Natural Grocers is my favorite store! It is the only store whose produce department is ALL organic, as is most everything else in the store. This company is serious about health, which shows in the fact that they refrigerate many liquid supplements and oils, nuts, seeds, etc. that other stores don't. They have the largest and best selection of high quality supplements I know of which are not all mixed in with trendy, non health items. Their own brand label products are wonderful in quality and reasonably priced. If you want a serious health store experience, come here! read more

Underrated store. Natural Grocers is one of the most wholesome places to be at. It has a particular smell that makes me feel at home. Most employees are super nice, always available to answer any questions. The produce selection, vitamin, health and beauty selections are amazing. I always find myself trying something new in the main grocery section - feeling environmentally responsible and healthy with everything I try. A downside is that sometimes the store is a bit of a mess. Carts all over the front, messy/unmopped floors, etc. Triggers clean freaks like me. Also - sometimes I see people shopping there with their small dogs. Pretty sure only service animals are allowed. Not that I mind though - they've been cute dogs. read more

Portobello mushrooms were absolutely coated with mold within 24 hours while constantly being refrigerated. Packaging was caked in black ooze. They seemed excessively decayed, pretty unacceptable. Really good selection of bulk herbs though. read more

I'm in a raw foods certification chef course. some of my staples are: Coconut oil, raw cashews, raw sunflower and chia seeds, flaxmeal and a few other produce items. I buy the produce items (dates, which are $$$$$ in organic stores), but affordable, more or less at Hy-Vee. I've been buying staple items at Hy-Vee. Coconut oil, 14 ounce, $11.00, 2 cups of cashews $4.99. Someone in my raw foods group at a meet up suggested Natural Grocers. They have demonstrations,and from time to time my raw food group has pot luck there. I went to Natural Grocers, knowing the prices on raw cashews. I bought enough I'll not have to go back for a little while. A pound bag of raw cashews (4 cups), $4.68. (vs. 2 cups, $4.99) I go through alot of coconut oil. I give it to my dogs, and I use it sometimes in smoothies. It's used in desserts. I almost ordered it from Amazon. Then I found Natural Grocers has it for 24 ounces for 17.00. Heck yeah! So that's the boring stuff...the cool stuff is: I bought Buffalo burgers. I'm not vegan cause I have a family,and they like certain items. I saw and took a picture of ostrich meat. But the greatest thing that will have me back into this store, is the epiphany I had when I walked down the dog food aisle. I have a dog who has a grain problem, so I give him Avoderm. I buy it at Petco for $15.00 a bag. Natural Grocers sells it for $11.86, and sells the big bag for only $46.00. That alone will get me back in this store. Natural Grocers faces what my friend Rob M.'s correctly calls: Whole Paycheck. I don't go into that store cause of certain things, but will go if I find one out of town and I'm being reimbursed. I will totally shop at any Natural Grocers, and they have them kind of like Trader Joe's in certain areas. Hooray for finding this great buy on dogfood! Currently there is a lot of construction around the store so it was difficult to get to and find a parking spot. I'm sure this will not be an issue once construction is complete. The challenge of being an "organic" shopper is that you develop relationships and loyalties, and yet, you still want to give new businesses a shot. Natural Grocers is not "new" but it is new to this marketplace. They are in the old Borders at 91st and Metcalf, and I have to say, it was a nice experience. I'm generally price-insensitive on food, as I'm more concerned with getting what I want (I admit, this is a luxury of a single man), but if they can introduce some price competition with Whole Foods, I don't see anything wrong with that. As long as the farmers and ranchers are getting paid a fair price, I'm happy to pay more. This is simply a smaller version of Whole Foods, which is less than a quarter of a mile away. It's also a little less busy. We'll see what changes over time. It's only been open for a few weeks now. I agree with Rob M. that the number one place these guys could go would be the Crossroads...a huge complement to Bad Seed Farmers' Market. read more

I wish I had been able to shop at Natural Grocers in Overland Park today, but alas I did not feel safe. When I walked in, there was a woman in the produce section who was completely maskless. There she was, breathing on all of the produce, spreading her germs throughout the store. Yet we have a mask mandate in our county! When I shopped there previously, I felt safe. So imagine my disappointment when I saw her. I will not be going there again, and I really wanted to support this store. read more

