This place was cool and the guy at the deli counter was very informative. I went in to buy some breakfast pastries for our wait in the Arianna Grande Pop up line. I tried several pastries that I don't know the names of. One item had a whole bunch of chocolate and chocolate chips, a blueberry muffin and a small nut cluster thing. All of them were great. We also hit up the restroom and the place was clean and the rest of the restaurant seemed like a cool old diner that I would enjoy a meal at. I will definitely return if I get the chance. read more

An institution that relies primarily on its name and history - definitely don't come here for the food. As soon as we walked in, we were met with an unpleasant smell of musty carpet and meat. The dining area is huge, with few other diners seated for dinner. You are offered free pickles to start, which are limp. The menu is huge, and the service is indifferent - we needed a little more time to decide and promptly lost our server. The prices are absurdly high for what you get - over $20 for most sandwiches, and the cup of soup for $8.50 is literally around a teacup size. I got a turkey club, which was extraordinarily dry and the "thick-cut bacon" were mostly thin crisps. If you want to have fries on the side for their "Deli Favorites", they charge extra. (In fact, the steak fries were the best part of the meal). Overall, they serve average food at way above-average prices for what it is. Well, on my way home from Weho early this morning, I stopped at this iconic deli to get cold cuts for our World Cup Final match... it was a great experience! The bakery man was so sweet as we discussed "rye" breads and the fellow behind the meat counter was beyond helpful and he greeted me with the biggest smile! An LA original! I've been eating here for decades and when they had the super 95th year super special I had to go! The line was bigger and thicker and longer than anything I've ever seen. It was truly intimidating yet strangely it still made sense. My boys and friend stood for 3 hours. We met some new friends along the way! It was one big stand up routine for the first 2 hours. Was here and happened to be on their 95yrs anniversary. Don't get me wrong but this place is iconic and well known in SoCal. With a lot of history how it started and moved here and the late night hangout place for celebrities and a place for musicians to do their thing at the lounge. Now in their 3rd generations, they're still hanging on to what was given...unfortunately they didn't quite maintain it well. They have the bakery, the deli and the lounge on the other side of the restaurant. With the big seating area in the back and the bar sitting on the entrance side, and if you turn right from the entrance, there is a big room for more seating then if you go future, there the lounge or bar. For me, this is more of a diner place than anything. Staff are okey, could be nicer since we got seated and waited for 10mins then I asked the helper, than see him told one of the waiter and see that he just shaked his head then walk away. So we just waited for another 7-8 mins for on coming staff to come over. Menu is big with plenty of great dishes. Ordered their well known pastrami and chili fries with vanilla shake. The shake is great and they gave the xtra (which is very nice), the fries are just okey (big beans and watering chili sauce with steak fries) - there's no favor and abit blanched. The pastrami was good, flavorful and well seasoned and cooked. The bread is with hard crush instead of soft, which is aok with me. The coleslaw was also blanched and they forgot the pickles, we asked and they brought it out. Overall it was okey or below what I expected but the pastrami was the best part of the meal. Got a slice of carrot cake (weight by the pound) and a cookie. Both are fantastic, they don't look good but do taste great. Parking can be a huge issue since they do have valid parking for free for 1-2hrs or you have to look for free street parking in the neighborhood. They do have front street parking for a fee. I can't visit Los Angeles without a stop to get yummy Canter's. The pickles are so delicious. The wait in line isn't that bad. They have validated parking if you can't find street parking. We shared the whitefish plate. The menu says it comes with onions, olives, tomatoes and capers on request. Get it all. It's so good. We got the whitefish salad rather than the cut of fish. It doesn't come with cream cheese on the bagel. The bagel is plain. We shared the latkes. They were little and tasted like the ones you can get frozen at Trader Joe's. A day of firsts. First time visit to the Tar Pits and first time at Canter's. I'm no stranger to LA and I've been to countless delis but never here. We met my folks here as it's halfway between Hunting Beach and Woodland Hills. Easy free parking