved. Old school. No pretense. Serious deli. We went to Nate and Al's this morning for breakfast and we've been going there for many many years and it was fantastic. We had the Kim K, which is poached eggs on crispy hashbrowns with crispy bacon and it was delicious. Then I had a short stack of pancakes, which I only had half because it's way too much food, but it's great with a clear drawn butter. Whenever I'm in Beverly Hills I get a craving to go to Nate n' Al's for Jewish soul food. Today I had the matzoh ball soup and knish with gravy. The soup was comforting but a tad too salty. The knish was just as expected - nicely seasoned potato wrapped in thin pastry. Nothing fancy but it satisfies my nostalgia. My husband went with the pastrami with a side of Russian dressing. Nate & Al's has been around a long time, dodged a near-closing during Covid, and remains a favorite among the Beverly Hills folk who may not know better or may have forgotten what a truly good deli is. Oh, it presents as a textbook Jewish deli of old, with traditional brown booths and paneled dividers, dark Formica tables, and a menu featuring the greatest hits of deli dining. But the food here is overpriced and underwhelming, like so many of the other delis around town these days. The staff is nice, for sure. They welcome you with smiles, seat you quickly, and immediately offer you drinks. Everything is clean and well-preserved, so you feel like you're in for a great meal. I ordered my usual: Pastrami on Rye, Russian Dressing on the side, with Potato Salad. To drink: Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray, the very best soda for cutting through the richness of deli meat. The sandwich came promptly, and looked quite nice. The portion was appropriate for a normal sandwich (as opposed to being ridiculously stuffed), and the pastrami was nicely marbled. But looks can be deceiving. The bread was a bit too dense -- possibly made that way, or possibly a touch stale. Either way, after 2 bites I abandoned the bread and just ate the meat. The pastrami, while juicy with a soft texture, lacked flavor. I believe they bring their meat in from a purveyor, and the lack of inspiration is evident. Potato salad was also generously portioned, but had far too much mustard, and the result is a side dish that feels more Southern Picnic than Lower East Side. Again, this is a Deli serving a so-so sandwich at a price nearly the same as Katz's in NYC, and it's a shame. It's just not worth it. I've come to find that the best pastrami in Los Angeles is being served at places Johnny's in West Adams or on special at BBQ places, and usually at 2/3's the price. When it comes to Nate & Al's, I wouldn't say never go, but I wouldn't expect much bang for your buck -- or in the case of the pastrami sandwich, your 27-bucks. read more

Conveniently located near UCLA, came here for early dinner with my baby Bruin. This place is a foodies paradise. Breakfast options are served all day, which is perfect for me because who likes the flexibility of ordering a lox bagel anytime the craving hits. Also a lot of delicious options for pastries, pies, and treats. I love that this place gives you a pickle plate. My favorite were the pickle chips. I could eat those all day. Had Saturday lunch with my UCLA-student son. What a fun spot! We were seated quickly, though it was busy. We have been checking off old-school Jewish-style delis around the greater LA area, so Nate'n Al's was a natural choice. Normally, I get a pastrami sandwich, but my wife wanted to share a sandwich and you guessed it--turkey. Don't get me wrong, it was a good turkey sandwich, but not a pastrami sandwich. My son ordered the pastrami, and it was excellent. I shared the matzo ball soup with my wife, which was very good. The pickle platter on the table was a nice touch, and the shoestring fries on the side were a winner. I thought the service was quite good, especially for such a busy place. When you walk in, the dining room decor immediately transports you to another time...the pristine wood paneling and vinyl upholstery are a throwback to when menus weren't fussy and the food was fabulous. We shared potato latkes and chicken pot pie pockets and our server, Daniel, immediately advised us that the pot pie pockets would "take a little longer. Is that okay??" You'd better believe it was okay, because those babies were flaming hot and tasted amazing. The potato latkes were perfectly crisp on the outside and so, so good. Came here to get a corned beef sandwich for St. Patrick's Day after an appointment at Cedar's. I got the recommended corned beef sandwich with double rye bread , side coleslaw.. but not sure if I was supposed to put my own dressing for it, the meat was definitely very good. Easily one of my favorite Jewish delis in LA and definitely my favorite in Beverly Hills. As you would guess they have a huge menu filled with tons of options which is one of my favorite things about delis. Inside is large with tons of different booths as well as a large bakery area where you can get all sorts of baked goods to go. They don't have a dedicated parking lot however there is an underground parking garage on the same block with first 2 hours free parking. Our server was polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. Just like most delis I would say pricing is more than it should be though. It's not as much as a trendy restaurant but still more than a solid LA diner. For my dinner I chose the Corned Beef Sandwich and it was one of the best I have ever had. It was so juicy and bursting with flavor. I tried to get the Onion Roll but they were sold out so I opted for the Kaiser Roll instead and it was a good choice. I honestly loved every bite and I already want to go back and try more dishes. I wish they would have more soup options but honestly the flavors here are great and I would recommend to any fan of delis or to anyone visiting Beverly Hills. read more

Then another server came up and she told me that I can go inside. No matter if someone is black, white, spending $10 or $100, you treat them with the same respect. When I think of delis and diners, I think of really good food that doesn't break the bank. Unfortunately, Nate'n Al's does break the bank with most of their sandwiches being around $30, but also unfortunately, they're REALLY freaking good. My mom and I ordered the Brentwood (brisket sandwich with coleslaw and Russian dressing) and the Reuben and both were just incredible. Both were loaded up with tender, juicy meat. The coleslaw was delicious and the side of fries were great I think I vacuumed them up in 30 seconds. I would definitely recommend getting them on rye bread. We also tried the banana cream pie and that was one of the most delicious slices of pie I've ever had. I wold've never thought to order that myself, but it was really moist and the custard part of the pie was so flavorful I would definitely go back just to get that. I also ordered a black and white cookie and that was pretty good too. The service was quick and friendly and this place had that classic deli vibe with the big counter at the front and all of the brown leather booths. This time around, I came for brunch and decided to go all out. I ordered pastrami and eggs, which came with an onion bagel and hash browns. The pastrami was chopped into small pieces gave the eggs lots of flavor. The hash browns were flattened thin and crispy and the onion bagel was nice and chewy. I also ordered a cold slaw on the side. For dessert I ordered a warm chocolate babka. Yes that's a lot of food for one person. Granted, I didn't finish everything but everything was delicious! My server Shanice was awesome and she kept checking in on me. I ended up taking the bagel and half the babka to go so I can snack at the airport.
