A grocery store that averages 4.5 stars on Yelp? Say less. I was in the neighborhood and stopped in here with my toddler to pick up some groceries and I was very impressed. First of all this is a huge Hen House. You walk in the door and you're greeted with bright lights, the most beautiful produce you've ever seen, and a massive area of fresh prepared food to take home. My kiddo was especially excited because they have those carts that also serve as "cars" which makes shopping with her a breeze as she can "drive" us around the store. I found everything I needed with ease and was especially happy to see so many local offerings at this location. It's a little bit out of the way but honestly I might come back here more often just because of how great it was. read more

Was looking forward to the Prime Rib dinner for two we purchased for our Thanksgiving today - @$75 we expected it to be pretty good. Unfortunately it was not. Sides were bland but typical Thanksgiving ones but we expected that. It was the Prime Rib that really disappointed. I don't think I've ever seen prime rib served with such an enormous hunk of fat. Only one checker at 7pm and a line of customers 5 deep with carts full of groceries backing up into the grocery isle. Certainly not what I expected from a "full price" grocery store to let a line of customers back up like this and only ONE checker to handle the volume. I would be more willing to accept this from a local Walmart with lower prices, not a Hen House. Made mention of this to the staff member at the front desk on my way out who in response nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders to me. read more

This Hen House is the bomb! They recently remodeled and it is working for them! Great produce selection. A juice bar with an orange juice machine to get you super fresh juice. A giant salad bar with lots of choices. The hot food option is huge: hibachi, sandwiches, sushi, traditional hot food bar (fried chicken, potatoes, etc.). They have a huge selection of cheese. The bakery is awesome (love those Tippins pies!). Then you've got the meat and seafood area. So many choices and so many friendly faces to assist you! It's even worth it to just stroll through and see what they've done with the place. You won't be disappointed! read more

We don't come here often, but when we do it is an exciting day. I'm never near a Henhouse except for once a month, when I have my eyebrows waxed. This is right next to European Wax Center. I had a small list. I generally enjoy shopping at Hen House. I judge a grocery store by the looks of produce and their bakery, if applicable. Then I walk up and down the aisles. My list was pretty basic. I liked the aisles and availability of food. When you enter, you seem to walk through a small walkway in the middle of their floral department. I found out later it was the side of a Starbucks. Nice florals, by the way. I shopped for what I needed, and noticed they have items other stores might not carry. Their produce is bright and pretty. I walked to the bakery department, and there's basic kiddish cakes and grown up cakes, frosting piped cleanly, not sloppy like some grocery stores. Cookies and pies were also available. I didn't see that the prices were any more than our local Hy-Vee. Now, for the check out. I bet that can become a hot mess during high volume of customers. They have self check outs, but I'm leery, and usually steer clear of that. The cashier gave me a Hen House card, and I saved nearly $2.50. All in all, it's a nice, fresh store, and one inwhich I wish we had in this area. read more

Alright, so I know that a good grocery store comes down to proximity and there probably aren't a lot of people Yelping for a grocery store, BUT... This place is legit! I popped in here to pick up some waters for an event with time to kill and found my jaw on the floor. My neighborhood Hen House is a shack compared to this palace, and the hot bar options were second to none. I ordered a Mongolian BBQ style stir fry that was healthy, delicious and under ten bucks. They also have fresh juices for $5, kombucha on tap, and fresh produce in addition to the typical supermarket supplies. I feel like Hen House is the class of KC grocery stores, and this one might just rank at the very top when it comes down to wrapping everything you could need into one spot. read more

