I'm in a raw foods certification chef course. some of my staples are: Coconut oil, raw cashews, raw sunflower and chia seeds, flaxmeal and a few other produce items. I buy the produce items (dates, which are $$$$$ in organic stores), but affordable, more or less at Hy-Vee. I've been buying staple items at Hy-Vee. Coconut oil, 14 ounce, $11.00, 2 cups of cashews $4.99. Someone in my raw foods group at a meet up suggested Natural Grocers. They have demonstrations, and from time to time my raw food group has pot luck there. I went to Natural Grocers, knowing the prices on raw cashews. I bought enough I'll not have to go back for a little while. A pound bag of raw cashews (4 cups), $4.68. (vs. 2 cups, $4.99) I go through alot of coconut oil. I give it to my dogs, and I use it sometimes in smoothies. It's used in desserts. I almost ordered it from Amazon. Then I found Natural Grocers has it for 24 ounces for 17.00. Heck yeah! So that's the boring stuff...the cool stuff is: I bought Buffalo burgers. I'm not vegan cause I have a family, and they like certain items. I saw and took a picture of ostrich meat. But the greatest thing that will have me back into this store, is the epiphany I had when I walked down the dog food aisle. I have a dog who has a grain problem, so I give him Avoderm. I buy it at Petco for $15.00 a bag. Natural Grocers sells it for $11.86, and sells the big bag for only $46.00. That alone will get me back in this store. Natural Grocers faces what my friend Rob M.'s correctly calls: Whole Paycheck. I don't go into that store cause of certain things, but will go if I find one out of town and I'm being reimbursed. I will totally shop at any Natural Grocers, and they have them kind of like Trader Joe's in certain areas. Hooray for finding this great buy on dogfood! Doing flipflops at how much I'll save by shopping here. I only wish it were in Kansas City closer.

The only thing bad that I have to say about Natural Grocers is that I am disappointed that I did not stop by sooner. I was in need of Psyllium Husk Powder for another attempt at finding a good low carb bread recipe. After a couple of previous stops that didn't have what I needed, I was on my way to Whole Foods. Natural Grocers jumped out as I was driving by so I decided to give them a try. I quickly found what I needed along with many other things that would be difficult to find at other stores. I roamed around the store checking everything out. I was impressed with the healthy selection of food and the prices were not outrageous like many places. The aisles are wide and you never feel crowded. Granted they were not super busy, but I never turned down an aisle and felt I needed to go around to another one because there were a couple of carts with people looking for items. Although the overall selection may seem small, you will find a great selection and organic. You won't have to look for the small organic section in the back corner. You won't find organic right next to non-organic. This is really the store for those who want better food choices. The employees are just joyful and really make a trip to the grocery store a better experience. I loved everything about Natural Grocers and will be back! Don't be like me and wait until you need that item that isn't on the typical store's shelf, check Natural Grocers out! You will not be disappointed!

They mailed a coupon prior to opening, so I was excited to check it out. The coupon entered you into a drawing, got you $10 off groceries and got you a free reusable bag. Good thing about the bag, because I left mine in the car. The produce section is smaller then I had anticipated. Past the produce are aisles of bulk items like wheat germ, germy wheat, veg-any sprouted wheat berry.....hell, I don't know. I try to eat organic whole foods, but I am not this dedicated. I'm guessing a lot of non-meat eaters shop here. That guess is also influenced by the huge selection of vitamins. Some cool things- Great natural beauty product section. Pre packaged samples! I picked up a bottle of water, rice chips, tea bags and wrinkle cream. No bags. You bring your own or use a cardboard box. The store is nice and clean. Very spacious with good customer service. I didn't really find anything here that I couldn't already get at Whole Foods. In fact, I stopped by Whole Foods afterward to pick up some of my favorite things. I might only go back if I needed a couple of items and did not want to deal with crowds at WF.

    It is... Forbidden. ((Gasp!))

The pizza guy gave us some good intel on what to get and not get, and our pies were made perfectly and brought out hot to us. The bakery has a great selection of freshly made cookies, cakes and other fun items and they were all reasonably priced. I had a peanut butter explosion and the other ladies had some fun frosted sugar cookies. For me the cookies were too crumbly but they loved them. The reason for 3 stars was lack of customer service. I had to go to the front to get cups for soft drinks. The woman I approached didn't say 1 word to me when I told her what I needed. She just walked away to a register where she rang in my purchase. It would have been nice had she said, "follow me," or "I can help you with that." But i figured out what she was doing and paid at the register and then told her I had a problem. She said, "what?" with an irritated tone. I told her I needed the cups I had just paid for. Again, she walked away from me, apparently expecting me to follow her, and I did. Then she asked another employee to hand me the cups. The other woman did that and I thanked her. The cashier who rang up our few groceries was pleasant and the bagger actually joked with me, so at least I had that as I was leaving.

