Legend has it that Canter's has gone downhill in recent years. I hadn't been there in quite a while, but from my latest visit I'm here to say that any decline is not so. I had my standard Jewish deli meal, a bowl of matzo ball soup and a pastrami half sandwich. (As at other places, the soup and half sandwich is a standard special.) The soup was a small bowl of clear broth with one giant matzo ball. And though it was so big it was half out of the broth, the matzo ball tasted as if it had been steeped in the broth. And the texture was ideal matzo meal and binder. The pastrami maybe not so great. It didn't have the brined taste of the best pastrami, but it was ideally fatty and worked perfectly with the rye bread. Service could be a little slow and spotty. read more

I can't visit Los Angeles without a stop to get yummy Canter's. The pickles are so delicious. The wait in line isn't that bad. They have validated parking if you can't find street parking. We shared the whitefish plate. The menu says it comes with onions, olives, tomatoes and capers on request. Get it all. It's so good. We got the whitefish salad rather than the cut of fish. It doesn't come with cream cheese on the bagel. The bagel is plain. We shared the latkes. They were little and tasted like the ones you can get frozen at Trader Joe's. The apple sauce and sour cream were served in little to go closed containers. Odd. Our server was great and rushed us along. I love that time stands still other than the prices here. A day of firsts. First time visit to the Tar Pits and first time at Canter's. I'm no stranger to LA and I've been to countless delis but never here. We met my folks here as it's halfway between Hunting Beach and Woodland Hills. Easy free parking in their lot. Great service and easy to get a table on a Sunday evening. All the classic Jewish deli favorites plus their deli and bakery. We grabbed a cocktail in the bar and dinner in the newer dining room. Tasty stuffed cabbage dinner. The restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday at 6pm and Britney, our server, was very busy with may have been many tables. I ordered a senior 1/2 pastrami sandwich with chips and my wife ordered a salad with turkey (or chicken). My sandwich was okay and I added mustard to add to the taste. This was such a cool experience to be able to come to Canter's Deli! When we arrived the dining rooms were bustling but not packed yet, but by the time we left there was a line out the door to be sat! We met some friends and the pickles were free flowing, they just kept bringing us table pickles and this is one of the coolest aspect about this cool place! You can tell this place is a long standing staple for so many for so long, there are pictures all over of stars and important people through the years, so cool being in a place that has so much history. Oh em geeee this place was SO good. I've been wanting to try it for so long and it didn't disappoint. The pastrami sandwich was actually one of the best things I've ever had. I got it with fries and it was chefs kiss. Very filling could only eat half. We asked for pickles and they gave us that huge plate which was so nice! LA native here having dinner for the first time at Canter's. I'm ashamed that it took us over 50 years to visit. We usually go to the Farmers Market. We loved how easy it was to get parking and a table. The staff are very friendly and attentive. They provided our water and pickles in no time. The pastrami was delicious. Very flavorful and not overly salty like other places. Potato salad and steak fries were delicious. Even the iced tea was fresh and not old. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Of course we had to grab dessert for the road. Can't wait for those. Definitely will go back. Don't compare it to other famous deli's in LA, it's got it a twist. This place looks popular when I walk by and is open late which is nice. I wanted to check out the bakery section to see what they had. Service was great but nothing was fresh, in fact the cake was the oldest piece of cake I have ever tasted, which was so disappointing. They should produce less quantity and just sell out early, instead of having everything on hand and it being just for show with horrible quality. I would not recommend. We went on a sleepy Wednesday night for dinner. We were quite literally the only two in the upper dining room. Our server was, a trip. She was so so quiet, simply took the order and would scurry away. It was bizarre but also entertaining. Other than that, our food was freaking delicious. This place is more nostalgic and convenient to the locals for good Jewish foods. Parking is a bit of an issue as it is only valet unless you can find street parking which is also limited. Another place where the hostess could have been better. She seemed stressed. The decor is a bit dark, but this is a very old establishment. I think this place is open 24 hours from what I remember. It gets a four star rating because the food is not well seasoned. The West Side + Pastrami = Canter's Ask any true Los Angeleno, when you say the word, "Pastrami", 2 places come to mind: 1) Canter's 2) For the sake of this review, this East Side institution will remain unnamed. (Let's just say that it rhymes with "Ranger's" & starts with a "L". We're not in New York, but I imagine that the California counterpart to the legendary Katz's Delicatessen is Canter's Deli. When you think true, authentic, Eastern European cuisine / Jewish Deli - this is not unlike what I have in-mind. You know that you're in a solid place when as soon as you walk-in, you have a bakery on the left (with a vast assortment of foreign pastries) & on the right, you have your true deli - meats, cheeses, & all. Take a few steps forward & the lovely hostess welcomes you in like you're part of the family. For a Monday afternoon (1pm-ish), it was around 70-80% full. Again, you know that you're in a great spot when it's just busy in a good way. Don't let the business deter you though because the servers here are at the top of their game. They can handle it all & then some. I particularly like that the layout is make in such a way that pretty much any seat you get is a booth. SOUP Matzah Ball - 8.9 I haven't had many matzah ball soups in my life, but I imagine that this is a very textbook version of the Jewish staple. The broth was the perfect temperature of not hot enough to burn your mouth, but not luke warm either. I feel like there is a scientist in the back of the kitchen who discovered the literal perfect "hot" temperature of serving soup. The broth is pretty much a chicken consommé. If chicken was liquid & clear, then this is what this broth is. The matzah ball was quite gargantuan. To me, it's at least the size of your average orange. The texture did not feel "mealy", but rather a pleasantly tender mush. This soup felt like a warm hug. Sandwiches Pastrami Reuben - 8.7 / 10 In my humble opinion, if there was a sandwich that represented Canter's it should be this one (however, I do pose a stronger alternative in the later part of this review). The pastrami is thin, but not too thin like a "West Coast" style pastrami like The Hat. It's got a nice bite & a meaty chew, yet it still melts in your mouth. The peppery crust stands out against the smokey tones of the brisket. I've been a bit lactose intolerant as of late, so I opted to forego the included swiss cheese. Also, pro-tip get the Russian Dressing on the side as spread it on as you bite to prevent unwanted sogginess. The sauerkraut provides a nice contrast in crunch & sourness. The rye bread is the undisputed vehicle for this lovely work of art. The crisp on the flat side of the bread was nothing short of glorious. Corned Beef Reuben - 8.8 / 10 Hot take - This is THE sandwich to get. If I could only get one sandwich, I would actually opt for this over the quintessential Pastrami counterpart. The pastrami is great and all, but the texture is of the thinly sliced corned beef is just melts in your mouth. There is no dominating smoky or peppery bite, just mild beef. Again, the sauerkraut adds the necessary acidity & that crisp rye bread is just grand. Again, pro tip: order the Russian Dressing on the side & apply per bite. Russian Cake - 6.9 / 10 It was interesting to try this flaky European pastry accented with slivered almonds & sweet paste. Plump raisins add a delicate sweetness but part of me wishes that the inner layer of pastry were a bit lighter + flakier. Huge shoutout to Bernadette, our server. Her hospitality was off the charts. I can honestly say that I felt that there really was never a moment when there was anything that I needed - whether it was a refill on my drink, extra napkins, or answering any & all questions that i could throw at her. read more

A classic historical deli in Los Angeles. I would certainly recommend going here if you've never been, because I feel like it's an LA classic. It's very very busy. So you probably won't be getting the best service. But you WILL be getting a very good, very filling sandwich. And you will not be leaving hungry. I loved their Hollywood sandwich - came with pastrami, turkey, Swiss, & Russian dressing. Such a classic. The pastrami is so tender and salty and flavorful. Their rye bread is fluffy with crisp edges at the same time. They've got those big soggy fries that you just need sometimes after a long day. So it has been 11 years since I was last out to Canter's. I ordered the Fairfax on Rye. A great sandwich but I must say, I remember why I can't come here often. Prices are very high but I guess I love that this place is such an LA icon. Also, the portion was much smaller than I remember and certainly smaller than my local deli's. Unfortunately, it's very far from my SGV home and there are so many great small deli options closer to home. Our service was not great. Had to wait for my drink and asked for mustard options and my server brought me one bottle of spicy mustard. I just wanted to see why the other tables had four different bottles of mustard. I have been to Canter's more times than I can count. And it never lets me down! It's food is consistently filling, delicious, has personality, and is varied- one can eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, with dessert, in one seating at Canter's Deli. In general, this place always delivers on taste and swallow. That is why it has earned its place in LA history for at its core is just a damn good eatery, in many ways for many people. But if you frequent the place long enough, you know