AND WE WANTD THIS PLACE TO BE AMAZING. 1- Salmon dry 2-Saffron rice tasteless 3-Filet Mignon was... weird. Stringy and loose like a brisket? Bordelaise sauce bland. 4- Grilled asparagus, dry and tough. 5. Crème Brûlée... a runny cream. Lacked that custard texture. Actually watery. 6. Carrot cake was also a meh. Granted I've been a New Yorker 2x. But if you're even a little bit better than average out in the world beyond NYC, I will tell the world! I want everyone to be a 5 star restaurant and I judge low ratings more often than not. One more note. Don't ever put a makers mark sour and a gigantic water glass. It tells the patron a lot. French Restaurant in the middle of Eastern PA- unexpected. In fact, this is the second one to which we have gone in a 30 minute radius- we will not discuss the first- Golden Pheasant was quite a pleasant experience. First- the decor is open and airy in a rather idyllic setting- perhaps late 18th, early 19th century building? I don't recall the precise date. The southern dining room is well lit and sets betwixt a canal on the West and the Delaware River on the East. Both of which can easily be viewed- along with a public tow-path for the canal. Yes, there is outdoor seating. The wine list is what you would expect, and that is not so say anything denigrating. We went with a 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Cellier des Princes Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Chasse des Princes) - while a bit young, it was kept well, and went swimmingly with our lunch, nor was it overpriced. The food. Moules Marinières. C'est magnifique! Tender. Flavourful. Fresh (as best as one can be 90 minutes from the sea). The broth was exquisite- not overly salted, and very respectful of the Mussels- very traditional and well executed. I will certainly be back here. In fact, speaking with another well travelled Wine Enthusiast/Foodie semi-local at a wine bar about Golden Pheasant, he shared much the same sentiment. My husband was delayed traveling back from a business trip the weekend of Mother's Day so made a reservation for brunch the weekend after which worked out better anyway as my son could join. Charming was my initial impression. Had to start with French Onion soup as you just know this place knows how to make an excellent one & it was! The brunch was delicious, service outstanding, views of the Delaware canal & bike path on both sides were in full bloom. As it was also a few days before my birthday we decided to order dessert to celebrate. My son had the Lavender Crème Brûlée, and my husband & I shared the flourless chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. I almost didn't order because we were already full & usually a flourless cake means dense/heavy. This cake wasn't...at all! It was the lightest chocolate cake I've ever had without sacrificing on taste. It tasted of pure quality chocolate (said my husband who's from Europe) and I agreed. A very interesting as well as delicious menu for New Years Eve! The mind-blower of the night was the Potato Bisque. It was an outstanding mixture of Potato (duh. . .) Lobster, Avocado, Caviar, Cream and Crispy Onions. Absolutly Amazing. The French Onion Gratin was very good but not even close to the bisque. Both appetizers, Beef Carpaccio and Bacon Wrapped Dates (with Duck Confit) were delicious. The Pan Roasted Pheasant Breast with Himalayan Red Rice and Shallot Game reduction was both different and very enjoyable. And again in the different category was the Sweet Bread Stuffed Quail & Chestnut Ravioli. Delicious. Both the Blood Orange Olive Oil Cake and the Profiteroles with 3 different Ice Creams were a nice way to end our meal. We were in the room that was once the solarium and to our taste, the nicer of the 2 rooms. The whole establishment, including the bar, has a very comfortable, cozy feeling. The Wine prices are very reasonable. Our server Madison was well informed and fun to talk with during the night as were other staff members that we met. When you find a place that makes you forget everything else, provides a terrific meal with great employees, you have really found gold. Top that with the upper management being supportive and reactive if you need to speak with them and you want to share that with anyone who wants to listen. The leadership addressed an issue with the kind of response that I have not seen in many years. It was refreshing, to say the least. You won't go wrong. I have to return to this place bcz it near my relatives but the service is not up to par They don't offer craft cocktails ( although thier prices are certainly as high as any craft cocktail bar in NYC) and if you ask your