in their lot. Great service and easy to get a table on a Sunday evening. I've heard about Canter's for years and driven by it dozens of times, but today was my first visit. Walking inside felt like stepping back in time. The place has that old-school deli feel with classic style booths, warm lighting, and a vintage atmosphere that hasn't changed much over the years. It's the kind of place with a lot of history, and that was part of the experience. They have a huge menu, but I had to go with my usual whenever I check out a new location, a Pastrami Reuben! The sandwich was stacked with plenty of pastrami, topped with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing on grilled rye bread. Everything tasted fresh, the bread had a nice crunch, and the pastrami was tender with a good smoky flavor. It also came with coleslaw and pickles on the side, which rounded everything out nicely. Overall, I had a pretty good experience. The place definitely has its own charm, but at $24 for the sandwich, it's a little out of my budget. It's been years since I've been here , but as long as we were going to a theater near here we thought it would be great to come back and have some good deli. The restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday at 6pm and Britney, our server, was very busy with may have been many tables. I ordered a senior 1/2 pastrami sandwich with chips and my wife ordered a salad with turkey (or chicken). My sandwich was okay and I added mustard to add to the taste. Legend has it that Canter's has gone downhill in recent years. I hadn't been there in quite a while, but from my latest visit I'm here to say that any decline is not so. I had my standard Jewish deli meal, a bowl of matzo ball soup and a pastrami half sandwich. (As at other places, the soup and half sandwich is a standard special.) The soup was a small bowl of clear broth with one giant matzo ball. And though it was so big it was half out of the broth, the matzo ball tasted as if it had been steeped in the broth. And the texture was ideal matzo meal and binder. The pastrami maybe not so great. It didn't have the brined taste of the best pastrami, but it was ideally fatty and worked perfectly with the rye bread. Service could be a little slow and spotty. read more

In a town where hash houses come and go like chorus girls in a midnight revue, there stands a joint of the first water known as Cantor's, one of the last of the truly great Jewish delicatessens in Los Angeles. Any citizen who grows up on this line of provender will feel as snug as a bug in a rug the moment he crosses the threshold. Now, I am here to tell you that the chow at this establishment is every bit as sound as anything you might encounter in the delicatessen palaces of New York City, and that is no idle chatter. When a character requests crispy fries, he receives fries of such admirable crispness that they fairly snap to attention. The coleslaw is a knockout, and the pastrami--lean, tender, and draped lovingly over fresh rye--is the kind of sandwich that can make a man forget his troubles and possibly his diet. To wash it all down, a bottle of Dr. Brown's cream soda proves to be just the ticket, completing a repast that leaves one feeling entirely at home. As for the décor, it is my considered opinion that not a single fixture should be tampered with, as the place possesses more character than a Broadway casting office. The waitresses are friendly, attentive, and just sassy enough to keep a patron on his toes, which is precisely as it should be. All told, this is exactly what a Jewish deli ought to be. I was never under the illusion that Canter's served particularly good food. At best, I considered it a passable approximation of a New York Jewish deli--an acquired taste, more institution than destination. I was indifferent to it. After our Passover dinner here in 2026, that indifference has hardened into certainty: I will never return. We had heard that Canter's did something special for Passover, so our party of six made a reservation, hoping for an alternative to hosting a Seder at home. I'll take responsibility for not researching the details more closely. As it turns out, they simply offer a small Seder menu alongside their regular service. That, by itself, would have been perfectly fine. The hostility began the moment we arrived. Despite having a reservation, the older woman greeting guests was inexplicably rude and unhelpful. Another employee eventually stepped in and seated us--and she was genuinely kind--so this criticism is directed specifically at the person who initially received us. Our server was no better. He first acted as though serving us was a major inconvenience, then became visibly impatient and rude when our table had reasonable questions about the Seder menu. Eventually, we had to make it subtly but unmistakably