I love this hen house location! My husband and I are here every week either getting coffee, sampling the cheeses, buying fresh flowers for the apartment, or stocking up on groceries. Though things may be pricier here, the fresh selection of EVERYTHING keeps me coming back! I first visited this location after I read reviews about their florists on theknot.com. I walked in with saved pictures of what I had in mind and they sat me down and generated an estimate that was half the price of other estimates I had recieved from other florists! The florists at Hen House did a wonderful job of gathering all the flowers and greenery I needed for my wedding. I wanted lots of fresh greenery (one that was only found in warmer states) and they had it shipped from Florida! The Juliet roses were ordered in bulk as well. Best hen house in town! This store is huge, and they have everything you might need. Vegetables and fruits are fresh and available pre-cut for convenience. They always have samples (at least on Saturdays and Sundays). Workers are super friendly and helpful. They always seem to have something on special in the produce section. And- unlike other stores in the area - they often have fresh cherrystone clams and fresh oysters. This small grocery store has somewhat everything you need but a bit overpriced. A few of us stopped in to pick up some salmon filet. There was a whole monkfish that was right next to the salmon filets that wouldn't stop staring at us with his mouth opened and sharp teeth that reminds of a piranha fish. I asked the butcher to grab the salmon that is far away from the scary creature. We also picked up some Shatto butter that gave the grill salmon and shrimp a creamy rich flavor. We were also in search of starfruit but we did not find any (maybe it's not in season). The honeycrisp apples in a bag was $1.99/lb. which was half the price of the honeycrisp apples not in a bag. The cashier who rang us up complained about how difficult her job was but was still friendly. We were happy she fixed the price on the honeycrisp apples as we did not want to pay $20 for a bag of a dozen honeycrisp apples. read more

If you are looking for a grocery which has almost everything...this is the place. Since they've rebuilt it, it now has a lot of added specials. Their lunch bar is amazing, their deli is beautiful to look at as well as their cheese selections. Of course it has a Starbucks coffee place and I've indulged several visits. Their organic section of produce is good, with great prices. Sometimes I venture out of my way to come here just for the organic produce. When you walk on you walk right into their beautifully arranged floral dept then over to my favorite section of the store, the produce, prepared foods, bread and cheese section!! They have an amazing selection of sixes meats and every cheese you could imagine!! Beautifully clean, conveniently located (assuming the streets around the intersection of 119th and Roe are not once again being gutted for some elaborate construction project), and filled to the brim with good stuff, this particular Hen House location has a much nicer atmosphere than any HyVee, Price Chopper, or other competing supermarket I've been to in the area. In addition, this store features the single best prepared food section I've seen in a KC area supermarket. The sushi is great. The $5 breakfast/brunch options are excellent. The Mongolian grill is fantastic... once you get some practice. (Pro tip: grab two sauce bowls before you drop your order off at the grilling station.) Kombucha fans will also appreciate the wide selection, both bottled and on-tap. All this aside, I almost never load up on groceries here. With Trader Joe's an arrow's shot to the southeast and a Super Target a few dozen javelin tosses to the west, there are vastly more frugal options out there. Still, you can't beat that $5 breakfast. read more

Now that there aren't any independent kosher grocers, butchers or delis in Kansas City, this Hen House has stepped into the breach. They have the most extensive local selection of kosher foods as well as a supervised kosher deli. I recently shopped for some Passover supplies and was pleased to see that they had a selection of brands, not just Manischewitz. There are also kosher dairy items, including cheeses and yogurt. Jewish shoppers should be pleased with this market, considering there are few alternatives! As for the rest, this is a good supermarket with a wide selection. They have a pretty good fish market, too. All in all, one of the better supermarkets in the area! If you need gefilte fish late, this store stays open until 11:00 p.m.! read more

I frequent this location because of the proximity of my office. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and they have a bountiful salad bar and deli counter that prepares delicious items. There is also fresh prepared chinese cuisine and sushi that always satisfies. This is a great stop for lunch, with a good-sized dine-in area if you want to eat while you are there. The store is always incredibly clean. They have a "health market" that seems to be every expanding, which is great because we could all live healthier! read more

I came here before the Jewish Holidays as I had heard this was the only market with a Kosher Meat butcher and had the largest Kosher section out of all the markets in the KC Metro. I was impressed to see a smiling Rabbi behind the counter, though they had a much smaller selection than I was used to. The staff was able to help us locate some hard to find items and was very friendly and bantered back and forth about religion. We only come here during the Holidays. We'd come here more often, except it's so far from us. If only they had a downtown KCMO location. It's so HARD to find Kosher food in Kansas City. I'm used to it being much easier in Boston and NYC. Also, the items are much more expensive than the North East. read more

