A few weeks ago, I was walking, more kind-of exploring without intention, and passed the door of this place. I went in because the decorative webs of the joint drew me in, like a moth to a flame. I walked the place quickly, and knew I had to bring my friend Conrad, 'cause he is way into pool and this place had at least 5 tables. He would be spoiled for choice, and truth be told, I wanted to immerse myself in the great Halloween decorations of the joint, and see what would happen when I let Tony's Saloon be the stage for happenstance to occur. The decorations seemed to be professionally done, mostly because they did not read tacky. The decorations were Halloween inspired, obviously, but they were not scary nor were they negligible. Instead they were beautiful, not in a haunting way- that description fits a Zombie who is movie-star handsome. These decorations were beautiful in the way art is because they made me feel curiosity and wonder. For instance, I took a picture of purple and red string lights, draped in webs. When I saw the web in the bar I thought pretty, like a pretty witch who dressed like a pretty princess for Halloween. When I see it now, I see a nebula, a spider web that belongs in a galaxy not close to our milky way (which can also be given after a youngster says trick or treat). Then there is the picture of the skeleton draped in web, sitting in the bar. He was a customer--- but did he die and never leave or did he come in as a skeleton and sat and drink? The former is the answer because if he drank beers there would be a puddle near him. The bar had so much too see just on decorations, it was spooky moment that did not frighten me, which is good, I do not like the scary side of spooky season. One of the draws of this bar is that it is a mix of billiards, table games, good drinks, potential, secrets to be seen and personality. The personality mostly comes from all of the stickers, graffiti and promise in the joint. Like this bar is like a punk rocker girl (who is not a fan of Barbie) who is wearing a crazy print dress- dreamt by Pollack and a toddler who just discovered finger paints. She is wearing boots like Emily the Strange, has jewelry found in flea markets, and her hair is curly, yet in huge pig tails. She whispered to me, go get some air, and when I did, I saw a parade or rollerbladers just outside the bar. The girl (who is the bar) has your back. This place definitely supports a good time, with friends, with new ones, and just, in general, is a cool vibe. Conrad and I went on a Saturday night. The place was pulsing. There was no open table, and to my recollection no way of signing up for a table. I asked a trio who was starting a game, if Conrad and I could join for a doubles game. One of the trio said, not right now. Finally, Conrad and I found a table to join. We played the winners. I cannot remember if we won or lost but at the end the table was ours. I asked a pair if they would like to play, and they said, they were ok right now. Then Conrad and I were playing, and I saw a guy looking at us play. I then invited him to play. Conrad and him began to play. Both of them took the pool game seriously. If you never play, pool has rules. It is not just shooting balls into pockets. For instance, you have to call your pocket- where the ball will go in. And if the ball makes contact with another ball, before going into the pocket that may not count. But both of them respected the rules and thus the games they played were good. I spoke to his wife. She was a wedding designer. One time, she said, that she helped a young girl escape her wedding day. Her parents wanted her to marry and she did not. She entertained the parents in another room, while the girl left and got in a car with her boyfriend. I share all this to say that this bar allows for stories to be made and for people to be met, but effort is required. If you are a wallflower then you might become another sticker, who might be seen but not interacted with. I parked near the place in a structure near 7th and Mateo. It was 13 dollars for two hours. And if you did not make it back to the car before the time runs out, then your car will be towed. That is what the staff members informed me when I inquired. Hopefully this saves someone from their care being towed. I want to go back to place a sticker somewhere in the bar. Then I will be part of LA's story because I added to its collected artistry. read more

