Fabulous time visiting Native Son Vineyard! First things first-don't let the initial stopping point worry you. The tasting room is a small cabin right off the road. It's cozy and perfect for Mike to walk you through the seven wines bottled here. Mike is wonderful-welcoming and hilarious to talk to. For my wine aficionados-NSV puts their own spin on the muscadine grapes native to the area. These are not your typical sweet blends. They have better depth and complexity than any other muscadine wines we have previously tasted. After a tasting, we had freedom to view the growing areas, a lovely cabin for seeing the grounds from an elevated area, and see some adorable goats as well as see Fred and Barney, the resident hogs on the property. My fiancé and I bought a Groupon to this winery and decided check it out today. We have both toured countless vineyards and wineries and this remarkably different than any we have been to before...in the best possible ways. While most wineries greet you with a very elegant and borderline ostentatious tasting room, Native Son does their tastings in a renovated tobacco barn. This allows the experience to be less formal and more inviting. We had the pleasure of doing our tasting and tour with one of the owners, Mike. He is tour standard country guy, tattoos, humor, values, and above all, passion for what he does. While there, we were allowed to sample all of their available wines, which were fantastic. This is a muscadine winery so if you are expecting chardonnays and merlots, this may not be your cup or tea...well, glass of wine. My fiancé is from up north and has only recently discovered a live for the sweet grape, so she was in love with the "no added sugar" concept of this wineries products. The purity of their wine can be easily tasted. If you are out this way, do yourself a favor and stop by. Even if you aren't a wine person, the people that run this place make it more than worth the time. read more

This is an awesome little muscadine vineyard run by a husband and wife. The location is definitely low-key and not really your usual idea of a vineyard or wine tasting experience, however, we had a great time and the wines were excellent. I'm usually not a fan of muscadine wines but I really enjoyed the wines here. The owner explained how he doesn't add any extra sugar to his wines and how his process is a bit different, and it was definitely noted in the taste. A "mom and pop" operation suggests a small business with humble roots, but in the case of this little winery, there is no hyperbole involved. Mike (winemaker/wholesaler/tour guide) and Tammy (business and marketing) are literally the only two permanent employees. Their passion for what they do shows in their products, but beyond that, experiences here may vary considerably. Should you drop by Native Son on a whim, you might leave a bit disappointed. The vineyard is off the beaten path and easy to miss, the hours are very limited, and the tasting room is a not-at-all spacious former tobacco barn. There are half a dozen wines available at any given time: about four regulars and two that change as Mike experiments with different combinations. All are muscadine blends, which can be disarming if you aren't accustomed to that grape. Fortunately, for those who do like muscadine products, Native Son's wines will not disappoint. There is little-to-no added sugar, so the wines aren't cloyingly sweet. They are, however, crisp, fruity and clean. My wife and I sampled all six during our visit and were most impressed by the Golden Warrior (a bronze muscadine blend), Red Warrior (muscadine + raspberry), and Blue Warrior (muscadine + blackberry). The wines normally go for $15/bottle but were priced at $12 when we visited - $11/each if you buy a case. Were this the end of our visit, we would have left having enjoyed the wine but wondering if it was worth the drive. However, we took advantage of a Groupon that also included a tour (along with a free bottle), and this gave us a considerably greater appreciation for Native Son's operation. The deck above the cellar offers a breathtaking view of the pasturage below, and Mike was more than willing to let us hang out and eat/drink/take in the scenery if we were so inclined. An energetic storyteller as well as a gracious host, the winemaker also gave us a rundown of the process he follows. Even if you're familiar with the basics of how wine is made, you can't help but be impressed by the exacting amount of labor, attention to detail, and quality control that goes into each bottle. Native Son is likely to mean different things to different people. To those who have visited and sampled larger and more varied vineyards, it might seem almost laughably quaint. To those who opt for the tour experience (currently $22 for two people/$44 for four on Groupon), it's an inside look at one couple's labor of love. Found this gem on a browse through Groupon for a winery to go to during our trip to Asheboro... So glad we did!!! Quaint setup for the tasting which makes it more personable and during COVID, ideal! The wine selection was great and out of the 7 varieties available we left with 4!!!! Mike who is the genius behind the wine was our host and gave us the tour, explaining everything from the grapes to how the bottles are labeled and sealed. The cabin they offer to you to stay and enjoy your wine and snacks they have available is the BEST!!! I wish they would offer to rent it for an overnight stay (Something to think about ). read more

Best wine experience I have ever had in NC. The tour and tasting was very entertaning and fun. The owner is friednly and super passionate about wine making and we learned a lot from him. Nothing can beat this view and a glass of wine with cheese and crackers and other homemade muscadine products. Will be sure to visit again and again. This place is GREAT! Tammy Lee and Mike are passionate about their muscadine wines and have a great product (or products rather). We used a groupon and we got a tour of the grounds, a tasting of all their wines, and a bottle to go. Once you've done the tasting and the tour, you get to sit on the deck of their cellar atop a hill and look out at the pastures and mountains in the distance. They recommended we bring a picnic, so we did and we couldn't be more pleased. Hanging out, having a snack and enjoying their wines while taking in the view made for a perfect afternoon. Even if you only have time for a quick tasting, I would stop in. You won't be disappointed!! read more

Oh my goodness, where to begin! Mike was an absolutely wonderful host who had a plethora of knowledge and passion for his craft. The tasting room, while small, is adorable and full of history. The wines are all delicious with a variety of flavors and they are perfect to drink year round. The property is absolutely gorgeous, and all of the animals on property are very friendly including their welcome committee (a very fluffy orange kitty) and their 2 month old baby mule, Winston. When we sat down for the tasting, Mike told us that one of his family members had recently passed away and they had their funeral yesterday. Even though this very devastating event had recently occurred, Mike did everything he could to ensure we had a great experience, and even set up a little dining/viewing space so we could enjoy their gorgeous views, their wine, and some local goat cheese we purchased with some complimentary crackers. This was a wonderful experience, and we will absolutely be returning! read more
