We came here before our movie next door (rooftop cinema club) and it was the right move. We enjoyed a nice little drink and ate some tacos (the taco stand is independently owned) because this Native location no longer sells food from their end. Anyways i've been to the Santa Ana location and to be honest i had such a horrible experience that i even wrote a review lol. I almost forgot but this location definitely redeemed themselves. I forgot his name but the main guy that was there yesterday helped us and explained every drink and was super chill. The drinks were good and inexpensive! Walking around downtown came upon this spot not far from our hotel. Nice spot. They had some booths and a few tables and big TVs with a soccer game on. Ordered at the bar, got a flight and they had quite a few options. The bartender was patient as we looked at the rotating menu. Asked his opinion as to which beer was more popular. He brought the flight to our booth. They were all good. Started out really light and went darker. I didn't drink much, was in town to run the LA marathon. I sampled some and I liked them. I wanted to drink more. The dark one was my favorite. Had more of the lightest one, seemed like good hydration. Next time I'll check them out again. read more

Went here for pre show drinks and food. The drinks were fine, nothing above normal. The food, however was a disaster. Upon receiving half of the wings we'd ordered after 25 minutes we were told the rest were coming out. When they didn't after another 15 minutes and two requests we had to leave without out paid order. It's unfortunate that a poorly managed kitchen can ruin an otherwise satisfactory experience but they were exceptional inept. Stay away, plenty of other options nearby. read more

Came to this local brewery in DTLA and had a few beers. It has a pretty unassuming location so you can enjoy yourselves and drinks. Native Son has an unassuming location on Olive. Anyone who knows where the Modern Times Dojo was will be able to find it. This is actually the same building with some of the same decor and things. Beers are the main thing to get. It's about $7 a pint. The beer menu isn't big, but there's variety. Also it's not crazy expensive. The best one is the El Dojo, a Mexican lager. It's named after the former tenant of course. This one is pretty light, as in you can drink several of these. A bad thing is they no longer have a kitchen, so no food. They used to have burgers, fries, and stuff. Good beers are the best thing about it. It's also a pretty cool atmosphere, with all kinds of crap on the walls and everywhere. There's no food here anymore, but you can bring in things from wherever. read more

I have been to Native Son's a few times. This is a super fun bar with an amazing beer selection. It is one of the bars my run group ends up for a hang out. We meet here monthly and its honestly one of my favorite places. The music isn't too loud. The decor is a little out there. I should ask about their theme on my next visit. You get a mix of modern, church, baseball and neon lights. Does it make sense? well, after a few beers, it all does. And it's affordable to have a few beers here! Definitely recommend. Parking is a little hard to find. I believe they have brunch on Sundays - which I might consider when I'm in the area with a few friends. read more

Located in DTLA at the old Modern Times brewery. Tried out their IPA Circle day at the LA Beer Festival and was pleasantly surprised...as I usually prefer hazy IPAs. Knew then I had to see what else they had to offer. I follow them on IG and saw that they were having an Office Trivia Night. We showed up a little early to grab parking and a spot, probably not needed next time as it didn't get too crowded. They're still remodeling so their kitchen is currently closed. Thankfully they allow outside food for now, so we ran out to Shake Shack around the corner for snacks. The trivia was a blast and the beer was solid. We ordered: Circle Day, Half Day, and Zanadu. I can't remember the prices but I know it was decent for dtla. Will definitely be back! read more

I was shopping in DTLA and decided I wanted a yummy burger. A quick yelp search led me to Native Son, and I am so glad it did! First, this place is pretty inside with ample table seating and some bar seats. There is also limited patio seating out front. Although this is a brewery, they also have wine-based cocktails so you are not limited to beer here! I stopped by on a Saturday around 1pm and it was not crowded at all - I suspect this will change as more people learn about them. I ordered the Downtown Double cheeseburger and it was Ah-may-zing!!! The patties were very meaty, juicy, and flavorful. I don't love beef but this burger really WOWed me. I also ordered their Watermelon Smash (or spritz?) and it was so yummy and STRONG!! Service was fast and friendly! My only complaint is that the music was a bit loud and obnoxious at times. Maybe turn it down a tad? Nonetheless, I will definitely be back! They offer brunch on weekends, including bottomless mimosas ($22) which is really a nice touch! They also have happy hour!! You can park at a meter on the street or in the lot just next door ($$). read more

