    Protein bowel $12
    Sweta S.

Lovely addition to downtown Durham! Once you come to grips with paying $12 for a bowl, this place is wonderful! I had a protein bowl and the service was friendly and fast. The bowl was delicious and well-placed and thought-out. The Nauti bowl was my favorite. If I am craving for açaí in the future, I would recommend this place or Happy Hale! I will come again. In addition, the ambiance is clean, cool, and spacious.

Great food, great service, great vibe. Açaí bowls are a bit pricey but worth it, smoothies are a great price. Highly recommend.

My personal favorite was the coconut but honestly, everything was delicious. I also love how they sprinkle some granola on the bottom of the bowl and it maintains its crunchy texture even if it sits under the base for a while. We've been to Aaktun in Durham multiple times for both breakfast and dinner, and it's honestly become one of our favorite spots. I'm Peruvian and grew up with Peruvian cuisine, so seeing lomo saltado -- a classic Peruvian dish -- on the menu immediately made me happy. Having also grown up in Mexico and lived in places like Miami, I really appreciate what they're doing with the menu: a modern, delicious take on Latin flavors that feels creative without losing what makes those cuisines special. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. You walk in thinking it's a stylish little coffee shop, then head toward the back and the whole place opens up -- gorgeous bar, tropical touches, cozy alcove seating, really cool vibe. One time we went with friends for a special dining experience they were offering, and it was excellent. The food, drinks, and whole experience were made even better by Fernando, the manager, who has always been incredibly warm, helpful, and accommodating. Highly recommend Aaktun for breakfast or dinner. Still haven't made it there for lunch somehow, but at this point we'd be shocked if it wasn't great too.

I explained and showed her that I booked standard seating and she said that meant outside, which I thought was strange because I was very careful not to book either option that was clearly labeled outdoor. I told her that we wanted a table inside and she said "I have a table that has a reservation for 11:30, can you be done by then?" I laughed and said "sure" but thought to myself that would be up to them! She asked another hostess to seat us, and after we were seated, we waited about 15 minutes and watched staff walk by our table multiple times and no one came by. The original interactions had already put a bad taste in my mouth, so I called another restaurant downtown and asked how long the wait would be for two. They could seat us in the bar area right away, so we got up and left Aaktun to head there. The first two experiences that I had at Aaktun were great. I'm glad I got to try their food because I won't be back after Sunday's experience.

They have multiple bread/bagel/english muffin/croissant options to put it on as well as condiments, meats, cheese, eggs, and vegetables. My go to breakfast toppings are avocado, egg, cheese, turkey sausage, and cream cheese so I'll probably have that in every bread variation they offer. Also, the breakfast sandwich is GOOD and FLAVORFUL. A lot of places put together a sandwich with no flavor, don't melt the cheese, cold, etc. This one was the opposite. I went two days in a row and will be back tomorrow since they're open every day until 3. The staff was friendly, the cafe is small and cute, and the food came out fast. They make a great coffee too. I got a vanilla matcha latte with oat milk and toffee syrup and it was fantastic. They also sell different types of boxes of teas and sell them individually for people to try too. The orange blossom caught my eye. At the register there is an assortment of pastries so I got a blueberry muffin because it looked so moist and pretty and it ended up being the best blueberry muffin I've ever had and my partner agreed. I love a perfect cafe and this was it.

Sandwiches came out quickly but protein bowl, which is pretty much just a fruit bowl, for some reason took forever. Everyone had long since finished their sandwiches when it finally came out. No explanation or apology. We weren't looking for much, but staff probably should have said something, especially since we'd asked if it was coming soon. All in all I wouldn't be disappointed to come back, but there are so many great cafes, coffee shops and restaurants in Durham that I'd go to one of the other ones first.

The staff was friendly and service was prompt. The coffee options were plentiful, with options for whatever your preferences may be whether you're more of a coffee enthusiast looking for lighter roast to taste all the notes, or enjoy more flavored and decadent drinks. One thing that was an incredibly exciting surprise the last time I went were the whole beans they had for sale from Fritz Coffee (imported from Korea im pretty sure). I had to grab a bag despite them being a bit pricey as they were freshly roasted too (price was expected for something like that). A slight down point for me though was the food, got a couple chocolate chip cookies and they were very much not worth it. Overall though would highly recommend and will likely return, though do need to be careful of timings as there can be quite the rush due to high demand.

Pairing with the yogurt made it taste a lot better though. Service was friendly and the prices were reasonable. It was a bit noisy inside, just because there were a lot of customers and everyone was talking. The store is clean and bright with a neat little riser on one side. My only complaint was that there were no refills. That's unusual for black, drip coffee.
