The bloom is off the rose of this perhaps once-proud establishment. I was in need of a solid black suit when the LivingSocial coupon came up for a suit, shirt and tie ($1,056 value for $699). According to the deal I was to choose from any fabric from a specific British manufacturer. Two weeks later I walked into the shop and was told because I had waited too long, only a few bolts of material were left for the LivingSocial deal, and if I wanted a solid black suit, I would have to choose another, more expensive fabric. I knew I was being upsold, but because Peter Navin, the proprietor, was such a smooth salesman and I needed a suit for a special occasion in two months, I decided to go along with price increase. I had to pay another $240 in full up front. It took Navin's a month to make the suit. I was told this was due to the overwhelming response from the LivingSocial deal which caused Navin to: 1.) Hire another employee to deal with the stampede of customers 2.) Lose money on every suit he made 3.) Swear off ever running another LivingSocial offer. It took 5 separate fittings to try to effect alterations needed after the suit was made. Either a change to the lapels made the shoulders go out of whack, or the promised alteration was never done (waist needed to be taken in). Navin blamed my average, middle-aged body on the fact the suit was not fitting right. He said if I wanted a suit to fit perfectly, I would need to have it "bench fit" which would add about $3000 to the cost. Finally after two months, the occasion I needed the suit for was upon me, and even though it still did not fit correctly, I had to walk out with the merchandise as-is. But before I left for good I found Navin had already run another LivingSocial offer, despite his statement (#3 above). Throughout all my visits, I was the always the only customer in the store. And as I walked out, I saw the same few bolts of material as were there on my first visit waiting for the next sucker. The upcharge as well as the prevarications left a bad taste in my mouth. But worst of all was ending up with a suit that doesn't fit. I will not be doing any more business with Navin's. read more

I knew that I never had a suit that fit, but I still felt like a pulled it off with an A+. Now, I know the difference. Peter showed me how to wear a real suit, what the difference could be. This was the best experience I could have hoped for. A real gentlemen's gentlemen, who has been doing this longer then I have been alive, at 31. The material of the shirt was impeccable, the lining of the jacket and vest or gorgeous. I think my girlfriend was even a little surprised. I can't thank him enough for his years of experience, interesting conversation, good prices for such a high priced item (i used a groupon, it was the best high end item I ever bought thru them). All I can say is, now that I know, I'll never go back. I don't expect to get a new suit every year, but if I can convince my friends to get at least one great suit like I bought, it will be well worth it. If I ever need anything in the Sacramento/Northern Cali area, I know who I will call. Peter has been making suits, shirts and slacks for over forty years. He is a true tailor, and his work reflects his expertise and knowledge. I have had other suits custom made by other tailors, from New York to Hong Kong, and his eye for detail is among the best. I happen to be have a larger build, and so off the rack suits have always been a problem for me. Peter's eye for what will look best is very good. Understand that Peter is hand making clothes from the fabric you select and you begin to appreciate the final product. His in house tailor, Petrov, knows exactly how clothes should fit. His memory is amazing. I walked into the store after six months and he immediately knew I had lost about three pounds......who can spot that? Three pounds? He said, "i will make the adjustment". And he did, perfectly. If you want fine clothing, respectful attention and something you will keep for life, go see Peter. And yes, Peter is not inexpensive. But he is worth every penny. read more

Navin's saved me! I had a last minute issue with my suit pants for a wedding. I arrived in Sacramento from LA with less than 24 hours to buy new pants and get them to fitting correctly. After buying the pants I showed up to Navin's 5 minutes before they close to get them fitted. While Navin's makes custom suits, and normally doesn't tailor other company's suits, I needed a professional I could trust given the time frame. Nevin's made an exception for me, and turned the pants around to a great fit by 2pm the next day. I can't thank them enough, and hope to return for a custom suit in the near future! read more