clear that we noticed his behavior and were not going to accept it. His attitude changed so abruptly it was almost comical. Suddenly, he became extraordinarily attentive, gracious and accommodating--a complete 180. Had that been his demeanor from the beginning, he might have been a delight. Instead, the transformation only made it obvious that his earlier behavior had been a choice and that he had badly miscalculated how much disrespect our table would tolerate. Then came the food, which somehow managed to be the worst part of the evening. It was awful. Not technically inedible, perhaps, but that is an embarrassingly low bar for a restaurant meal. We should have abandoned the Passover menu and ordered pastrami sandwiches, though based on this experience, even that feels optimistic. Nothing we ate inspired any desire to finish it, remember it fondly, or ever order it again. Canter's may survive forever on nostalgia, name recognition, and the fact that it is open when other places are not. But make no mistake, it certainly is not surviving on hospitality or the quality of their food. We came in indifferent. We left permanently cured of any reason to return. read more

The West Side + Pastrami = Canter's Ask any true Los Angeleno, when you say the word, "Pastrami", 2 places come to mind: 1) Canter's 2) For the sake of this review, this East Side institution will remain unnamed. (Let's just say that it rhymes with "Ranger's" & starts with a "L". We're not in New York, but I imagine that the California counterpart to the legendary Katz's Delicatessen is Canter's Deli. When you think true, authentic, Eastern European cuisine / Jewish Deli - this is not unlike what I have in-mind. You know that you're in a solid place when as soon as you walk-in, you have a bakery on the left (with a vast assortment of foreign pastries) & on the right, you have your true deli - meats, cheeses, & all. Take a few steps forward & the lovely hostess welcomes you in like you're part of the family. For a Monday afternoon (1pm-ish), it was around 70-80% full. Again, you know that you're in a great spot when it's just busy in a good way. Don't let the business deter you though because the servers here are at the top of their game. They can handle it all & then some. I particularly like that the layout is make in such a way that pretty much any seat you get is a booth. SOUP Matzah Ball - 8.9 I haven't had many matzah ball soups in my life, but I imagine that this is a very textbook version of the Jewish staple. The broth was the perfect temperature of not hot enough to burn your mouth, but not luke warm either. I feel like there is a scientist in the back of the kitchen who discovered the literal perfect "hot" temperature of serving soup. The broth is pretty much a chicken consommé. If chicken was liquid & clear, then this is what this broth is. The matzah ball was quite gargantuan. To me, it's at least the size of your average orange. The texture did not feel "mealy", but rather a pleasantly tender mush. This soup felt like a warm hug. Sandwiches Pastrami Reuben - 8.7 / 10 In my humble opinion, if there was a sandwich that represented Canter's it should be this one (however, I do pose a stronger alternative in the later part of this review). The pastrami is thin, but not too thin like a "West Coast" style pastrami like The Hat. It's got a nice bite & a meaty chew, yet it still melts in your mouth. The peppery crust stands out against the smokey tones of the brisket. I've been a bit lactose intolerant as of late, so I opted to forego the included swiss cheese. Also, pro-tip get the Russian Dressing on the side as spread it on as you bite to prevent unwanted sogginess. The sauerkraut provides a nice contrast in crunch & sourness. The rye bread is the undisputed vehicle for this lovely work of art. The crisp on the flat side of the bread was nothing short of glorious. Corned Beef Reuben - 8.8 / 10 Hot take - This is THE sandwich to get. If I could only get one sandwich, I would actually opt for this over the quintessential Pastrami counterpart. The pastrami is great and all, but the texture is of the thinly sliced corned beef is just melts in your mouth. There is no dominating smoky or peppery bite, just mild beef. Again, the sauerkraut adds the necessary acidity & that crisp rye bread is just grand. Again, pro tip: order the Russian Dressing on the side & apply per bite. Russian Cake - 6.9 / 10 It was interesting to try this flaky European pastry accented with slivered almonds & sweet paste. Plump raisins add a delicate sweetness but part of me wishes that the inner layer of pastry were a bit lighter + flakier. Huge shoutout to Bernadette, our server. Her hospitality was off the charts. I can honestly say that I felt that there really was never a moment when there was anything that I needed - whether it was a refill on my drink, extra napkins, or answering any & all questions that i could throw at her. read more