Super cool bar ! Love the vibe. 10/10 I recommend. The bartenders are always amazing. They're fast and always helpful. I've been coming here for maybe a year in a half and never have disappointed me. They do get super busy sometimes but the way they help each other out won't have you waiting too long. They are dog friendly. They even have treats for them. Inside the bar they have a bar top with a lot of seats, they also have a couple booths, a pool tables, a Photo Booth, and toutchtunes which lets you control the music. Can't forget ! They also have a PIZZA WINDOW. That pizza is so good ! They do close earlier than the bar. Outside seating is amazing they have a couple pool tables and a ping pong table. Love an old, dark dive bar. Dropped into Tony's as a second stop to bar hopping before a Dodgers game. A round of boiler makers (great prices on beer and well shots) for our group and we were off. Would have loved to take advantage of more drinks specials, game tables out on the back patio, and some eats. Went here after work on a Friday to meet up with some friends. For parking there are two lots, a small one that is free and a paid one, that the prices are a bit high! This place is right next to a great pizza place! I suggest that you order a pizza, then walk in to Tony's. Pizza is about 30-40 minutes. When you walk in, you get a very friendly comfortable 'dive' bar feel. But it's not a 'dive' bar. The bartenders were extremely friendly and helpful! Prices are fine for LA. Had a good time there, and loved that you could order pizza from next door and bring it inside the bar to eat! They have board games and pool tables. Fantastic vibe, great service. I was initially going to Guerrilla Tacos but then I saw the Tony's "cocktails" neon sign--it stopped me in my tracks and I had to go in. Great, recently serviced pool table that takes credit cards. $1/game. Drinks were a bit on the expensive side. Their happy hour cocktail (Pineapple Paloma) was $12. Great outdoor area. They're not stingy with the heater. The bar was toasty! I ended up spending $10+ on the jukebox to keep the low energy country music at bay. I and a handful of friends stopped by on a Sunday night two weeks ago. (Our choice across the street was closed.) Bar was full, so I waited patiently and waited some more and more, clearly ready to order drinks for us. The main bartender saw me, but kept playing that power game shitty bartenders jerk themselves on, ignoring me several times to serve people who just bellied up. I hate those small bartenders, who completely miss the point of their jobs -- maybe because they hate people and their own shitty lives? Then one of the other guys (maybe a barback, tall, black) joined the bar, saw me and rushed over and was very nice. If it weren't for his integrity, I would've walked out after another five seconds. But never coming back again. First impressions are lasting ones. I work too hard for my money. Especially in this economy. F*ck him and this place. read more

A very fun spot that's sorta hipster, sorta dive bar, with a welcoming, low-key vibe and a giant patio in the back (with ping pong and pool tables). The mixed drinks were not inexpensive, but at least had generous pours and were well made. It's definitely a good spot to come with friends or celebrate a birthday. There's also pizza right next door and they don't seem to mind if you eat it in the bar or on the patio. An amazing bar in a fairly scary but getting-better part of downtown L.A. pros: immediately next to PIZZANISTA which has some of the best pizza in LA hands down. 5-8 p.m. happy hour with great drink specials and PIZZANISTA buckhunter arcade game in the corner cozy booth seating and a decent amount of bar seating outdoor patio with ping pong table friendly clientele and efficient/professional bartenders across the street from ERB and various taco trucks if pizzanista is closed (which they are, unfortunately, on mondays) cons: not much lot parking, and not a thru-way not much street parking, except for this one scary street on the side in which you have to walk past a bunch of shattered glass and typically, a toilet no drinking in the outdoor patio (there used to be, back in the day, but it has been prohibited lately, i've heard different accounts regarding either complaining neighbors and/or permits-in-progress) hard to get in touch with management immediately. i've called a few times and left messages that were not returned, and eventually resorted to a yelp message, an instagram message, and an email to management, that was eventually returned. but this is probably my favorite bar in downtown L.A. it's kind of grungy and kind of hipster but not in a terrible way, and i've met really cool people here, on both sides of the bar. read more

There was a patron who was rubbing his elbow and back on me at the bar clearly making me uncomfortable. I told my boyfriend. He switched seat as with me & the guy continued to do the same. Tony's has been our go-to spot for great cocktails and great service from every single bartender. It's a lot darker inside than most bars but definitely sets a vibe. Aside from the great cocktails, inside they have a pool table and a jukebox. Outside they have more bench seating, chess, foosball and a ping-pong table. While there are only two boards, there are three sets of pieces provided; two wooden and one plastic. There was also a foosball table and dart boards. Was working on a film shoot on skid row and discovered this place on the way home. Dive bar on the outskirts of DTLA. Cant really rate a bar after only going once as every night at bars is different but for my first time there, I had a great time. The bartender was extra friendly and served up great drinks. Also had a slice of their white pizza which made my night. It was amazing and only $4. Definitely some of the better pizza that you'll find in LA. Ambience wise, it's equal parts bar counter and booths to sit at so unless it's extremely packed, chances of having a place to sit are pretty good. Even though the area is a little sketchy because of where it's at in relation to DTLA, don't let that stop you from going in and enjoying a drink and slice of pizza.