What a HORRIBLE experience. Save yourself the headache and worry, and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. First of all, I want to preface that this review has nothing to do with the quality of the suits that come out of this shop. I wouldn't know what they are like, despite my fiance having been told he would have a fitting for his custom suit before Thanksgiving (we're now a week away from Christmas). I will update this review if and when we actually get the suit. So, my fiance and I are getting married in February, and he decided that he wanted to buy a nice, custom suit (he had a specific vision in mind). He isn't asking for much in our wedding, and he doesn't currently own any formal wear, so I thought yeah, we should get him something he'll be able to use for a long time. We knew we wanted something really nice, but we're both young and know nothing about suits so we needed to not only find somewhere higher end, but also somewhere trustworthy as well. So I researched online suits, tailors, all sorts of stuff, until we decided on Navin's due mostly to their reviews and proximity (it's about 2 hours away, but we live in a small city). I now wish I had read the negative reviews more thoroughly.... So we arrive at the shop on Thursday, October 24th. Peter Navin and his assistant were wonderful! They were kind and helpful, and really helped us figure out what to get. Then after our deposit of almost $1,000, they sent us on or way saying the suit should be ready for an initial fitting before Thanksgiving. Well Thanksgiving came and went with no word from Navin's, so my fiance called them on December 6th asking for an update. Peter responded with excuses as to why it wasn't yet finished: we are super busy (then don't promise it so quickly), there was someone who got bumped up on the priority list (ummm, we're paying customers and have a wedding deadline... so no.), I can't find your paperwork (we already paid almost $1000 so you better have some paperwork from us), etc., etc. He then apologizes and says he'll "roll out the red carpet for us" next time. My fiance is patient though, so he says he doesn't need a red carpet, just to be treated like the paying customer he is, and that he understands, but when can he come in to get it fit and finished? Peter is not sure, so he says he'll give my fiance a call back tomorrow. Well tomorrow comes and goes, with no call. After the weekend, my fiance calls again on December 10th for another update. This time, it's "oh no, my assistant must have misplaced the card with your information, blah, blah, blah..." My fiance, a little less patient this time, says that's ridiculous since he spoke to Peter HIMSELF 4 days previously. Peter once again promises he'll call back in a couple days with a day and time my fiance will be able to come in to try on his suit, and once again promises to "roll out the red carpet." Well 6 days later on December 16th, with no call YET AGAIN, my fiance calls furious. Our wedding is now in less than 2 months, and we have no idea if he'll even have a suit. He expresses this frustration to Peter, with not nearly as much patience as he had had previously, only to have Peter constantly interrupting and talking over him with more excuses. Not only is it bad enough to have to be given more excuses after 2 weeks of not being able to return a phone call, but Peter has the audacity to interrupt and talk over the complaints of his customers. So at this point I (approaching Bridezilla mode) decide I want a first hand account. I call Mr. Navin and ask why the suit isn't ready, and why my fiance hasn't been receiving the phone calls he's been promised. This time, it's because "the phone's have been a pain in the butt" and no mention of why the suit isn't ready a month after we were told it would be. I began to tell him that phone issues are no excuse for any business to not be accountable to their customer, but then I was rudely interrupted with more excuses. I calmly waited for him to finish before informing him that he interrupted me. His response: "That's what your fiance said, too." Well guess what, Mr. Navin? Interrupting is incredibly rude, condescending, and it shows that you don't care what your customer is saying. We finished the conversation with him apologizing and me saying we'd be there next Monday (December 23rd) for my fiance to try his suit on, so it better be ready. I hope I will be able to update this review with a happy ending, but I am certainly not keeping my hopes up. Unfortunately, if Monday doesn't work out, my next step will have to be reporting my deposit as fraud to the credit card company so we can start from scratch and hopefully get a suit in time for our wedding. read more

Extremely rude employee bundled with poor customer service. I mentioned that I was shopping around for a suit before going overseas for work and the salesman automatically assumed I was wasting his time for some reason. I guess he thought there would be a better selection overseas so he figured I would not purchase anything. However, I need the suit before I get to my overseas location. Another employee heard the conversation and didnt step in to apologize or assist with me needs. I therefore walked out and decided to take my business elsewhere. Never coming back. read more

The owner pretends to agree and then makes the suit as he desires, rather than as the customer desires. My husband wanted pleated, cuffed trousers with his suit. It arrived with flat front, uncuffed trousers. Navin said there wasn't anyway to change the trousers and said that what my husband wanted wasn't stylish. My husband refused delivery and Navin refused any refund. Very discouraging. It was supposed to be a nice anniversary gift and the entire suit was ruined by trousers that didn't flatter my husband's physique. I would never go back! Don't trust him. read more

