Charming Place, earnest staff, very very old. Lots of period pieces inside this throw back in time. But, the place is much too crowded with antiquities. I would take out about a third of the antiques in our suite, to make the room more functional. The floor is rather lumpy, but I know that has to do with the age of the building. It would be nice if they served coffee early because they don't serve breakfast until 8:30. You can't adjust the thermostat, and that is hard for somebody who is lean like I am. 70° is a little chilly. I think they should take their prices down about a third and they probably be more fully occupied. But it's a cute place with a lot of history. People expect a lot more when they travel, and to have glitches like this makes it problematic. But it's always find a new meet new people when we travel. read more

I cannot recommend this B&B enough. My mother and I spent a few nights here, and it was perfection. I stayed in the Gorham room which was spacious and bright. She stayed in the Comstock room which was much more intimate, but it was also lovely with a beautiful four poster bed. I was able to tour most of the other rooms as well, and I adored the personality that each room had with its decor. This building was built in 1835 and has undergone many changes before being bought in 1976 and turned into a B&B. You can see and feel the history within these walls. From being a part of the Underground Railroad to a Prohibition Speakeasy, you could spend a whole day reading and exploring all the history of this place. We really loved the bright and airy dining room where we played cards during most of our visit. The breakfast each morning was tasty (especially their signature strata and made-to-order waffles). In the afternoon, they set up a tea service with cookies. In the evenings, they pop fresh popcorn for your enjoyment. The location is great as you are a very short walk (or minuscule drive) from the restaurants and shops of downtown Marshall. If you are looking for modern, swanky accommodations, this may not be the place for you. But we absolutely adored the Victorian look and home-like feel. Honestly, the BEST part of the B&B is their incredible staff. We were only there for two nights, but I swear, the staff members all felt like treasured friends even though we just met them. We had the loveliest conversations with several of them, and I honestly can't wait to return so I can chat with them again! read more

The National House Inn is a Bed and Breakfast hotel in Historic Marshall, Michigan. It is on the southwest side on the fountain circle and is easily reached from the intersection of highways I-69 and I-94. Each of the rooms is named after a notable person in the history of Calhoun County (Marshall is the Calhoun County seat). There is a short biography of the person that the room is named after posted outside of the room. We found out later that the room we had chosen is said to be haunted! (See "The Lady In Red") However, we were unaware of any supernatural activity during our stay. The National House has a small private lot, but on-street parking in the nearby residential area is available. Many B&B establishments that I have stayed with take great care to assure that their rooms are well decorated and comfortable but in many cases the "breakfast" is somewhat of an afterthought. This is certainly not the case at the National House; the innkeepers do an equally wonderful job of presenting tasty and healthy breakfast choices for their guests. The breakfast items are offered buffet style- and because of this some offerings on that day's bill of fare might be "popular" and as such not available for late-risers. I would say that setting your alarm for an early wake-up is certainly a small price to pay for the delightful treats that are served each morning to guests at the National House Inn. Just steps from the Inn are the popular Mansion Street historic district, and the Honolulu House, which was constructed in 1860. The Honolulu House was converted into a historic museum in 1962; I feel it is particularly fun to visit during the Christmas Holidays or during the annual Historic Homes Candlelight walk. If you can possibly afford the time during your visit to Marshall, I'd strongly advise a stroll down Mansion Street or through the historic downtown area. Driving through just doesn't give you the same feeling as walking and also being able to stop and enjoy the details of the beautiful buildings. I was pleased to learn that the innkeepers are more than happy to help with dinner reservations to the nearby Win Schuler's Restaurant and Pub. If it is at all possible for you to dine, or have Sunday brunch at Schuler's during your stay- I'd certainly encourage you to do so... but that information correctly belongs in another review! The National House has a very well designed website that has helpful photos of the rooms offered as well as a complete description of the features of each room. A small negative is that their website does not offer online booking so you must phone to make your reservations. If you are planning a trip to Southwest Michigan- I'd strongly encourage you to visit Marshall and at least stop by the National House Inn to savor it's peaceful charm and comfort. read more