The only thing bad that I have to say about Natural Grocers is that I am disappointed that I did not stop by sooner. I was in need of Psyllium Husk Powder for another attempt at finding a good low carb bread recipe. After a couple of previous stops that didn't have what I needed, I was on my way to Whole Foods. Natural Grocers jumped out as I was driving by so I decided to give them a try. I quickly found what I needed along with many other things that would be difficult to find at other stores. I roamed around the store checking everything out. I was impressed with the healthy selection of food and the prices were not outrageous like many places. The aisles are wide and you never feel crowded. Granted they were not super busy, but I never turned down an aisle and felt I needed to go around to another one because there were a couple of carts with people looking for items. Although the overall selection may seem small, you will find a great selection and organic. You won't have to look for the small organic section in the back corner. You won't find organic right next to non-organic. This is really the store for those who want better food choices. The employees are just joyful and really make a trip to the grocery store a better experience. I loved everything about Natural Grocers and will be back! Don't be like me and wait until you need that item that isn't on the typical store's shelf, check Natural Grocers out! You will not be disappointed! read more

It never fails when I drop in to the this grocery store that by the time I leave I feel like every employee in the place offered to help me, or gave me tips as I was making the rounds. They mailed a coupon prior to opening, so I was excited to check it out. The coupon entered you into a drawing, got you $10 off groceries and got you a free reusable bag. Good thing about the bag, because I left mine in the car. The produce section is smaller then I had anticipated. Past the produce are aisles of bulk items like wheat germ, germy wheat, veg-any sprouted wheat berry.....hell, I don't know. I try to eat organic whole foods, but I am not this dedicated. I'm guessing a lot of non-meat eaters shop here. That guess is also influenced by the huge selection of vitamins. Some cool things- Great natural beauty product section. Pre packaged samples! I picked up a bottle of water, rice chips, tea bags and wrinkle cream. No bags. You bring your own or use a cardboard box. The store is nice and clean. Very spacious with good customer service. I didn't really find anything here that I couldn't already get at Whole Foods. In fact, I stopped by Whole Foods afterward to pick up some of my favorite things. I had shopped at the Natural Grocers in Lawrence previously and I was happy to see this one open in good proximity to my house and to Whole Paycheck. This store is bigger than the one in Lawrence and they have added a cooking demo room and will be adding classes in the future. This will never be my primary grocery store (Trader Joe's is where we get most of our food), but it fills a bit of a gap for us. There are some items at Whole Paycheck that are simply too expensive there to buy on a regular basis, such as non-dairy yogurts. Natural Grocers seems to have coconut yogurt on sale pretty regularly and the price is about half that of Whole Paycheck. All of their produce is organic (unlike Whole Paycheck) and is offered at better prices overall. The produce is always fresh and in good shape which is better than I can say for Whole Paycheck where I recently found some wrinkled nearly-rotting tomatoes for $4.99/lb. The selection of produce is a bit lacking, though. Natural Grocers has a really big supplement section rivaling or possibly surpassing that of Whole Paycheck and some of their prices are much better. read more

This is my favorite grocery store. Their selection of 100% organic produce makes it easy to choose what you want. I appreciate the fact that there isn't suspect produce mixed in. This alone is worth the trip for me. All of the basics are here. Nothing too exotic, but everything is high quality. If you are looking for something that you cannot find, or need more quantity, just ask! The layout of the store is simple and easy to navigate. The selection is just what I typically need. If they don't stock a specific product, I'm learning that I should really check the label before I make that purchase somewhere else. There are a few things that I can find for a more affordable price at Hy-Vee, but the Natural Grocer is ALWAYS more affordable than Whole Foods. They do not have the prepared selection that whole foods does, but if that's not what I'm looking for then all is well. Overall this is a great grocery store and well worth the drive. I feel better when I eat organic. So imagine my love of this store which has a business model of all produce must be organic. LOVE IT!!! I've recently looked for organic ginger and shopped five or six places in search of this hard to find root in organic form. Natural Grocers had it and it was decently priced. Today nothing organic is cheap, but when food makes me feel like getting up in the morning without the usual bad food hangover I get when I eat conventional...it's worth the price. They have a good selection of produce, meats, healthy snacks and supplements. It has become my new go to store for groceries. read more