I have always bought nice off-the-rack suits. I thought they fit me fine, and that I looked great. A few years ago, I found myself in Panama, and for kicks I had a suit made at La Furtuna ("The Tailor of Panama"). It quickly became my favorite, and people are always commenting on how great it looks. People really do notice a custom tailored suit. Though I love my Panama suit, it's no longer my favorite. It's second to the absolutely f'n FANTASTIC, beautiful suit I had made at Navin's. Off of a Groupon, I decided to check Navin's out. I made an appointment, and met with Mr. Navin. He knows style and fashion, and after a few minutes he must have determined that I don't, and he went into full-service mode (look out Nordstrom). Together we found a fabric and lining I loved off of the rolls of designer fabric he had in stock, and decided on a cut and style. Then he showed me the choices of material for shirts. Great selection. Like the suit I was having made, they actually MAKE the dress shirts from the rolls of material to your specifications. After I made some choices on material, collar style, etc, I was measured. I'm not talking about chest, inseam, arm length, etc like I was used to, this was serious (I apparently carry one shoulder slightly lower than the other - who knew?). This stuff was going to be made to fit me exactly. Although suits generally fit me well, I was especially excited because with my average frame and my unusually huge 17 1/2 inch neck, I have NEVER found a dress shirt that fits me right, even after extensive alterations. A month goes by, and I go in to try on my suit and shirts. PERFECT FIT. Wow. I will never buy another off-the-rack suit again, and I certainly will not buy another off-the-rack dress shirt. In fact, when I picked my stuff up, I ordered a couple more shirts (they keep all of your specs on file). Great place. With regard to the one negative review I see on Yelp, it's clear that the the term "tailor" has been watered down by strip-mall alterations shops that don't MAKE anything. This is a real custom bespoke tailor shop where they make custom suits, shirts, and dresses from scratch. (What's "bespoke"? Go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bespoke) It' isn't Alterations to Go. I had a great experience getting measured and suited by Peter. His store is filled with rolls of gorgeous fabrics, assortments of buttons and furninshings, and the floor plan is spacious. He manages to walk the line between having classic taste and keeping up to date. I came in with a standard british cut in mind and he immediately referred me to the latest issue of GQ with a style (still british) that was both modern and much more flattering to my nonstandard body type (wide chest to waist). I found him very personable and we had a great chat about his family and life as a 'young guy' while taking my measurements. The suit itself came with an impressive array of details: lined cuffs and armpit holes, functional pockets and sleeve buttons [which aren't common, check your suits], elastic banding on the inner lining of the pants, the list goes on. The shirt and pants I ordered fit perfectly, there was even single break in the pant legs--a key detail and the sign of a proper hem. The suit came out a bit wide at the hips, and Peter was very gracious in taking it back to his tailor (who also has a very pleasant demeanor) to get it fit. Peter's clientele (nameplate professionals, players on the Kings, and Bob Hope!) and decades of experience speak plenty to his quality of workmanship, and I'm proud to have a suit made from his shop. read more

An exceptional tailor, to say the least. He is very knowledgable about his craft and the various styles, which I love, because I am partial to English suits, despite the Italian style being popular now. There are so many options to choose from, he has fabrics brought in from everywhere and they're absolutely gorgeous. The craftsmanship of the suits are unparalleled and they feel great. During my last visit, I'd lost quite a bit of weight between the time I ordered the suit and when I had my second fitting (almost 50 pounds), and I was still losing weight. He adjusted the measurements, subtracting an extra inch for good measure, and had the suit resized before the end of the week. It exceeded expectations and really blew me away. Whatever you have in mind for your next adventure, I have no doubt that Mr. Navin will go above and beyond for you, as he's done for me. Navin's is one of the few places in Northern California where you can find custom made designer suits and shirts and I have looked everywhere from Sacramento to San Francisco. The service provided by master tailor Peter Navin is excellent and unlike any other I have come across before. I went to his website at navins.net and sent him my measurements through his web interface. When I showed up at his Sacramento store, he had a wide array of designer fabrics to choose from. He also took the time to show me recent styles from fashion magazines to help me choose the perfect suit for a wedding I had to attend. The suit is very well made and, compared to what I paid before, very reasonably priced. I also recently lost some weight and unlike previous tailors, he altered my suit free of charge. As an added bonus, I didn't realize that the Sacramento Kings players visit him frequently to have suits made. I got to meet one of them when I stopped by. I'll definitely be back! read more

Worst tailor ever. I prepaid for a custom tuxedo. 3 weeks later no contact. I call them up to complain what's taking so long. Speak with Peter Navin himself saying what's taking so long he said 2 weeks for a fitting. He gets all huffy and puffy and starts shouting at me saying we are not in Asia and hangs up the phone. He realizes his mistake calls me back gets upset again and hangs up the phone on me again. Only thing I wish was a zero star to give him. read more

