    Old Fashioned in the dark

Tony's Saloon proved to be the perfect second stop for a late-night outing with friends. It's a great old, dark dive bar with a surprisingly capable cocktails. We loved the old, dark dive bar with a laid-back contrast to the surrounding Arts District.

A few weeks ago, I was walking, more kind-of exploring without intention, and passed the door of this place. I went in because the decorative webs of the joint drew me in, like a moth to a flame. I walked the place quickly, and knew I had to bring my friend Conrad, 'cause he is way into pool and this place had at least 5 tables. He would be spoiled for choice, and truth be told, I wanted to immerse myself in the great Halloween decorations of the joint, and see what would happen when I let Tony's Saloon be the stage for happenstance to occur. The decorations seemed to be professionally done, mostly because they did not read tacky. The decorations were Halloween inspired, obviously, but they were not scary nor were they negligible. Instead they were beautiful, not in a haunting way- that description fits a Zombie who is movie-star handsome. These decorations were beautiful in the way art is because they made me feel curiosity and wonder. For instance, I took a picture of purple and red string lights, draped in webs. When I saw the web in the bar I thought pretty, like a pretty witch who dressed like a pretty princess for Halloween. When I see it now, I see a nebula, a spider web that belongs in a galaxy not close to our milky way (which can also be given after a youngster says trick or treat). Then there is the picture of the skeleton draped in web, sitting in the bar. He was a customer--- but did he die and never leave or did he come in as a skeleton and sat and drink? The former is the answer because if he drank beers there would be a puddle near him. The bar had so much too see just on decorations, it was spooky moment that did not frighten me, which is good, I do not like the scary side of spooky season. One of the draws of this bar is that it is a mix of billiards, table games, good drinks, potential, secrets to be seen and personality. The personality mostly comes from all of the stickers, graffiti and promise in the joint. Like this bar is like a punk rocker girl (who is not a fan of Barbie) who is wearing a crazy print dress- dreamt by Pollack and a toddler who just discovered finger paints. She is wearing boots like Emily the Strange, has jewelry found in flea markets, and her hair is curly, yet in huge pig tails. She whispered to me, go get some air, and when I did, I saw a parade or rollerbladers just outside the bar. The girl (who is the bar) has your back. This place definitely supports a good time, with friends, with new ones, and just, in general, is a cool vibe. Conrad and I went on a Saturday night. The place was pulsing. There was no open table, and to my recollection no way of signing up for a table. I asked a trio who was starting a game, if Conrad and I could join for a doubles game. One of the trio said, not right now. Finally, Conrad and I found a table to join. We played the winners. I cannot remember if we won or lost but at the end the table was ours. I asked a pair if they would like to play, and they said, they were ok right now. Then Conrad and I were playing, and I saw a guy looking at us play. I then invited him to play. Conrad and him began to play. Both of them took the pool game seriously. If you never play, pool has rules. It is not just shooting balls into pockets. For instance, you have to call your pocket- where the ball will go in. And if the ball makes contact with another ball, before going into the pocket that may not count. But both of them respected the rules and thus the games they played were good. I spoke to his wife. She was a wedding designer. One time, she said, that she helped a young girl escape her wedding day. Her parents wanted her to marry and she did not. She entertained the parents in another room, while the girl left and got in a car with her boyfriend. I share all this to say that this bar allows for stories to be made and for people to be met, but effort is required. If you are a wallflower then you might become another sticker, who might be seen but not interacted with. I parked near the place in a structure near 7th and Mateo. It was 13 dollars for two hours. And if you did not make it back to the car before the time runs out, then your car will be towed. That is what the staff members informed me when I inquired. Hopefully this saves someone from their care being towed. I want to go back to place a sticker somewhere in the bar. Then I will be part of LA's story because I added to its collected artistry.

Super cool bar ! Love the vibe. 10/10 I recommend. The bartenders are always amazing. They're fast and always helpful. I've been coming here for maybe a year in a half and never have disappointed me. They do get super busy sometimes but the way they help each other out won't have you waiting too long. They are dog friendly. They even have treats for them. Inside the bar they have a bar top with a lot of seats, they also have a couple booths, a pool tables, a Photo Booth, and toutchtunes which lets you control the music. Can't forget ! They also have a PIZZA WINDOW. That pizza is so good ! They do close earlier than the bar. Outside seating is amazing they have a couple pool tables and a ping pong table. The security always does a good job making sure everything is under control. There's never any issues and super calm ! I love it here. Thank you everyone !

Love an old, dark dive bar. Dropped into Tony's as a second stop to bar hopping before a Dodgers game. A round of boiler makers (great prices on beer and well shots) for our group and we were off. Would have loved to take advantage of more drinks specials, game tables out on the back patio, and some eats. The mouthwatering aroma from Pizzanista next door, wafts straight through Tony's like a hot breeze of deliciousness. We'll be back for more happy hour shenanigans soon!

    Very cool decorations inside.

