It would be nice if this place wasn't so adamant about enforcing mask wearing on its customers. I was already at the counter being rung out with my few items when a lady started demanding I wear one. I said how I've already been walking around the entire store shopping without one so I'll just pay and leave now and she said they would refuse my money before letting me pay for the items unless a mask with strapped to my face How about just letting it be done with since I am already literally about to walk out and reminding me next time there is a mask rule at this particular store (not all stores are like this) instead of being rather irate and causing a scene? They also charge a 5% tax for Covid-19 Employee Hazard Pay. You can opt out if you happen to read their little sign by the register and know about it but they conveniently don't mention it while making the payment......like literally every other single donation based program does. So it's basically a surprise tax that you either just deal with afterwards or look petty asking for it back because it takes it away from the employees. How about just pay your employees more money because you're a grocery store that clearly makes good profit? And maybe a tip jar so people can do so at their leisure? Does all that 5% really actually even go to employees? Certainly won't be shopping here again. Shame cause they actually h e some nice stuff that I didn't see in the other stores. read more

I come here regularly for all of the things, but I especially love how you can get in and out super quick (forgot a tomato for dinner?! Natural Selection has a great organic and local produce selection and great deals on beer and wine. Clerks are knowledgeable and helpful. I also rely on NS for my iron supplement recommended by my doctor and for eco friendly hair products and cleaning supplies. Great snack selection too and many gluten free products. The best place in Nevada County for organic food...and at very good prices. All their produce is organic; much of it is local and it varies by season. You can usually get some great deals on local tomatoes towards the end of summer. Good selection of organic and sustainable beer and wine and a terrific bulk food aisle. I tend to stay away from their packaged food but you can find some good deals, especially in the clearance carts. The meat and dairy sections are minimally stocked but at least they carry Strauss milk. The workers are always very friendly and if you don't see something they may have it in the back, so ask. read more

Manager has been extremely rude twice now when I went in wearing a full face shield. Told me it was inadequate and told me I would not be allowed to shop there (without my mouth and nose covered by cloth mask). Had he been polite, maybe asked if he could help me find and purchase the item I went in for, that would have been polite and gotten him a sale. But he was abrupt and rude with a bully's attitude. Small store making some improvements in hiring friendlier cashiers. The prices have always been really high here and I don't understand this. Produce section is too small for a health-themed store. The front area of the store has an energy block. You walk in and the checkout area takes up the entire area. I feel like I have to know exactly what I want before I get there and have extra money to spend. Has a warehouse feeling, not a homey feeling or helpful clerks. There is an interesting wine selection behind the registers that's a selling point but I haven't encountered any staff there that are in fact knowledgeable about any of the wines being sold. So, here's my updated review, and my apologies for my bad review 2 years ago. Since shelter-in-place orders began in May, these lovely Humans have gone ABOVE and BEYOND to serve the community.( They remind me of a tiny natural food store that I worked in back in the late 70s in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury!) They started curbside pick up, mask requirement, and limiting the number of people allowed in the store at one time way before anybody else in the area did. I am an elder and immune-compromised, and this has been a very frightening time for me. They have listened to me cry on the phone, they have bent over backwards to accommodate my needs, sometimes on the spur of the moment. My prior review was given at a very dark time in my life, when I was mostly bedridden and just trying to not die.... which skewed my perspective on everything in the world. I was surprised beyond belief when I saw they had Mini Me's which are organic rice bites that I tried at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA for the first time this year. Wonderful little store. Somedays sells seconds at a great price. Got some Coconut Water the other day for .69 cents each, what a steal. Like the organic Beauty Section and the Soap they sell by Grass Valley Soap which is all Natural with essential oils. Staff needs to take the "home depot" course in customer service. Identify the customers needs and identify how your products can serve their needs. Be a healthy eating consultant. Don't use your position to assure yourself how much cooler you are than the customer. When someone asks, "Do you have gluten free products? " don't wave your hand and say they are all over the store. Find this a lot in sushi restaurants too. "Don't for a second think I want to serve you, I work here because it's cool." Ultimately, actually helping people out perpetuates your job. Great little health food store on Main Street in Grass Valley that has some awesome deals on clearance items and everyday items. You'd be hard-pressed to not spend anything here since the prices are better than other stores of their ilk. Also, the breads and dessert breads from area bakers are outstanding. read more

What a great natural foods store! Nice selection, good prices, friendly staff. Yes, prices are higher than what you'd find at Safeway, but you get what you pay for. Most of the expensive stuff is the processed stuff - and even those items were generally less than other natural foods stores in the area. I thought their prices for staples were pretty darn good. It's a relatively small health food store but they have a great selection and very helpful staff.

Let me just start by saying, I think the hazard pay idea is fantastic and more places should do that. My mom is here almost every day m and when she's not I'm buying stuff here for her. Definitely never again. Last time we were here we were told to order at the front. And we did. Even if took it a while and someone managed to cut in front us. No big deal, I get it. Pandemic problems. I'm super understanding. So today we stopped in for one item. So we wait at the desk, trying to read all the many signs about how to proceed. We get told to come in by a staff member. So we go in, grab the one thing we need, and go to pay. We get accosted by a customer who gets super uncomfortably close to me to yell at me for not having a mask. While the checker proceeds to chastise us for not wearing masks. Because apparently they're mandatory if you're shopping inside, but not if you're ordering at the desk outside. Like we were expecting to do. So no big deal, I totally get changing rules but the way it was handled today made sure I'm never coming back here again. Thankfully, the natural food store in Auburn is fully stocked for all my future needs. Worth the drive to not get contradictory directions and awful attitude from the staff and the customers. Hey this is a nice little store. Basic space, not spacious & pretty like Briar Patch, but they have a lot here, with emphasis on co-oppy, green, organic etc. It's sort of like returning to the 70s & 80s when co-ops weren't fashionable but always had cool stuff you wanted. You can do a full shopping here; they had everything on my list from dill to pears to gelato, and laundry soap (ok that was a little pricey but I needed it). Friendly workers. Good local produce, 7th Gen home supplies, small wine selection, and lots of basics like good tamari soy sauce, bulk rice (limited selection), spices, sodas, local meats, etc. Prices are reasonable & in some cases less than BP. read more

