That being said, I booked a table and we made our way over. Régine is apparently a popular spot - indicated by the rope they had set up outside which suggested that a line can form. Since we booked a table, and it was a Monday morning, there was no line and we were seated right away. The restaurant is broken up into two main dining areas with large windows that let in a lot of light. The decor was tasteful but not my style - it definitely gave off that afternoon tea feel with upscale accents and an overly feminine aesthetic. It was nice but just not my taste. The menu has a really good variety of breakfast and lunch items - I was taken aback by how many creative dishes there were, not just standard breakfast items. I needed caffeine, so I started with a cappuccino which was really good, one of the better ones I've had. For my actual breakfast I went with the Chic Croissant; this was essentially a breakfast sandwich with pulled ham, egg, arugula, and an aioli. Due to the fragility of the croissant, I did not eat it as a sandwich - but despite that the dish was delicious. Everything tasted super fresh and all the flavors worked really well together. I don't think I ever had pulled ham before, but felt it was super creative and elevated the sandwich. We wanted to try some of their bakes, so we also got the cinnamon roll and the scone. We were given the option to have the cinnamon roll covered in frosting but we opted to have it plain. Even without the frosting, the roll was excellent - I usually find cinnamon rolls to be dry, but this was super m-o-i-s-t with a generous filling of raisins and cinnamon; it was one of the best I've had. The scone was lavender and white chocolate; I don't usually like lavender but this was pretty good and not overly heavy. It came with sides of macerated strawberries and mascarpone which I don't think were needed but nice to have. Service was great - everyone was warm, friendly, and efficient. Overall, Régine Café exceeded my expectations - the food was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to return for another meal. I understand why this is one of the more popular spots for breakfast and brunch in Montreal.

The walls are covered with record album covers and photos. In the front of the restaurant is a long counter, with cloches and serving dishes full of huge muffins and cookies (they all looked bloody amazing!). All in all, it's a very warm and casual interior, and it feels like an old pair of favorite slippers. Comfortable and unassuming. We sat at a booth where my folks always sit, and although their usual server wasn't working that day, we had Devon (and she was wonderful). We had a variety of meals: mom had blueberry pancakes (lots of blueberries! She loved it), and my kid and my dad and I had a variety of eggs with bacon and toast and potatoes. It all was excellent. The bacon was crispy and they sure weren't stingy with portions (nice!), and the potatoes were great, too. I didn't have the coffee but the rest of my family did, multiple refills, in fact, and they all said it was excellent. Did I mention that the portions were very generous? I was, however, given my choice of meat so I chose ham. The benny was good - everything tasted fresh and the hollandaise wasn't too rich which is generally a concern of mine. Roasted potatoes and some greens were served on the side which complemented the eggs well. Service was good, we were taken care of promptly and everyone was friendly. I just had the breakfast plate which came with 2 super thick slices of bacon (steakon) , 2 eggs any style, home fries and 2 slices of toasted thick sourdough bread. That in itself was filling. They really take their diner credentials seriously. They served my tea in a Fireking Jadeite cup and saucer straight out of the1950's. I know because ever since Martha Stewart started collecting the stuff, finding Fireking Jadeite pieces now is very difficult and prices have shot through the roof. The chrome fan, milkshake maker, chrome details around the bar, black and white photos of old Verdun and hanging plants also add to the retro vibe. Service was friendly and quick. They also give you a 15% discount if you go between 8-10am.
