    Jasmine milk tea with tapioca

Ordered at a kiosk and got my drink and onigiri relatively fast! The Yaya chicken onigiri was pretty standard (maybe a little spicier than expected too!), Jasmine tea with tapioca balls was nice but not as flavorful as I've had elsewhere. Chill place to come and study!

A good amount of tea and food options on the menu. The kiosk inside made it easy to order and customize your drink to your liking. I liked the dedicated section on the menu for just vegan items. A nice addition. There's a few spots for photo taking with your tea.

So if you like listening to Daya And you think that you're sort of a Playa When in Chapel Hill You will get quite a thrill If you stop for Boba at Yaya Owned by Yaya Toure (and his brother Kolo), perhaps they should have stuck to soccer? A friendly but disappointing boba shop in terms of the fact that I don't really like the products here - much like the ones in New York City, at their location in Chinatown of Manhattan. I'll have to try the fruit teas next time I come through here to see if they could be better, but I don't remember liking the NYC one, and I tried several fruit teas there. And the milk teas at this location were meh AF. There are about six of these in New York City and then I always thought they weren't anywhere else in the world and boom, what do you know, it's right here in Chapel Hill. Maybe somebody in the family went to school in Chapel Hill? Who knows. That would be my guess. In any case I don't really like the products are very much but it's a lovely place to hang out and a great place for people spotting, and while Cha House down the road is unimaginably good, this place has a very friendly girl here and is more low key and chill compared to the insane and deserved popularity of its neighbour and rival.

Great selection of snacks!! Japanese rice ball: Fantastic. The drinks are pretty good too, though limited selection compared to other places. Definitely coming back to try the other snack items.

Good customer service goes a long way and, on our first visit they got it just right. This was the first time we ordered a tea on a touch-screen kiosk, and it makes me wonder if they had this before the pandemic. We got one green and one black tea but the black tea was impossibly bitter. It was so bitter that adding extra sweetness (however they do it here) didn't make any difference, so we were forced to take it back for another green tea instead. The staff literally didn't ask any questions and honoured our request. Their boba fell apart a bit but had a decent flavour, and so was their iced tea. Their takeaway tea cup was cool with the concave bottom, but it does give you the illusion that there's more boba than there actually is, so there's that. All in all, I'd be interested to see this place with the room fully open. I hope they do well.

The Onigiri and yummy tea is a must try! We never visit the Triangle area without a stop at Yaya. The tea bottle is super cute and their fruit teas with optional popping boba is a personal favorite. I was pleasantly surprised at the available options on the menu. We got the rice balls to go since I have yet to find any in Charlotte we really like. They even taste great the next day. Hopefully they'll open a location in Charlotte so we can visit more often.

Absolutely a place to stop by for Asian snacks, rice balls and fruit teas. Love the vibe

    lavender tea latte with tapioca!

I am not a big fan of tea. I don't drink chai at home, and I usually don't like black tea at any boba shops. So at Yaya, I opted for the lavender tea latte with tapioca balls. Considering I don't really like much tea, it was delicious. Hopefully I can return and expand my palate a bit! Their spring roll is very good and can be made vegetarian. They also have a decent sized shelf of Asian snacks, where I bought my absolute favorite (nori maki arare, or rice crackers wrapped in seaweed) for the first time in a long time.

I was on Franklin street for a lantern event that was sponsored by Yaya Tea, so I figured that I might as well check it out. I had heard that the onigiri here was great while the bubble tea was okay. While onigiri honestly aren't hard to make, getting great ingredients is not always easy. And when there's a vegetarian, getting great ingredients is kind of a headache. Fake meats tend to be dry, and they really don't taste great in onigiri. So when I came here and saw all the vegan options, I was really excited! The regular options also looked great. I got the Yaya chicken and a Gong Bao chicken (fake chicken). They messed up my order, but replaced the wrong order. So after I finally started eating about 15min later, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the onigiri are. The furikake is a little spicy, but otherwise the real chicken and the fake chicken were well seasoned and delicious. Would definitely recommend getting some onigiri. On the other hand, the teas look super sweet and full of flavoring syrups. After watching them make several drink with a ton of flavoring syrups, I decided to not even get any tea. The price is pretty expensive for watered down flavoring syrups, so I probably won't recommend trying the teas here unless you like super sweet drinks. Bottom line: it's a pretty great place for snacks, cute accessories, and onigiri, terrible place for fruit tea or bubble tea. For bubble tea, go to Milk lab or Kung Fu tea instead!