But this review is more a story about how this place operates. Every Veteran's Day area HyVee's have a breakfast for Vets. My little brother (Army Vet) and I (Navy Vet) go each year. Mostly so we can let the people at HyVee know that we appreciate not only the breakfast but that they as a company and as individuals that VOLUNTEER to work the event, are deeply appreciated. So special shout-out to them for their time and consideration! As for the grocery store itself. It is exactly what you want out of a grocery store. Some of the things I really love: Bright and Clean Huge Selection Meat counter people are really helpful Food counters are usually well stocked and organized. Some things that need improvement: Produce selection. Good Basics but there seems to be no expanded offerings. Also while on produce... they at one time had a lot of the precut onion and veg and did a good job maintaining that. But, that has slipped. Bakery. So many wonderful options. But, there is no one willing to talk with anybody at that counter ever. And the one thing that bugs me about every grocery store... impolite shoppers! Hey, we all want to get in and get out with what we hafta get... we can do so politely and courteously. Look up. Pay attention to what is going on around you. Ask yourself if you are going to be specifically getting in someones way/personal space? Ask yourself if you are about to run into someone with your cart? -Sigh- this does NOT influence the stars for this HyVee.

I love this store because it's the nearest store to go to return Amazon products. It also has a wide variety of meat, selections, cheese selections, and an amazing hot bar. You can get food items ranging from pizza to fried chicken to Indian curry plus incredible soups like minestrone and clam chowder. They have a wide variety of salads and cold food items like Sushi and sandwiches as well to offer. I recently checked out their cake selection and was blown away by the variety of decorative cupcakes they have started to carry. There is a cute little space near the entrance where you can enjoy the hot/cold bar food items. Apart from the above selections, they also have tons of frozen products, dairy items, vegetables, holistic medicines like supplements, clean skincare and makeup, and so on available for purchase. However, if I compare it with other stores, the pricing does tend to be on the higher side. That's why I do not do all my grocery shopping here. it's always clean. The staff is friendly approachable, and very helpful. If not for groceries, I would definitely recommend you to going in and trying their hot bar because you wouldn't regret it!! I also had a decaf iced latte, which was tasty. Both my mom and I agreed that the food was good and richly flavored. The employee who served us was both nice and knowledgeable, answering any questions we had about food options we weren't familiar with in easy to understand, succinct terms. When I went (mid afternoon on a Tuesday) it was pretty quiet, with one employee in the front and a couple of other patrons seated. There was some pop music in the background on low volume, which I appreciated. Overall the vibe at that time of day on a weekday was very calm. I'm interested in checking out their karaoke, live music, and tea time nights/events in the future. They definitely look like fun ways to spend some time! Ultimately, if you're looking for good, casual European fare, including Eastern European, or even if you're just curious, I absolutely recommend European Market and Cafe.

I recently attended a somewhat fancy Tasting Tea Party" here, which was part delightful and fun,…read moreand part awkward and disappointing. The table setting was lovely, with small vases of roses, and it was a great way to gather with 5 friends for a fun afternoon. They provide tiered towers of small sweet and savory treats, which included a delicious pastry with bits of pear, a slice of tasty cheesecake to top with strawberry jam, salmon with cream cheese rolled in a crepe, and a tasty but crumbly tiny sandwich. Each tower was shared by 2 people with one of everything for each. However, they weren't all "finger food," and some were too messy to pick up, and/or too big to eat in any dainty way in one clean bite! So we had to ask for small plates to put them on, and utensils of some sort...and more napkins, of course! It seemed those kinds of things should' have been provided or anticipated without our having to ask or go get them ourselves. We expected they would serve various teas by pouring a small amount in our individual cups to try, and tell us what kind we were tasting, and then come back in a bit with the next kind to taste as we munched on treats. Instead we got individual teapots, in which we could only choose one flavor to brew, when we all wanted to try them all...it was supposed to be a tasting!! But having 6 pots of unlabeled teas, and not remembering which was what, and everyone wanting to taste all made it unnecessarily complicated. And continually passing 6 different pots of unknown teas back and forth across the table was cumbersome and confusing. We tried to write each type on a napkin and twist them around the teapot handles, but those didn't stick! And if you didn't like one kind, or more, there was nothing to pour the remainder from your cup into in order to try the next. So one of us left the table to ask for a "tea-spittoon" so to speak. A good time was had by all, but it wasn't an event we would want to do again at the European Market and Cafe. It is a fascinating market with a large variety of packaged foods and candies from many countries. It would be very helpful to be multilingual in order to read the labels to know what they are! You can also enjoy a meal in the cafe, and/or carry out some pre-prepared fresh specialty foods, pastries and desserts. But be prepared for a little sticker shock. Then again, I guess that's common everywhere these days!
