I've only ever seen Janelle (from the time she worked at Time Studio, Inc and even when she moved to Neal's salon) and she's always been great. She's well-versed in hair care and takes her time on her cutting, coloring and styling. Her portion of this review is FIVE STARS! However, I'm leaving a 2 star review for the nail services. I called the salon - which I only love 5 minutes from, back in May for an appointment with Phelisia. I was told that her calendar was full for June but would open on June 25th for July. I advised that I was a new client and would call back on the 25th to schedule. On June 25th, the salon was closed for business but the calls are still answered so I was told to call back on June 26th to schedule. On the 26th I was advised that as of the Saturday before (6/22), Phelisia told the front desk staff that she's not accepting new clients for July. I advised that I had been planning to make this appointment for 6 weeks and that fell on deaf ears. When I questioned when she'd be opening her books for new clients, I was told there wasn't a date (that it would likely not be 'forever'). I say all this to say, as a black-owned hair/nail studio that not only I patronized but have had others close to me patronize/become repeat customers (in the heart of Fort Greene where gentrification has taken over), it's important to communicate accurately so that people aren't taken by surprise like this. In my gut, I felt like this appointment would never happen anyway because the artist only provides a phone number on her IG page and doesn't answer direct messages regarding her services. Always a red flag, in hindsight. My recommendation: if you're looking for convenience, don't bother trying to book for Phelisia's book. The attached photo is from her Instagram story on 6/26 that still doesn't advise that she's not taking new clients but when you call and ask - they explain that bookings are for existing clients only. I sincerely feel for those who waited like I did only to be denied an appointment. A friend of mine actually decided not to pursue these services as well because of this. Just BAD BUSINESS! I'm not sure about the work of the other artist (Veronica) but one might have better luck getting in with her. Anything else is a waste of precious time to be frank. read more

Horrible experience, this is the worst salon in the area. I came in for a simple root touch up, the gentleman who was my stylist barely spoke with me. Did not consult me on the color or anything. I sat down and he walked away to mix the color... ok? This is the first time you're doing my hair & you don't ask what I want done. He mixed the color and left me leaning on the washing area while the color set, my neck was killing me. 45 minutes in a washing seat, while the salon was empty. Super unprofessional and trash customer service. My stylist barely spoke two words to me and didn't answer my questions. When I first walked in the reception kept telling me to go to the stylists chair & the stylist kept not so politely asking me to go sit by the reception until he was ready. Truly a shocking customer service experience. And the color did not take because he decided to do a demi dye without asking me! I was expecting permanent color.They offered to have me come back the next day for free to fix it - I obviously did not go back. I actually wish I could give this place a 4.5. The pros far outweigh the cons. Pros: 1. I love this salon. It is conveniently located across from BAM with pretty much every subway line within a few blocks. The environment is always clean and comfortable. Everyone here has been friendly and professional to me so far. 2. Kisa Alexander is THE BEST! She has a warm personality that puts customers at ease, and she is always willing to listen and give you exactly the look you are going for. She is very professional, keeps me laughing, and she takes her time to give each customer their individual attention in her chair. I have long, thick natural hair, and Kisa uses only the best products and minimal heat to keep my hair healthy and looking great. I highly recommend her! 3. They also have a new nail tech who is very creative and does great nails. I have seen her work, but I haven't had a chance to try her out yet. Cons: 1. As wonderful as it is, I have had to wait a considerably long time before anyone got started on my hair (even though I had appointments). I am pretty patient, but I could have gone to get something to eat in the meantime had I known there would be a longer wait. That brings me to my next point... 