server they will act like you are bothering them. They supposedly have a full bar but will only make a drink w 2 ingredients. Once I got them to make a margarita. It's really disappointing bcz this could be a place to go for a special meal and for us alcoholics, having a good cocktail is a treat for a nice event. The Golden Pheasant Inn is probably the most beautiful Inn in the area inside and out. It is nestled in between the Delaware River and the canal, so from both sides of the restaurant is a water view. The Inn features the old historic building with stone walls and fireplace for dining on one side and a solarium type, mostly glass dining room with a beautiful fireplace on the other side. In between the dining rooms is an upscale bar just at the cozy right size. Truly a beautiful place and well kept but alas, the food has dropped off over the years and you can't eat the environment. This is a rather pricey establishment and our last visit for dinner was disappointing, four out of five of us did not like their meals. We had a pleasant experience dining in this past weekend. We were initially seated in the green house thing, but after the first 10 minutes of our conversations were just a bunch of, "what's?" And "huh's?" We asked to be moved. Initially the hostess said we couldn't move due to a full house, but our sweet waitress made it happen; we were able to move into the much quieter dining room after our apps. The food itself was really awesome. The scallop dish came with three scallops, but they were actually the biggest scallops we have ever seen and were paired with great risotto and a puréed root veggie. The shrimp bisque (a special) was also super. We were stuffed but still got dessert, which wasn't as good as the regular food. By far though, the experience was totally elevated by our great server. We unfortunately didn't catch her name; she went above and beyond and was so kind. My dad called to increase her tip to over 20% after we got home because she was that great. read more

The place is beautiful. This is our first time coming since the Thompson family took it over. The service was friendly and attentive. We were seated in the windowed atrium type addition with a nice view of the canal (opposite road side). The cocktails are delicious. I didnt love that they don't use luxardo cherries, but they use some other type which mixes well with the Old Fashioned I ordered. The pomegranate spritzer seems popular as ours was among many we saw in the dining room. We tried a variety of soups and apps. The French Onion was a deeply flavored rich broth topped with the ubiquitous gruyere. Their topping was just the right amount. Not too much to make a gummy mess, and not too little. The cheese also had a slightly sourness that was a good compliment to the rich soup and onions. The potato leek soup was also good, although not as pretty as we would have hoped. (could have used a nice swirl of cream or cream fraiche). The lyonnaise salad was great. Crisp frisee with crispy diced potatoes, bacon lardon, and a nice dressing all brought together with a poached egg. This was a highlight and gave me flashbacks of Brassiere Perriers in the late 90s. The crispy pork belly app was good. The accompanying sauce could have used a little more flavor (either tangy or sweet). The pheasant pate was a delight. I absolutely love pate served in this fashion (sliced from a terrine). The terrine had pistachios and other bits of things that make a terrine delicious including a thin wrapping of aspic/fat. The yummy condiments that come with a traditional terrine were also good. The cornichons, the high quality whole grain mustard, and toasted buttered baguette discs were spot on. The wild mushroom baclava was different. This take on a classic mushroom puff pastry tart was probably our least favorite. The baclava retained the sweetness of a dessert baclava with mushrooms (mostlylooked like shiitake. I could not make out any Champagne mushrooms or any other classic french wild mushrooms). IMO, this dish tries too hard. I would have preferred a more classic mushroom tart, the baclava was a little too delicate for the larger mushroom pieces. The roasted duck breast entree was good. The wehani rice is a chewy full of flavor brown rice. The roasted root vegetables including pumpkin were wonderful. The only misstep here were the brussel sprouts. I'm not sure if it was this batch or what, but they were bitter with a very off putting taste. Otherwise, the rest of the plate was nice. I had the wild boar chop special. The chef recommended that the 2 double chops be served medium rare which I agree with. Unfortunately, mine came out as more medium (slightly pink and warm) vs medium rare. While not ideal, the chop was still enjoyable. The scalloped potatoes were good as well, although like the potato leek soup, had a color that was not attractive in appearance. I would have loved if it was more like a gratin dauphinois, but it was fine. The slight vanilla flavor was complimentary much to my surprise. The braised onion base under the chops could have been subtracted. We had the butterscotch pot de creme as a dessert. This was delicious and it came with buckwheat hubbards, kind of like a shortbread cookie. This was really good. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Golden Pheasant. Like another reviewer said, almost every single dish is UNDER seasoned. If you are used to aggressive seasoning of salt and pepper, you may find the food here a little bland. For me, it's a little underseasoned, but I can appreciate that this might be deliberate to have guests enjoy the higher end ingredients that are carefully used in their food. Plus, aggressively seasoned food can interfere with wine pairings..so there's that consideration too. Recommend. read more

Sorry to do this but I have no choice. Stopped in for the first time tonight. I was flying solo without a reservation. Walked in and explained I just wanted a cocktail on the patio and I totally understood if they couldn't accommodate me. I was told, no, of course we can accommodate you. Have a seat and someone will be right with you. Went out to the patio, where I was THE ONLY one there and sat for a full 25 minutes. No one came out. I finally realized they didn't want my measly business and left. It would have been so much better had the hostess just said, sorry, we can't do it. I just wanted a drink and to watch the river. I got to watch the river for 25 minutes and left thirsty. It should be noted that I then went to The Narrows where they were happy to accommodate me and take my money and guess what? I was able to watch the river and feel like my business was valuable. I won't be back here and I suspect they won't miss me one bit. read more

Great spot to hit on a cold winter drive through the country. The ambience is warm, cozy, and inviting. We were recently driving up River Road on a cold winter day. We stopped in for a quite bite to eat and we were not disappointed. I ordered French onion soup followed by blackberry avocado toast and my friend ordered the duck eggs Benedict. The soup was a sweeter broth than the savory I was craving, but the cheese was heavenly! Tasted like a wonderful Gruyère! The blackberry Brie avocado toast was off the charts delicious and fresh. Highly recommend. The duck dish was terrific and perfect for duck lovers! I enjoyed some champagne with my meal and it was terrific. The bartender was friendly and attentive. We were so looking forward to this experience. Beautiful venue. When I asked about a particular dish, the server borrowed my menu and read the description to me. Our dinners were served 2 minutes after our appetizer plates were cleared. We were hoping for a relaxing dinner, not a quick trip to McDonald's. Both dinners were served cold. To the Inn's benefit, both dinners were remade, not warmed up and very good. No apologies from the staff. They seemed annoyed. My suggestion, offer the customer a complimentary dessert or something similar in these situations. read more

We went for a wine tasting prix fix dinner last night featuring wines from Spain and Portugal. The wines and education were magnificent. The service was excellent. The food was terrible. The first course was a potato fish cake and I couldn't find the fish or taste it. The middle was cold and it was basically a glob of loose mashed potatoes. The sauce gave it a little flavor. The paella was horrible! Mushy rice mixed with undercooked rice. Flavorless. Completely overdone seafood like eating an eraser. Many of us had unopened clams and mussels. I couldn't eat it. We had a wonderful time at dinner. The ambiance both inside and outside is what really makes The Golden Pheasant worth visiting. It's nice to sit outside along the canal or on the front patio. The service is top-notch! Both the bartender and our server were simply wonderful, not a single detail was missed. As for the food, the French Onion Soup is absolutely divine! Very rich, flavorful broth that almost tastes like a sauce. Hands down my favorite thing on the menu. Another wonderful thing were the biscuits and butter topped with black salt. Melt in your mouth and oh so tasty. My date ordered the Steak Frites and enjoyed it (his fries were awesome!). I ordered the Roasted Duck Breast. The cherry sauce and spinach were tasty, but