If you have kids and are looking for a change a pace, this should be on your list. Having.a12yo, going to the normal dc museums day after day was a bit much. The Children's Museum provided a much needed outlet for some of that pent up energy. Calling it a museum is a bit misleading. Activity center or stem center would be a better descriptor. Anyway, it's easy to spend a few hours in this space while you children explore all the different hands on attractions. .

The national children's Museum was my kids' favorite stop on our most recent trip to DC. We spent over three hours here. My kid would've happily spent another hour or two had we let him. Thankfully, the place was closing at six and so we had to go. I love that they have lots of hands-on stuff for kids to do, but there's also lots of physical activities like climbing that he can do. They had a very large play place plus places to build things and race cars. They had a SpongeBob area, paw patrol area, and wild Kratts area. I think the wild Kratts was a special exhibit. The location was convenient not too far from the national mall; part of the Ronald Reagan building. The only thing that was frustrating was that all children and adults pay the same price. Anyone over one year of age is $18.95. There is definitely not as much stuff for a two year-old as there would be for a 6 or 7 year old so that seems a little silly. Additionally, it seems wild that parents who basically sit there on benches and play with their phones have to pay the same price as a child. That's really the downside. Children under 3 should be half price. Parents should be half price.

It's a great spot in the city for indoor play. We need more of this kind of space for rainy/snowy days)... most places like this are in the burbs. All that said, it is on the small side for a children's museum (but easier to not lose your kid if they're adventurous haha). It's still worth getting a membership as a local IMO because they change out some spots to keep it interesting and kids love it. There are spots for under 3 and for older kids. They do bday parties as well. Sometimes it sells out on weekends and holidays.

Dare I say best children's museum ever?! I've visited several children's museums across multiple states and this takes the cake as the best. From the outside it looks small & unassuming but then inside has so many layers & much to offer for all ages. I was able to buy tickets same day without any preregistration. The staff was kind & family friendly. The building was immaculately clean & well kept. Lots of thoughtful touches with the stroller parking, lactation/quiet rooms, clean and well stocked restrooms, reading area, & plenty of seating throughout the building. The Spotify Dance pod was one of the coolest features. The tablet inside does take a few minutes to load but it's worth the wait for an epic dance party with the songs of your choice. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for all ages & a must visit when in the area!

My son loves this museum, it's a great activity for a rainy day or a school break. Pros: My son is four and for him this is a great space to run around, get some energy out and try some different activities. It's not huge, but there's enough to keep young kids occupied for several hours. He loves the big slide/climbing area in the middle. There is also a tunnel that looks a bit like a human car wash that is always a big hit. They also have a rotating exhibit room so it's a little different every time we go--last time they had an area where kids could pretend to move construction blocks and that he really enjoyed. Cons: It can feel a little more like a play zone than a museum. If you're really looking for a learning experience for your children I'm not sure this is the space. I think it's also a little overpriced--about $15 a ticket for both kids and adults so that can add up if you have several children and adults in your group. Personally, I think calling it the National Children's Museum is also a tad deceptive because it could give someone the impression it's part of the Smithsonian museums (which are free). Bottom line: This is a good place for an occassional outing for my 4 yr old. A little overpriced, but it keeps him occupied when we're in need of an activity.

Ask the Community - National Children's Museum

Is the national children's museum in do open in Nov 9th 2025?

    Yes, it's open.

Are a 14 and 12 year too old to enjoy the museum?

It's probably a lot less interesting to them. The best hope would be the hands on stuff with paper airplanes and air jets to hold basketballs, but even that is likely too young for them.

My son is 2 and has sensory issues and will not wear a mask. Will we not be allowed in because of this? Do we need to bring a doctors note?

Thank you so much for getting in touch. Please reach out to our team at guestservices@nationalchildrensmuseum.org to further discuss your request.

    Is it opening during pandemic?

My 2 year old especially liked the Paw Patrol section and honestly every other option they had for him, but especially the things where he could climb &/or slide.

I booked the option two party about three months in advance. What's great is that you just select a theme from the pictures they have they send you a digital invite to send out and as you get close to the party date, they'll confirm the theme and give you an idea of what the schedule is. That's it that's literally all you have to do. Honestly, if you were to just walk in the door without anything in hand other than a child, your 90 minute birthday party would go off without a hitch. They had the cupcakes, the utensils, the balloons, the beautiful room set up and they had the goodie bags. Honestly, a lot of the parents gave us a compliment on organizing the party and how much fun they had and I felt weird taking any credit for it. We had an assigned party planner that was very invested in making sure everything was running on time and that the room was set up perfectly to our needs. And at the end of the party, they packed everything up for you. What's wild is they actually packed everything back in the original containers organized and ready to go. And then these poor people had to re-organize all the toys that our party had demolished and dragged a different corners of the room all within 30 minutes. I hate planning, and hosting events gives me a lot of anxiety, so to have a party go off successfully with my minimal involvement is amazing.

First of all, the concept of a pretend Main Street USA with shops with all kinds of props and working cash registers with play money inside is brilliant. I remember playing pretend shop keeper with my brother and cousins as kids and we would have loved this place. Secondly, the place is very well maintained and has plenty of space for the more active kids to just run around from shop to shop. My wife loved it so much she booked one of their other locations for our son's birthday which is many months away.

The one in Severna Park is one of my favorites to take the kiddos because it has a great mix of interactive toys and buildings. Just to name a few: - an area for crafts - one of those motorized air funnels that you can put a scarf in - ice cream store - grocery store - doctor's office - vets office - a recycling truck with slots to sort different recyclables - a play house with kitchen stuff - pretend firetruck and firehouse with hose and slide You can also opt into extra add ons that allow you to participate in crafts you can take home (think DIY activities like slime). I like that there's only a finite number of spaces for time slots so it never gets too crowded. You should check their website before going just in case they're sold out (I believe they do allow walk ins though). They also have punch cards for a slightly discounted rate. It's usually around $18 for a single visit, but comes out to like $15 a visit with a punch card at the time of this post. I would totally recommend for little ones, but they may start to get bored for any ages 5 or older.

When we arrived, we were greeted with an easy check-in process. If you haven't signed the waiver online, you can quickly scan and sign it on-site. The staff was friendly and explained how everything worked. The space itself is fantastic! It's an open playground where kids can freely explore and play to their hearts' content. There are fun zones for every interest--a craft area near the cubbies, a science section by the check-in counter, and a little shop filled with books and small activities at the entrance. There's even a food token system: you drop the token off when you leave, and each kid gets a free snack, which is such a thoughtful touch. The restrooms are conveniently located at the back near the slide area, so everything you need is nearby. Overall, this is a well-organized, kid-friendly spot that offers so much for little ones to enjoy. We'll definitely be back!

This is hands down the cleanest indoor space we've been too and we've been to lots. The staff here were super friendly and regularly cleaning and putting things away. The play space has a town motif with a crafting and art area and then a vehicles, blocks, and dinosaur area. My daughter's favorite was the vet space, followed by the recycling truck. She spent a fair amount of time with the dinosaurs and at the grocery too. We never made it to the play areas on the left side. 90 minutes just really isn't enough time to cover it all if your little spends a long time in one area. I looked online to book play for another weekend and was shocked to see they only offer play 9-1030 on the weekends. I'm a working single mom, child in preschool, and we live in Springfield-essentially the weekend schedule means we won't be able to return without setting out super early. I love the imaginative play concept so I really hope they open a space closer to Fairfax or open up additional weekend play hours.
