My husband and I went here while visiting the island for lunch. It is tucked back off a side street and is pretty small. I didn't particularly love the atmosphere, it came off kind of cold and not welcoming, but the staff and manager were super nice. I can see it getting very crowded and cramped in here. My husband got the Make your own omelette, which he was excited about because he needs to customize his meals due to his restrictive crohn's diet. This allowed him to do just that! The eggs were cooked perfectly. I got the lobster ravioli and it was AMAZING. It came with a creamy tomato vermouth sauce, it was delicious. It came with a side of bread and was a good portion. Staff: James was our host and waiter for dinner. He was really friendly, attentive, and did a great job considering he was the only server on duty. It got pretty crowded and yet he was on top of his tables. Quality/Quantity: The food was really good. I had the swordfish sandwich which was my favorite dish after 2 days on the island. It was seasoned perfectly, savory, and apparently more tender due to being speared. Yummy! Others in my party had the fish and chips which were really good (flaky and piping hot), sushi which was pretty good, and the miso salmon. Though the salmon was good there was no really miso taste which was a small disappointment. Value: Fair considering that seafood isn't cheap. Saw this spot was highly rated on Yelp and figured we'd check it out after a long day of hiking. We waited a few minutes and were seated at the bar seats by the window. When we first sat down, we noted our area was a little dirty so we had to clean that off. We quickly realized how short staffed they were, I think there was one waitress serving the restaurant. It took a little longer than we waited to get our order taken, but the food came in a pretty reasonable time and was very tasty. The fish and chips were incredibly crispy, and the mahi mahi sandwich had great flavor. Nestled around the corner on Clarissa Avenue off of Crescent Avenue, NDMK (pronounced ENDEMIC) is a Fish house that serves fresh and delectable sushi creations and surprisingly a rather generous portion of ribeye steak available that is sure to satisfy any hungry visitor! The restaurant was open during our off-season visit to Catalina Islands (late January) and upon entering this cozy, shack-like establishment, we were greeted to a booth seat. The ambiance was casual with its sea blue painted interior and ocean paraphernalia decor, our waiter gave us a two-sided laminated menu to overlook as he served other guests. Once we got our selection ideas met, we asked our waiter for his sushi recommendations and they did not fail to meet expectations. My guest wanted to have a steak selection but thought Surf and Turf was a bit overpriced for off season ($99) so we opted for the Chefs Hand Cut 12 oz Rib Eye, medium-well with a side of rice, which was quite buttery! My guest enjoyed the steak, which was well seasoned and tender to taste. Our waiter recommended the FARNSWORTH BANK, which is Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avo, cucumber, jalapeño topped with unagi sauce, spicy mayo, crispy onions and this was surprisingly light and savory, despite the calories-pounded descriptions. His second recommendation was RATTLESNAKE ROLL, which is Unagi (freshwater eel), shrimp tempura, cucumber topped with avocado, eel sauce & green onions. This one was delicious as well, but similar in texture to the Farnsworth Bank roll. I ordered the GOT CRABS ROLL, which is Soft shell crab, masago, avocado, cucumber, carrots and it was savory and fresh - with just the right amount of crunchy texture to be enjoyable. Water was bottled 16oz ($1 each) which we ended up saving for our walk back to our hotel. So why the glowing review with one less star, you ask? Food enjoyment has much to do with service as well and even though we enjoyed the selections and recommendations, the service was a bit lacking in few areas. First, we were seated before a party of four came and was seated next to our table several minutes after. Although our order was taken before, their large order arrived first to their table. We were famished so this was a bit of a disappointment but we waited after they were fully served and several more minutes for our orders to arrive. Second was the requests overlooked by our waiter when we asked for smaller plates, as my guest and I were sharing our dishes family style. We didn't have space to put our portions on any other plate than the ones that the food came in. We asked our waiter twice before we enlisted help of another waiter. Unfortunately, even after that, the three waiters were perched nonchalantly on their ledge for few minutes before we were given our separate dishes. Although I do recommend their dishes, the service left us wanting. Lastly, when we received our bill, we were inadvertently charged with an alcoholic beverage we never ordered (the party of four next to us had). I did quietly addressed this to our waiter, who remedied it immediately, but it only confirmed what we had felt throughout our experience - he did not seem to pay attention well. read more

Extremely disappointing experience at NDMK Fish House. The miso soup was served cold, and our waiter never once checked in on us. Despite the heat, we weren't brought any water until 20 minutes after sitting down. Service was slow and inattentive throughout. Also they only serve bottled plastic water which you have to buy, no cups of water available. It's so bad for the environment and needlessly expensive. As for the food, the hand roll was soggy, and the sushi rice was oddly crunchy and undercooked. They gave us a tiny amount of wasabi and ginger to split between two people, and didn't even include soy sauce. With so many better sushi options around, I definitely won't be coming back. read more

My family and I are vegan, and ironically, a fish house had our favorite vegan meal, the tofu poke bowl. We ordered it without the masago (fish egg) and fried wonton (contains egg), on white rice. It was delicious and filling. Good beer here too, I got the local IPA. The vegan food in Avalon is scarce, so we went to NDMK three out of our four days here! SUSHI on Catalina. My wife really wanted sushi and I resisted saying we could get it better on the mainland. We did end up coming and I enjoyed the food we got here, its more fusion style and not traditional but some of the seafood is super fresh. Salmon Sashimi, I didn't get to try a single piece because my kids ate all of it. It's a sign that the fish was good quality. The only odd thing I noticed was green onions were sprinkled on top like garnish and it did give it an appetizing appearance but the pungent grassy flavor wasn't a good pairing with the mild salmon so we knocked it all off with chopsticks. Fried shrimp roll with avocado on top. Not sure what the name was but it was good. It's rolled much smaller than normal rolls and I actually prefer them more bit sized like this, the only bad thing was I think it was literally one layer of shrimp in the whole thing. To keep it simple, they had lobster on their specials which we made the mistake of ordering. The lobster itself was incredibly bland, tough, and basically came with what amounted to two small tails. The rice and shrimp was very tasty, but unfortunately we had numerous shrimp that were not deveined. This would all be disappointing for 30 bucks, but that's the thing. It cost 98 dollars. Apparently I should have known that despite lobster being on the specials, lobster season in Catalina island is in October-March. I have no complaints about the service or ambience, everything is in line with what we've seen thus far on Catalina island. I just don't think such subpar product, irregardless of how much it may cost for them to fetch at the market, should even be served. I'm certain the chefs know this lobster is not 98 dollars quality, at least not to just be served as such. If you go this time of year and want lobster, stick to a bisque. The service was good, the people were nice, but the only issue is that one person in my party wound up getting sick a few hours after our meal - we suspect it was mild food poisoning. We think it's from the oysters bc both of us recall the taste of them was not quite right. The fish and chips (halibut) was meaty and good. The sushi rolls were decent too, but lesson learned to be careful when choosing this restaurant as they may not be storing / preparing the food properly. I felt nauseous after a few hours later and couldn't stomach to eat anything for dinner. The person with me suffered from a case of mild stomach cramps and diarrhea that carried into today (the day after our meal). Again, we really wanted to love this place. Amazing seafood joint in Catalina! Quaint little spot, comfy atmosphere with excellent service. Food came out super fast for our large party. I had the Clemente Sandwich with NDMK fries. Lobster in the sandwich was succulent and sweet, and the sushi sauce/spicy mayo combo made the fries very addicting. They even had Cali Creamin' on draft, one of my favorite beers.
