#17 Chicken Suqar
Kara D.

Nawal offers what I believe to be mostly East African and Mediterranean fare, including sambusa, injera, Somali stews, gyros and falafel. The service at Nawal is wonderful. I believe it was the owners who greeted us and explained the menu. They were very informative and friendly, which I value. Then they pointed out several things that were not available on the menu... it was actually easier pointing out what WAS available... The #17 Chicken Suqar ("soo-kar" with a Q, not "sugar") was photographed and explained as chicken breast stew with seasoned rice, salad (with veggies, tomatoes, limes), bananas, and hot sauce. I immediately said "YES I WANT THAT" at the counter. After we ordered, it came up pretty fast, within ~10 mins. However, I was a little disappointed it only came with rice and hot sauce. I asked for the salad, which they happily whipped up, and I forgot to ask for the bananas too (and regretted it later). My chicken suqar/stew was a rather dry, but it had good flavor. And be warned: the hot sauce is veryyy hot, but tasty too, and it seemed fresh. The serving sizes were generous, and I was able to reserve some leftovers. Overall, the owner(s)/managers are friendly and passionate, which I love. But the food fell short of my expectations, especially according to the menu description & photos.

I've always seen Nawal any time I've gone to Indigo Tea, which is about three doors down in the same mini strip mall. However, I've never tried it until today. To my knowledge, I haven't tried African food before either and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was! The space is small, with about five or so tables. I'd consider this place quick service. You order at the counter, pick your own seat, and then they bring your order to you. The host and owner (?) were very friendly and more than helpful in answering any questions we had about the dishes. I ordered the Beef Suqar (with a "q" and not a "g", which was what we thought it said) with Jabati - similar to Indian naan but thinner. The dish was so flavorful and aromatic! The beef was very tender and cut up into small cubes which made it so easy to eat. It was also mixed with sautéed onions and green pepper which I'm normally opposed to but I actually ate almost all of it and LIKED IT! That's saying something. I loved the spicy green sauce that came on the side. It gave it that extra kick but boy was I glad I didn't just pour all of it onto my dish because it was HOT! A couple other notes: - I appreciated that a drink (either soda or bottled water) was free with the meal. - The portion size was perfect for me! I felt satisfied afterwards but not uncomfortably full. Considering it's so close to my favorite tea place, I'll most likely be back again! I'm also really curious about the goat meat dish as it seems to be popular among African cuisine... we'll see if I'm brave enough to try it.

This place replaced the panda wok that only lasted 6 months this one seems to be a keeper whenever I drive by they always have cars parked out front meaning it's a favorite among locals already. Everything seems to be under $10 with big portions I was craving sambusa to eat and ordered a few take out. The cashier fried some up fresh before taking our cash. There's a tv and about 5 small tables if you want to eat in.

Great Vegetarian soup!!! If you like spicy ask for some of the yellow hot sauce.... Very good spicy!

First time here and I think I found a new place to eat at! Very reasonable prices, fresh food and excellent customer service! Sugar = small cube meat.... Learn something new every day!

Nawal Restaurant's Somalian and Mediterranean food is consistently excellent. The food is cooked to order, fresh, and attractively presented. The submitted photo captures not only the beauty of the flavorful food, but also the warmth and kindness of the chef who prepared it and brought it to the table. You'll be amazed at the excellent food value, particularly because the sauces, dips, and dressings are homemade and preservative free. The highest quality of rice is used. Every bite is pure delight!

Stopped by Nawal in the evening and ordered sambousa and Beef sugar. The sambousa is right on the spot and the beef sugar was very flavorful. I will definitely stop by and try the liver plate and falafel. Highly recommend.

