I had an alternator on a 300M that needed to be replaced. I had started the job myself but was stopped once i hit the point where I thought there was still a single bolt holding the alternator on. All the hood trim, belt tensioner, and everything else was off and out of the way. Nate arrived on time, but as soon as he started he began saying the job would take longer than 30 minutes. It felt as if he was already trying to "pad" the job He walked up to the Alternator and used pry bar against it gave it a little force and the alternator was out. It had a single pin I didn't know about. I offered to give him $20 for his time at that point (10 min), but he declined and continued. I had my hands dirty the entire time giving him a hand. He did not ask specifically but didn't tell me stop, let him handle it etc... I still thought everything was going alright. Then he said he couldn't find the correct bolts but I know i never take them away from the parts they are from. No biggie, he threw in some non standard bolts. But nothing major, they fit, looked strong enough to hold. Nate had an issue with a spacer that came on the new Alternator. He pushed it one way too far and had to put in back to the original spot. Again no big deal, said he had never seen it before. Then he was unsure of how the tensioner went back on. Eventually we figured out how to seat it right (hopefully). We put the belt on, which seemed a little off of center, where it sat on the tensioner. Again, I am not sure if that's correct, but neither was he totally. And that was the main issue for me. I then started the car and about 30 seconds in , all the lights came on the dashboard, the car started to act like it was getting ready to stall, and then started to smoke from behind the alternator, near where the head meets the block (in that area). I shut the car off, and then Nate said, "We'll sorry to leave you like this, but maybe it's your battery." He put the voltmeter on it and said the battery needed to be charged. He then left. I paid $50 for 40 minutes of work roughly (a third of that was messing with that spacer and a 3 minute phone call). He had originally quoted me $80 for the entire job. It was my understanding for $80 I would have handed him the part and been called over when he was finished. I think I overpaid by $20. But I should have said something before I gave it to him. My problem was; I was left with 30% of the job to finish, had done another 40% getting it to the point where the alternator was ready to be removed. and the car was in a worst spot then when he started. Even if he had nothing to do with the smoke coming from behind the alternator he could have at least offered to look into and repair it.(for payment) Nate was punctual, but seemed more concerned with getting the money and leaving as fast as possible rather than helping a customer get their car back on the road. I also understand Nate is much cheaper (shop would have been $300 with the alternator) than a shop but if something happens you have no protection and no recourse. This was my first mobile mechanic, but I think next time would use a shop or I would ask to valid ASE certification and insurance for the mechanic, either for personal injury if he is harmed on the property or if your car is damaged. read more

Super honest! So I went to get a free brake check at a shop down the street from me because my steering wheel was shaking on my 2009 Toyota Camry when I would hit the brakes and my dad told me that that could be brake rotors. The shop told me I needed new pads and rotors in the front and rear and it was going to be about $640. Ouch... Anyway, the person seemed honest, but I know that, as a women I'm a target for shady mechanics and just thought that a second opinion would be a good idea. So I was relating the above to a co-worker and he told me that he had used a mobile mechanic a couple months back and he seemed honest and he did a good job. So I got his # and texted him my info along with what the shop told me I'd need but that I was hoping for a second opinion. Within 15 mins he had replied with a quote of what it would be IF it needed what they said it needed, but he would confirm before doing any work and he pointed me in the right direction where I could get the best deal on the parts. So after picking up the parts, we scheduled a time for him to come over and get the work done (on a Saturday morning nonetheless so I didn't even have to wait around at a shop) and he promptly arrived at 8am. He said that the front pads were at about 50% which means I didn't need to get them changed but the rotors definitely needed changed because the steering wheel shimmy. I had him change the pads anyways... so then he went to the rear wheels and he showed me that the rear pads looked almost new!!! And the rotors were fine... grrrrr... In the end, it only cost me $195 instead of the $640 and my brakes are working great! I will definitely be using him again! Thanks Nate!!! read more

I had a different mobile repair mechanic come out to install struts in my Toyota Corolla. He mentioned he had to disconnect my break line and believes some air got in there. He stated though it should be fine and the air would work its way out. That really concerned me so I did some research online after he left. What I discovered is it's a closed system and air won't 'work it's way out' and you'd normally want to 'bleed the line' to remove any air. I really didn't want to drive it like that and I also didn't want to call back that same mechanic. So, I went to Yelp and discovered Nate's Brakes. Nate is a super knowledgeable & nice guy and he came out to my townhouse same day. While he was there he evaluated it. The brakes appeared to be working at that time, although, I couldn't remember if I have had my brake fluid changed and I've had this car since 2003. The fluid in it also seemed pretty old. So with everything, I just decided to have a service where he put in all new fluid and bled the lines, removing old fluid and any possible air. I'm very happy with this service and have a lot more peace of mind having that taken care of. I was also surprised in that the charge was very reasonable. While he specializes in brakes, he will also consider other car repairs as well and I plan to have him out again soon. Would highly recommend. Met Nate while he was working on a coworkers car at work. Asked him if he could do a job on my truck and we had an appointment set for a tranny fluid service.