I was delighted to find out a Natural Grocers location was coming to some place within a feasible driving distance of my house. I have, in the past gone to the one in Lawrence for specific items. The Lawrence store AND the Overland Park location both have an excellent supplement and body section. And as far as free range meat selection goes, I am able to get elk, lamb, and bison, too. I even believe I spied some ostrich meat last time I was there. The store is clean, welcoming, easy to find what you need, AND the employees are super helpful and nice. I have had a great experience every time I've stepped foot in this store. Even though it may not be right around the corner from where I live, I will be a regular shopper. They seem to have some pretty decent sales as well. I can get my local stuff at the usual spots & the farmer's markets. But for anything else I might need, especially in a pinch I know I can find it at Natural Grocers. read more

The selection here is probably 8.5 out of 10 (while Whole Foods next door might be 9.5 out of 10). So the selection is good enough to find most things you may need. People are super nice and prices are a bit more reasonable than comparable stores in many cases. I like the produce here. And I love the slightly open layout of the store. Slightly may be the wrong word. It feels REALLY airy and roomy in here, and that makes shopping more pleasant than nearby stores. read more

Tremendous selection of health and beauty, herb and flower tintures and vitamins. I love the clean, wide ailsse, and quiet shopping environment here. The staff is helpful and I also appreciate the community space. I just needed a place to sit a minute. Not a huge selection of prepared foods, but a very decent amount of fresh produce. I'm not big into health food stores because they can be over-priced with sniffly employees and sometimes not very friendly...with that said, I enjoyed my experience here. I was looking for organic sweet potatoes and they had 5 different varieties which was pretty cool! They had a nice produce section and lots of interesting grocery products. I don't necessarily HAVE to eat organic but I think I've found a new place to look for healthy stuff. While I was standing in line waiting my turn, another checker noticed me and summoned me to her line. I thought that was pretty nice. A lot of times, checkers just ignore a person or will grudgingly motion you over. This woman was sincere in getting me attended to and out the door. I appreciate someone looking after my precious time like that. read more

Can't find what you want at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's? Head on over here! This place is truly no frills and isn't that cosmetically attractive to shop in. Who cares???!!!!??? It had all the vegan ingredients I was looking for when I was on a baking spree courtesy of the Cafe Gratitude cookbook that I purchased. TJs & Whole Foods didn't have them! There are plenty of non GMO & organic choices here. Some of their fresh fruit and vegetables are priced well and their staff is super friendly. They are competitive with Whole Foods (next store), but have a much smaller selection. When hitting up Whole Foods, I typically hit up both stores and end up with some returns. This is a nice addition to the neighborhood and wish they were closer to downtown KCMO. read more

AND unlike the previous reviewee, I absolutely love that they support medical freedom vs medical tyranny, and letting people choose what's best and healthiest for themselves and their own family! Disappointing. The Hy-Vee on 91st is going to be killed, so I was excited to see this grocery store appear where the Borders once was. I checked it out yesterday (a Sunday). I like that they don't use plastic bags - bring your own, or your groceries will be boxed a la CostCo - and I like that they have a large "Community Space" that even has a few games and baby toys. And I understand that leaving the floor concrete is more eco-friendly (in the sense of not producing additional flooring materials) -- but it makes for an unwelcoming ambiance. The shelves also seemed under-maintained and messy compared with other chain grocery stores. I didn't see much that isn't sold at Whole Foods, and the prices seemed to match Whole Foods'. I bought several frozen Amy's meals that were on sale, and then went to Hen House, where the same items were cheaper at their regular price. My favorite milk, which costs $3.99/gal at Hen House, was $5.99. The bulk items are pre-packaged, which seems to me to defeat or at least warp the point of bulk purchasing (that you can buy as much or as little as you want/need). The check-out staff were friendly. I can see running here for eggs or other sudden needs, but I expect I'll be doing my larger shopping trips at Hen House once the Hy-Vee is gone. read more

