Arriving on the last flight of the night is always a challenge as far as choices go. Especially so at smaller airport stations that do not have an "Emerald Aisle." I had booked an intermediate and when I arrived at the counter, the gents offered me a choice: SUV or minivan. Do single travelers really choose minivans? So I opted for the SUV. It was a full size Ford Expedition with more than 32000 miles on the odometer. On the plus side, the car was clean and functional. It's just a hog to park and will probably be a rather expensive tank to fill up. It's a short walk from the rental desk to the lot. If it's raining, you are going to get wet. read more

I rent from this location often, and their service has been consistently declining in the last few months. On my most recent rental return, the agent at the desk was awful. Although there was a line forming among customers, he tried to engage in meaningless conversation with obviously busy customers who were pressed for time. It was clear the one customer was not interested in hearing about the agent's obsession with soccer, and another customer was not interested in hearing about the agent's grandparents' physical ailments. Yet, the agent made each customer stand in line, waiting for him to do his job. It was very frustrating! read more

I used Hotwire to book a midsize car that I could pick up at the Charlottesville airport after a long and exhausting red-eye flight from San Francisco. I had actually never rented a car before, so when the amount was more than I'd agreed to on Hotwire, I was able to make a few adjustments that brought the price down some and went on my weary way. The car I got was great and everything was working out, but the discrepancy between the Hotwire price and the contract I'd signed still nagged at me, so before my week was up I went back to the airport and talked to Kevin, the Branch Manager. He figured out why there were extra charges and reconfigured my contract so I ended up paying a little less than I'd agreed to on Hotwire. I really appreciated that he was so willing to explain the different levels of insurance and get me back to the deal I'd originally made. Things can get confusing when you go from travel websites to the actual counter, so it's wonderful to have people who are understanding and want to make their customers happy. Thanks, Kevin. Thought CHO National was our savior after re-routed flight landed us 2 hours from our destination. Instead, we were charged twice, first when we got the car and again after we dropped it off. We called customer service and were told to call the CHO office directly, only no one there would answer. When we finally got through to someone, they said we were undercharged for the amount of time we had the car and for leaving it at another airport. These were the exact issues we had discussed with the clerk initially! Save your sanity and call a taxi. read more

I flew in to Charlottesville for a business trip to Harrisonburg, VA. Picked up my rental car at CHO and headed to Harrisonburg. About 50 miles from the airport the car started jerking slightly and the check engine light came on. I called the National Roadside Assistance # thinking about how having to mess with this could cost me an entire day of productivity. Their response was a complete and pleasant surprise. I had a replacement vehicle in a matter of minutes, no questions asked, allowing me to stay focused on my job. I was wondering how much explaining I would need to do when I got back to Charlottesville later in the week with a different vehicle. It turns out none. They were completely up to speed and I had no issues. Things can happen but the kind of service I received in response was absolutely incredible to me. In today's world of poor service, I couldn't have been more pleased with the people at National. Their entire focus was on making it easy for me. read more

I had to wait over 10 minutes in line to be helped and then had to wait at least an additional 10 minutes for a car because they didn't have any ready. I requested a larger car because I had 4 people total, but was told I could have the first available which was Ford Focus. So we squished in and then were immediately disappointed with the car's performance. Any time you accelerated the car would shake a bit as if it was desperate for a new transmission. Additionally, when we didn't have someone in the backseat, it wouldn't stay locked in place, so it flipped forward. When I reported this to the agent who helped me when I returned the car he told me I should have called him so they could have swapped it out. No, you should thoroughly inspect your cars so that your customers don't have to deal with this. Everyone was nice, but nice only goes so far. read more

As I usually rent cars at larger airports requiring transportation to off site lots, I was impressed with the easy access and the good choice of cars available at CHO. Returning the car was also easy requiring only a short walk from rental return to the terminal and check in. read more