I'm always out and about looking for new bars to venture in to and found this one not too far from LA Live. They offer beers on tap plus spritzer specialty drinks. One great deal is if you show them your concert venue or sporting event ticket the next beer is only two dollars, what a great deal. LA Live can be a mess of a stressful place to be at if you want to drink before any event and this place is so much laid back without all the long lines and craziness. read more

I came for the first time last Saturday and I am glad I made the trip from Orange County. I came for the brunch and wasn't disappointed at all, the food may be a little pricey but really worth it because it's really rich and flavorful and has a big sizing as-well. For someone who doesn't necessarily drink or enjoy beers that much, I was pleasantly surprised by was their choices of drinks also. The staff was very friendly and made sure to check up on my party when they noticed we needed something. The energy was enjoyable and extremely lively with people all over the venue. Native Son opened about a month ago in the old Modern Times Dankness Dojo and have really made good use of the space! Located on Olive and 8th St. the newest Native Son bar is open to all, pets and kids included. (Kids til like 7 or 8) Street parking is a nightmare, like all parking in downtown, but there are 2 all day lots across the street, a Joe's parking a little further up the block and a parking lot right next to Native Son after Level. The food at Native Son varies cos they do a brunch menu on the weekends before 3, but the burgers are solid and the fries are great as well. While Modern Times was purely vegan food, Native Son offers vegan options for most of their menu and has non-vegan food also. Fans of the Modern Times Dojo will be glad to hear that Native hasn't replaced or covered up the super dope comics in the bathroom or the magician posters on the walls. And Native Son also offers pick ups for anyone that's part of the Modern Times Beer League. The tap list here is huge, like 30-33 beers usually and some pretty good stuff too. There's all kinds of beers from different breweries in and around LA. On most days you can get a Mumford or Pure or Everywhere or Moksa beer and Native Son even makes a few beers here. read more

Native Son has become a staple for my girlfriend and I. The staff is great and the atmosphere is just right for a chill spot to grab a beer. Native Son has taken over my old archenemy, the Stankness Dojo, and things have mellowed out quite a bit. For one thing, the kitchen now serves food instead of the fermented remnants of some fifth graders' science fair projects, which is a step in the right direction. (I haven't ordered any food yet, but it's nice to know I have that option now.) The tap list is now opened to a range of breweries, although Native Son is use the old Modern Times brewing capacity to make in-house suds. As for their tap list, well... it's great that they have Chapman and Modern Times and Radiant and Cellador, because it's so reassuring and comforting to see those beers absolutely everywhere I go. And what a smart decision to carry beers from Skyduster and Highland Park, whose taprooms are less than two miles away. And I feel Calidad and Mother Earth Cali Creamin' are really underrepresented on tap lists, so good for carrying them, too. Oh, wait -- I just realized I had my Sarcasmatron turned to full Gen X power. Native Son makes the same obvious error pretty much every other beer bar in L.A. makes which is that their tap list is myopically hyperlocal, so they're serving the same beers from the same breweries as everyone else, which means there's pretty much nothing that distinguishes them from dozens of other bars or gives one any reason to go out of the way to make a visit there. Of course, if the beers were excellent, it would be a moot point, but they've been mediocre at best. A lot of the bad acid trip décor has been left behind by Modern Times, with the questionable "art" pieces presumably sold off. But the cheap, tacky photocopied magician posters just glued to walls still remain, slightly curling off as they age. (The pages from the Mœbius/Jodorowsky comics in the men's room are also still in place, with Native Son plastering old event fliers for all-you-can-eat burgers over sheets that get too vandalized. It looks so country.) Where some of the weird Modern Times art was removed, Native Son has hung... paintings of baseball players in the middle of all that loopy Lite Brite-magician madness. The disconnect is just too much. And yet the staff tells me Native Son has not plans to take down the old décor. Ooooo-kay. Service is friendly and helpful, although the one staff member behind the bar can often get locked up by a long line of people coming in to place orders, so customers at the bar can be forced to wait a long time for service. I'm torn on what to think about Native Son: It's nice to have someone in the old Stankness Dojo space and to have another option for drinking in Downtown after so many places have closed. But... it would be nice if that option was done well. Native Son is really half-assing it -- one simply has to look at the mish-mash on the walls to know this. Their first priority should be finding someone who can curate a halfway decent beer program. There's a lot of potential there, but given how things are currently going, I'm not sure Native Son will do any better than Modern Times if they don't become something more than The Bar in the Old Dankness Dojo Space. read more