that this place has pulse and purpose that borders on the magical, if you are the type of person that believes that eateries can hold pizzazz. One time, my friend Carlos and I went, to the West Hollywood Carnaval, the famous one that is held on Halloween. And he and I went to the nearby Norm's and the wait was longer than long. I was informed that All-Hallow's eve was the busiest night for the establishment and thus we would wait to be seated, not if I could help it. So I convinced Carlos to hop on an uber with me and head to Canter's Deli. There was no wait, we were seated, and we enjoyed the fare. I might have spotlighted, to some people, a release valve, that might completely diminish for food, after West Hollywood's Halloween Carnaval. On another night, which happened to be Valentine's Day, me and a friend were having dinner. And then the lights went off. We were eating at Canter's Deli, in light darkness. We could still see each other, and our plates, and others, but the light darkness added ambiance on a night where ambiance was most appropriate. I felt the definition of kismet tonight, just not knew it because I read on a dictionary. The last time, I went I was walking out, and I saw a person who wearing mime makeup. Yeah, that is what I feel most comfortable describing it: the person's face was all white, they had exaggerated lashes and dramatic red lips, with thin lines extending from both its ends. The person had their eyes closed, their head resting on the wall, their body relaxed, perhaps they were in a food coma or thinking about becoming a Parisian clown, which are close cousins to mimes. I caught the moment in a picture, which promotes the idea that this place is where life happens. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that I clipped this moment on a night that was not Halloween, so the person could have been dressed for a performance or their regular Saturday night. Either way, I applaud the mime for adding solemn cheer to my night. One of my favorite things in the menu is their cheese blintzes with applesauce, a strawberry sauce, (maybe a different berry) and sour cream. They are easy to love, they are sweet, flavorful, and a unique treat that cannot be secured in different spots. I have had some at Ihop and they are good, but, these taste special. This is my secret move when it comes to Canter's Deli. I also enjoy their milkshakes, their pastrami sandwich, and their Autumn in New York roof. I will not write more of this place because it has so much reputation behind it---- that other reviews comment on their sandwiches, their bakery section (that holds classic black and brown cookies) their potato salad, their lean cuts, and the great service! I went to Canters a week ago. I was told there would be a 30 minute wait to be seated. I went to take out instead. The he person who took my order was an Afro American male. He appeared cold when he took my order. When he gave me my order he just told me the price and didn't ask for my parking validation I had to give it to him. When I got my order and took it to my car I realized he didn't give me any utensils or napkins. I ordered a sandwich coleslaw and a drink. I had just come from seeing Sarah Silverman, Howie Mandel, and several other Jewish comics perform over at Hollywood Improv. And also Craig Robinson, who I doubt is Jewish, but you never know. I decided to take a long walk, heading in the direction of Canter's, based solely on a vague recommendation from a friend who lives in Los Angeles (I do not). Nothing prepared me for my experience there. It should be stated that I had smoked an entire joint on this walk. The magic began as I passed by the neon-dripping Brain Dead Studios, which advertised not only a David Lynch film, but also a Nicholas Cage retrospective. I knew the universe had me on the right path. I spotted a place called Genghis Cohen as I approached the deli, and so I knew I was in a place far more Jewish than anywhere accessible to me back home. I entered Canter's in a sort of psychedelic haze, unable to peel my eyes away from the magical ceiling for about 20 minutes. I had to pee so badly that I excused myself before ordering. I was told the bathroom was upstairs. As I climbed to the second floor, I was overwhelmed by the feeling of being surrounded by paranormal entities. I probably stayed up there 10 minutes taking pictures and trying to communicate with the dead. There is something pretty serious going on up there. I came back down and ordered vegetarian matzo ball soup and potato pancakes. I don't feel like any restaurant can do justice to potato pancakes. My mom's are still the best. And to be fair, my mom makes probably the best vegetarian matzo ball soup I've ever had. But this was by far the best matzo ball soup I've ever had at a restaurant. It was one of my favorite things I ate in Los Angeles for sure. But the magic of this place isn't necessarily in the food - although I certainly intend to try the vegetarian Reuben the next time I'm in town. After I ate, I slipped through the magical portal to the Kibitz Room next door. I could, after all, hear very loud live music throughout my meal. I ordered a beer and sat down and watched one of the best live cover bands I've ever seen in my life. And that's