2. You cannot eat in the salon. The receptionist will swoop down on you with the quickness if you even look like you're about to unwrap some food. I do understand keeping the salon clean, but we all know how many hours a salon visit may take. Customers have to step outside to eat. For the amount of money I spend in this place, it would be nice to at least be able to eat in the waiting area. 3. It can get pricey. I pay $70ish for a blowout/press and $125 for a rod set. The reason I am giving this place a one star rating is because I made a Nail appointment and I showed up 10 minutes early I was told that she needed more time and it turned into an hour and a 1/2 after my appointment. When I was ushered up to the nail area I felt as a customer there was no concern for the fact I sat there and waited for an hour and a 1/2 the nail tech I scheduled was very rude because she was running her mouth with her client not being attentive to the fact that I was sitting there and Then after this she was confused that I had an appointment and how did I make the appointment that had nothing to do with anything. You know I made an appointment don't give me this confused look as though you were unsure. I left with no service. I would go back to support since the reviews and salon was nice. Well, I couldn't even make it in so this review is based solely on the fact that the receptionist hung up on me before I could even ask a simple question. Called to see what the price of a wash & blow out is (because I couldn't find their prices anywhere) and mid-sentence the receptionist hung up on me and sends me an automated text with instructions on how to book. Amazing. Healing. Stylish. Self care I went to the salon to get my second big chop with my sister who was going in for her very first natural hair cut. She has never had short hair so Roger cut and styled me first so that she could see that it's not so bad after all! Roger is a master and a true hair doctor. I had A LOT of hair and it's very thick. He combed my fro out gently and cut each curl and lock. Then washed and deep conditioned and then returned me to the chair for final styling. And he left me with a lovely curly fro. He then cut and styled me sister and got rid of the heat damage she had and resulted in a really chic hair cut that made her look even prettier than she already is! Later that week after admiring my sister's hair I decided to go lower (hey hair grows back!) I was able to book a same day appointment and Roger fit me in, giving me a bold low cut. We also had an amazing conversation on work/life balance and finding one's passion that I'm still thinking about! And after all this he said that it was no charge! So number one I found her on Instagram gram I was very excited to get my nails done because from her picture the nails looked perfect I've been obsessed with my nails since I was in jr hs also I was happy to support a young black person in the business world especially because I own my own business as well. My first appointment was not very welcoming but I gave her a pass she had the representative call me to make sure I wasn't last, meanwhile when I got there she was still with a client I waited 30 mins or more I don't want to drag it honestly but I waited, when she was done with her client she wasn't welcoming at all minimum conversation felt like she had attitude. The end result I was very happy with the way my nails came out I paid $95 + 20% tip I was so pleased I wanted to book my fill in appointment she insisted that I don't because the nails will likely last 3 weeeks, I explained I can only do weekends I run my own business Monday - Friday 7:30 to 6 pm she said it wouldn't be a problem just book with the salon when I'm ready. Fast forward to fill in; 3 weeks later 3 nails broke off I was okay with that I contact her on Instagram telling her I would like to book to told me to download a app I explain to her I didn't understand the app from then I should have said forget it because she was not every attentive during the conversation threw the messages she then apologized because she was with a client and told me I can call the salon or do it through the texts I made an 10 am on Saturday appointment through the texts 15 mins she texted me "Hi good morning the appointment that you booked for 10 AM on Saturday can't be honored because it's only an hour appointment slot and that's not long enough for any appointments. You'll have to rebook for another day. My apologies....... If you look on the app the availability for next weekend is still open so you can just choose whatever time works for you." I again told her I don't understand the app can I call the salon. She stated yes. When I called the salon I asked about next weekend the lady then told me she had an open appointment for 12 I said is that enough time for me to do my nails because Morgan stated that my services will take up to two hours the representative instead that there was time I was very pleased. Now Friday I get a text to confirm my appointment I confirm with no problem Saturday as I'm on my way to the salon from STATEN ISLAND I PAYED A 20 till sat in traffic to tell me she wanted to reschedule to 12:30 that was still okay then she called back again and said she can't do your nails because she told you didn't have an open appointment SO WHY WHEN I CALLED THEY PUT ME IN FOR A 12 o'clock appointment! And all the representative could do is agree with me on how unprofessional Morgan is and that this isn't the first time this had happened ! It's so sad despite the price of my nails I was