So I went back with a new mindset and I have to say I've changed my mind. Yes they do still have a pretty limited supply of fruits and vegetables but what they do have is all organic! I did spend more time in the meat section. A lot of its frozen but that's ok! They definitely had some interesting and unique choices. The best thing about this store is the customer service. Everyone really seems to know their stuff and is exceptionally friendly. I once asked about the taste of a particular apple I had never eaten before and the guy went and cut up a sample for me. Another time I had a pretty long list of things I needed and the person took the time to go through and help me find everything. The prices are a bit cheaper than WF on some items. The produce department is small BUT it is organic. I don't have to worry about accidentally picking up something and paying a fortune to only find out it is convectional and I just paid twice as much as I could have picked it up at any other grocer in town. I also like that I don't have to walk by a counter with fish and meat all out in the open, the smell is less than pleasant at WF. read more

Having moved here to KC from another city, I was in search of a new place to get some of my specialty items not typically found in, say, a Walmart or Aldi. I was in love with this place as soon as I walked in. The produce, the clean aisles that are well stocked with all manner of delicious looking food. I was also fairly pleased with the prices. I know that some of the items I was price matching definitely were under where I have seen them elsewhere. Nice to know and I'll be back for some of them. Most notably, they sell Arctic Zero ice cream for like $3.75 whereas I'm used to seeing it for upwards of $5. I was pretty stoked. Their vitamin section was also extensive, nicely. This was the predominant reason for exploring the store. I was looking for my zinc supplement and my B-complex. This place not only had them but had a ton of the other varieties I could check out. I had a fun time looking through all of them and comparing. The employees even didn't seem perturbed when I was literally sitting on the floor (because the type of vitamin I was checking out was on that level) for a bit reading labels. Only getting 1 star for having some of the things I needed. I was just there. I went to the first cashier who was a gal w/blueish purplish hair who immediately started complaining that it was time for her break to the other cashier who was a woman w/short blonde hair in her 50's, (No greetings no did u find all that u needed). The lady w/short blonde hair complains back she needs to complete an order and doesn't want to be up there either. I switch lanes to the blonde gal. Again, no greetings no did u find all that u needed?. She scans and inputs all my products thanks me for purchasing a bag (it was my 1st time in a Natural Grocers ever so I observed I needed one) let's me know what charity I'm giving to. Then asks if I'm going to join their club to which I replied "No." she comes back w/well, why is it on some principal of yours or something?!? I reply no, it is because it is my first time here and you both were extremely rude. To which she replied huffily, we'll I have an order to put in. My response well, you need to do your job. Awful customer service. What a toxic work environment. Shouldn't they hire nurturing people to promote their natural products? read more

I like Natural Grocers because all of their produce is organic. I go there to buy other things as well as I would like to keep brick and mortar businesses in my neighborhood going. However, today I was standing near the front of the typically slow check out line when the clerk called for another clerk to come out and assist. The woman who came out, Karen, took the person at the end of the line behind me to another cash register to check her out. I politely went over as they were walking away and pointed out that I was in line before her and had waited longer. She glared at me and ignored me. Two people who had been behind me in line were subsequently checked out before me. When I finally got to the front of my line, the gentleman cashier apologized for her behaviour. Not good enough: she (he said her name was Karen) should have not only taken me before the other women once I pointed it out to her, but then SHE should have apologized. I'm sorry, but if brick and mortars don't have better customer service, they will continue to disappear. I have a lot of other choices and will be taking them. Disappointed. read more

The new Natural Grocers store opened today in the space formerly occupied by Borders at 91st and Metcalf. It's just steps away from Whole Foods, in the same shopping center. Apparently they often locate their stores near each other, just like Walgreens and CVS. For shoppers it's very convenient, because what one store doesn't have, the other one is likely to, and hopefully with some price competition Whole Paycheck may become more reasonable! The store seems to be well-staffed and everyone is very helpful and friendly. Pretty much everything is organic and there's a good selection of produce. (I'm going to go back soon to pick up some of their Meyer lemons, which I hadn't seen on sale before in Kansas City.) Prices seemed reasonable. There are lots of bulk foods. Unlike Whole Foods, which has a lot of its bulk food in bins, it's all pre-packaged at Natural Grocers. They do sell some bulk items in large, food-service sizes (like huge sacks of flour and rice). I liked that the nuts and some other products are kept in a refrigerator case. That keeps them fresher longer -- especially some items, like ground flaxseed, that go rancid pretty quickly at room temperature. Shoppers for bulk grains and spices should also remember the large South Asian Ambica grocery just north across 91st Street. It sells many of those items in large quantities for reasonable prices, too. There are aisles and aisles of vitamins and supplements at Natural Grocers and a large alcove with personal care and beauty products. Overall, I'd say the selection is pretty similar to Whole Foods, although they carry some brands that Whole Foods doesn't. Natural Grocers doesn't seem to want to compete in areas like take-out foods or fine cheeses, so Whole Foods leads the pack in those departments. All in all, a very useful addition to the area. It's always good to have more choice, which natural foods shoppers haven't experienced very much in Kansas City. Natural Grocers apparently has plans for more stores in the metro -- hopefully they'll consider Midtown, the Northland and Eastern Jackson County, which really need stores like this! read more