My first two rolls took a while to come out, but I think that was because one of the rolls I ordered was fried. My last two rolls came out much quicker and I ordered those one at a time. AYCE dinner was $26.99, and I felt like I got my moneys worth with 26 pieces of sushi (10 of those pieces were HUGE pieces of sushi too). Appa Roll (5): This roll was pretty, green, and tasty! I loved the shrimp tempura and avocado combination. Even though this was a 5 piece roll, the pieces were big, so it was just as filling as the standard 8 piece. TNT Roll (5): I enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't get this one again because it is fried and has cream cheese (too filling when you are trying to do AYCE). I really liked the mango in the roll, so I want to try their other rolls with mango! The pieces were huge, this roll was more filling than the standard 8 piece. Chapel Hill Roll (8): My favorite roll of the night, I loved the different fish on top and the avocado was delicious. Salmon Lover Roll (8): If you like salmon and avocado, this roll is for you! A lot of other salmon forward rolls have cream cheese, so I loved that this one had avocado instead. Delicious! I look forward to coming back with a friend or my husband so we can share rolls and try even more varieties!

I had already looked at the menu online and knew what I wanted: shoyu ramen. The order was served with a spoon, a side plate and a paper towel. There was 1 soft-boiled cut into two halves and ample amounts of scallion, menma and braised pork belly. The latter had a rich flavor, helped in no small part by the pork and chicken broth. Not only that, the broth complimented the rest of the ingredients; the egg was enjoyable. My only (minor) complaint is the portion size of the ramen itself. It was smaller than I would like. The lady that served me was probably (best guess) the owner. Her service was impeccable. In addition, Kinoko has a pleasing amenity not found in most restaurants: an AC outlet at every table that was by the wall. This was very handy for a heavy user of laptops and phones like myself. Although there was music playing in the background, it wasn't loud. The server and I were able to hear each other, and I could also hear the voices of others at the bar. The restroom had an interesting decor of newspapers for wallpaper. That was something I didn't see elsewhere. If you love good ramen, come to Kinoko Ramen. If you like a quiet place to dine in, come to Kinoko Ramen. Perfect scores in food, service and atmosphere.

It wasn't crowded, but it was doing a lot of takeout for a ramen spot (generally a food best enjoyed fresh). The mala ramen (a mix of spicy and tingly sensations) that I sought delivered on the premise. It was a fascinating flavor mix, with some harsh notes that would be a discovery for those that haven't had mala before working well because of the balance of salty and savory flavors and some nice greens and sweet corn. It was unique and I enjoyed it. They had some appetizers and things that I wasn't hungry enough for, but I did wash it down with tea. It was a very reasonable price given how the hipster ramen market has gone. And they had enough menu options that returning would be worthwhile. I ended up going to the other local ramen place anyway the next day, and I would say that both were really good. You can't go wrong.

The Food We ordered the Shrimp Katsu ($16) with rice and the Beef Teriyaki ($18), since they were out of the Salmon Teriyaki. A major red flag was hearing a series of loud microwave beeps immediately after placing our order. The food came out after 10-15 minutes. The Positive: Both of our meals came with excellent rice that was fluffy and fragrant, and a small side salad with a standard ginger dressing. The Disappointment: My Shrimp Katsu was highly disappointing. It tasted nothing like shrimp and resembled processed meat, similar to imitation crab, but shaped like mozzarella sticks drizzled with sweet mayo. The texture and flavor were clearly not fresh shrimp. My wife's Beef Teriyaki was also underwhelming. The beef was chewy and served over soggy lettuce, with a very basic, overly sweet teriyaki glaze. The Service The lone waitress was polite but demonstrated poor customer service skills. The most jarring part of the meal was when she began to hover near our table while we were eating, making us feel rushed. At 8:20 PM, she told us they were closing at 8:30 PM, pressuring us to finish quickly. Their Google listing clearly states a 9:00 PM closing time. As someone who tries to support local Asian cuisine, I was genuinely disappointed by both the low quality of the food and the pushy, rushed service. We will not be returning. Too expensive for low quality food.

Some rolls were a bit too sweet from the sauce, others a little salty from the roe. It was creative, but nothing that really blew me away. The place has a nice warm wooden table vibe and the lighting is good for photos. Service was quick, no long wait. Price-wise, it felt a little expensive for Durham -- four rolls and we weren't super impressed with the value.