I am of short stature and always found it very difficult to find a suit that would fit me. When I turned 60 years old I decided to purchase a hand made suit. I made an appointment with Mr. Navin. I have to say that I made him earn his money due to my stature. When I tried on the finished product I actually cried. "Please don't come here again". This is what the gentleman at the front desk, which I think was Mr. Navin, said before I left the store. I am a complete novice when it comes to suites and I looked up places on Yelp where I could get my two suites altered. I checked out a few places to get a quote for alterations and finally I went to Navin's. I walked into the store and asked the gentleman at the front desk if I could get a quote for alterations of my two suites. He asked whether I wanted alterations or pricing and I hesitantly said alterations. He asked one of the tailors to mark up my suites based on my fitting and, at the end, the tailor politely told me the amount it would cost me get my suites altered. Since the prices that he quoted were almost four times higher than the previous quotes that I had received at other places, I was quite frazzled. I told him that I will try to find other places and return if I don't find a better deal. Suddenly the gentleman at the front desk got all mad and began talking down on me by showing his high quality rolls of garments in the store. In a very condescending tone, he said that I entered the wrong place and tried to explain it to me by using a weird analogy. He said he wouldn't have wasted his time on me if he knew that I was not going to get the alterations from his store. And then at the end he said "please don't come here again". I would have been fine with paying for his time for measurements if he had told me so upfront. I am not obligated to get my suites altered at his store only because his tailor took my measurements. I am sure other people who are not as ameature as me and know what they are looking for would have a better experience at Navin's, but I just wanted to share mine. read more

I am 28 years old and i purchased Groupon for a custom made suit from Navin's. This if my first experiences with getting a custom suit made, I got to be honest I was kind of confused and nervous of how it would turn out. Once I made my appointment to come with Mr Navin i was greeted with open arms, he almost treated me like I was a regular costumer. He sat down with me for a over an hour showing me picture from GQ magazine, letting me see all the new trends that young adults have been wearing. He expresses his love for making people look good. I also explain to him that I needed the suit in 7 days for a wedding event. He reinsured me that he will try his best to have it done by next week with no extra charge. Next week comes along and my suit is ready for pick up. Mr, Navin and his other tailor which is a wonderful gentleman both help me with the fitting. They were pretty meticulous on their work, they made many adjustments to my suit. They took my constructive criticism very seriously and made every little adjustment I wanted. I would recommend anybody in any age group to get suits made here. They care about what you look like and they show it right when you walk in the door. Couldn't ask for any better experiences. To put it plain and simple - Peter Navin is just not a man of his word. He offers a very friendly endeavor on your first meet however - it is a bunch of smoke and mirrors. I have given Navin's my business on two occasions. the 1st was custom made suit for my wedding. Great suit but even though I ordered it nearly 4 months prior - I got it just in the nick of time. The second was a custom fitted shirt to match the weeding party of which I was the best man. All of this was fully explained upon my ordering and pre-paying for it - a month ahead of time. I week out from the wedding I was assured that we are in good shape, although, no one ever did return my calls. After getting no where over the phone I went and saw Peter only to find out that my order fell to the bottom of the work orders for "larger jobs". Peter laughed and giggled acting as if this happens all of the time. I explained again the severity of the let down - "Peter, how do I explain this to the bride?" As I am a man of size I was left with no other option. The wedding took place and I stuck out like a sore thumb with a mismatched shirt.. I was under the impression that Navins's was a higher caliber establishment. I will not be doing any further business with Peter or his staff as I am not one who enjoys being toyed with or lied to - especially when paying for top of line product and service. read more

If you want to pay over $1,500 for a suit then this is your place. More expensive then the men's warehouse that's a fact. I came in here to buy a suit and I asked him to validate my parking ticket while I was looking inside the store and he tells me " no I won't do that unless you buy a suit from me" . wow That put a nasty taste on my mouth right away. The guy has no customer service skills that's for sure. We had a big talk about his expensive suits and he tells me his suits are so expensive because he pays his workers very well which makes no sense, cause I didn't see any workers at his store only him. He deserves no stars . As a business owner you have to ask yourself this question " do I want to have 10 customers a day or 0-1 a day? The place was empty and I was the only customer there but after talking to him I refused to buy from someone who looks down at people and feels he should overcharge customers in order for his business to succeed. I don't see his business lasting much longer. People take their money where they have reasonable prices. Maybe you should put a requirement on your door that says "Only the rich people are allowed".