What a great place! It's beautiful inside and out, very walkable down town with lots of interesting stores,bars and restaurants. The staff is incredible, everyone was so nice and met any need we could have possibly had. The breakfast was lovely and it was the best quiche I've ever eaten. We will be back for sure. read more

The initial impression is of a worn out building, well past its prime, and the feeling of neglect and cutting corners continues inside. The phony Victoriana decor, the cheap bedding and paper thin towels. The room was cold and the period electric fire hardly had any effect. The bed was torture, from the groove in the mattress to the cheap pillows. Comfort has no place in this description. And breakfast - be there between 8.30 and 9.30 or forget it. How about a cold boiled egg? Of course. Some nice hot bacon and eggs? Forget it! The only reason to choose a place like this is to enjoy the experience which is why it's such a disappointment. Hospitality is about a warm welcome, comfort, and a feeling good to be there. You can get a bad night's sleep in the cold anywhere, and not have to pay close to $200 for the pleasure! The National House Inn in Marshall has all the old world charm of a very nice B&B. Admittedly, this is run more like a business than like staying in someone's home. There were many staff that we ran into during our one night's stay (we had wanted to stay longer and they did not get back to us regarding an opening, so they found us a room at The Way Inn down the street). It was an overbooking situation on their part. The home itself was period and there were many vintage touches. We had the room on the ground floor which was ideal. There was a separate sitting area and 1.5 baths adjoining the room. However, the room was rather dark. They didn't have the best towels and the bath was not the cleanest, but it was good enough for a night's stay. The breakfast consisted of a quiche, fruits, breads, hard boiled eggs, juice and coffee. It was rather "continental" compared to The Way Inn. For some, this would be enough for a quick bite. But it was nothing to write home about. The staff were friendly and there was certainly a homey feeling. The home felt really dark inside though. Lots of parking in the front of the home. Also, it was nicely decorated for fall. read more

This Inn is starting to be the greatest place on earth to me. Second stay was better than the first, and I didn't think that was possible. We were here for our anniversary this weekend (and my birthday last November). They provided us with everything we needed to have a fantastic Anniversary night. If you love amazing staff? Stay here! If you love history? Stay here! If you love spooky/paranormal? Stay here! Small quaint town with walkable restaurants of every kind? Stay here. I only give them a 5 because there is no 6. Stay Here! I was delighted to find National House Inn while I was planning a trip to visit Dark Horse Brewing. It is less than a half mile away! I like bed and breakfast places. They are a nice change from the chain hotels. National House is the biggest one that I have ever stayed at. I think they have about 15 rooms. No one was checked in when we arrived, so we looked at all of the rooms on a self guided tour. They vary from tiny with two twin beds to huge with a clawfoot tub bathroom and a private sitting room. My room, the Crary, was in the middle range with a queen bed and small private bath. It was plenty of room for me. On the technology front. My room contained the tiniest TV that I have ever seen. I believe it was 15". It is like watching a laptop from across the room. This was really obvious to me as I was actually using my laptop so the comparison was right there in front of me. TV is not super important to me, but I will watch if it is available. In this situation, I didn't bother after the first try. Free wi-fi is available with no password. The signal was weak for my phone, but my laptop was able to get a strong signal. This allowed me to take some notes for my Yelp review. The mattress was a bit firmer than I prefer, but it didn't hamper my sleeping. I realize that it is difficult to please everyone in this respect. What did hamper my sleeping were a variety of small things that added up to irritation... There is a big church clock chiming somewhere in town. Of course it chimes out the hour count, but it also makes noise on the quarter hour too. I believe it was off between 11PM and 6:59AM, but I did not welcome the 7AM wake-up from it. This is not the fault of my inn keeper, but I do want to let everyone know about it. The National House is located directly on the main traffic circle which is used by every vehicle going through Marshall. Combine that with the fact that people in Michigan don't seem overly concerned with muffler maintenance and it makes for a near constant rumble as the cars move in and out of the circle. Luckily, the traffic is very light in the middle of the night, so it didn't bother my sleep then, but it does start up pretty early. I think I would prefer a room on the back of the house next time. Sleeping in is doomed to failure. Beyond the clock bells and the traffic, my next challenge was my fellow travelers. Creaky floor boards are to be expected in an old building, but early risers can drive you mad with all their walking around. It was as if the boards in my room were actually creaking when someone walked around anywhere on my floor. I could not sleep through that. So it was time for breakfast. It is served in a dining room with about 5 tables. There was one other couple sitting at a two person table, so we sat at another table. Barbara had prepared a tasty, but cold quiche and some lemon poppy seed bread. After getting us started with coffee, she cooked up a fresh waffle with blueberries for us. Beyond that, breakfast was mostly self serve. It was good food, but nothing stood out. The National House Inn is a solid performer, doing some things right with room for improvement on others. I would normally give this a three star rating, but then I have to factor in the primary goal of my visit to Marshall. I was able to walk to Dark Horse, sample all of their beers over the course of many hours and then walk back to National House. This earns them a fourth star and it is the reason that I will stay here again the next time I am in Marshall. read more