I have been to Canter's more times than I can count. And it never lets me down! It's food is consistently filling, delicious, has personality, and is varied- one can eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, with dessert, in one seating at Canter's Deli. In general, this place always delivers on taste and swallow. That is why it has earned its place in LA history for at its core is just a damn good eatery, in many ways for many people. But if you frequent the place long enough, you know that this place has pulse and purpose that borders on the magical, if you are the type of person that believes that eateries can hold pizzazz. One time, my friend Carlos and I went, to the West Hollywood Carnaval, the famous one that is held on Halloween. And he and I went to the nearby Norm's and the wait was longer than long. I was informed that All-Hallow's eve was the busiest night for the establishment and thus we would wait to be seated, not if I could help it. So I convinced Carlos to hop on an uber with me and head to Canter's Deli. There was no wait, we were seated, and we enjoyed the fare. I might have spotlighted, to some people, a release valve, that might completely diminish for food, after West Hollywood's Halloween Carnaval. On another night, which happened to be Valentine's Day, me and a friend were having dinner. And then the lights went off. We were eating at Canter's Deli, in light darkness. We could still see each other, and our plates, and others, but the light darkness added ambiance on a night where ambiance was most appropriate. I felt the definition of kismet tonight, just not knew it because I read on a dictionary. The last time, I went I was walking out, and I saw a person who wearing mime makeup. Yeah, that is what I feel most comfortable describing it: the person's face was all white, they had exaggerated lashes and dramatic red lips, with thin lines extending from both its ends. The person had their eyes closed, their head resting on the wall, their body relaxed, perhaps they were in a food coma or thinking about becoming a Parisian clown, which are close cousins to mimes. I caught the moment in a picture, which promotes the idea that this place is where life happens. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that I clipped this moment on a night that was not Halloween, so the person could have been dressed for a performance or their regular Saturday night. Either way, I applaud the mime for adding solemn cheer to my night. One of my favorite things in the menu is their cheese blintzes with applesauce, a strawberry sauce, (maybe a different berry) and sour cream. They are easy to love, they are sweet, flavorful, and a unique treat that cannot be secured in different spots. I have had some at Ihop and they are good, but, these taste special. This is my secret move when it comes to Canter's Deli. I also enjoy their milkshakes, their pastrami sandwich, and their Autumn in New York roof. I will not write more of this place because it has so much reputation behind it---- that other reviews comment on their sandwiches, their bakery section (that holds classic black and brown cookies) their potato salad, their lean cuts, and the great service! I had just come from seeing Sarah Silverman, Howie Mandel, and several other Jewish comics perform over at Hollywood Improv. And also Craig Robinson, who I doubt is Jewish, but you never know. I decided to take a long walk, heading in the direction of Canter's, based solely on a vague recommendation from a friend who lives in Los Angeles (I do not). Nothing prepared me for my experience there. It should be stated that I had smoked an entire joint on this walk. The magic began as I passed by the neon-dripping Brain Dead Studios, which advertised not only a David Lynch film, but also a Nicholas Cage retrospective. I knew the universe had me on the right path. I spotted a place called Genghis Cohen as I approached the deli, and so I knew I was in a place far more Jewish than anywhere accessible to me back home. I entered Canter's in a sort of psychedelic haze, unable to peel my eyes away from the magical ceiling for about 20 minutes. I had to pee so badly that I excused myself before ordering. I was told the bathroom was upstairs. As I climbed to the second floor, I was overwhelmed by the feeling of being surrounded by paranormal entities. I probably stayed up there 10 minutes taking pictures and trying to communicate with the dead. There is something pretty serious going on up there. I came back down and ordered vegetarian matzo ball soup and potato pancakes. I don't feel like any restaurant can do justice to potato pancakes. My mom's are still the best. And to be fair, my mom makes probably the best vegetarian matzo