the duck was quite chewy (more so than usual for duck). The previous owners did a fantastic duck dish with a lingonberry sauce that I really miss :( They also used to have fabulous escargot prepared in a traditional French style in the escargot pots. I really wish they would bring these old recipes back. I recommend the Golden Pheasant Bellini (Prosecco, St. Germaine, Peach Purée) and the French Blonde (Grapefruit Vodka, Lillet, Grapefruit Juice) for drinks. Perfect for summer! Another thing that has changed is unfortunately dogs are no longer allowed to sit outside. I had been coming here for years with my dog before the restaurant changed ownership. I hesitate to recommend a place with a 5 star review on one visit but... the Golden Pheasant is so good, it easily earns high marks. Our fussy Ferrari Club diners all raved about the lunch fare. They raved about the salmon and perfectly cooked potatoes. I had chicken and beef and, actually true, sent word to the chef that the beef was the best I've had since visiting beef central, Omaha! In fact, I'm going back for brunch with my wife very soon. Beautiful riverside location. Classy decor. Fussy, professional and well trained staff. Gourmet food, expertly cooked. It's all good. Charlie was our server and he was fantastic! He didn't miss a beat and wasn't the slightest perturbed by my in laws making up drinks that aren't on the menu! "I've never made one but I'll try!" We are on the back patio on a perfectly temperate day. You are right next to the water and people/dogs/bikes pass by on the trail. If you have kids do be sure to keep them in their seats. It would be pretty easy for them to get to the trail from the patio. Now on to the food! We got the vegetables on toast to share. That was really good. For the main course I had the crab cake burger. This was one of the best meals I've had in a while. My wife got the crab cake Benedict. This I should note did not come with an English muffin or any bread. The breading is in the crab cake. If you must have bread get the regular Benny. After that we were still feeling frisky so I got vanilla ice cream with caramel and peanuts. It comes topped with a waffle cone. If you know anything about me you know I'm a waffle cone guy. I get everything in a waffle cone. The cone makes the cream. Anyway I wish this place was so far away. Big fan of oysters and I have to say they were some of the best ones I've had in awhile. Also had the french onion soup and as a person Gluten free normally I hold off on the bread but they are so accommodating and were able to use Gluten free bread for my soup which i've never experienced before!! Walked into the restaurant with my family and had multiple staff walk by us without a smile or hello. A woman finally came over to ask for our reservation (which we provided) and she looked miserable (as if we were annoying her by simply standing there). Sat outside along the canal but the grasses, etc. are obviously not mowed or kept well (at least not on that day). The whole dinner experience took up 3 hours of our time (slow wait staff, food was less than average, drinks took FOREVER to come). Not wasting my time here again when there are much better options that appreciate customers and care about quality of food AND service. read more

I came here on a Saturday and from start to finish everything was great. I've had some misses recently on restaurants, but this was an exceptional experience. We were seating in the large room with the big windows. The location of this restaurant is just stunning. View of the river from one side and the canal on the other. The ambiance is great here. They had a special drink and dessert menu for Breast Cancer Awareness month, which we happily supported. I got the oysters to start, incredible and the scallops as my meal. Nice mix of horseradish and black pepper and hot sauce. My mouth is watering just describing it. I started with the vegan lentil soup. I'm a fan of lentil soup, but in this case, when you leave out animal fats, you need to supplement that with additional seasoning. It was bland. The mushroom omelet saved it. A nice earthy blend of flavorful mushrooms topped with melted Swiss under a very well seasoned omelet. Served with fruit and fried rosemary potatoes. Perfect size and taste. My wife ordered the Grand Marnier French toast. Made w/challah bread and just a hint of grand Marnier orangy liquor. Served with fresh whipped cream, maple syrup and potatoes and fruit. Nice and crispy and buttery w/that orange flavor. Order this if you like sweet. We ordered the chocolate raspberry cake and lemon torte for dessert. Both very good, but not earth shattering.