Horrible customer service!!!! If you don't look like a "hippy" beware you will get the "eye"..... normal looking citizens can't get organic vegetables too?! Wtf. I was totally ignored when checking out, the cashier was in a conversation with some granola chick and when he finally realized I was standing there he says "oh sorry". I should have just walked out and left my vegetables there. So sick of this town thinking they are better than others. Never will I be at this store again simply because customer service is SO unfriendly, god forbid I don't have dreadlocks and smell like B.O..... this is not the first time at this store but it is the last straw. This is, in my opinion, the BEST natural foods store in this town. I have been shopping here for years and always look here first if I need to shop at this sort of store. Unlike other similar places around here, this store is reasonably priced. You can find good brands of healthy/organic items for a fraction of the price you will pay elsewhere nearby. There is a little bit of everything in this store, it's always fun to browse around and see what new things they have discovered to sell. They have an amazingly large variety of stock on hand for the quaint size of this store. They have an awesome selection of vitamins and supplements, and will be happy to special-order anything you can't find on their shelves. The people who work here are knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend this store to anyone who is health-conscious yet feels that most natural foods shops are overpriced. This place is great! read more

I used to go here as a kid and never appreciated just how great it is until I moved away, now whenever I am home I go out of my way to hit up this place! Great selection of everything you'd need, organic, local when possible, and carries things that you would never imagine you could find outside of a huge chain like Whole Foods. I will never shop there again: gross and unprofessional employees. While checking out at the register, I was hit (and it was non-minor) multiple times, by a shopping basket dragged by someone's unsupervised child at high speed across the floor, the kind who's allowed to do whatever by their unfit parents. I had to turn around and ask multiple times to stop this, to no avail. Cashier did nothing to stop the harassment, which they were seeing. Eventually I had to tell the parents (who were standing right there and seen what was going on) that their child best stop hitting me now. Note to the store: next time you'll get sued and cops will be called. Their unfriendly, unprofessional cashier (no "thanks" ever) was standing right there and said nothing, while she should have requested parents to control their child using basked owned by store to hit a person. Will shop at their competitor store from now on. I like getting my food in safe and peaceful environment, where there's respect for paying customers. read more

This is a great little store for exactly what it says it is, a natural selection of foods that were stocked because they are reasonably priced for quality natural and often organic goods. There is no gourmet deli, but I've been able to grab a lunch of sandwich, sushi, fruit, yogurt or cheese and crackers from the shelves and can always find good values. Here's my experience ... i moved to G.V about 2 year ago ... i checked out different health food stores ... Briar Patch is the biggest and best, that's why so many people go there, even though a little bit more expensive. i have been health conscious for over 40 years and have been in many health food stores... i try to give some of the smaller unique stores some of my business if they are clean, Friendly, run well, and their prices are about equal ... The first time i went to Natural Selection Foods i wasn't impressed, the store was just ok ... i looked over their Veggies, the baby spring salad mix was wilted and in general most of the produces wasn't appealing to me ... i bought some avocados ... they were not very good ... The next time i had about the same reaction and like Rose said ... The staff didn't really want to be of much service ... Almost every time i have gone there ... it's different staff ... but every so often i would go in to pick up some chips and yogurt and maybe something else ... i don' even look at their veggies any more ... Safeway's spring mix and Organic section is what's Playing well for me lately. i did start buying bulk here a few month's ago, they do give a discount if you buy enough, which got me going in more ...But now i won't be going in anymore even though i need to buy bulk again ... Why ??? Two days ago i stopped in and picked up two Brown Cow Yogurts ... last night i opened one yogurt, it had mold on top, i checked the other container and it also had mold ... The sell by date was 12 days in the future ,,, No big deal ... i'll take it back and get them replaced ...[ though yogurt for me last usually way past the sell date ] i took it back about an hour ago and here's the rub ... The staff member [ With an Unfriendly Attitude ] asked me if i had a receipt, i said no, i had just dropped in for the yogurt, paid cash and didn't take a receipt or bag. He took the yogurt checked the date and went into a story about the yogurt they had in the case had a different date and without a receipt i was out of luck ... Store Policy he said ... and acted like i was lying about $9 of yogurt ... i didn't Feel it was right but i wasn't going to go into it with him ... i started back to get 2 more yogurts and was going to place a bulk order of over a $100 ... but when i looked at the guy's face and body language ... i said no way ... i'm not spending anymore money in this place ... i went to Safeway which i was going to anyway to get my Veggies, i got my yogurt their [ 20 cents more ] but well worth it ... i'll have to go to Briar Patch for my bulk items ... Yes i'll be spending more at these other stores on some items and YES ... i won't be spending any money again at Natural Selection ... If you go in ... ask to see their back refrigerator area out in the other building, odd to say the least ... That's where i figure the yogurt got spoiled ... i know it wasn't by me read more