What a positively charming inn! Everyone on the staff is so friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and well-appointed. There are so many lovely sitting areas both inside and out. Our room had a beautiful view overlooking the fountain. We liked that the dining room had individual tables rather than one large dining table. It was cozy enough to be able to converse with other guests, but separate enough to still have privacy. The breakfast quiche was fabulous! This was a great value for the price. After having stayed at the National House Inn a few times this summer of 2019, I was overall satisfied in terms of comfort and a general sense of experience. The majority of the staff were quite delightful and didn't skip a beat when it came to answering questions, requests or simply having a conversation. The inn is rather delightful, certainly dated and somewhat negatively so in terms of modern methods of business. It was my intent to stay in every room at the Inn this summer as I am visiting Michigan until October. However, during my last stay here a number of concerns arose. When I went to finally relax for the evening, our air conditioning was not on and the room was dreadfully humid and hot. I notified the front desk and she used a makeshift tool to try to get the AC to properly run again. It worked for a short period then soon after stopped and it became unbearably dreadful in the room. We were sweating! After notifying the front desk for a second time, we were given two small fans to use instead of the AC. Soon after this, and as the situation had not been at all resolved. I was forced to leave as I could not bare the heat. I was told to call "Barbara" to have the situation remedied. The entirety of this situation took place only over about 2 hours. Upon calling Barbara, I notified her that the AC was not working properly and that it seemed broken. She told me it was not broken and that since I stayed there for a moment she could only give half of the cost back in return. I didn't argue this with her due to the simple fact that as a business owner and professional, My standards are where they should be in terms of client relations and customer care. I will not return to this Inn; as a guest whom stayed multiple times and then experienced this, it was obvious while talking to Barbara that their concern simply was for themselves. Instead of me returning at least another 3-4 times as I would have before summers end, she chose to very selfishly and unprofessionally deny a full refund. The money isn't an issue in this, though the mentality behind it is where my concern and disgust lies. Instead of a rather large profit they could have made off of me with my intent to return again, they exhibited behaviour of which will keep me from returning entirely. read more

This place is my fav B&B hands down. We went here for our honeymoon for just a couple days. We were in the Ketchum room and boy was it beautiful. Not only is the room amazing but the ladies there are just so sweet and make you feel very welcome. I'm sure everyone has said you have to try the quiche for breakfast, it was one of my fav things about breakfast. The women there also gave us great suggestions for what to do during the day. They also have tea supplies out around the clock and fresh popcorn at night. I loved taking some tea or coffee and sitting on one of their porches. It's just so relaxing there and it was just what me and my husband needed after our big wedding weekend. read more

We've done several "beer trips" to Michigan and always try to include Dark Horse. The National House Inn is within walking distance from Dark Horse and is an amazing place. Though an old historic building, it's very clean with beautifully decorated rooms (more stylish and chic than the "country" feel that a lot of B&Bs have). My only negative is that the coffee and breakfast could be better (usually there's a quiche or frittata, toast, waffles, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, etc., but it's not great quality). read more

A thousand stars isn't even enough! This B&B is AMAZING. We live in town and we still find ourselves staying an evening as a treat. Beautiful Victorian atmosphere. The bedrooms are fabulous and the Breakfast is to die for. I love tea time as much as breakfast. The service is top notch ! I just cant say enough about this Inn, I recommend everyone stay here at least once in their lifetime! read more
