    FRYBREAD LOUNGE- THEIR SISTER RESTAURANT

A lovely spot with beautiful art, and wonderful, welcoming people whose passion for the market is inspiring. We've never been to Arizona, and we only came here to see a specialist at Mayo Clinic, but we decided to explore in our free time. I'm from Hawai'i and so we're passionate about the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement, and ethical tourism. We're not about cultural appropriation or commodification, so when we ended up in Old Scottsdale and saw the countless storefronts displaying items influenced by Native American culture, we felt it was important to make sure the places we patronized were indigenous-owned. Each display had a biography platforming the the artist, sharing their stories, and providing education on the methods of craft used, and their cultural significance. The woman working shared that the market is kept open using a co-op structure, where the artists who can afford it, chip in for rent and expenses. Their website further details the purpose of their market, and how it "provides a safe and affordable avenue for Native Americans to sell directly to the public for economic empowerment." They have apparently generated millions of funds for Native American families. This place is a beautiful display of community- a business truly run by passion, which is something to cherish. Check out their website and if you're in the area, stop in and check it out for yourself! And, check out their sister restaurant, Frybread Lounge, which sources its ingredients from indigenous food producers! The Bison Birria Tacos were delicious, and the service was so friendly.

I can't believe I have not reviewed this store, and it is my favorite shop in the entire Valley! They have been open for about 3 years now, and every time I am in downtown Scottsdale, I do love coming in her to browse and see any new items they may have. Tonight, after eating at The Fry Bread Lounge (newly opened), my friend and I were peering into this store and we thought they were closed as it was past their business hours but the nice guy at the counter saw us and waved us in! I was happy it was open so my friend could see this place, and I, of course, was super happy to come in and check new stuff out. I lived on the Navajo Reservation for 4 years and it is a special place in my heart, so seeing familiar items like the Navajo scarf, turquoise, piñon coffee, Navajo paintings, indigenous flutes, indigenous artwork all fill my heart with so much joy! I had a chance to chat with the counter guy, and his name is Tyrel, and he was really nice and welcoming. He let us know now that there are over 300 indigenous artisans from 20 different tribes now showcasing and selling their work here. That is just really amazing! I have also wandered in here on Saturday afternoons, and there are usually some Indigenous artists playing music here, and I have heard drumming, flute playing, and seen dancers here too! When I need to get thoughtful gifts for friends, I have some here to buy items like T shirts and Navajo themed items to give to my friends and loved ones. I love their Navajo themed Stars Wars shirts and also tonight found the cutest T shirt from the designer Turquoise Mafia! There is so much to look at here and so many unique items! Definitely, you will find something special for you and loved ones here. Prices are higher than on the rez, but also know you're supporting local and they are paying rent in Scottsdale. Wonderful, unique shop in Scottsdale, I love it!

A live performer on a Saturday afternoon

A wonderful store if you're looking for native art, jewelry, pottery, and souvenirs. The store itself is an experience. Came in on a Saturday afternoon and was offered wine and coffee while I shopped. There was a live performer, and the staff was just lovely. They claim to be the only native owned and operated store in Old Town, Scottsdale. The shopping experience does feel authentic and I loved how each merchandise display is accompanied by a photo of a local artist and their story. The staff is also eager to engage and tell you more, but is not at all overbearing if you're more like me - a quiet shopper. A very wide range of prices, so I'd say mostly anyone will find a treasure to bring home. Highly recommend!