ball soup I've ever had. But this was by far the best matzo ball soup I've ever had at a restaurant. It was one of my favorite things I ate in Los Angeles for sure. But the magic of this place isn't necessarily in the food - although I certainly intend to try the vegetarian Reuben the next time I'm in town. After I ate, I slipped through the magical portal to the Kibitz Room next door. I could, after all, hear very loud live music throughout my meal. I ordered a beer and sat down and watched one of the best live cover bands I've ever seen in my life. And that's saying something, because I'm from New Orleans. I experienced a lot of extremely dope shit when I was in Los Angeles,, but the one-two punch of Canter's and the Kibitz Room might take the (kosher) cake. I have been going to Canter's with my family and friends for most of my life, and I am so lucky that it continues to be a staple trip when I am in town. (My twin sister lived a mile away.) If you aren't there early enough for their bagel chips, a to-go black and white cookie will do the trick. Their menu is expansive and I almost always end up ordering the challah french toast, even when it's later in the day. I love that Canter's is so storied. So many things filmed in and around there, so many celebrities and writers and executives hanging out there on random Tuesdays, getting their food fix surrounded by the history of LA. So it has been 11 years since I was last out to Canter's. I ordered the Fairfax on Rye. A great sandwich but I must say, I remember why I can't come here often. Prices are very high but I guess I love that this place is such an LA icon. Also, the portion was much smaller than I remember and certainly smaller than my local deli's. Unfortunately, it's very far from my SGV home and there are so many great small deli options closer to home. Our service was not great. Had to wait for my drink and asked for mustard options and my server brought me one bottle of spicy mustard. I just wanted to see why the other tables had four different bottles of mustard. A Los Angeles classic on Fairfax serving up sandwiches stuffed with meat, classic diner breakfasts, blintzes, knish, baked potatoes, and burgers. They're open 24 hours and offer patrons a vibey old school diner atmosphere. The food is pretty good overall. The sandwiches are a highlight, especially the pastrami and corned beef. I also really love the pastrami fries and the black and blue burger. Sides include steak fries, onion rings, salads, sweet potato fries, and kettle chips. There's also a special dessert counter where you can buy all sorts of pastries and cakes. There are a bunch of nice options there for ~ $1 each. I love the mini chocolate croissants. The prices are comparable to diners across LA and San Diego, and the portions are commensurate with what you spend. I definitely think Canter's on Fairfax is worth trying out! There something for everyone. Update: Came back recently for fun while on my way to LAX. I had the Matt's Special again without remembering I ordered it before! It was pretty good, with an interesting blend of flavors due to the slightly sweet cole slaw, Muenster cheese, and Russian dressing. I also had a beer and the complimentary pickles. My experience with delivery hasn't improved since my last delivery order two years ago. This time, the matzo ball soup was not only disappointing in flavor because it was bland, it was missing the chicken I paid extra for. The other items I ordered were good, but it's a shame that there is a definite pattern of inaccurate orders/omissions at this restaurant. read more

So excited to finally eat at Canter's Deli after hearing about it as an iconic L.A. eatery. My Jewish friends were with me and said the Matzah ball soup is good. It truly was! I got the soup and pastrami sandwich - half and half. Both delicious!! I love how much history is at Canter's and glad I finally got to experience it. This place looks popular when I walk by and is open late which is nice. I wanted to check out the bakery section to see what they had. Service was great but nothing was fresh, in fact the cake was the oldest piece of cake I have ever tasted, which was so disappointing. They should produce less quantity and just sell out early, instead of having everything on hand and it being just for show with horrible quality. I would not recommend. Save your money and go elsewhere! read more

Couldn't stay and eat. Just wanted a quick pastrami sandwich. The cost is roughly $21. That's only the sandwich and a pickle. No fries or other side offerings. Loved the pastrami with egg bread but it wasn't that big. I did really enjoy the sandwich and the server at the deli station was super friendly. I could do without the costly price but I get it. This place is a La La Land staple. It's been around for years. Very casual. read more
