When I'm craving to a late-night burger, I go to Nation's. I go this Nation's a few times a month to get either a hamburger or cheeseburger with fries. Both burgers always taste juicy and satisfying, while the fries are nice and crisp. As for the restaurant, it's nice, clean and big. There is plenty of seating available. The staff is also nice and quick. They ring up my order accurately and quickly, and don't usually have to wait long for my order. This Nation's will continue to be my top late-night spot. read more

Terrible service! There are no servers, if you dine in your order is called out like at McDonalds and you pick it up. The fries are very bland and no salt or ketchup is offered. Long lines just to sit in a booth and wait 20 mins until your number is called. Will never try Nation's again, the definition of "nothing to write home about". read more

I was purchasing pies for a party and when I asked her what were the flavors, since not all of them had signs, she seemed very annoyed and just said "we have pies and cheesecake, which one do you want?" I responded, "well it depends what flavors they are." They she rolled her eyes. I didn't want to make a big scene and just said, "give me the apple pie." Then I bought a homeless man some breakfast and she seemed so unhappy that I paid for it. Well Maria, if you were nice to your customers then I may have paid for your meal too, but not with that attitude. She seemed like she was so unhappy working there or maybe she doesn't like to deal with customers and would rather work in the back. Either way, she killed the experience. I've been going to Nations since I was a kid but haven't been in some time since I've moved away. I went recently and the service was great. They greeted us fairly soon after entering and were nice. The burger was good, but the fries were amazing. They are different from the fatter ones they used to serve and are up there with fresh McDonalds fries. If I'm getting closer to my goal of visiting every location of Nation's Giant Hamburgers in the Bay Area, then this location in downtown Berkeley may very well be the nicest location of them all. Located on the corner of University Avenue and Grant Street, what sets this location of Nation's Giant Hamburgers apart from all of their other locations throughout Northern California, is this location has the owner's surname of Power's on top of not only the side of the restaurant but its signage as well. Dale Power became a partner with founder Russ Harvey, and once they opened their location in Jack London Square in Oakland, they rechristened themselves to what they are known today: Nation's Giant Hamburgers. Since 1952, Nation's has been best known for their big breakfast plates, freshly grilled giant hamburgers and homemade pies and being open for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday, 365 days a year! If my peculiar goal is to get to all Nation's locations and compare and contrast them because that is totally doable as there a little under thirty locations region-wide, then this location in Berkeley just might be their best one yet, as the exterior is filled with glass panels that gives the impression of a clean finish, which is only accentuated by their interior which has a more dark wooden finish in comparison to their other locations which are more diner like interior-wise. Another reason that I came to this location of Nation's Giant Hamburgers, was I was in neighborhood running some errands and I made sure to bring the coupon that Nation's mails to households every three months or so that gives diners a coupon that allows us to Buy One Menu Item, get the same or lesser priced menu item for only a dollar. Now this coupon they once mailed use to be a Buy One Get One Free coupon not even one year ago, so there is some consternation in my mind if I want to still participate in this noteworthy deal. Then again, I consider the solid not to mention large burgers and sandwiches that Nation's Giant Hamburgers has offered up for almost seventy years and counting, well then it always keeps me coming back for more. Getting to this location via Interstate 80 and the University Avenue exit is super easy, and the fact that this is one of the few restaurants in this area of Berkeley that has ample parking is always a plus. Since I was in Berkeley and stepping outside my comfort zone, instead of their Hamburgers, I decided to order two of their Wild Alaska Salmon Burgers with my Buy One Get One for a Dollar coupon, plus with added Grilled Onions at no additional cost, along with a leaf of iceberg lettuce, two tomato slices all served on a sesame seed bun, this was enough of a meal for myself and my friend. I also wanted to order a side of onion rings, but unfortunately they were out this afternoon, so I had to suffice with an order of French Fries. And for good measure, I ordered a slice of their Chocolate Crème Pie, as they are freshly made in nearby El Cerrito, California and trucked in every morning. My total bill was less than 20 dollars plus tax, which was very reasonable. Since cooking my meal to order took some time, I decided to take a brisk walk around the neighborhood taking in all of the sights and sounds of the bustling area which even after all we have been through after all of these years, University Avenue is still teeming with activity. Upon my return to pick up my meal, it was ready to be picked up. I was disappointed that they seemed to be understaffed at the time I went, as there were no packets of ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise within my takeout bag, but I was enjoying this lunchtime meal to-go so it really didn't matter. Upon returning home, our fish sandwiches were so large we easily could have cut each burger in half and saved the other half for another day, but it was a complete meal and I was very happy about that. The salmon patty was more than likely a frozen patty grilled on their griddle, but still tasted pretty solid considering the amount we paid for both it and the second salmon burger. And of course nothing beats the creaminess of their legendary crème pies, as I think I could eat a whole pie on my own, guilt-free. This location of Nation's Giant Hamburgers does only allow complimentary cups of water for those dining indoors, as most people I saw on the afternoon I went were opting for takeout dining. But here's to Nation's Giant Hamburgers still having this nice location in such a busy area of Berkeley, on the eve of your may your burger dynasty's seventieth birthday, may your reign continue for another successful seven decades. Terrible take out experience. Ordered and paid for 2 pies online. They charged me and when o show up to pickup they don't have my order. Then I see an email 2 minutes before I got there saying there's a problem with my order and they are canceling and I need to pay while waiting for a credit. Doesn't make sense that they canfail me my order is cancelled but not sned the order to the store instead. Very shady experience, this may be the end of a long run of ordering holiday pies from this place, the service was so bad, gilr couldn't be bothered to explain what was going on, she said they were slammed, but they weren't. Horrible time, just got there no one in line, looking at the menu while the cashier is on the phone, as soon as she got off the phone some guy comes behind me and she says "what can I get for u while looking at him" he told me that he was there before me but when I got there there was no one in line! My go-to is their cheeseburger with grilled onion and pickles...yum! While I love their burgers, the fries are a hit or miss depending on whether or not you get a fresh batch. The Cheese Burger was stack high as I expected and their Fries were nicely and evenly salted just perfect! For the amount of food you get, prices are very reasonable and preparation is surprisingly great. Food was served piping hot and fresh. When we got there there was a short line and everyone seemed extremely high. I got the chili cheese fries. They were hot when my number was called and I burned my mouth on the first few due to impatience. The rest were good but the cheese was not that melted so it tended to stick together and you would get a big bite of just chili and then a big bit of mostly cheese. My friend got the cheeseburger and fries.his food was served hot as well. His food order came late, so they gave him a complimentary soda. My second friend who is my cousin also got the chili cheese fries. He said they were clearly just your run of the mill fries, some canned chili from the super market, and two semi-melted Kraft singles. About halfway through our meal, a man with very long hair began having a schizophrenic episode next to us which he tried to smooth over by stating that he owned a similar sweatshirt to me.