A great neighborhood bar with affordable and solid drinks, plenty of space, games, and good music! Checked out this place after looking for some bars in DtLA to get a feel for the area. Had a good time there, and loved that you could order pizza from next door and bring it inside the bar to eat! They have board games and pool tables. Went on a weekday, and while it was busy in waves, it never felt overly crowded. Also love that it was a casual vibe, not pretentious. Easy going with good vibes. Also not overly dark like some bars tend to be where you can't see past your hand when they dim the lights. The ambience was comfortable and lit enough to remain lively but not crazy bright. Would definitely recommend.

Friday late in the afternoon. Very cozy feel!

Went here after work on a Friday to meet up with some friends. For parking there are two lots, a small one that is free and a paid one, that the prices are a bit high! This place is right next to a great pizza place! I suggest that you order a pizza, then walk in to Tony's. Pizza is about 30-40 minutes. When you walk in, you get a very friendly comfortable 'dive' bar feel. But it's not a 'dive' bar. The bartenders were extremely friendly and helpful! Prices are fine for LA. I plan to come here again because it's a cozy friendly place!!

On the back patio, 3 different pool tables 1 dollar each

Tony's Saloon has become my neighborhood bar. I'm not an actual regular but I feel very comfortable there. The bartenders are very knowledgeable on most drinks. They allow outside food.there is 4 pool tables, dart board, ping pong table.Yhese are all in the outside covered patio area. Inside on the tables is a chess and checker table.Happy hour is from 6 to 8 I can recommend Tony's for a fun safe night out.

Good dive bar in the Arts District. I went there solo on a Friday night after dinner at Bestia. Lots of nice folks, including the bartender, who told me the history of the bar - one of the last real working class bars left in the area. Very red inside thanks to Christmas lights. Pizza by the slice next door, but I did not try.

There is a category of Los Angeles bar that exists outside the city's relentless cycle of openings…read moreand closings and soft launches and Instagram hype, a category that doesn't require a door policy or a design concept borrowed from a Wes Anderson film. It is the bar that walks in and earns the neighborhood's trust in a few short years, the bar that feels like it's been there forever because it figured out immediately what it was supposed to be. Tiny's Hi-Dive on Pico is that bar. It occupies the old Arsenal space, which if you've been in West LA long enough you watched go through its own identity crisis -- I had a trip-hop DJ residency there in a previous life, before it transmogrified into some paisley-wallpapered ersatz club that couldn't decide what it wanted to be. Tiny's has no such confusion. The name says dive. The floors say otherwise. The cocktails are made well, the food is made well, and the place is clean, which shouldn't be noteworthy but in a city where "dive bar" has become shorthand for either performative squalor or actual squalor, it is. It's a Chicago bar, which in Los Angeles means something specific. It means the hot dogs are correct. It means there are Italian beef sandwiches, and the Italian beef sandwiches are not a novelty item or a nod to a trend but an actual offering from people who understand the architecture of giardiniera and jus and thinly sliced beef on a roll that's engineered to get soggy at exactly the right rate. The food at Tiny's is way better than it has any right to be in a bar where nobody would blame you for ordering nothing but beer, and this is the tell -- when a bar kitchen is good without needing to be good, it means someone in the back actually gives a damn, not because the Yelp reviews demand it but because that's how they were raised. The happy hour lasts most of the day, which is either a business model or a philosophy, and at Tiny's the distinction is academic. The effect is that the place fills in waves and each wave brings a different crowd. The retirement set drifts in around lunch -- guys who've been coming here long enough to have a spot at the bar and a drink that appears without being ordered. By happy hour the mix gets eclectic: locals, people waiting out the particular misery of westbound Pico traffic at five-thirty, students, the kind of neighborhood cross-section that only happens at a place where a beer and a hot dog won't cost you twenty dollars. Later it gets busier and louder and on Wednesday nights there's live band karaoke, which is the superior form of karaoke, the form where actual musicians play behind you so your version of "White Wedding'" sounds ten percent less terrible than it would over a backing track. The jukebox is killer, which is a small detail that is not a small detail. A jukebox tells you everything about who owns a bar -- whether they trust their customers, whether they have taste, whether they understand that the difference between a good night and a great night is often just the right song at the right moment. The owners of Tiny's understand this. They are truly excellent people, the kind of owner-operators who are in the room and who care about the room and who have built a place that reflects something genuine about themselves rather than something calculated about the market. West Los Angeles is not a neighborhood that gets romanticized. It's a place you drive through, a stretch of Pico and Olympic and Santa Monica Boulevard that connects the Westside to the rest of the city, lined with strip malls and dry cleaners and the kind of mid-century commercial architecture that nobody photographs. It does not have a brand. It does not have a moment. What it has, on Pico, is Tiny's Hi-Dive -- a bar where they learn your dog's name before they learn yours, where there are treats behind the bar, where the bartenders will ask about your dog when you come in and mourn with you when they pass. That's not a pet policy. That's a value system. And it tells you everything you need to know about the place.
