We secured whole pet/whole life + wellness insurance for our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Nigel, when he was a puppy, and the coverage was pretty comprehensive and extremely useful until the end of this past year, with reimbursements being quickly mailed to us. Our dog is now almost 11, and we recently filed a claim via the website/app, as always. We then received a mailing saying that this policy was "no longer active," with no explanatory details. My husband had originally acquired this policy, which was supposed to be lifelong insurance for our pup, while working for a different company a decade ago (through his work benefits package). Thoroughly confused, he called Nationwide and was informed that the credit card on file for the automatic insurance payments we had been making on time FOR A DECADE had expired, and, without our knowledge, the policy had been cancelled and could no longer be restored (they wouldn't even allow us to put a new credit card on file and retroactively pay for the month or two when they had attempted to charge the expired card). They apparently notified us only via my husband's work email from the job he had a decade ago, which he obviously no longer has access to. Although they had our physical mailing address and frequently sent us reimbursement checks in the mail, they never sent us a physical letter informing us of the credit card issue, so we had no way of knowing. Now, our senior pet who has some preexisting back issues has no way of being insured in a way that would actually cover any of his medical costs, even though we had done everything we could to make sure he was going to be insured for life. We are extremely unhappy with Nationwide's lack of notification and unjust cancellation of our policy, which seems dishonest. Had he been a younger pet for whom they didn't anticipate increasing medical costs, I wonder if they would have reached out by mail to inform us of the credit card issue when they were unable to reach us via the old email address? It's distressing that, when we had diligently paid our premium since 2015, they would not let us reinstate our policy by paying the month or two for which our credit card on file, unbeknownst to us, had expired. Just really disappointing, and I hate knowing that my sweet pup will now have the least insurance coverage (none) he has ever had in his life just at the age when he will need it most. After being quite please with it for years, we are now extremely dissatisfied with Nationwide Pet Insurance and would welcome outreach from the company to reinstate our policy when it was unjustly cancelled; restore our faith in this company; and help us make sure our pet can have all the medical care he may need in his old age. read more

There are many better options available with significantly stronger coverage. My 6-year-old cat was recently diagnosed with cancer. While this plan reimburses 70% of eligible expenses, the annual reimbursement cap is only $7,500. Unfortunately, that amount does not go very far when chemotherapy treatments can easily exceed $20,000. Since then, I've seen many other plans offering 90% reimbursement and annual limits as high as $100,000. My advice to anyone considering pet insurance is to carefully compare plans before committing. After 8+ years of paying into my pets high premiums with at least 35% increase each year for the last few years, they have decided to downgrade my coverage to the bare minimum. The new plan is significantly less than what I had previously but the premium remains high. The process was a nightmare, requiring me to resend records repeatedly and document their shifting narratives. Ultimately, Nationwide denied the claim by retroactively adding "weight loss" and "stomatitis' as a pre-existing condition to link it to the hypercalcemia. When I asked how minor weight fluctuation and a misdiagnosis justifies denying an unrelated condition, they essentially confirmed they can exclude whatever they choose. Here is my review and appreicate you reading even if you dont reply back have been a member with Nationwide pet insurance when it used to be VPI pet insurance. I had a plan that was grandfathered in which was 90% covered with no CAP (this means no matter the treatment they covered the full cost) They tried to push me out by raising the cost the that plan year after year so I played ball with them and dropped it down to 70% covered with no CAP. They always stress to insure the animal since they were a puppy or kitten so everything can be covered through their life without any exempt. So this year they decided to write me that they are canceling my policy becuase the cost to them are too high to cover his plan even though they havent offered this plan in over 7 years and I was grandfathered in. I was told they will move me to the 70% plan and a 10k cap so if my animals has any thing serious over 10k i had to put the money up. Or other wise I can go kick rocks. Even though I have been paying over 10 years of premiums for 4 animals and they were so selfesh and couldnt wait maybe another 5 years until all the grandfathered customer fur babies passed and crossed the rainbow bridge. Instead this $60.3 billion dollar in sales for 2024 company decided to be selfish and not cover and honor the pet plans they gave customers. I have had Nationwide for over a decade. My pomeranian will be 13 in September- If he makes it. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure at the beginning of 2025. His six medications are now at $300. Per month. For the last several months Nationwide has paid zero. Z150 excuse you know- your pet has exceeded the limitations in the policy. At $210. Per month for Nationwide pet insurance, what am i paying for? A cytopoint shot now and then? I hasten to add: my dog needs these medications to stay alive. Nationwide also paid less than half of his total cardiac workup, echocardiogram, doppler, blood pressure and blood work and 2 follow up appointments doctors said he needed back in March.(with a prominent Southern California cardiology firm.) My premiums have gone up EVERY year since my dog was a puppy. What a surprise that was- even in some years where there were few or no claims. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A YEAR IN WHICH NATIONWIDE PAID OUT MORE THAN I PAID IN. They have made money on me since 2013. Now that my priceless companion is failing, NATIONWIDE is not there for him. Garbage... Am I allowed to say garbage? There are worse adjectives for what I experienced. Every claim for each of my two dogs was immediately (within a day) denied. They chose a couple of line items and said because they were pre-existing conditions, my claim was denied. Now if you go to a vet these days or God forbid, an emergency clinic, the charges can go up to 3-4K a night. By the end if a three day stay you can go out paying 10k. I paid a premium of over $400/mth for my 12 yr old cat which is very expensive but worth it when and if we have to go for a gastro check up which cost around 2k. Anyway, it feels the pet parents are getting screwed from both insurance companies as well as Vetinary services so our only choice is to get insurance. The rep told me that this is the cap for the skin cancer, even the bill is over ten thousands dollars, the cap was still $630.00. My month premium is about $160.00. Why I am paying for the insurance. Horrible pet insurance company. I got medical insurance through them for my cat four years ago. My cat suffered a broken tail two years ago and her tail had to get amputated. Since then, she's become somewhat of an "expensive" cat, medically speaking (incontinence combined with constipation). Nationwide just informed me that they're quadrupling my premium, based on the insurance claims I had to submit to them last year. My monthly premium will go from $46 to $190. Is that even legal? The point of buying insurance is to get covered if and when you unfortunately get in trouble, not to have your rate quadrupled once you do, so the insurer can cover its bottom line. I just told them I couldn't afford the renew my policy, and the rep seemed almost thrilled to be able to drop my cat. To all the other customers who have seen record high rate increases with no warning: I encourage you to file a complaint with your state insurance department. (Ex. California Department of Insurance at insurance.ca.gov). Absolutely do not waste your time with Nationwide Pet Insurance. Unfortunately, my latest renewal increase is the last straw, and I am leaving Nationwide Pet Insurance for good. They felt it was reasonable to increase the rate for one of my cats from $536.21 to $995.88/year (an 86% increase), and increase the rate for my second cat from $806.60 to $2,080.65/year (a 160% increase). No, that is not a typo. There was no conversation. No warning. No explanation. Nothing. Just a sudden and enormous charge on my credit card, prompting me to call their Customer Experience line to confirm if this was some kind of clerical mistake (it wasn't). Then, Nationwide decided they didn't want to operate in Florida anymore because it's too expensive for this huge corporation. Beware, do not sign up for this insurance because they just might decide your state is too expensive next and your pet's most important conditions won't be covered. Adding insult to injury, they denied my final claims. The plans listed an effective date through the 2nd. "January 2nd" is the date listed everywhere on the app and on the website. One cat was due for his one month follow up after radioactive iodine treatment and the other was due for his 6 month recheck of his kidney values, so I took them both on the 2nd. Guess what - both claims were denied by Nationwide who now states that actually January 1st is the last day of the policy because January 2nd they're no longer effective. If that's the case, the website and app should say January 1st! Every expiration date I've ever come across in my life lists the last day of the effectiveness of the policy, plan, service, card, etc., and you have until the end of the day to use it. I begged them to help me, to see if there was anything they could do, because this was not clear at all and the entire situation of the company pulling out of Florida is not my fault. They were rude and cold on the phone, saying there's nothing they can do. Of course there is something they can do, they can cover the claims, but they don't want to. Thanks Nationwide for leaving me in tears and leaving my cats vulnerable to their now "preexisting" conditions in their senior years. My monthly premium just skyrocketed from $208 to $587 ($7044 a YEAR), catching me off guard when I saw the charge on my credit card statement. Upon further investigation, I discovered numerous similar complaints on Yelp from fellow pet owners. While Nationwide is eager to insure puppies, beware of steep fee increases as your pet ages (mine is 8 years old). How are others dealing with this? Grateful for your feedback. read more