saying something, because I'm from New Orleans. I experienced a lot of extremely dope shit when I was in Los Angeles,, but the one-two punch of Canter's and the Kibitz Room might take the (kosher) cake. I have been going to Canter's with my family and friends for most of my life, and I am so lucky that it continues to be a staple trip when I am in town. (My twin sister lived a mile away.) If you aren't there early enough for their bagel chips, a to-go black and white cookie will do the trick. Their menu is expansive and I almost always end up ordering the challah french toast, even when it's later in the day. I love that Canter's is so storied. So many things filmed in and around there, so many celebrities and writers and executives hanging out there on random Tuesdays, getting their food fix surrounded by the history of LA. A Los Angeles classic on Fairfax serving up sandwiches stuffed with meat, classic diner breakfasts, blintzes, knish, baked potatoes, and burgers. They're open 24 hours and offer patrons a vibey old school diner atmosphere. The food is pretty good overall. The sandwiches are a highlight, especially the pastrami and corned beef. I also really love the pastrami fries and the black and blue burger. Sides include steak fries, onion rings, salads, sweet potato fries, and kettle chips. There's also a special dessert counter where you can buy all sorts of pastries and cakes. There are a bunch of nice options there for ~ $1 each. I love the mini chocolate croissants. The prices are comparable to diners across LA and San Diego, and the portions are commensurate with what you spend. I definitely think Canter's on Fairfax is worth trying out! Classic Canter's Deli delivers maybe my favorite deli experience in Los Angeles! This place has been a Los Angeles landmark for decades, and after our visit, it's easy to see why. We had the Pastrami on Rye, which was incredible (tender, smoky, and piled high). The Corned Beef Reuben was equally delicious, really well-balanced with melty cheese and tangy sauerkraut. For dessert, we shared the Strawberry Cheesecake, and it was heavenly. Not overly sweet, but with strawberries that really brought a ton of flavor. The service was excellent (attentive without being overbearing), and the experience was made better by the ambiance. I love a good old school diner, and this is exactly what that is. Waiter was real good. Fast service. But, saw I did not eat good and did not want to take it home. Did not say anything. I love corn beef sandwich's. I have had great to ok. This one is in a class of its own. It was the worst I have ever had. It looked like leftover ends. It no taste and chewy. It was small pieces. The bread tasted like it was stale. The crust was so hard. I ate two bites. Added mustard. And it was still not eatable. The coleslaw was dry coleslaw supposed to have some juice. This one did not. Now let me go onto the pickles. I love pickles. I eat pickles twice a week all over the country. in fact all over the world I've had pickles. These were the worst I've ever had. I don't know what has happened to Canter's but Canter's is no longer a good deli. I would avoid going there at all cost. The only good thing about it was the service. Talk about Mid-Century Modern decor! Canters has been around for awhile. Large menu everything you would expect in a diner! My son ordered a Brisket of Beef Dip Sandwich with Fries, the wife ordered 1/2 Tuna sandwich with cup of Minestrone Soup, I ordered a 1/2 Pastrami on Marbled Rye with a Cup of Vegetable Beef Soup! Slow service, cold mosh mosh soup and they delivered our sandwiches not together. The other person sandwich looked like it was burnt not impressive for a Jewish landmark. Terrible corn beef had no taste. The sour pickles were overly pickled. They were soft and mushy. Very disappointing. Dark interior for daylight. Port Port of Fairfax all the businesses around Canter is closed. I would not go there at night unless you're very very brave. read more

Still loving this place, years later. L.A. has changed quite a bit over the years, and not for the better. Canter's, though, keeps rolling along, a place of comfort, fun and, of course, good food. The word "vibe" was made for a restaurant like this! First visit back in awhile and, since it's the holidays, chose the "Thanksgiving Turkey" dinner. Included all the basics: great quality turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes/gravy and cranberry sauce. Added a cup of delicious vegetable beef soup. And, since it IS a deli, had to have some of their pickles! Service? Great, as always. Decor is the same as before; no need to change perfection! Thanks for always being there, Canter's! read more

Enjoyed my experience here, but left wishing there was more - I'd give my experience a 3.5/5. Got the Matzo Ball Soup (first time trying) and it was simple, but very good and comforting. The Caesar portion size was huge and was generously dressed. The Pastrami Reuben was $22 and although it was delicious, the portion size felt small for the price point. Easy parking in the attached lot and very casual atmosphere with friendly staff. We also got some treats at the pastry section in the front, and I enjoyed the NY cheesecake, they nailed down the classic. read more
