I came here for an afternoon snack since I heard the beignets were good and they were pretty solid. These were made to order, so I waited around 7 minutes to get my beignets. These were around $6 for 3 small beignets which is kind of pricey, but that's pretty much the pricing for the whole island. The beignets were crispy, fluffy, and sweet from the powdered sugar. The service here was also good and the server taking my order was super nice. There's no indoor or outdoor seating. This is more of a grab n go type of spot. Really wanted to like this place, but it was meh. Was helped by a nice young woman who offered a half half of noodles and fried rice so I could try both. Portion was huge. Orange chicken had so much breading that I couldn't find the chicken inside. Kung pao shrimp had a nice sauce and crunchy veggies but the shrimp was also fried in too much batter. The only Asian food place in Avalon and it's just Chinese takeout food. It's greasy and salty but the varieties are not bad. It's weird that they don't always have hot and sour soup. We hear of Chinese food & donuts but how about Chinese food & beignets! Mr.T's Chinese Kitchen offers Chinese food Panda express style with all the entrees laid out. You can get fried rice or chow mein on the side with either 1 or 2 entree combo plate. Mr. T's also sells breakfast sandwiches, beignets, juices and ice cream. I arrived on Catalina Island hoping for some breakfast but the pancake houses were packed with a line out the door. I went down a small block and found Mr.T's with no line. I went in to get a two entree plate of spicy shrimp and kung pao chicken. While on a bumpy golf cart ride, I was munching on Mr.T's while enjoying the beautiful island scenery! Wow the shrimp was SPICY hot burned my throat and made me cough. Kung Pao was a little spice and bearable. I was thinking how funny it was that the girl who prepped my food asked if I wanted hot sauce. Im glad I said NO. Taste was pretty bland but a whole lotta spice. Not so sure about their food as we didn't have any as we mainly came here for their beignets. Saw from a fellow foodie how good their beignets were and had to check them out since we were there for the day as it was one of the stops on our cruise. For a little over $6, you get 3 beignets. They are a lot smaller and cost more than ones I've had from New Orleans or at the Disney but they're pretty tasty and made fresh once ordered. A nice little place to get a taste of the sweet treat of beignets. It's a small mom-and-pop kinda shop and doesn't have seating on the inside but there are a few tables out front to have lunch or a treat. read more

It was strange that I wanted Chinese food on Catalina, but I stumbled upon this kettle gem. It was next door to my favorite breakfast spot on the island. Unfortunately dues to Covid jacks was closed. I saw a few mixed reviews. First of all you have to remember all of the food on the island cost a bit more. It is a seasonal vacation spot and the have to ship stuff from the mainland. I thought the food was really tasty with large portions. I would come back for sure. When I went the service was great and the two people that were working in there were very friendly. I love this place. Though I have never gone for breakfast (apparently the food is entirely different), I ALWAYS come for the Chinese. It's not authentic, but delicious. It's kind of like an even more delicious, hole-in-the-wall, Panda Express. The service is always instant and there is never a line. They have really awesome sauces and side dishes. I would specifically recommend their orange chicken, Chow Mein, and fried rice. It's in a central location among all the shops and Catalina tourism. Be sure to enjoy it on the beach!! read more

Avalon needs Asian food!! Without Mr Ming's it is seriously lacking, but this place kinda fills the space. Good fast food, no sit down like Ming's but the food is good with decent portions. I hate to do this....but first off, the hours are horrible....they close at 3pm. Also the name is a bit deceiving...you would think a bake shop would have cupcakes, or pie, or some other pastry besides donuts? I grab a pan dulce concha (Mexcian sweet bread...one of the only non-donuts in the joint) and a $1.50 choco chip cookie for the wife. It is located inside the Original Jack's Restaurant Building on Catalina Ave, tucked between Avalon Liquor and the Lobster Trap. Their Bake Shop usually open at 7am and offers tasty breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and pastries but due to Stay at Home order they are only opening at 11:30am and closing at 7pm offering savory, authentic Chinese food. Last night Chad and I had the Chicken fried rice, beef and Broccoli, Kung pow chicken with Chow mien. It was made fresh and service was fast. It was exceptionally delicious and satisfying. This is not based on the quality of food that they have there. With the name having bakeshop one would think they sell cakes there but guess what they don't! When I decided a 4 day vacation to catalina for my hubbys bday I wanted to surprise him with a cake on the day of his bday. I called the shop and asked if I could place an order for a cake the guy who answered didn't know if they did that hmm don't you work there? Shouldn't you know? I asked he said NO! This review is for the Bakery, since the Chinese Kitchen was not available when we came. We didn't order much here, but the beignets and brownie we did order were really good. The beignets were a bit more towards the croissant type of dough than I've had other places, but they were still really good. The brownie was also really good and well worth the price.