I am not An Organic Shopper. I grew up never buying produce, we just ate what we grew and raised on our rural spread, using what are recognized to be organic methods now. We didn't call it organic, we just called it growing/raising our own food. Everyone else in family farm country did it...it wasn't "going green," it was just life...and it was cheaper than purchasing produce retail. Because of this, I'm skeptical of trendy, overpriced designer food. This is where Natural Grocers comes in. I don't care for Whole Foods, find HyVee's specialty foods selection to be horrendously overpriced, and am glad this is there. Just good food, without paying out the nose for a virtually meaningless organic label. Reasonably priced, good selection, great sales, clean, organized, and (perhaps most important to me), lovely employees who are delightful to do business with, just very nice and accommodating. I don't do my primary staple shopping here, I'm not vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, casein-free, or partaking in any other restrictive dietary plan. I just like tasty, fairly priced, simple foods. It's a reasonably calm, peaceful shopping experience, too, what with its spacious layout and absent teeming throngs of shoppers jockeying for position (here's lookin' at you, Trader Joe's), and I like that. I consistently pack a lunch on work days, and there are some really good deals here for a healthy, budget-friendly brown bag lunch. When the BF gets the itch to grill, there is a decent range of (mostly frozen) specialty meats...we've had good luck with both bison and elk burgers. All in all, there are a lot of fun things to try, here, without having to break the bank. read more

Has really great prices and everything in the produce section is organic. I was surprised to find how many vitamins they had in there as well at reasonable prices. They definitely beat whole foods. If your trying to make good earth friendly decisions when it comes to your grocery shopping and you need to get things that you can't find/too cold for the farmers market then this grocery store is a good spot. On grocery day I usually hit up farmers market followed by a trip to Natural Grocers and then a last run over to Whole Foods. I wish I could eliminate Whole Foods all together and replace them completely with Natural Grocers but they don't have quite everything I need when I do my shopping. That said, it is a fabulous store. Got a friend that works there and he says they treat him great as an employee which makes me like them even more. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and they have a great selection of earth friendly choices. Their prices are below competition for the most part which is a huge plus and if there is something specific you want, chances are you can ask them and they will order it just for you! If organic, pesticide free, non-gmo, hormone free, fair trade foods are important to you then this is a location you shouldn't miss. They have a decent selection of fruits/veggies and a fairly good selection of meat from grass fed burger to buffalo to ostrich. They also have a pretty good bulk selection of anything from oats to granola to nuts. They carry chips and cereal and boxed stuff as well that is for the most part preservative/gmo free if your looking for healthier alternatives to that kind of stuff. They also have a massive health/supplement section if your into that as well. I can't really comment on the quality of that stuff as the only things I buy over there are hemp protein and mct oil, but those two things are great. If your gluten sensitive they have MOST of their gluten free products labeled with little GF sticker things on the shelves. one last thing... the Beeler's bacon... DELICIOUSLY AWESOME! read more

It is slightly more expensive, for sure, and I wish a "health food store" wouldn't carry carcinogenic animal products, but overall I love the place. Great place to shop, I love their integrity to only carry organic produce. Other stores might have organic fruits and veggies, but if you're really putting your money where your mouth is as a consumer, shop at natural grocers! I can't imagine how much work it takes to always only have organic! And remember folks, the other stores now carry organic produce because of the demand. Heck, even energy drink companies are now coming out with organic energy 'crap'. ONLY to get in on the $. So keep your integrity as a consumer and follow Natural Grocers lead. Lol.