One of the best breakfast spots in the suburbs! The Burnsville location is tucked away off the main…read moreroad by the hotels. There is plenty of free parking in a private lot. The restaurant is spacious and bright. Even though there's tons of seating, spots fill up fast! I came around 9am on a Saturday and was seated right away, but by 10am the entry room was full of people waiting for a table. -- The Northwoods Hashbrowns are absolutely delicious if you're craving a savory breakfast. The portion is huge and can easily be shared. The default hashbrowns are on the softer side, so I like to ask for it extra crispy so you get a better bite. It has the perfect amount of spice from the jalapeños and pepper jack cheese. -- The 49er Flapjacks are like the denser cousin of the crepe. The texture is so velvety and the butter just glides on. Absolutely delicious when it's smothered in butter and syrup. The 49ers are thin but they take up the entire plate, so it's still quite a bit of food. -- The cinnamon roll pancakes are arguably better than a standard cinnamon roll. It's the flavor of a cinnamon roll with the moist fluffy texture of a pancake. They do not skimp out on the cinnamon sugar filling or the maple cream cheese frosting. -- The cold brew is nice if you're looking for an iced coffee option, but it does taste a little watered down. It does not come with any refills. -- The thick sliced bacon is around 1/4 inch thick and is flavorful. You can ask them to cook it to your desired crispiness level.

The orange juice is amazing - don't miss it…read more Service was poor this time as our server never came back to refill drinks or check on us. My husbands pancakes, eggs and ham were good. My cheesy hashbrowns were great. The avocado benedict was also very good. It was the poor service and having to wait 20 minutes for the check that lost a star on the review.

Came here to celebrate a birthday with family. A nice, big space...a little too loud the night we…read morecame but that's okay. My dinner was especially good....the chicken fried perfectly...all dark meat the way I like it. The potato salad was not what I expected but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm used to a mayo based potato salad but this was even better with lots of flavor! The corn was also delicious. Everyone was very happy with their dinners. The chicken and waffle dish was also good. Ratio of breading to chicken was perfect and perfectly seasoned. The honey butter that came with it was also delicious. The New Orleans shrimp bowl was great too. The ratio of shrimp, which was perfectly cooked, to rice was good. Lots of great flavor. I think that everyone in our party enjoyed what they ordered. The only "ding" would be the service. We had to ask for silverware so we could eat and had to wait for straws because she forgot. I'm still going to give it 5 stars even though the service was lacking a bit. She was very nice but seemed rushed.

What a disappointment today. Party of 4 to celebrate a birthday. I suggested the restaurant and was…read morequite surprised by how drastically different this visit was compared to the previous. I ordered the Social salad. It was good but the presentation was trash. I also got a cup of the She - Crab soup. It was also just okay and certainly overpriced. Husband got the Pork Belly Burnt Ends at my suggestion. He asked if they had sauce added to them and if so, to get it on the side. Our server said they are prepared and the sauce caramelizes so no, no sauce. He asked due to being a type 1 diabetic and needed to calculate his insulin. Well, they came out covered in fresh sauce and were too dry to swallow. There were six chewed up bits of pork left on his plate when it was cleaned away. The Texas toast was the only redemption. Lastly the two others shared the half bird entree. Presentation was haphazard and the chicken was visually dry looking. They ate most of it and said the biscuit and sweet potatoes were good. The food alone wasn't bad enough to keep me away; but combining it with the service was. Our server Laura (sp?) didn't make her debut well after we've been sitting 10 minutes. We were there at 5:30 on Sunday. It wasn't busy at all. She was very nice. Her second stop was to take our orders. Food runner came and asked if we needed anything else. I asked for water as my glass was bone dry (I even ate my ice) and others' were 1/4-1/3 full. She said she couldn't bring beverages. It's water...not vodka. Weird. So Laura eventually comes back and filled our drinks and left the bill. She did overhear the birthday happenings and was nice enough to offer a free dessert. She got her cash payment and we never saw her again. Maybe it was the end of her shift? It just felt off. The table next to us had quite a few complaints and had a different server, so maybe there was just a bad vibe with the staff today? Hopefully management can figure it out. Bathrooms were nice and decor was nice throughout the restaurant.
