The food was OK wasn't anything fancy of a sushi spot in Catalina Island it was mediocre too much hype but overall was good food not gonna complain. I took my girlfriend to Catalina for a special trip and we were here long enough for one lunch so we decided to give this place a try. I think most restaurants on the island are about the same ratings wise so I think you just need to try a place out and we were looking for some seafood. I would address something that other people have complained about which is the water situation. Yes they don't have free water. They only have bottled water. You don't have to buy the water it's your choice. Decor wise it's super basic in a good way. It gives a very much mom and pop vibe which is nice. Service wise, can't really say anything good or bad. It was fine. The real downer would be the food. We got the fish n chips with halibut (Yes our server suggested it but I was going to order it regardless). We also got the ceviche and Farnsworth Bank sushi roll. The best thing was the ceviche. I wouldn't say it was amazing but having mahi mahi was something different. The chips with it were a little stale. The fish n chips were okay. The fries were seasoned and the fish was confusing. I'm very certain that one piece was a different fish. The first 2 pieces were flaky and juicy but the 3rd piece had a completely different texture and was not juicy. I'm certain it was mahi mahi. The sushi was very disappointing. The spicy tuna on top was good and had some good flavor but that's the only good thing about it. The entire roll was just bland. The sushi rice didn't have the vinegar that comes with sushi rice. No saltiness no anything. It was just a roll with zero flavor despite looking tasty. I think it's a bit funny that it boasts using fresh fish but the meal didn't have anything fresh tasting. Maybe it's all fresh and it was just cooked to death. Probably won't be back to Catalina anytime soon as we had to take days off but if we came back, we know where we probably aren't eating here again. read more

My only critique of im asked would be less rice on the nigiri and thicker slices of that delicious fish. The Wasabi and pickled ginger, both very nice and I love how they serve low sodium soy sauce. They offer a seared option for $1 more, which i was tempted to get but would have preferred if they offered like a peppered option or like some sort of season with the sear. Ordered some fries. Cooked crisp. Fresh. Only critique would be to salt the fries. Otherwise, it truly was a cool vibe, staff was cool and music was also a cool lol vibe and feel. Came here based on a locals recommendation. They told us a local fisherman owns this and that they always bring in the freshest of catch! Walking in the place is pretty casual, we came on a weekend for lunch and there was no wait. Prices are pretty high for a casual joint, but they generally are high on the island. The fish and chips were crisp but definitely not anything special. They were served with fries and tartar sauce. The portion was a nice size, but definitely on the pricier side. The salmon nigiri was a medium sized and coated with sesame and scallion. The fish was fresh, but also nothing special. A great place to enjoy lunch in Avalon! I came to Catalina for a 4-day stay and was impressed eating here. The waiter was attentive and service was pretty quick. We both got the salmon poke bowl, where you can choose a base of rice, lettuce, or half & half. I got the half & half Salmon poke bowl and it was so delicious. The fish was well marinated and the whole bowl was tasty and very filling, consisting of cucumber, seaweed salad, edamame, masago, etc. It was very good for the price! Delicious! I loved everything about this place - great service, delicious food and a nice ambiance. My love for clam chowder was the main reason we came here but we also ordered the fish and chips. We enjoyed everything. You can chose from an array of different fishes for your fish and chips but I think we ended up getting halibut. Our Royal Caribbean cruise stopped at Catalina Island and I found this place near the port. Super quick walk. Excellent food! Lobster sandwich was really good (would love to try it hot instead of cold). The Mahi Mahi tacos were also really delicious. The garlic bread and NDMK fries were very good! Okay .......... there is more here than meets the eye. We've walked past this place many, many times but now we'll try more of their other dishes. Check out my pic of the top of their menu: their name NDMK stands for "endemic" and is based upon Catalina's surfing/fishing company created by locals. NDMK (pronounced "endemic") is a fusion fish house on Clarissa Street. The menu is 95% fish dishes, but they offer burgers and steak too. The fish that can be prepared to your liking (e.g. tacos, bowls, sandwiches, burritos, etc...) and you even choose the fish of your choice (tuna, mahi mahi, halibut, etc...) I had a grilled swordfish sandwich with their NDMK fries (fries with Japanese mayo and eel sauce) and my wife had fish tacos with seaweed salad. Wow.. this is a place that's being recommended all around and it's honestly awful. We walked in, there were two waiters seem lost, no one came to us for a few minutes and the we sat down. The shishito peppers were bad because they put teriyaki all over it- why do we need it sweet?! We went on a Saturday after a 50k/50 mile race, it was super busy and we almost got turned away because the sushi chef was an hour wait. We decided to just not get sushi and give it a try which worked and I am so glad we did! I went to a few restaurants in Avalon last weekend and NDMK Fish House was by far the best. Absolutely get the cioppino and the sashimi! You won't regret it. The cioppino was very well seasoned. The sashimi came in HUGE cuts. Not particularly how you would expect them to be served or cut in Japan, but they were delicious. There is a window just big enough for a bit of a beach view. It's nice. But you're not there to eat the view. Honestly, I've found that in Avalon, the best restaurants are the ones that don't have an ocean view. Service was good! We ordered 4sushi rolls, a ceviche, and two cups of soup (clam chowder and lobster bisque)...the soups were extremely salty yet flavorful. The ceviche could have seen better days a few days ago. The sushi was overly priced for its quality. The rainbow roll was good, but then again how can anyone mess up a rainbow roll? Wife ordered a ring of fire roll with roasted spicy crunchy garlic topping, but the topping tasted burnt and took away from the roll itself. Their ripper roll was a bland version of the rainbow roll topped with jalapeño slices and drops of chili oil. In all fairness, their canned watermelon drinks were delicious! Needless to say, we're not coming back...we paid for our food ($132 + 3.35% credit card fee, and tip) and left them about a roll and a half of untouched food. read more

Dining - Clarissa Avenue [Avalon, Catalina Island] After our short island adventure on a rented golf cart we were going to do some more shopping but scrapped that idea when we saw this restaurant that had the NBA playoffs showing on their flatscreen. I told the hubby let's eats here. We each ordered a bowl of clam chowder and shared an order of fish & chips with the local catch of the day... halibut. Omg... everything was delicious! Steamed halibut fish, inside a crispy, crispy exterior. I've had beer battered cod and pollock fish before but this is my first time having halibut. One bite into that golden crispy exterior revealed beautifully tender and flaky Pacific halibut. Perfection!! The fries were crunchy good too!! The clam chowder soup was a winner... rich, smooth, creamy, and wonderfully flavorful. They had clothing merchandise for sale with the NDMK (endemic) logo, inspired by surfing and fishing and evolved into a restaurant.