really happy to support a young black female but I can honestly tell you she's not professional at all she definitely needs to work on her people skills and I honestly waited till the end of the day to write this review to see if she would even reach out and she did not. After going to a terrible salon in Bed-Stuy for the past 4 years, I finally did some Yelp searching and bookmarked Neal Farinah Salon. I called on a Saturday morning and was able to make an appointment later that morning at 11:30. Once I arrived, I was introduced to my stylist Crystal. She is friendly, intelligent, and most importantly professional. I've seen her twice now and I'm so pleased with her services. She keeps me informed every step through the process and has made me feel very comfortable. On my 2nd visit, I did have to wait about 30 minutes before she got stared on me but that's nothing in comparison to how long I had to wait at my previous salon. The salon is clean with a modern vibe. Another thing I love about it is that it is conveniently located next to many subway stations so it's very easy to get to. I went to this salon a couple years ago only because my go to stylist, Joel, transferred to this location. After getting my hair done one day I decided to get my nails done, there was a nail tech utilizing a space upstairs in the salon. This was honestly my first time going to a black nail tech and I wanted to give it a try and support a black female nail tech! During my pedicure she began being very rough on my big toes and told me my big toenail was ingrown. No body had ever told me anything like that prior to her. She proceeded and Her actions actually started to cause me pain so I had her stop and continue without trying to "fix" this. About a week or so later, I removed my polish and found that I had an green spot on my toenail. I went to the foot doctor and was told it was an infection. He also assured me that this nail tech was incorrect for telling me I had ingrown toenails, I did not have ingrown toe nails. I have been receiving pedicures since I was 16 and NEVER in my life have a received an infection. I reached out to her prior to going to the doctor and she brushed it off like it was no big deal and offered no apology. I sent her a picture and she responded by pointing out how gross it was and saying she's "never seen an infected toenail". I found her response to be extremely unprofessional. I tried to speak to Neal directly and stopped back in person to speak to him but he wasn't in. His receptionist refused to give me his contact information but assured me she'd give him mine so that he could reach out to me. I never ever heard from him or anyone at the salon again. Needless to say, I never went back to this salon. My stylist eventually left as well which assured me we both had the same impression of this place. Currently my toenail bed is healthy but I STILL haven't 100% outgrown the discoloration. Every time I look at my nail I'm reminded of how she ruined my once completely perfect nails. I continue to get manicures and pedicures and have not received any new infections from any other salons. Her digging and scrapping around on my toenails trying to fix a problem that didn't exist to begin with caused me an issue that's lasted too long. Also raises concerns on how clean her practice is. To say I was Disappointed in this salon is an understatement .. I continue to be appalled by this experience when I look back. I expected so much better from a salon that supposedly holds such weight in its name. I would hate to think Mr.Farinah only dedicates the majority of his time and effort into catering to high profile clientele and not giving that same care to up keeping things such as regulating cleanliness, making sure employees are knowledgeable and doing their jobs correctly, or addressing customer concerns for all the "little people" that support his Brooklyn establishment.. but after the experience, I can't say I'm convinced that's true. This salon is amazing. I was referred to a stylist named Camille by an acquaintance of mine and I had a great experience. Neal Farinah is actually a celebrity hairstylist who has clients including Beyonce so that's pretty cool. The salon is beautiful. There's great natural lighting, exposed brick, chandeliers and large mirrors with vanity lights at the hair-styling stations. So chic! It is located across the park in front of Brooklyn Academy of Music in case you are having trouble figuring out where it is located. Despite the red words in front it is easy to miss. I made an appointment with the receptionist the night before for 1 pm and she sent me an email confirmation. Pretty simple. The next day she greeted me at the door and checked me in with a smile, so sweet. My wait wasn't very long; after a few minutes Camille sent me to the back to get my hair washed and blow-dryed. I have naturally kinky-curly hair past shoulder length but it is pretty fine so it didn't take long to get that done. Camille's assistant did a great job and used aveda products that smelled so good. She