A beautiful store full of many extras, such as a juice bar, Starbuck's counter, huge salad bar to create your own, made to order sandwiches & salads, Asian take out, Mediterranean bar, unbelievable fresh seafood, and a huge selection of fresh meats. Some good things and some not-so-good things here. (I will mix and match them in order to make this review more confusing.) On the good side, the takeout lunch offerings here are many and mostly of the healthy persuasion. However, they run toward the pricey, which is kind of a downside. The deli counter offers regular deli sandwiches, and there's a hot lunch counter with fried chicken, etc. I never eat these, so can't really testify about them. The salad bar is excellent. It's very clean, offers a wide variety, and is staffed by cute little Hispanic ladies who tell dirty jokes in Spanish when they think no one understands them. Awesome. On the downside, it's $4 a pound. Which is bad when, like me, you love the heavy items like bean salad and clottage cheese. The Chinese counter is fairly efficient, cheap, and has a good variety. There are a few outlying veg and noodle options in with the standard cashew chicken and egg rolls. Decent Chinese ala Americana, but wow. Really greasy. I occasionally order something when I'm trying to kill a hangover. Best bit here is the recently revamped sushi counter. Used to pick up sushi for lunch and found it of indifferent quality and fairly high priced. Also, bento'd sushi was mixed in with regular deli counter sandwiches and suchlike. Meh. Now there is an actual counter with an actual guy making sushi at lunchtime. It appears they have decreased prices and increased freshness. WIN. I'm developing a serious habit with the shrimp hand roll, which is full of veggies and comes with a sweet spicy chili sauce for $5. California rolls are also about $5. Can't beat a $10 sushi lunch. (As a side note, I would advise shoppers to be gentle with the sushi counter staff. They don't seem used to being noticed or complimented, even though they deserve it, IMO. Hope they get enough business that the new staffed sushi counter sticks around.) read more

They have a Starbucks and a Mongolian BBQ area for fresh made hibachi style meals. I'll come back and try that. The seafood area looked stocked and fresh. Omg the butcher department was to die for. They even had dry aged beef which I haven't seen at a grocery store before. I found an item I'd been looking for and hadn't found in NY or TN for 5 years so that what brought me in. Seems like every time I go into a Hen House it's nothing but issues. This time I went to fill 3 - 5 gallon bottles of water. Well about 8 gallons into the fill, we ran out of water. I waited a couple minutes thinking it might catch up. Nope. Out of water. What a huge inconvenience. So at check out I am telling her the dispenser is out of water so it's not 15 gallons of refill, about 8. She says about 9. I say about 8 and add in the fact I have to stop somewhere else to fill up. Janice is the checker name and she says "well it looks like 9 to me", I tell her that since I didn't get the 5 gallons I needed, I will take it back and dump it out and we can pay for just 1 full jug. Janice the Checker says "Whatever". SERIOUSLY. Freaking .39 cents and they just lost $1000s of dollars over years of my business. Done with Hen House. read more

My area of JoCo has three stores nearby, Whole Foods and two overly outdated stores in Hy-Vee and Price Chopper. So, when I find myself around the Town Center area, I make sure to do my shopping at this Hen House. It's clean, updated, the staff is friendly, great fresh produce (even an organic section) and organized. Let's be honest here, the big feature here is their meat department. Wow! It must be one of the biggest in the city, with every cut you can imagine. If you don't see what you're looking for, ask the butcher and they are always eager to help. The only downfall is the self checkout. It's a pain in the ass. I was trying to scan just a few items and I felt like I had a learning disability because nothing would scan. What a great name for a supermarket! (Although I'm quite glad there are no live chickens scampering about.:)) This store reminded me quite a bit of some of the larger Safeway supermarkets I'm familiar with in Denver and Baltimore. The produce passed muster, but the bakery section was surprisingly small. Their floral section was also not extensive, but adequate. On the positive side, I was taken aback by the huge meats section with butchers on staff. They also had a fair selection of organic and gluten-free items (not that I buy those). This is the first grocery store I found in Kansas City (technically Leawood). It's a very nice store. It is one of the cleanest grocery stores I've ever seen. The bakery is phenomenal. I have a one major problem with the shopping experience, however. The store is absolutely freezing in the summer, which makes grocery shopping horribly unpleasant to the point that I avoided the Hen House unless I was in the immediate area. I recently had a cashier I had to prompt multiple times before he would scan a coupon I had. Hen House is very pricey. I also wonder if cashiers are less accustomed to customers using coupons. read more

Oh Hen House salad bar - how I am obsessed with you. Love the options they have - the soups are somewhat hit or miss. The sushi here is even decent for the most part. I love the meat counter - their stuff always looks so fresh and amazing.