also used a wide-tooth comb to detangle and, although I was paranoid, no hair came out. Phew! Afterward, I got my hair flat ironed and clipped in a little under an hour. Camille chatted me up and gave me tips on how to maintain super-fine natural hair. She used the comb-chase method with a fine-tooth comb and snipped only a little of my ends bc there wasn't much to. She did an amazing job! It was so shiny and full of bounce. I payed $75 for the wash and blow out + $50 for a treatment which is hella expensive but quality costs money. I haven't been to a salon since the cheap Dominican spots that literally rip your hair out so I was skeptical. However, I recommend this place to anyone who is looking for quality; esp those who have natural hair. read more

Every Summer I get a new hair cut for school (I am a college student) The last two salons I have been to in that area (Which shall remain nameless) failed to give me quality service and butchered my hair. On both occasions I met with Petal, who has years of experience and a great attitude towards her clients. She moved FAST. During my time there she talked me through everything she did with my hair, and why it was beneficial. Although I ended up being there for 3 hours or so, it went by super fast. I didn't feel like I been there forever. I truly enjoyed my experience with her. THE SALON: The salon itself seems well organized, and fashionable. They have a decent sized waiting area AWAY from the stylists area (which is good) They also had a nice manicure section. I am always satisfied with my experience. Janelle is GREAT! I have gone to her twice. She understands my hair- she takes her time which i value the most. I understand people hate that because they have to wait....but if you were in the chair you wouldnt want to be rushed, now would you? She makes sure every snip, swoop, swish, and bump is 100%! I came to her with long hair and was ready for a more fashionable look. I was scared to cut my hair but her gentle mannerism made me feel comfortable and trust her with my hair. I have a short hair cut and Neal does magic to my hair. I get my hair relaxed, conditioned, cut and styled and it always looks great. People always stop and ask me , "where do you get your hair done at?". Of course I tell them Neal Farinah Salon, the address and what the stylists can do there. Every time I go there I'm greeted with a smile and treated with professionalism. I love this salon and you should take a chance and do the same. I recently moved to the area and was excited to have a convenient hair salon. On my third visit, my stylist literally never showed up after almost an hour of waiting. They asked if someone else could do my hair - I didn't have much of a choice at that point. I was not pleased with the style and disappointedly went to the front desk to pay. At that point (the end of my service with a stylist I did not come for), I was told that I owed them money for canceling 2 prior appointments within a 48hr window of service. I have no problem abiding by salon rules, but (1) I was not aware of this rule as there wasn't any kind of notice at point of cancelation, (2) how could they tack on an additional fee after my service was SO botched and (3) I can't help but think my stylist ghosted me bc of these cancelations. I'm accustomed to a 24hr cancelation window but learned my lesson and will never return to this salon. read more

I go to Sheree and I'd recommend her. My hair is relaxed and she's grown it out a lot, so she definitely has growing hands, at least with my hair I can vouch. My hair is also thicker under her. She gives really intense scalp massages after washing, (intense in a good way)...so maybe that's part of it. She gets your hair bouncy and all that too, like I've gone on a date after my appointment without going home to restyle. She is also sweet and funny, and actually all the stylists in that place are cool and keep you laughing, so I have fun in there. I've also gone to Neal (the owner) who's amazing. read more

I've been to the big names, the small shops, and the schools and they were all TERRIBLE! I had a amazing experience here getting my hair done by Antonio. The staff was professional. I walked in and someone started washing my hair w/in 10 minutes. It was washed gently and combed properly from the ends to the roots...many salons I've been too still try to comb my hair from the roots to the ends...sigh. Anyway, the blow drying was also done thoroughly so I had confidence it would be straight when done. Antonio did a WONDERFUL job of pressing my hair and he actually just trimmed it!!! He's not scissor happy like some stylist. He just took off at most .25-.5 of an inch. It was SO refreshing to not have a trim turn into a cut! My hair had body and movement that lasted for a week despite rainy weather...yeah, he HOOKED IT UP. I'll note here that I have 4a-4c hair so it's pretty kinky. I also washed to today about a week later and I have NO HEAT DAMAGE. I waited to write my review so that I'd be able to see if my hair curl pattern was messed up.
